On Friday morning, the management of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum received an email claiming the presence of a bomb, after which the police were alerted.

“The email said bombs had been planted at more than eight locations in Mumbai, including the museum, the science centre, and the Byculla Zoo. Separate emails were also sent to these institutions,” PTI quoted a police official as saying.

Soon after, security was beefed up at vital installations in the city, while bomb detection and disposal squads and other police personnel, including those from anti-terror cells, started checking the museum. However, nothing suspicious was found during the investigation, officials said.

In this regard, a case has been registered against unidentified persons under Sections 505 (1) (b), 506 (2), 182 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Colaba Police Station, based on the complaint filed by the museum management.

Police are now investigating the matter and tracking the email address of the perpetrator.

During the investigation, nothing suspicious was found.

Arunachal Pradesh to show unique World War II remnants at The Hump WW2 Museum

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

‘The Hump WW2 Museum’ will serve as a tribute to the extraordinary operation during World War II, when the Allied Forces led by the US undertook a challenging task of transporting vital supplies over the treacherous Himalayan terrain

A museum dedicated to the remnants of aircraft from the Hump Operations during World War II will soon be inaugurated in Arunachal Pradesh, said chief minister Pema Khandu.

Named ‘The Hump WW2 Museum’, this institution will be located in Pasighat and will serve as a tribute to the extraordinary Hump Operation. During World War II, the Allied Forces, primarily led by the United States, undertook the challenging task of transporting vital supplies over the treacherous Himalayan terrain. This perilous route became known as ‘The Hump’ due to the extreme altitudes of the Eastern Himalayas.

A significant number of aircraft from these missions disappeared in the remote jungles and mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, never to be recovered. Chief Minister Khandu highlighted that the Hump route spanned across regions of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tibet, Yunnan (China), and Myanmar, with an estimated 650 aircraft having crashed in these areas due to the severe flying conditions.

‘The Hump WW2 Museum’ is now in the final stages of construction. It will house remnants of an American aircraft that crashed in the state during World War II, along with other important artifacts related to these historical events.

The museum is an initiative led by Chief Minister Khandu, who would invite the US ambassador to India for the inauguration. During the Hump Operations in 1942, when the Japanese Army blocked the vital Burma Road, the US-led Allied Forces executed one of the largest airlift operations in aviation history. Pilots navigating ‘The Hump’ had to traverse deep gorges and rapidly ascend over mountains exceeding 10,000 feet. Over the course of three years, these flights transported nearly 650,000 tonnes of critical supplies, including fuel, food, and ammunition, from Assam to Yunnan in China.

The rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh remains challenging for aviation experts even today, with unpredictable weather conditions and sudden heavy winds. Efforts to recover the remains of US personnel missing since World War II continue, with investigators from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) returning to India in recent years.

UK museum to sign pact for Shivaji’s ‘Tiger Claws’ journey to India

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The MoU, expected to be signed on Tuesday, coincides with Maharashtra’s 350th anniversary celebrations of the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is then expected to be dispatched to India later this year for an agreed period.

The Victoria and Albert (V and A) Museum is all set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government next week, which will see 17th century ‘Tiger Claws’ weapon believed to have belonged to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj make a journey back to India for an exhibition.

During a protracted military engagement in 1659, the legendary Maratha leader held metal claws, or wagh nakh, concealed in his hand and is said to have disembowelled his opponent Afzal Khan — the commander of the opposing Bijapur army.

It is believed, though unverified, that the set of claws then came into the possession of James Grant Duff, an officer of the East India Company who was appointed Resident or political agent of the Satara state in 1818 and gifted to the V and A by a descendant.

“The V and A looks forward to welcoming senior leadership from the Maharashtra government, to sign a memorandum of understanding,” a V and A spokesperson said.

“The story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s triumph over Afzal Khan is legendary, so we are delighted that the ‘Tiger Claws’ will return to India as part of the 350th anniversary events where they can be enjoyed as part of the celebrations. We hope that their display might also enable new research into their history and look forward to working in partnership with colleagues in the months ahead as we develop plans for their display,” the spokesperson said.

The MoU, expected to be signed on Tuesday, coincides with Maharashtra’s 350th anniversary celebrations of the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is then expected to be dispatched to India later this year for an agreed period.

According to the V and A, the weapon is accompanied by a fitted case made after Grant Duff returned to Scotland. The inscription on the case reads: “The ‘Wagnuck’ of Sivajee With Which He Killed the Moghul General. This Relic was given to Mr. James Grant-Duff of Eden When he was Resident at Satara Minister of the Peshwa of the Marathas”.

According to historical accounts, Shivaji and Afzal Khan had arranged a truce after political upheavals in order to meet in a tented enclosure, virtually alone.

The V and A description of the history of the ‘Tiger Claws’ explains: “Both came armed: Shivaji wore mail under his clothes and metal skull protection under his turban. He also held a metal ‘Tiger Claws’ weapon concealed in his hand. The two men fought, and Shivaji disembowelled his opponent.

“The last Peshwa (Prime Minister) of the Marathas, Baji Rao II, surrendered to the British in June 1818 after defeat in the Third Anglo-Maratha War and was banished to Bithoor near Kanpur. It is possible he also surrendered this weapon to Grant Duff. It has not been possible to verify whether these tiger claws are the ones used by Shivaji nearly 160 years earlier.”

Through his multi-disciplinary approach, he has crafted awe-inspiring site-specific installations that engage all the senses. Visitors can walk through mesmerising mixed media, watch captivating videos, immerse themselves in ambient sounds, and interact with thought-provoking structures.

Sri Prabha’s artistry goes beyond traditional boundaries as he ingeniously incorporates elements like traditional Indian sari fabrics, abstract paintings, digital print collages, and assemblages. His works have garnered significant attention and are proudly displayed in private collections across major cities like Chicago, Seattle, Miami, New York, Washington, DC, and even internationally in Copenhagen.

At the heart of his art lies a powerful message of interconnectedness, urging viewers to reevaluate their relationship with nature and each other. Through Resonator-Reanimator, Sri Prabha invites us to reflect on the shared origins of life and to embrace collaboration in safeguarding our planet for future generations.

“The idea is for people to go through a portal and realise we are more similar than different, that all of these elements floating around space came together and created us,” says Sri Prabha.

“We are all interconnected, and we can change our behavior to work together and collaborate. As civilizations, we like to think that we are different from each other, but we are really not. Our technology is changing rapidly, but our behavior has not kept up.”

Founded by artists in 1950, the Boca Raton Museum of Art has since flourished into a cultural landmark in South Florida. Alongside the Museum, it houses an Art School and Sculpture Garden, offering an enriching experience for art enthusiasts and visitors from all walks of life.

Sri Prabha’s exhibition is a great opportunity to witness the brilliance of an Indian-born artist who has made his mark in the United States. With a powerful vision and a deep connection to nature, his art has the potential to inspire change and ignite a passion for environmental preservation.

Histories from the Kitchen — Antique collector turns his house into vintage vessels museum

While the advent of modern technology and materials might have transformed the kitchen, there are certain utensils that retain their relevance not only due to their efficiency but also because of the health benefits they offer. Ayyanar, an antique collector based in Pondicherry, has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the glory of the past with future generations.
Ayyanar works in Pondicherry health department for his living, but due to his passion, for over 30 years, he has been collecting utensils made of food-grade bronze, soapstone, iron, and clay—metals that were commonly used by our ancestors for cooking. Even though these vessels have been replaced in our daily lives, Ayyanar treasures them as a vital part of Sri Shasta Palace, his abode of antiques.
Upon entering Ayyanar’s home, visitors are greeted by a staircase adorned with a fascinating array of antique tiffin boxes, creating an ambiance reminiscent of an antique museum.
The living room is filled with the delightful sound of bells, while Ayyanar engages children in captivating conversations about his collection. From wooden slippers and measuring vessels to unique flask-like Koojas, his extensive collection showcases a variety of items, including perfectly arranged tiffin boxes of different shapes and sizes, oversized keys, rattles, lamps, Paaladai Sangu (a small vessel for infant medicines), betel boxes shaped like cars, tea pots, casks, bowls, and more.
“I collect the antique vessels, preserve them and showcase the same to the public in order to create awareness on these vessels that were used in olden days as they may fade out in less time,” Ayyanar said. He believes that understanding why our ancestors exclusively used certain types of metals for cooking is crucial. “By cooking food in specific metals, they achieved enhanced taste and derived nutritional benefits from those metals. Unlike the prevalence of cancer and various health issues in modern times, our ancestors enjoyed better health,” he said.
Ayyanar said that he wants to revive those traditional vessels for cooking and share the glory of the past with future generations. “As food is the vital part in one’s life. I need to build a museum with these vessels and if I do so I think I can create more awareness with the younger generation,” he said.
Among Ayyanar’s captivating collection, the Rail Aduki stands out as a remarkable set of 14-18 vessels used for cooking while traveling. This set includes pans, spoons, vessels, and plates, enabling the preparation and serving of meals for an entire family while maintaining compactness. The Rail Aduki reflects the resourcefulness and practicality of our ancestors, ensuring they could enjoy home-cooked meals even when away from home.
Over the centuries, Indians have traditionally cooked in clay pots, imparting a distinct earthy flavor to their dishes. Cast iron and copper pots and pans were also popular in ancestral kitchens. Despite the current craze for non-stick utensils, Ayyanar’s collection reveals the beauty of enamel-coated cast iron cooking utensils and serving dishes that have been carefully preserved. Clay jars, ideal for storing food items, are also featured in his collection. Ayyanar emphasises that embracing these traditional cooking vessels is crucial for prioritising the health of our families.
Ayyanar’s ultimate vision is to establish a museum dedicated to these traditional vessels. He believes that by doing so, he can further raise awareness among the younger generation about the significance of these artifacts. A visit to his museum would serve as an educational journey, connecting people to their culinary heritage and inspiring them to reconsider the materials used in modern-day cooking.

PM Modi inaugurates International Museum Expo

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government has prioritised preserving the country’s heritage, even as he lamented that enough efforts were not made in this direction post Independence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government has prioritised preserving the country’s heritage, even as he lamented that enough efforts were not made in this direction post Independence.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the International Museum Expo 2023 in  Pragati Maidan  at New Delhi, Modi also flagged the issue of trafficking of ancient Indian art and antiques, and said that with India’s increasing prestige in the world, various countries have now started returning things belonging to Indian heritage.

Modi said 10 special museums are being built to immortalise the contribution of the tribal community in the country’s freedom struggle.

The long period of slavery also resulted in the destruction of the country’s written and unwritten heritage, Modi noted.

This is not only India’s loss, it is the loss of the whole world, he asserted.

“Unfortunately, the efforts that should have been made post Independence to preserve our heritage, were not made,” he said.

He also urged people to make preserving historical artifacts their nature.

“For example every household must make a family museum in which they preserve things of their ancestors and elders. Schools and institutions should also make their own museums,” he said.

During the event, Modi also unveiled the mascot of the International Museum Expo, a graphic novel titled “A day at the Museum”, a directory of Indian museums, a pocket map of Kartavya Path, and museum cards.

The mascot of the International Museum Expo is a contemporised version of the dancing girl made of wood in the Chennapatnam art style.

The graphic novel portrays a group of children visiting the National Museum where they learn about different career opportunities that are available at a museum.

The pocket map of the Kartavya Path highlights various cultural spaces and institutions and also traces the history of the iconic pathway.

The Museums cards are a set of 75 cards with illustrated facades of iconic museums across the country, and is an innovative way to introduce museums to people of all ages and each card holds brief information of museums.

The expo is being organised as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to celebrate the 47th International Museum Day (IMD), according to an official statement.

The IMD theme for this year is “museums, sustainability and well-being”.

The expo is designed to initiate a holistic conversation on museums with professionals to enable these to evolve as cultural centres that play a pivotal role in India’s cultural diplomacy, it said.

During the programme, Modi also inaugurated a virtual walkthrough of the upcoming national museum at North Block and South Block.
