Maruti Suzuki rolls out all-new Ertiga at Rs 8.35 lakh

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Maruti Suzuki’s all-new Ertiga comes with hybrid technology and driven by an all-new advanced six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country’s largest carmaker, on Friday said it has launched a new version of its multi-purpose vehicle Ertiga, priced between Rs 8.35 lakh and Rs 12.79 lakh (ex-showroom). The model comes with a 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with both manual and automatic transmissions.

The auto major has also launched CNG trims of the vehicle. The model comes with hybrid technology and driven by an all-new advanced six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Ertiga’s launch ten years ago was a significant moment in the Indian automobile industry, as it created a new segment that has been growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 4.7 percent,” MSI Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said. The next-gen Ertiga with advanced technology features comes with a new engine and an all-new transmission, he added.

“As it stays true to its brand vision of providing comfort, technology, and safety features, while being fuel-efficient for customers, the next-gen Ertiga will surely continue to be India’s go-to MPV. We are confident that the next-gen Ertiga will be widely embraced by our customers,” Takeuchi stated.

Available both in petrol and CNG options, Ertiga offers a mileage of 20.51 km/l (petrol) and 26.11km/kg (CNG).

In an interaction with PTI, MSI Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) Shashank Srivastava said the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment has been witnessing growth over the last few years.

“In 2014-15, it used to be only around 4-5 percent of the industry but now it has grown to around 8-9 percent of the industry and the overall volumes have also grown from 1.6-2 lakh units in 2014-15 to almost 2.6 lakh units last fiscal year,” he said.

With the growth in the segment, MSI has also been able to increase it market share from 33-34 percent to around 61 percent, Srivastava noted. “We used to do 5,000 units a month earlier till 2019 but after we introduced Ertiga and XL6, it has grown to 13,500 units a month. The total MPV market roughly per month is around 22,000,” he stated.

Srivastava noted that with the segment growing, the company is updating Ertiga and also bringing in a new version of XL6 later this month. “We would like to increase the market share further provided we have availability of the parts. The pending bookings for the company has already risen to 3 lakh units. We are hoping to increase production to reduce waiting periods,” he stated.

Srivastava noted sales of Ertiga has increased despite the lack of a diesel powertrain, which used to be there when the model was launched initially. The updated Ertiga now comes with cruise control, auto headlamps with ‘follow me home’ functionality, and CNG specific speedometer in S-CNG variants.

The new Ertiga can also be owned through Maruti Suzuki Subscribe at an all-inclusive monthly subscription fee starting from Rs 18,600 (petrol) and Rs 22,400 (CNG), the company said.

As demand for SUVs rises, so does waiting period: Find out how long you have to wait for these top vehicles

As demand for SUVs rises in India, the waiting period for multipurpose vehicles is also extending. Although the supply-demand correlation seems to be the problem, it is only exasperated by the shortage of microchips. The supply shortage would continue to impact at least 169 industries and may last until 2023. The reason behind the shortage is primarily that these microchips are produced by very few manufacturers in the US, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and China. (Image: Shutterstock)

Hyundai Motor India’s recently launched new version of Creta has become the number one selling model among passenger vehicles in May, a month that saw curtailed sales due to coronavirus-led lockdown.

Hyundai Motor India’s recently launched new version of Creta has become the number one selling model among passenger vehicles in May, a month that saw curtailed sales due to coronavirus-led lockdown.

As per industry sources, it is the first time the popular SUV has taken the top slot in the monthly sales numbers, beating Maruti Suzuki’s best sellers like Alto and Dzire.

Creta secured pole position last month with a sale of 3,212 units. It was followed by Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, which took the second spot with a sale of 2,353 units.

The auto major secured third position as well with its compact sedan Dzire selling 2,215 units. It was followed by Mahindra & Mahindra’s popular model Bolero on fourth spot with a sale of 1,715 units.

The fifth position went to Maruti Suzuki’s multi purpose vehicle Eeco with 1,617 units.

Industry sources confirmed the sales data even as industry body SIAM is yet to come out with the official figures for May.

When contacted, Hyundai Motor India Director (Sales, Marketing and Service) Tarun Garg told PTI that the ongoing pandemic has set a new normal and the company as a quick adapter has made a humble beginning with a reasonable performance in May.

Launched on March 16 this year, the all new Creta has already received over 26,000 bookings, he added.

“We are glad that the legacy of Creta as an aspirational brand is shining and we are now committed towards faster deliveries of the model to customers who have been waiting patiently after booking their favourite SUV,” Garg said.

According to the latest sales data, Maruti Suzuki sold 139,121 units across all models last month, up from 135,948 units in October 2018.

As auto sector in the country struggles owing to the ongoing economic slowdown, the festive season brought only a slight reprieve. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has been one of the worst-affected manufacturers, consistently reporting declining sales over the course of the year. It reduced  production by 20.7 percent in October, making it the ninth straight month when the country’s largest carmaker lowered its output.

The company produced a total of 119,337 units in October as against 150,497 units in the year-ago month, MSI said in a regulatory filing.

According to the latest sales data, Maruti Suzuki sold 139,121 units across all models last month, up from 135,948 units in October 2018. The company registered a 2 percent sales growth in October year-on-year.

These two Maruti Suzuki models defied auto slowdown to register record sales

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

While Maruti Suzuki reported a 27 percent decline in September sales year-on-year, two of its models defied the downturn to record over 35 percent increase in units sold.

While Maruti Suzuki reported a 27 percent decline in September sales year-on-year, two of its models defied the downturn to record over 35 percent increase in units sold.

India’s largest carmaker sold a mere 110,454 vehicles in September, a steep 27 percent slide from the 151,512 units it sold in the same month last year. Most of the company’s models saw a huge decline in sales, Ciaz leading the unwanted pack with a 73 percent downswing followed by S-Cross (65 percent), and Celerio (55 percent).

The smallest decline was recorded by WagonR at 11 percent. Maruti Suzuki sold 11,757 units of the hatchback in September down from 13,252 that it sold in the corresponding month last year.

However, Ertiga and Eeco defied the downward trend to record positive sales growth. Ertiga sold 6,284 units against 3,926 in the year ago period for a 60 percent year-on-year upswing.

Eeco, Maruti Suzuki’s microvan, sold 9,949 units last month against 7,354 from a year ago to register a 35 percent sales growth.

Maruti Suzuki discontinued its Omni range of vans owing to the cost increases from the AIS 146 safety upgrades, which has led to the spike in sales for the Eeco. In effect, combined van sales for Maruti Suzuki remain lower than they were when the Omni was still in the market.

However, overall September failed to bring relief to automakers with all major manufacturers recording a sales downturn. The corporate tax rate cuts announced by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman towards the end of last month failed to provide a fillip.

The carmakers will hope that the ongoing festive season and discounts offered by them will change their fortunes in the coming months.
