Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Ranveer Singh and Kriti Sanon turn showstoppers for Manish Malhotra for a traditional fashion show in Varanasi.

Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and Kriti Sanon walked the ramp on the banks of the river Ganga on Sunday. Ditching the usual five-star banquets, the fashion show was organised by celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra at Varanasi’s Namo Ghat. Aligning with the theme of the day, ‘Banarasi Saree- A tapestry of Indian culture & Craftsmen’, the event was aimed to promote handlooms and handicrafts of Varanasi.

Several pictures and videos from the event show the actors in traditional attires, walking as showstoppers. As rich silhouettes took centre stage at the gala affair, Ranveer Singh was dressed in a kurta and dhoti in a beautiful golden and plum colour, while Kriti Sanon looked beautiful in a stunning red and golden Banarasi silk lehenga with a matching blouse and dupatta. She completed her look with a statement maang tika and ethnic makeup, matching the aesthetics of the show.

As they confidently walked the ramp against the backdrop of fireworks and the astounding music of drums and temple bells, the actors also waved towards the audience amid loud cheers and applause. Manish Malhotra also shared pictures with the actors on his Instagram handle.

The fashion show was organised by the Indian Minorities Foundation as a part of the two-day event on Sunday evening.

Ranveer Singh, Kriti Sanon visit Kashi Viswanath

Before the fashion show, Ranveer Singh, Kriti Sanon, and Manish Malhotra arrived in Varanasi and paid a visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. After offering their prayers, they were also spotted at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, where they waved at fans and interacted with many.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Ranveer Singh shared his experience and called it ‘amazing’ and a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.’

“I was speaking with some other models backstage that we have worked in many fashion shows but this is once in a lifetime opportunity. Walking on the banks of river Ganga felt a million times better than walking at Mumbai’s five-star banquet,” he said.

On the work front, Ranveer Singh is all set to reprise his role as Simmba in Rohit Shetty’s upcoming film Singham Again. Kriti Sanon delivered two back-to-back films with Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Crew. She will be next seen in Do Patti.

Air India’s makeover begins — what is new?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The rebranding process has started at Delhi and Mumbai airports and will gradually extend to other airports across Air India’s global network. The new branding will be visible at various touch points, including check-in counters, boarding gates, lounges, and boarding cards.

Homegrown airline Air India, on Tuesday, started rolling out its new global brand identity which it unveiled in August. The new look, centred around the ‘Vista’ logo, features new brand colours and a bespoke font, Air India Sans.

The airline, which was founded by JRD Tata in 1932, returned to the Tata group in 2022 after 69 years as a government enterprise. Air India’s new identity is now visible on the redesigned website and mobile app. Air India’s social media platforms have also been revamped to reflect the new brand identity.

Campbell Wilson, CEO & Managing Director of Air India, in a company statement, said, “The network-wide switch to our new global brand identity is a landmark moment for Air India. It’s a promise to our guests of a transforming travel experience that is modern, seamless and infused with the warmth and hospitality that defines a new India and a new Air India.”

The new Air India livery will feature on the A350 fleet and other incoming brand-new aircraft. The in-flight rollout of the new global brand identity is linked to the airline’s soon-to-be-inducted Airbus A350 fleet and subsequent refurbishment of cabin products over the next few months.

Earlier this year, Air India placed record-setting orders for 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing for $70 billion. The much-anticipated Airbus A350 aircraft will start arriving this month. A $400 million project for the refurbishment of 43 of Air India’s legacy widebody aircraft begins mid-2024, leading to the installation of new seats in every cabin, new inflight entertainment systems and inflight Wi-Fi internet connectivity.

Wilson added, “This is a transformation of great scale and therefore, it may take us a while to achieve consistency in our product, service and the overall ‘new Air India experience’. We will continue to seek the support of our guests as we modernise Air India and make it a world-class airline that India deserves.”

In addition to these changes, Air India revealed new uniforms for its cabin and cockpit crews last week, designed by famed Indian couturier, Manish Malhotra. The new uniforms will be introduced in a phased manner over the next few months, starting with the entry of service of Air India’s first Airbus A350. The airline will soon be revealing new uniforms for ground staff, engineers and security personnel, also designed by Manish Malhotra.

Air India unveils new uniforms for its cockpit & cabin crew, designed by Manish Malhotra

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The attire for the female cabin crew features ombré sarees with patterns representing Indian heritage architecture (jharokha) and the Vista (new Air India logo icon), paired with a comfortable blouse and blazer. The ready-to-wear sarees can optionally be worn with comfortable pants to provide an ‘East-meets-West’ look.

Tata Sons-owned Air India unveiled the new uniforms for its cockpit and cabin crew on Tuesday, December 12, months after the airline revealed a new logo and livery for its fleet. Earlier this year in September, the airline announced its collaboration with Indian designer Manish Malhotra for the creation of the new uniforms. The introduction of the uniforms will be phased in over the coming months, starting with the entry into service of Air India’s first Airbus A350.

In a statement, the airline said, “Crafted by Indian celebrity couturier Manish Malhotra, the new uniforms feature an array of colors and timeless designs. The collection mirrors a rare, harmonious blend of rich Indian heritage and aesthetics with 21st-century style, elegance, and comfort.”

Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, said, “Air India’s crew uniforms are amongst the world’s most storied in aviation history, and we firmly believe that Manish Malhotra’s innovative ensemble will script an exciting new chapter for Air India’s future narrative. It perfectly captures the essence of our new identity, service principles, and our pursuit of setting new benchmarks in global aviation. We are confident that our new crew uniforms will rise to the heightened expectations, distinctly making a statement that defines the very best of Indian heritage and hospitality. Travelers across continents will be able to instantly recognize these uniforms as the new Air India.”

The ombré sarees for the senior female cabin crew will be aubergine-to-burgundy, combined with aubergine blazers, exuding a balance of authority and sophistication. Junior female cabin crew will wear vibrant red-to-purple ombré sarees combined with red blazers, embodying youthfulness and energy.

Manish Malhotra said, “My aim was to create uniforms that capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while also embodying a modern and sophisticated look. By incorporating quintessential hues that are symbolic to India, I hope that these uniforms not only make the crew feel proud but also leave a lasting impression on the guests, representing the warmth and hospitality that India is known for.”

The airline feels that the new uniforms for both male and female cabin crew are practical and suited for them to perform in-flight duties, allowing ease of movement. The new uniform designs were developed in close consultation with Air India’s cabin crew representatives and the airline’s In-flight Services team.

The cockpit crew’s uniform features a black double-breasted suit with a print inspired by the Vista. The female cabin crew will wear dual-tone (black and burgundy) block heels, and the male cabin crew will wear comfortable black Brogues. The uniforms include pearl earrings and sling bags for female cabin crew. Manish Malhotra has also designed uniforms for ground staff, engineers, and security personnel, which will be revealed in due course.

Reliance Industries agrees to buy 40% stake in Manish Malhotra designer label

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Reliance Brands said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 40 percent minority stake in MM Styles Private Ltd owned by Manish Malhotra.

Reliance Brands Ltd (RBL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Retail, on Friday said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 40 percent minority stake in MM Styles Private Ltd owned by Manish Malhotra. This is the first external investment for the brand, which had so far been privately held by the designer.

Launched in 2005, the Manish Malhotra luxury-retail footprint extends across 4 flagship stores in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad, 2 SIS, besides an elaborate virtual store and over 12 million social followers across various channels.

While Manish Malhotra’s signature glamour has its genesis in the founder’s career as a costume stylist for 31 years, the brand’s design language is brought to life by a team of 700 artisans and professionals, led by Malhotra himself.

As India’s largest luxury retailer, RBL has for over 14 years nurtured and grown global luxury to premium brands in the country. However, as upcoming consumption power steadily moves from west to east, the fashion and design sensibilities are not far behind. Recognising these winds of change, RBL in its next wave of value creation is setting sight towards home-grown talent rooted in Indian design sensibilities.

“Our strategic partnership with Manish Malhotra is anchored on our immense respect for his craft and our deep commitment to Indian art and culture. Being an entrepreneur, Manish the man behind the brand, has always been nimble and ahead of his times.

Recognition and appreciation for Indian couture is at an inflexion point globally and we are excited to partner in this journey with Manish.” said Isha Ambani, Director, Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd. (holding company of all retail companies in Reliance Industries Ltd Group).

The coming together of the country’s leading couture house and foremost luxury conglomerate aims to develop a corporate framework that sustains Manish Malhotra’s legacy for generations to come.

The brand Manish Malhotra stands unique at the intersection of fashion and movie entertainment. Thus, expanding the brand into a larger lifestyle consumption portfolio would be a natural next step. The brand also has a significant cache of current and potential consumers across global fashion capitals and onward plans include expansion both in India and international markets.

Besides physical retail expansion, the partnership will work on creating a strong technology backbone for the business, developing phygital and experiential e-commerce opportunities.

Speaking about the development, Manish Malhotra said, “From the largest luxury couture stores in Delhi and Hyderabad; the launch of India’s first couture virtual store; and redefining glamour at Indian weddings, I have always aimed to set benchmarks across the life of the brand.

The collaboration with Reliance Brands Ltd was a natural decision for me, as it represents both Reliance’s astute vision and the family’s deep affinity for crafts and culture. As the brand aims for international expansion, business diversification, and renewed creative growth, there could have been no better strategic partner to accompany us on this journey.”

Completing the costume to couture to institution evolution cycle, the brand will continue to be led by Manish Malhotra, Managing and Creative Director of the brand.

Pierre Cardin’s influence was deep on Indian fashion icons too, from Simi Garewal to Tahiliani

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

”I was dressed in a sari. In French, he (Cardin) kept saying I looked beautiful,” Simi Garewal said, recalling the incident at the Venice Film Festival.

At the premiere of the 1972 film ”Siddhartha” in Venice, a leading French magazine wanted to click Simi Garewal and Pierre Cardin together for an ”East meets West” photo op. ”I was dressed in a sari. In French, he (Cardin) kept saying I looked beautiful,” Garewal said, recalling the incident at the Venice Film Festival.

Years later Cardin came to India and when they met she was in a western dress. ”He asked me, ’Where is that sari?’ He loved sari so much”, she told PTI.

The legendary French designer who died Tuesday at age 98 left an indelible impression on generations of Indian fashion icons, from Garewal in the 70s to contemporary designers such as Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Malhotra. Many remember him as one of the first few international designers who brought their clothing lines to India in the 1980s when foreign brands were still a rarity and accessible only the well-traveled.

The first-ever fashion show Tahiliani watched as a young man living in Mumbai was Cardin’s because his wife Sailaja was one of the models at the show. That’s how I ended up seeing my first ever fashion show of any consequence. And I sketched for a day and night. I then knew this is what I wanted to do,” he told PTI. Tahiliani said he met Cardin around two decades ago and told the designer about how he inspired him.

”I said ’It’s all because of you’. Had I not seen the show, who knows what my path would have been because at that time there was no real fashion in India, it was a textile industry.” Cardin’s ability to draw inspiration from eclectic themes, motifs, and cultures is best illustrated by Garewal’s encounter that continued after his sari compliment when the two went into a coffee room.

”Shashi Kapoor (her co-star in the film) joined us and suggested him to watch Siddhartha’. He asked what does he wear in the film. Shashi Kapoor told him that he wears a dhoti and they started talking a little bit about that,” she said. Celebrated designer Rina Dhaka said when she started reading fashion magazines as a girl in the 1980-90s, if there was one global name she knew it was Cardin’s, a thought also echoed by FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi who has fond memories of attending his show in Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village in 1994.

Dhaka said post-1990s, one saw Cardin not so much on catwalks for women or men but more in accessories after he started licensing products such as pens, wallets and furniture using his brand name. ”He became renowned down to the fact that ’I own a Pierre Cardin pen in India or wherever I could be’. He was in many ways a great example of how we as designers can adapt to changing times and still be able to continue a brand over so many decades,” Dhaka told PTI.

Sethi recalled the 1994 Cardin show in Hauz Khas Village. ”For us it was the event to go to. I remember the excitement of attending the show. Even today, how many international brands have had the courage to come here with their full collection and launch it while they launch their international collections?” Sethi told PTI.

Cardin defined ”aspiration” for his generation, he said, adding that French fashion always held fascination for Indians and Cardin was the one who brought it to the country. ”There can be a debate on whether he should have diluted the brand or not, but the credit of showing other designers how a fashion designer’s brand equity can be leveraged, goes to him,” Sethi added.

Cardin was an inspiration too for couturier Rahul Mishra, who described the French icon as a ”complete designer” whose work transcends eras. ”He was one of the most renowned designers in both luxury and life. From pens to caps, he was the one who started licensing products using the brand name. ”He was the first modernist designer the world has seen. The designs he created in the 1950s look as if they are from the year 2050,” Mishra told PTI.

When Mishra was studying at the Milan-based Istituto Marangoni, the private Italian school of fashion and design, one of his faculty members used to address Cardin as ”Pierre Cardini, because he was originally an Italian”. ”It was his father who removed the ’i’ in Cardini when they went to Paris in his early days. He was a haute couturier in the 1950s. An undisputed thought leader and disrupter who changed fashion. He was a complete designer – be it clothes, pens, furniture, etc,” he added.

Fashion designer Samant Chauhan said one of Cardin’s most important contributions was combining the ’mini’ and the ’maxi’ skirts of the 1970s. ”In the 1970s, fashion was more exclusive, and couturiers in Paris had a very limited clientele. The whole market is still very secretive. At that time, it was brave of him to move from haute couture to ready-to-wear,” said Chauhan..
