People are increasingly choosing to travel to metropolitan areas, including New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and hill stations like Manali and Rishikesh, and places with a strong cultural heritage like Jaipur, according to data collated by travel aggregator Booking.com.

Most-booked international destinations by Indian travellers in the first half of 2023 include Dubai, Bangkok, London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Paris, and Hanoi.

Along with hotels, alternative accommodations such as resorts, guest houses, and homestays were the most popular choices for stays in H1, it said.

Top countries from where travellers visited India in H1 of 2023 were the UK, the US, Bangladesh, Russia, and the UAE. Most of these visitors travelled to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, the report said.

This report is based on booking data of all travellers visiting India (Indian travellers and international travellers) with check-in dates of January 1 to June 27, 2023.

“Travel has undeniably become increasingly popular in recent years despite macroeconomic headwinds faced by the industry. It’s been heartwarming to see a significantly higher level of optimism for travel in 2023, compared to last year.

This growing enthusiasm to travel is further reflected in the choices made by explorers who are increasingly opting for alternative stays besides hotels,” Booking.com Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia, Santosh Kumar, said.

The year, 86 percent of Indian travellers are optimistic about their travel plans in the next 12 months, he added.

Summary

As more people are inclined to explore places at their own pace and preference, a recent travel trend report suggests that Jammu and Kashmir, Manali and Shimla are the most preferred destinations for solo Indian travellers.

A research conducted by travel fintech SanKash, found that almost 35 percent of solo travellers preferred Jammu and Kashmir to go on a vacation, followed by Manali (25 percent) and Shimla (14 percent). Jammu and Kashmir, Manali and Shimla are the most preferred destinations for solo travellers as more people are inclined to explore these places at their own pace and preference, according to travel trends.

Mussoorie, Sikkim, and Goa are among other top preferred destinations, with bookings clocking in at nine percent, seven percent and five percent, respectively.

“Destinations renowned for their natural beauty, cultural richness have witnessed a surge in popularity, captivating the hearts of travellers. As of March 2023, domestic travel is becoming more popular, and domestic capacity has already surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Bookings are back to 100 per cent of pre-pandemic levels for domestic travel,” said Akash Dahiya, co-founder and CEO of SanKash.

According to PTI, the most interesting trend in the report was the shift towards solo travel, as there has been a whopping 250 percent surge in Q1-FY23.

The insights indicate a notable shift in travel patterns, with travellers displaying a strong inclination towards “self-exploration, adventure, and reconnecting with nature”.

“Solo travel has topped the chart as the most preferred trend, as travellers are inclined to explore not only themselves but the world at their own pace and preference. The feeling of freedom and independence are the key factors fuelling the trend since people want to break free from their comfort zone and not feel swayed by the whims of fellow travellers,” it added.

As the summer sizzles, Indians are preparing for holidays with 82 per cent of them intending to travel during this season making Manali and Goa as their favourite hill and beach destinations respectively, according to a survey by Hospitality technology firm, OYO.

As per OYO’s Summer Vacation Index 2023, the surge in domestic travels that was induced by Covid restrictions continues with a staggering 92 per cent of respondents planning to explore domestic destinations.

The survey, which took responses of over 15,000 people across India via OYO app, also found that shorter trips and ‘staycations’ of 1-3 days continue to be the top preference.

“The travel resurgence continues strong with 82 per cent Indians intending to travel during this summer season. The Covid travel restriction induced trend of rediscovery of our own country’s beauty also continues strong with a staggering 92 per cent planning to explore domestic destinations,” OYO said in a statement.

As far as destinations are concerned, mountains are the clear choice this summer with 30 per cent upvotes, followed closely by beaches at 26 per cent, it added.

“India’s favourite mountain destination is Manali, followed by Kashmir, Mcleod Ganj, Ooty and Coorg. OYO hotels in Manali continue to see an uptick in demand as summer travel gains pace,” the company said.

On the other hand, Goa continues to be India’s preferred choice for beaches, with 50 per cent people wanting to travel there.

“Demand for hotels in Goa has surged by more than 20 per cent compared to the same period last year. This was followed by Andaman Nicobar, Kerala, Pondicherry, and Gokarna,” as per the survey conducted between May 7 and May 14, 2023.

OYO said its survey also found that respondents showed a strong inclination towards exploring offbeat and lesser-known destinations.

“Mawlynnong in Meghalaya and Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh stood out as the top offbeat choices with 27 per cent and 23 per cent of the votes, respectively. Following closely behind was Valiyaparamba in Kerala, garnering 16 per cent of the votes,” it added.

The survey also found that 13 per cent respondents wished to travel to pilgrimage destinations for spiritual enrichment. With the beginning of Char Dham Yatra in late April, Kedarnath emerged as the top pilgrimage destination followed by Vaishno Devi and Varanasi.

As far as international vacation is concerned, Maldives continues to be the preferred choice. Additionally, Switzerland, Dubai, Thailand, and Indonesia have also made it to the list of dream vacation spots for Indians this summer, OYO said.

When it comes to budget, 34 per cent of respondents were looking for trips under Rs 10,000.

OYO Chief Service Officer Shreerang Godbole said there is a surge in travel demand and a strong desire among travellers to explore the beauty and diversity of India.

“This surge in travel demand is a promising sign for the growth and development of the Indian travel and hospitality industry,” he said.

A noticeable trend that emerged in the aftermath of Covid is the preference for shorter trips and rejuvenating staycations of 1-3 days, he added.

Godbole further said, “The trend continues this summer as well, signifying a desire among Indian travellers for quick escapes, a chance to unwind, and a shift towards valuing quality experiences over extended durations.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

From Hidimba Devi Temple to Mall Road and Old Manali, check out these amazing seasonal attractions in Manali that will mesmerise you.

Has going on vacation to Manali in the dead of winter been on your mind? In the summer, when the weather is warm and clear, many people like visiting the hills. But it is the winters when there’s a mystical air in the region, of which snow makes the secret ingredient.

In other words, if you’re in Manali during the winters, you very well know what to expect. The environment is simply beautiful and nature seems to be in all its glory. Read on for a rundown of some of Manali’s best seasonal attractions.

Stop by the Hidimba Devi Temple

Unlike other Indian temples, this one honors Hidimba (sometimes spelled Hidimbi), Bhima’s wife and Ghatotkach’s mother. Although she was related to the mighty demon king Hidimb, the latter’s sister Hidimbi has been elevated to the status of a goddess, an embodiment of Goddess Durga, for her many acts of kindness. The Dungri Temple is in the middle of a grove of cedar trees. A really stunning and tranquil temple complex.

Take a trip along Mall Road

Manali’s Mall Road is among the best known in all of India. Here you may discover cute cafés and businesses offering all sorts of wintery goods. Shop for authentic Himachali shawls and coats here. Similarly popular with visitors are Tibetan handicrafts.

Travel to ancient Manali

The atmosphere in Old Manali is simply amazing yet, will make you feel nostalgic. Old Manali is just where you go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city center and the more recently developed New Manali neighborhood. Some of the greatest cafés in town may be found in this area along the river. Warm yourself at one of the local eateries on a snowy winter day.

Temples and thermal springs

Try the villages of Vashisht, located about 3 km from Manali. Walking here instead of taking a cab is an option for the more daring traveler. The main attractions are the hot springs and the nearby Vashisht Temple. The water was said to have healing effects.

Flying in the sky on a paraglider above Solang Valley

Only 13 kilometers separate Solang Valley from Manali proper. Paragliding in Solang Valley is a must if you’re on vacation in Manali and you happen to locate a sunny day. The breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains is hard to forget. Make sure to ride the cable car while you’re in the valley.
