Vistara has appointed Vinod Kannan as the Chief Executive Officer with effect from January 1, 2022. The current CEO Leslie Thng will move to a senior position at Singapore Airlines in January.

Kannan, the current Chief Commercial Officer at Vistara, joined the full-service carrier in June 2019 as Chief Strategy Officer. He also performs Network Planning, Revenue Management, Marketing, Customer Experience and Cabin Service functions at the airline.

Kannan holds a master’s degree in business administration from the National University of Singapore and the University of California, Los Angeles. He started his career with Singapore Airlines in 2001 and held various senior positions in the airline. Prior to joining Vistara, he served as Chief Commercial Officer for Scoot, the budget airline subsidiary of the Singapore Airlines Grou.

“Leslie has led the airline through a significant phase, with the start of international operations and the entry into service of various aircraft including the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Vinod will lead Vistara in its next phase of growth, building on the strong foundation laid by Leslie,” Vistara’s Chairman Bhaskar Bhat said.

Vistara is a 51:49 joint venture between Tata Sons Limited and Singapore Airlines Limited. The airline, which commenced operations in 2015, now has a fleet of 48 aircraft, including 37 Airbus A320, three Airbus A321neo, six Boeing 737-800NG, and two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Coronavirus impact: Vistara to adjust capacity, ‘reduce cost and conserve cash’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Vistara chief executive officer Leslie Thng has written to the company’s employees apprising them of the coronavirus situation and how the airline plans to deal with the latest developments.

The world is witnessing an unprecedented crisis over the last two weeks due to the spread of deadly coronavirus and airlines across the world are among the worst hit.

In India, airlines have also started what their global peers are doing at a much larger scale — grounding fleet and cutting capacity.

Vistara, the joint venture of Tata sons and Singapore Airlines, is the youngest airline of India. It started operations in 2015 and recently inducted its first wide-body aircraft. The airline, which had plans to commence medium and long-haul operations to cities like London, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow among others, now looks at a difficult future amid uncertain times.

In the light of these developments, Vistara chief executive officer Leslie Thng has written to the company’s employees apprising them of the situation that the airline finds itself in owing to the travel restrictions imposed by governments across the globe.

“I would like to update on the growing scale and impact of COVID-19 has on our business. Our immediate priority has been to ensure the safety and well-being of our passengers as well as our staff, especially our frontline staff and operating crew,” he wrote. “A cross functional task force (chaired by Captain Basil) has been set up in January 2020 to review SOPs and to implement the necessary measures required to protect everyone. All operational divisions and departments will be informed on the decisions taken accordingly. HR will also continue to provide regular updates on the measures we are taking in our office premises.”

Thng added that the Vistara’s operations have been adjusted for March and April 2020, and that the airline is taking steps to “reduce cost and conserve cash”.

The travel advisories and visa restrictions announced by the government of India and other countries, as well as the restriction on air travel by corporates, have adversely impacted air travel demand globally and locally. We are not immune to this and therefore have adjusted our international and domestic capacity for March 2020 and April 2020. As the situation is still evolving, we are closely monitoring and will make further capacity adjustments as and when required.

“In addition, we are taking preventive measures to reduce cost and conserve cash, including engaging our partners and suppliers to work together. Discretionary operating expenditures will also be tightened.”

In another development, the Union government on Monday imposed a blanket ban on passengers visiting India from European Union, the European Free Trade Association, Turkey and the United Kingdom, with effect from March 18.

In light of the havoc caused by coronavirus on airline operations across the globe, aviation consultancy CAPA has issued a grave warning. “By the end of May-2020, most airlines in the world will be bankrupt. Coordinated government and industry action is needed – now – if catastrophe is to be avoided,” CAPA – Centre for Aviation, said in its latest note on the global situation.

Premium traffic on the rise, says Leslie Thng of Vistara

Vistara Singapore Airlines Tata

“Premium traffic for Vistara has shown a rise despite the economic slowdown” — that’s the word coming in from Leslie Thng, the CEO of Vistara. The chief executive of the full-service airline was speaking to CNBC-TV18’s Anu Sharma on the sidelines of the launch of ‘Club Vistara SBI Card’ a part of the airline’s frequent flyer programme.

Thng said, “Fare is always a function of supply and demand. If the demand is greater than supply, the fare will go up. We continuously make an adjustment to the fare.”

He further added, “The premium traffic on Vistara has actually increased. When we launch a new flight, a new route whether it is domestic or international, there will be time required for the market to accept the new route. So, that is where we are investing resources and we have long term view in terms of whether the market is sustainable, if not we would not even venture into the market.”

Vistara is keen to start operations to London as it gets ready to induct two Boeing 787-9 aircraft by March, Chief Executive Officer Leslie Thng has told CNBC-TV18.

The full-service carrier has plans to commence long-haul operations with the wide-body aircraft and Europe will be an integral part of the plan, Thng added.

“Widebody joining us in Q1 of 2020. First, two B787-9 to be delivered in February, March… we have plans to use B787-9 on long-haul. London is one destination we are keen on. We are  planning and we will announce when we are ready,” Thng said.

Vistara, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has plans to induct a total of six B787-9 aircraft and 50 narrow-body A320 family aircraft.

“Of the 50 narrow-body, 3 have been delivered. We will induct five more planes before the end of this year. We will add a dozen more in 2020,” Thng said, adding that the capacity induction will continue to be used to grow the domestic network and a simultaneous focus will be laid on international expansion.

Talking about the fare environment, Thng said that Vistara has witnessed a rise in premium traffic despite the slowdown and the airline has taken a long-term view on some routes to make them sustainable.

“Fare is always a function of supply and demand. We make continuous adjustments to fare. There will be some time needed for the market to accept some routes. We have taken long term view to make some routes sustainable,” Thng said.

While the airline is yet to be profitable, it has no plans of switching to the business model of low-cost carriers.

“We have seen improvement in operating margin. We are on the right track to see Vistara profitable as soon as possible,” Thng said.

The airline is also scouting for more codeshare partners. Vistara already has codeshare partnership with Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Japan Airlines and Silk Air.

The airline now connects 34 destinations and operates over 200 flights a day via a fleet of 27 A320 and nine Boeing 737-800NG aircraft.

Vistara just launched its first international flight. Read the review

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Many people have long been wondering about Vistara’s international plans. The first flight was a perfectly choreographed affair between the flight crew, the ground crew and the guests.

Many people have long been wondering about Vistara’s international plans. Conceived as a premium carrier based in India with one of the parents, Singapore Airlines (the other Tata group), the airline had a good start in 2015. The first flight was a perfectly choreographed affair between the flight crew, the ground crew and the guests.

The international plans have been delayed for a year due to red tape, but Vistara is sparing no effort for the launch by announcing four international routes in one month itself, with Delhi/Mumbai to Singapore, Mumbai to Dubai and Delhi to Bangkok. Colombo and Kathmandu are in the works.

Vistara’s first flight, launched earlier this week, then was a celebration of the airline’s ambition to become a dominant player in India’s growing international passenger market. The check-in area was dully decked, and there was a small ceremony to announce the launch of international flights.

Colourful Launch

The Vistara brass was there to celebrate the launch of the first international flight, including CEO, Leslie Thng, who was going to fly on the Delhi-Singapore flight, and COO, Sanjiv Kapoor, who headed straight to Mumbai after to be on the launch flight of Mumbai – Singapore.

At the gate as well, there was a song and dance performance by Vistara employees who chose to participate under the tutelage of Shiamak Dawar. Goodie bags and first flight certificates were given away to everyone on the flight.

Vistara has always tried to match the right equipment with the right route. For the Delhi/Mumbai to Singapore route, it picked the narrow-body aircraft from its fleet. The airline picked the Boeing 737 aircraft for the range it offers. The A320 aircraft on the fleet comes up short on such routes.

That means passengers get a two-class experience — business and economy — compared with the three-class experience (premium economy as well) that Vistara usually offers. The airline will upgrade equipment soon as they start getting their new batch of the A320 family aircraft later this year. The Thailand and UAE operations, on the other hand, will get the 3-class experience from day one itself.

What’s On Board

On board the flight, the airline unveiled a gourmet experience for business class passengers, and to an extent, for economy passengers as well. For the first flight, we had an exciting menu with four meal choices, and a good wine list plus top-shelf liquor. The Vistara signature cocktail debuted on the international service as well with a cocktail variant, amongst other things.

I enjoyed the dinner. Even in economy, I gather that passengers will receive menus to be able to choose their entrees.

Can’t get sleep on a plane or are with children? Not to worry. The Vistara World experience has made its way to these aircraft as well, and you can access in-flight entertainment, provided you bring your own device and headphones.

The crew service and hospitality were excellent, delivered with a smile and unobtrusive. The aircraft was nearly full. The airline had a long to-do list, as it happens on inaugural international flights, but the crew held their cool.

There were a lot of senior citizens flying business class, and each of them were cared for genuinely, right down to the crew filling up their landing cards because the passengers couldn’t make sense of some fields. Having said that, the crew were not in your face walking through the cabin every five minutes or so.

In my personal experience, that service standard would count for a lot as the airline expands on other international routes in the days ahead. There was a frequent napkin service, and passengers did not have to wonder if they had to live with a hot or cold towel because both choices were offered.

For the five-hour flights, Vistara is planning to use single-aisle aircraft for now, which would mean they are going to compete on current and future product upgrades and the passenger experience to compete with Singapore Airlines and Air India on this route. Passengers now have to be content with cradle business-class seats with footrests for now.

Vistara has also been aggressive with its pricing. On the same route, Air India is up to 33 percent more expensive on a round-trip basis. Singapore Airlines tickets are 75 percent more costlier. Ergo, I foresee plenty of business travellers moving to this product in the coming days because you arrive in Singapore early and rested for meetings.

Vistara finally gets permission to fly international routes

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Ltd, has finally received approval to launch international flights.

Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Ltd, has finally received approval to launch international flights, as the Narendra Modi government ended the airline’s long wait with one of its last significant decisions before the end of its tenure.

Civil aviation secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola on Wednesday said the government has given permission to Vistara to fly internationally.

The airline received permission from the aviation ministry just before the election dates were announced, a person familiar with the matter told CNBCTV18.com.

“We are closely working with the ministry of civil aviation. Specific details will be shared at an appropriate time,” Vistara Spokesperson said.

The airline had initially hoped to launch international flights last year after meeting a requirement for 20 aircraft in its fleet.

The Election Commission announced the dates for the general elections on March 10.

Vistara is expected to launch its inaugural flight to Colombo in the summer using the open skies arrangement India has with Sri Lanka, the person quoted above said. The airline doesn’t have a date yet, the person said, adding that the date of launch will depend on several factors. The person didn’t elaborate.

Vistara had to use one jet earmarked for international flying in the domestic market, CEO Leslie Thng told reporters at the CAPA India conference in February, adding that delays in regulatory approvals for international flights have had only a limited impact on the airline.

Aviation market is highly competitive in India, says IATA CEO Alexandre De Juniac

Delhi airport

It was an action-packed day at the Global Aviation Summit. CNBC-TV18’s Anu Sharma caught up with who’s who from the industry including Vistara CEO Leslie Thng and IATA CEO Alexandre De Juniac.

Leslie Thng said, “When we look at it in terms of domestic as well as international, domestic is one that we will continue to increase frequency. We are also planning to start another one or two more new destinations within the country, we will soon make the announcement. As far as international is concerned we will be starting soon and India will be the host of new destinations that we will be embarking on.”

Alexandre De Juniac said, “Aviation market is highly competitive market particularly in India, so the growth has been fantastic. It is the fastest growing market and it has gone along with a sharp decline in fares but also with some difficulties coming from global macroeconomic environment inputs.”

In a first in Indian airports, full-service carrier, Vistara, has created an artificial intelligence enabled robot named ‘RADA’ to assist travellers, address their queries and entertain them.

The robot will be placed at Vistara’s signature lounge at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3 from July 5 to help customers using the lounge before they board their flights.

At present, the robot can scan the boarding passes, provide information on the terminal, departure gates, weather conditions of destination city, real time flight status as well as information about Vistara’s products and services, Vistara said.

RADA was designed with the help of technology experts from Tata Innovative Lab and with the support from students of reputed institutions, the company said.

“With RADA, we aim to change the way people interact and fly with an airline. We will be developing ‘RADA’ based on customer feedback and equipping it with the most effective features in the time to come,” Leslie Thng, Vistara’s Chief Executive Officer, said.

RADA is built on a chassis of four wheels, enabling it to rotate 360 degrees and it has three in-built cameras for cognitive interaction, Vistara added.

Vistara, is a joint venture between Tata Sons Limited and Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA).
