IPL is a great thing but it can also spoil careers, warns Kapil Dev amid injury concerns for the Indian team

Summary

Amid all the noise, Kapil Dev has been at the forefront of things when it comes to his opinion about players’ injuries or their decision to play in IPL tournaments.

After India’s defeat against West Indies in the second ODI, there’s been a lot of chatter around the team’s form and their chance in the World Cup 2023. Amid all the noise, Kapil Dev has been at the forefront of things when it comes to his opinion about players’ injuries or their decision to play in the IPL.

Recently, in an interview with The Week, the former Indian captain stated that players’ decision to play in the IPL amid mild injuries can cost them in the long term.

“God is kind, it’s not as if I never got injured. But today, they are playing 10 months in a year. Give a benefit of doubt to that, but everybody has to look after themselves. IPL is a great thing but IPL can spoil you also. Because of a few injuries and you will play in IPL. A little bit of injuries, you won’t play for India. You would take a break. I’m being very open about it,” said the legendary all-rounder.

Kapil Dev also questioned the health progress of pacer Jasprit Bumrah who has been out of the field for over a year. He raised concern about Bumrah’s absence in World Cup as he is one of the most lethal bowlers of the Indian team and missing out on him could be a huge loss for the host team.

“What happened to Bumrah? He started working with so much belief, but if he’s not there in the World Cup semi-final or in the final we wasted time on him. Rishabh Pant… such a great cricketer. Had he been there, our Test cricket would’ve been better,” Kapil questioned.

Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid said that the team is experimenting with some alternate choices in the playing XI so that they have some game time behind them if the players currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru do not recover in time for the Asia Cup or the World Cup. The Men in Blue rested skipper Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli to accomodate Sanju Samson and Axar Patel in the side in the second ODI against West Indies in Dominica.

GOAT debate | Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar? Kapil Dev tackles the bouncer

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

With Kohli on the cusp of overtaking Tendulkar in terms of the number of ODI centuries, the debate on who is a better batter in the format has started growing louder.Fans, cricket experts, and former cricketers, no one is being spared of the inevitable Kohli vs Tendulkar debate.  Legendary cricketer and India’s former World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, was also caught in this crossfire recently.

It is an age-old debate. The greatest of one generation gets compared to the greatest of another in a bid for the much-in-vogue GOAT (greatest of all-time) title.

As Virat Kohli nears Sachin Tendulkar’s one-day international (ODI) record of  49 hundreds, the debate has been rekindled and now, Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup-winning captain, has weighed in.

By smashing three centuries in his last 6 ODI outings, Kohli has reached 46 ODI tons. With the kind of form that Kohli is enjoying in the format and with the number of ODI matches that India is poised to play this year, Kohli is very likely to break Tendulkar’s long-standing record sooner than later.

Kapil had to face the question during his interview with Gulfnews. The all-rounder, who turned 64 this month, tackled the question in a way that he used to deal with the bowlers and the batsmen during his playing days.

On the raging debate, Kapil said: “A player of that calibre, you don’t have to pick one or two. It’s a team of XI players. I might have my own likes or dislikes, but every generation is going to get better. In our time, Sunil Gavaskar was one of the finest then we saw Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag and this generation Rohit, Virat and the next generation will be better. You will see a better cricketer performing better.”

Kapil also believes that India is capable enough to win this year’s 50-over World Cup, that the Indian fast bowlers need to bowl more and Suryakumar Yadav is a fabulous player.

T20 World Cup 2022: Kapil Dev labels Team India ‘chokers’ after T20 WC exit

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Without mincing any words, former India captain Kapil Dev has labelled the Indian team as ‘chokers’ after their crushing exit from the T20 World Cup.

Several experts have slammed Team India following their embarrassing ouster from the T20 World Cup. Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has joined that list as he has labelled the current Indian team as “chokers” after its elimination from the T20 WC following a 10-wicket drubbing by England in the second semifinal in Adelaide.

The heavy defeat on Thursday, November 10 marked India’s fifth knockout loss in the last six World Cups.

Also Read | T20 World Cup 2022: Are India the new chokers of international cricket?

“I will not go into the details and slam them because these are the same players who have gotten us a lot of respect in the past but yes, we can call them chokers. That’s okay. There is no denying it — after coming so close, they choke,” Kapil told ABP News.

The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper, however, said fans should not be too critical of the team’s performance in the semifinals.

“I agree, India played bad cricket, but we cannot be overly critical based on just one game.

“See, now that the match is over, it is unfair that we should come down this hard on the Indian team. Yes, they did not play well and criticism is justified. But as far as today’s match, all we can say is that England read the pitch better and played better cricket,” explained Kapil.

Kapil said the youngsters must come forward now and take the team to the top.

“I would say that the team needs to look ahead. It’s time for the younger players to come forward and take charge,” added the former India captain. India last won an ICC tournament in 2013 when they beat England to claim the Champions Trophy.

Since then, they have qualified for the knockout stages of the 2014 T20 World Cup (final), 2015 ODI World Cup (semifinal), 2016 T20 World Cup (semifinal), 2017 Champions Trophy (final), 2019 ODI World Cup (semifinal), 2021 World Test Championship Final, the 2022 T20 World Cup (semifinal), but lost all of them.

England completely outplayed India by reaching the target of 169 in just 16 overs with opener Alex Hales and captain Jos Buttler slamming unbeaten half-centuries.

From MS Dhoni to Kapil Dev, 6 cricketers who have aced at other sports

The man of many talents, Dhoni featured in the Jharkhand State Cricket Association’s tennis tournament. He started his campaign on a winning note by partnering with Sumeet Kumar Bajaj in the men’s doubles category on Tuesday, November 8. It is no more a secret that Mahi used to play football in school as a goalkeeper. Seeing that, his sports coach asked him to start wicket-keeping in cricket. Last year, the Chennai Super Kings skipper showed off his football skills in a celebrity charity match with Bollywood stars. But Dhoni isn’t the only cricketer who plays different sports. There are others too, who excel in multiple sports. (Image: Reuters)
Kapil Dev (Golf) |  Cricketers are known to be good at golf. But not many match the quality of India’s first World Cup-winning captain. The legendary all-rounder has represented India in a number of senior amateur golf tournaments and his love for the sport is known to everyone. In September this year, he launched the Kapil Dev-Grant Thorton Invitational golf tournament, which had prize money of Rs 1 crore. (Image: Reuters)
Yuzvendra Chahal (Chess) | The Indian leg-spinner might be making batters dance to the tune of his spin on the pitch but back in the day, he himself had brilliant moves in chess. Yuzi is a former national Under-12 chess champion and has the distinction of representing India at the World Youth Chess Championships. He is also listed on the World Chess Federation (FIDE) website. Chahal’s Elo rating is 1956. (Image: Reuters)
Andrew Flintoff (Boxing) |  The former England captain was a force to reckon with on the field. He gave several memorable performances with both bat and ball for his side over the years. The 2005 Ashes is still remembered for the all-rounder’s antics. Post-retirement from cricket, Freddie Flintoff turned into a pro boxer and defeated American boxer Richard Dawson in his maiden bout in 2012. However, Flintoff hasn’t returned to the ring after that although he vowed to remain active in the sport. (Image: Reuters)
Jonty Rhodes (Hockey, tennis & football) |  The South African legend made a name for himself as arguably the best fielder the game has ever seen. He was also a useful middle-order batter. But cricket isn’t the only sport Jonty Rhodes played! In fact, he was a good hockey player as well. He played state-level hockey. The man also played junior state-level tennis and football. (Image: Reuters)
Nathan Astle (Football and auto racing) |  The former New Zealand batter is remembered for the fastest double ton in Tests. He was explosive at the top in limited-overs cricket and was pretty handy with the ball too. Astle finished with over 11,000 international runs and 150-plus wickets. But there was more to the Kiwi cricketer. He played football for Rangers AFC in Christchurch and post-retirement, he enjoyed a successful stint in auto racing. Astle finished third in the South Island Sprint Car Championship in 2010. He has also tried his hand at golf like many other cricketers. (Image: Reuters)

Airtel carried out the demonstration at its Network Experience Center in Manesar (Gurugram) using Ericsson 5G gear over 3,500 MHz band test spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecom.

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Monday showcased the possibilities of 5G era, as it harnessed immersive video technology using the next generation network, to recreate in-stadia experience of Kapil Dev’s legendary 175-run inning from the 1983 cricket World Cup. Airtel also demonstrated a live 5G-powered hologram as the legendary cricketer’s virtual avatar interacted with the audience in real-time from a remote location.

“Using cutting-edge immersive video technologies over its high-speed 5G test network, Airtel recreated the in-stadia experience of Kapil Dev’s famous 175 not out vs Zimbabwe during the 1983 cricket World Cup,” Airtel said in a release. The demo brought to life key moments from the match which had no actual video footage due to a strike at that time by TV technicians.

With over 1 Gbps of internet speed, more than 50 concurrent users had a highly personalised 4K video experience of the match on 5G smartphones with real-time access to multiple camera angles, 360-degree in-stadia view, shot analysis and statistics. Airtel carried out the demonstration at its Network Experience Center in Manesar (Gurugram) using Ericsson 5G gear over 3,500 MHz band test spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecom.

During the demo, a 5G-powered virtual avatar of Kapil Dev appeared on the stage and interacted with the audience and walked them through the key moments of his innings. Randeep Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said that gigabit speeds and millisecond latency of 5G is set to transform the way entertainment is consumed.

“With today’s demonstration, we have only scratched the surface of the infinite possibilities of 5G and highly personalised immersive experiences in the digital world. With 5G based holograms, we will be able to transport virtual avatars to any location, and this will be a game changer for meetings and conferences, live news, and will have so many other use cases,” Sekhon said. Airtel said it is fully prepared for 5G amid the emerging digital world, and is building a robust pipeline of innovative use cases for India.

Sharing his experience, Kapil Dev added: “I am simply amazed by the power of 5G technology and seeing my digital avatar interact with my fans as if I am actually there.” Earlier this year, Airtel had demonstrated the country’s first 5G experience over a live 4G network. It has also demonstrated its rural 5G trial as well as the first cloud gaming experience on 5G. Spectrum auctions are slated to be held in 2022 to facilitate the roll-out of 5G mobile services within 2022-23 by private telecom providers.

The market is gearing up for the roll-out of 5G services that will usher in ultra high-speed internet and spawn new-age services and business models. Telecom regulator’s recommendations on spectrum pricing and other modalities are expected to come soon.

IND vs SL 2nd Test: Rishabh Pant shatters Kapil Dev and Ian Smith records in one go

Summary

Rishabh Pant smashed former Indian captain Kapil Dev’s record of fastest Test fifty by an Indian when he blasted 50 off just 28 balls on Day 2 of India’s 2nd Test against Sri Lanka. He also broke former Aussie wicketkeeper Ian Smityj’s record of quickest half-century by a keeper in the process.

Stylish left-hand wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Sunday broke the legendary Kapil Dev’s 40-year-old record of fastest Test fifty by an Indian on the second day of the Day/Night match against Sri Lanka at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Pant smashed his fifty in just 28 balls hitting seven fours and two sixes. He reached the milestone in the 42nd over of India’s second innings when he hit a Praveen Jayawickrama delivery through the extra cover boundary.

India’s first World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev had cracked a 30-ball half-century against Pakistan in the Karachi Test in 1982.

Pant also set a world record for notching up the fastest fifty by a wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, bettering the efforts of Australia’s Ian Smith and former India captain MS Dhoni (both scored 34-ball fifty).

Pant, however, could not make it big and got out in the same score and over, giving Jayawickrama a return catch in the final delivery. Shardul Thakur is the third in the list of fastest Test fifty by an Indian with his 31-ball half-century in the Oval Test against England last year.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has scored a 32-ball 50 against England in Chennai in 2008.
