Madhya Pradesh Lok Sabha elections 2024: Full list of BJP candidates

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Madhya Pradesh has 29 Lok Sabha seats, making it the sixth-largest state by parliamentary representation.

Madhya Pradesh is an important battlefield for political parties in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as it has a significant number of seats. Over the last two elections, the people’s verdict in Madhya Pradesh’s Lok Sabha elections has been in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The saffron party has registered landslide victories. The state will go to polls in four of the seven phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, and May 13.

Madhya Pradesh has 29 Lok Sabha seats, making it the sixth-largest state by parliamentary representation.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP won 28 of MP’s 29 seats, while the Congress won only from Chhindwara.

The Lok Sabha polls also come months after the BJP’s impressive victory in the Assembly elections.

The opposition Congress was certain that it would topple the Shivraj Chouhan-led BJP government, which had ruled for almost 20 years — except for a brief 15-month interlude following the 2018 elections — in the state assembly elections scheduled for 2023.

The grand old party managed to get only 66 seats. In comparison, the BJP emerged victorious, securing 163 of the 230 assembly seats. The goal of the BJP is to repeat its triumph in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as well.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has already declared candidates for each of the state’s 29 Lok Sabha seats. The list is as follows:

1. Shivraj Singh Chouhan  Vidisha

Pilots tell Aviation Minister: Don’t prioritise airlines’ interest over pilots’ safety

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) claimed that indefinite deferral of revised rest and duty hours by the aviation regulator endangers the safety of pilots as well as undermines the safety of passengers.

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) on Friday, March 29, wrote to Union Civil  Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) demanding the implementation of revised rest and duty hours for pilots. This comes after the DGCA on Tuesday (March 26) deferred the implementation of the new rules under the revised Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR).

In its letter to Scindia, the FIP claimed that indefinite deferral by the DGCA not only endangers the safety of pilots but also undermines the safety of passengers. The federation stressed that the health and safety of pilots cannot be prejudiced for the financial gains of operators.

In its letter, the FIP said, “The action of the DGCA not only endanger pilot safety but also undermine the safety of passengers which the implementation ofthe Revised CAR could prevent. Furthermore, the health and safety of the pilots cannot be prejudiced for the commercial benefit of the operators.”

“The latest revision by the DGCA has made the Revised CAR a dead letter of the law as it has effectively granted operators discretionary powers in implementing the Revised CAR, a decision that, as you duly recognise, does not serve the interests of pilots and the aviation sector in India,” the FIP added.

The revised rules that would have provided more rest to pilots were due to be implemented on June 1, 2024. However, the domestic airlines’ body, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), sought additional time from the aviation regulator to implement the new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms that were released under the Revised CAR on January 8.

Initially, the DGCA had quashed two appeals—on February 22 and March 6—by FIA seeking deferment for the implementation of revised rest and fatigue management norms, directing them to ensure they implement revised rules by June 1.

However, the aviation regulator stated on March 26 that the airlines would continue to follow the existing norms and had deferred the revised norms indefinitely.

The indefinite deferral contrasts with Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s post on X on January 8.

“After in-depth analysis of pilot rosters, fatigue-related reports, and direct feedback from pilots, we have introduced revised “FDTL Regulations” that include increased rest periods, redefining night duty, and regular fatigue reports to be shared by airlines,” Scindia said in his post on X.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: From Guna to Chhindwara, key seats in Madhya Pradesh

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In the 2019 general elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 28 of the 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, restricting Congress to just one.

The general elections in India will be held in seven phases starting on April 19 and concluding on June 1. Madhya Pradesh, which sends 29 MPs to the Lok Sabha, will go to polls in four phases. The counting of votes takes place on June 4.

Of the 29 seats in the state, 10 are reserved for the SC and ST candidates, while the rest are unreserved.

Polling across six Lok Sabha seats will be held on April 19, followed by seven constituencies on April 26, and eight each on May 7 and May 13, respectively.

During the 2019 general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 28 of the 29 seats, restricting the Congress to just one seat. While the BJP managed a 58% vote share last time, the Congress could only manage 34.5% votes.

After a resounding victory in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections — taking 163 of the 230 seats in the Legislative Assembly — the BJP leaders have expressed hope for a clean sweep in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the Congress with the help of the INDIA bloc is looking forward to potential comeback in the state.

Here’s a look at some of the key Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh:

  1. Guna

A bastion of the Scindia family, the seat witnessed the Congress suffer a huge upset in 2019 when Jyotiraditya Scindia lost to BJP’s KP Singh Yadav by over 1.2 lakh votes. Later in 2020, Scindia, along with other Congress leaders, joined the BJP. Earlier, this seat was represented six times by his grandmother Vijaya Raje Scindia and four times by his father Madhavrao Scindia.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, currently the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, is BJP’s candidate for the Guna seat in 2024. The Congress is yet to announce its candidate against Scindia.

  1. Chhindwara

A stronghold of the Congress, this seat in the Mahakoshal region has been represented in Parliament nine times by former Chief Minister Kamal Nath. Meanwhile, his wife Alka Nath won from here in 1996, while their son Nakul Nath bagged it in 2019. This time, the BJP has fielded Vivek Sahu from this seat against Nakul Nath.

  1. Vidisha

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is returning to national politics after around two decades. Chouhan will be contesting his sixth parliamentary election from the Vidisha seat, which was earlier held by BJP stalwarts Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1991) and Sushma Swaraj (2009 and 2014).

In 2019, BJP’s Ramakant Bhargava defeated Congress’ Shailendra Patel by over 5 lakh votes from this seat.

  1. Bhopal

The BJP has been winning this seat since 1989. Some of the prominent party leaders, Uma Bharti (1999) and former chief minister Kailash Joshi (2004 and 2009) have contested Lok Sabha polls from here. In 2019, BJP’s Pragya Singh Thakur defeated veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh by a margin of 3.65 lakh votes. However, the ruling party has this time replaced Thakur with Alok Sharma.

  1. Mandla

BJP’s Faggan Singh Kulaste lost last year’s Assembly elections that he contested as a Union Minister and sitting Lok Sabha member from the Mandla seat. The party has once again announced Kulaste as its candidate from Mandla. He will contest the polls against Congress’ sitting MLA from Dindori Omkar Singh Markam.

The Scindias: Moving seamlessly between parties in different elections on their home turf

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Scindias, the influential members of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior, have moved effortlessly between different political parties when it comes to fighting electoral battles on their home turf and Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will carry forward this tradition when he files his nomination as the BJP candidate from the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh.

The Scindias, the influential members of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior, have moved effortlessly between different political parties when it comes to fighting electoral battles on their home turf and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will carry forward this tradition when he files his nomination as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh.

Five years after losing unexpectedly from Guna as the Congress candidate, Jyotiraditya Scindia, representing the current generation of the family in MP’s politics, is back in the fray in his backyard, but this time as the nominee of his erstwhile political rival and with a different election symbol against his name on the EVM.

The 53-year-old politician is the grandson of one of the BJP founders, Vijaya Raje Scindia, and son of former Union minister the late Madhavrao Scindia. The Guna Lok Sabha seat, part of the Scindias’ home turf which also includes Gwalior, is spread across eight assembly seats in Guna, Shivpuri and Ashok Nagar districts.

The Congress, looking to settle scores with Jyotiraditya Scindia in the poll fray after it lost its government in Madhya Pradesh following his exit exactly four years ago, is yet to name its candidate from Guna.

It was a rare electoral shock for former Gwalior royals when the Union Minister for Civil Aviation faced defeat in 2019 at the hands of the BJP candidate and his old loyalist, KP Yadav, by a margin of around 1.26 lakh votes.

In 2024, Scindia is again testing electoral waters, but under the banner of a different party – the BJP – the political home to his parental aunts – former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia and ex-MP minister Yashodhara Raje.

But the Guna Lok Sabha constituency’s history suggested the Scindias have never fought their first and last elections from the same party.

The Union minister’s grandmother, Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia, contested her first election from the seat in 1957 on a Congress ticket and won. She contested as the Swatantra Party nominee in 1967 then from the BJP in 1989.

His father Madhavrao Scindia contested his first election from Guna on a Bharatiya Jan Sangh (BJS) ticket in 1971 and fought his last poll in 1999 as the Congress nominee before his death in a plane crash near New Delhi in 2001. The BJS is considered the forerunner of the BJP.

Senior journalist, author and political analyst Rasheed Kidwai says the Scindias’ political leanings seem to be settling down now.

“After decades of consciously choosing divergent political parties, the House of Scindias is finally settling down as per their past and ideological leanings. The Sangh, Hindutva, and right-wing has always been Scindia’s flavour in the monarchical era,” Kidwai noted.

The Guna parliamentary seat was represented by Rajmata Scindia six times, while her son Madhavrao Scindia won it on four occasions.

Besides Guna, Rajmata Scindia represented the Gwalior Lok Sabha seat, part of the family turf, once. Madhavrao Scindia was elected five times from Gwalior, once as the candidate of the Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress, an outfit floated by him.

Rajmata Scindia’s daughter Yashodhara Raje also represented the Gwalior seat in the Lok Sabha twice for the BJP.

Jyotiraditya Scindia has represented the Guna seat four times between 2002 and 2014, including after winning in a bypoll. A year after his defeat, he joined the BJP in March 2020 along with 22 Congress MLAs, leading to the collapse of the Kamal Nath-led government in Madhya Pradesh.

The defeat of Jyotiraditya Scindia in 2019 was the second setback for the Scindias in the Lok Sabha elections. In 1984, the Union minister’s aunt and former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje had faced defeat as the BJP candidate from the Bhind Lok Sabha seat. She was defeated by Congress candidate Krishna Singh Judeo, who belongs to the erstwhile royal family of Datia.

The Guna Lok Sabha constituency has more than 18.80 lakh voters and it will go to polls in the third phase on May 7.

Jyotiraditya Scindia to inaugurate India’s first green hydrogen plant on Feb 27

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The minister will conduct the virtual inauguration of this pioneering project in Haryana, marking a significant milestone for Jindal Stainless Ltd and positioning it as the first stainless steel company in India to operate such a facility on a commercial scale.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will unveil the stainless steel industry’s first green hydrogen project on Tuesday (February 27), established by Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) in Hisar, Haryana.

The minister will virtually inaugurate this project, marking a significant milestone for JSL and positioning it as the first stainless steel company in India to operate such a pioneering facility on a commercial scale, as confirmed by officials to news agency PTI.

The green hydrogen project, a state-of-the-art facility, aims to make substantial contributions to carbon emissions reduction, targeting approximately 2,700 metric tonnes per annum and an impressive 54,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the course of 20 years, as per insiders, PTI reported.

Despite the limited details provided, the initiative underscores the industry’s commitment to environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

Notably, in August 2022, Jindal Stainless Ltd, the country’s largest stainless steel player, had announced a strategic partnership with Hygenco India Private Limited to establish a green hydrogen plant in Hisar, Haryana. This collaborative effort, heralded as a first-of-its-kind initiative, is expected to propel the transition from thermal to clean energy within the Indian manufacturing sector.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of JSL, had previously expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact, stating, “As a first, the green hydrogen plant will catalyse our transition from thermal to clean energy in the Indian manufacturing space. Going forward, we will continue our ESG (environmental, social, and governance) efforts to achieve net zero emissions and power conservation.”

CAT III enabled runway 10/28 is operational now at Delhi airport, says DIAL

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Now, Delhi airport has four operational runways — RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28, and RW 11L/29R. The closure of runway RW 10/28, which can handle flight operations at low visibility, was cited as one of the reasons in certain quarters for the congestion during the fog season.

Delhi airport operator DIAL on Saturday said the re-carpeted runway RW 10/28 is operational now.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the country’s largest airport, now has four operational runways. In recent times, the airport has witnessed fog-induced operational disruptions that resulted in flight delays, cancellations, and diversions as well as passengers facing long waiting hours and congestion.

The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said the re-carpeting and refurbishment work of RW 10/28, also known as the second runway, has been successfully completed and handed over to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) for commercial operations from February 3.

“DIAL had undertaken the much-needed re-carpeting work of the 3,813 metre-long and 45 meter-wide second runway in the middle of September 2023, just after the conclusion of the historic G20 Summit. Re-carpeting work of the runway was completed in December 2023, after which Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) operationalisation was taken up,” it said in a statement.

The closure of runway RW 10/28, which can handle flight operations at low visibility, was cited as one of the reasons in certain quarters for the congestion during the fog season.

“The CAT III enabled Runway 10/28 at the Delhi Airport has been operationalised today. This would ensure further mitigation of weather-related congestion issues,” Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in a post on X.

The re-carpeting works included milling the entire length of the runway and overlaying it with Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB).

PMB is bitumen combined with one or more polymer materials which enhances the mechanical properties of the bitumen material and it can withstand heavy-duty traffic and extreme weather conditions, the statement said.

According to DIAL, the rehabilitation work of RW 10/28 was taken up for improved passenger experience, including the induction of a few additional taxiways.

“With the completion of rehabilitation work, Delhi airport would become future-ready for undertaking operations at its full capacity. The passenger handling capacity of its three terminals would increase to 100 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) and the airside capacity will enhance to handle 140 MPPA,” the statement said.

Now, Delhi airport has four operational runways — RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28, and RW 11L/29R.

In a message to the staff last month, Air India chief Campbell Wilson said the airline was looking at building a larger pool of pilots who can operate in low visibility conditions, better roster planning and schedule buffers as well as more pre-emptive flight cancellations to deal with disruptions.

“… as most of you in northern India are well aware we’re in the ‘thick’ (so to speak) of an unusually bad fog season. This, coupled with the unfortunately-timed closure of one of Delhi’s two ‘low-visibility’ runways for repair, has significantly impacted all airlines’ operations, with consequential effect on staff and, of course, customers,” Wilson said on January 25.

Shashi Tharoor’s ‘switching sides’ response to Scindia’s ‘arm-chair’ jibe

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The war of words between Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia continued on X as Tharoor replied to Scindia’s response after the Congress MP had criticised the ministry for a 12-hour flight delay after which passengers were seen eating meals on the tarmac of Delhi’s IGI Airport, which he termed a shocking security breach.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor came with a comeback to Scindia’s arm-chair swipe and said that since switching sides the Civil Aviation Minister has ‘adopted the Modi Government’s uncaring attitude to the public.’

The series of arguments started after Tharoor targeted Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia over the insufficient number of trained pilots to land planes on CAT III-B compliant runways at Delhi airport that are equipped for aircraft to land with a minimum visibility of up to 50 metres. This comes as several flights were cancelled or delayed at Delhi airport, making passengers wait for several hours as the national capital grappled with cold weather.

Taking a hit at Scindia and the ruling government, Tharoor said, “My dear @JM_Scindia, it’s a pity that since switching sides you have adopted the Modi Government’s uncaring attitude to the public. As @RahulGandhi said during the #BharatJodoNyayYatra, it’s clear the suffering of the people is not the suffering of this Government.”

“Crores worth of economic value lost, lakhs of lives disrupted, and thousands of people unable to go about their daily lives during this festive season – and all the Hon Minister can do is to engage in name-calling,” Tharoor added.

He added that he is not denying that there has been some growth and nor was he blaming the government for the bad weather. He suggested that there are a ‘number of shortcomings’ in the government’s planning and its failure to take proactive action on problems that could easily have been anticipated.

In reply to Tharoor’s post alleging Scindia of incompetence in a series of tweets, the minister replied, “It is for someone who is lost in his esoteric world of thesaurus that data mining of selective press articles from the internet qualifies as ‘research’.”

In his earlier post on X, Tharoor criticised the Aviation Ministry for a 12-hour flight delay, after which passengers were seen eating meals on the tarmac of IGI airport, which he termed a shocking security breach.

Tharoor highlighted the inability of the Union Aviation Ministry and Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to plan a CAT III-C that would allow landing flights even at zero visibility, even after the UPA government ensured a CAT III-B system in 2008. Tharoor also claimed that they did not ensure that the pilots who flew to Delhi during fog conditions were trained to land on CAT III-B runways.

Scindia responded by calling Tharoor an “arm-chair critic,” posting a series of posts, terming them “actual facts.”

Shashi Tharoor pointed out that the Delhi Airport had witnessed chaos and said, “In all its wisdom, the Modi government began maintenance work on one of the two CAT III-B runways in September 2023, fully aware that it would not be ready for the winter!”

“Even worse, a crane from some other construction work was blocking operation of CAT III-B on one runway, even after repairs were complete. Delhi Airport flagged this over 10 days ago, on Jan 5, but no action was taken,” the Congress MP added.

In his reply, Scindia took a jibe and clarified, “The crane was being used for the construction of another critical infrastructure project – the Dwarka Expressway.”

Scindia added that the treatment meted out to the passengers in the instant case was unacceptable, and they have acted immediately in the form of a show cause notice to the concerned operators. Scindia also issued SOPs on Monday (January 15) to improve communication and passenger facilitation in an attempt to reduce discomfort for passengers.

In his concluding post, Scindia said, “Under the NDA govt, along with Akasa, five new regional airlines have taken birth under the PM’s UDAN vision. Fleet size has increased from 400 in 2014 to 730 today, and will reach 1,500- 2,000 by 2030. Airports have doubled from 74 in the last 65 years to 149 today. This will reach 220 in the next 3-4 years.”

This came as a reply to Tharoor’s claim that the aviation industry is primarily controlled by two groups, “Once a highly competitive industry with many different airlines and cheap fares, now 90% of the market is controlled by just two groups. Market concentration anywhere and everywhere fosters high prices and poor customer service.”

On Sunday (January 14), over 400 flights were delayed across India, multiple flights were cancelled, and several were diverted because of poor visibility. According to Delhi airport sources, the CAT III compliant runway was not functioning because there was zero visibility and operations started to limp back to normal only after the weather started to clear.
