IPL 2024 Points Table: KKR seal top-4 finish, check which teams are in contention for playoffs

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 standings are heating up as the conclusion of the first round of the tournament nears. Playoffs will begin on May 21 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the only team to have secured a place in the top-four so far. KKR have won nine games from the opening 12 matches, aggregating 18 points and booking a berth in the playoffs.

Following them in the list are Rajasthan Royals (16), Sunrisers Hyderabad (14), and the Chennai Super Kings (12). With three games in the bank, RR are almost certain to get at least one or a few more wins and then enter the playoffs. SRH and CSK are in delicate situations. Both have played 12 games, but the former have accumulated 14 points compared to the 12 of the latter.

There is some competition for the third and fourth spots on the points table. While SRH and CSK occupy them for now, Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are equally in a tussle with 12 points to their name. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have won four out of their previous five matches to come to 10 points and could complete the leage stage with 14 points.

Gujarat Titans (GT) halted their poor run in form with a fantastic victory against CSK in Ahmedabad, and that ensures that they aren’t out of the top-four race. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoffs fight. PBKS have exited in the group stages for the 15th time in the 17 seasons of the IPL, whereas MI’s search for a sixth IPL title will now extend until at least next year. They last won the championship in 2020.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Ravindra Jadeja became the first player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to get dismissed for obstructing the field against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in their fixture on Sunday.

Sanju Samson’s throw from the wicket-keeper’s end ended up hitting Jadeja who was sprinting back after skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad refused him a second run. It was adjudged that Jadeja changed the path of his sprint and was dismissed as per the norms. What do the rules of the game say about a batter getting out in such demeanour?

Law 37 of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rule book is concerned about this particular norm, which is as follows:

37.1.1 “Either batter is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, and while the ball is in play, he/she wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action. See also Law 34 (Hit the ball twice).”

37.1.2 “The striker is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, in the act of receiving a ball delivered by the bowler, he/she wilfully strikes the ball with a hand not holding the bat. This will apply whether it is the first strike or a second or subsequent strike. The act of receiving the ball shall extend both to playing at the ball and to striking the ball more than once in defence of his/her wicket.”

37.1.3 “This Law will apply whether or not No ball is called.”

Does the bowler get any credit for this dismissal? 

Much like a run out, a bowler gets no credit when a batter is dismissed for obstructing the field.

Under what circumstances is a batter excused for obstructing the field?

Only if a batter obstructs the field in order to prevent an injury or makes a second legal attempt to stop the ball from hitting the stumps as per Law 34.3 is when this offence is let go of by the umpires.

What is the concerned delivery is a No Ball? 

That doesn’t matter. The one-run penalty for no ball and any run completed before the error was committed will be added to the batting team’s tally. However, the player will still be dismissed, though the incoming batter or the other striker will face a free hit in the subsequent delivery.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed obstructing the field during their chase against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture on Sunday. Jadeja scored five off seven deliveries, but was sent back to the dressing room at a crucial juncture of the second innings.

In the penultimate delivery of the 16th over, Jadeja dabbed the ball to third man and ran a quick single. He was returning for a second, but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad refused the double, resulting in Jadeja sprinting back to the crease.

However, Sanju Samson aimed for a direct hit that ended up deflecting off Jadeja, with RR appealing for his dismissal through obstruction of the field rule. The third umpire adjudged that Jadeja had indeed changed the direction of his run and was hence adjudged out citing the rules, making this the first such instance in IPL 2024.

Law 37 of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rule book is concerned about this particular norm, which is as follows:

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has had a stellar run with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign.

Whilst his captaincy record has delivered mixed returns, securing six wins and losses each in 12 matches so far, he has ensured that this doesn’t take a toll on his returns whilst opening the innings. As CSK hosted Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Chepauk on Sunday, onus was on Gaikwad to cap off their 142-run chase successfully against the second-placed side.

What is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s record in IPL 2024? 

At the time of writing this report, Gaikwad has scored 555 runs in 13 games at an average and strike rate of 55.50 and 144.91 respectively, with the help of four half-centuries and a solitary ton. He has hit 57 fours and 17 sixes, delivering incredible returns in the aforementioned metrics, which are the highest in the five years that he has played in the IPL.

What is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s record at Chepauk?

More importantly, Gaikwad has always thrived playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, which is the home ground of CSK. In 14 matches there, Gaikwad has notched 664 runs at an average of 55.33, striking runs at 143.10. He has slammed five half-centuries and a ton, scoring 27.02% of his team’s runs in matches held at the ground.

He is one of the only three players in CSK history, along with Murali Vijay and Shane Watson, to have scored multiple centuries for the team in the IPL.

KKR’s Ramandeep fined 20% match fees for breaching IPL code of conduct

Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders medium pacer Ramandeep Singh has been fined 20 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during their match against Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens here.

The 27-year-old committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.

For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.

KKR on Saturday notched up an 18-run win over Mumbai Indians in a rain-curtailed match to become the first team to seal a playoffs berth this season.

Ramandeep scored 17 off 8 balls in the match.

Chennai Super Kings will play the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk in what could very well be the last home game for MS Dhoni in his Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

CSK could fail to make it to the playoffs and they don’t play at the venue after this, and given the injury concerns that Dhoni is dealing with coupled with the mega auctions coming in next year, it seems unlikely that the former India captain will continue donning the role of a player for the franchise.

RR are second in the points table with 16 points from 11 matches, whereas CSK are fourth with 12 from as many games.

“We’ve seen earlier on, when he recovered from knee surgery last year, which was quite debilitating for him, [that] there was a certain workload this year that he can manage,” head coach Stephen Fleming had said before their previous match against the Gujarat Titans.

Fleming added, “We’re valuing some other things. Physically it’s risky. We’ve seen early on in the season, a little bit of muscle injury – if he does bat too long, we run the risk of losing him. So we’re trying to find that balance where he can have an impact on the match.”
