NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through roof of Florida home came from space station

NASA confirmed Monday that a mystery object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month was a chunk of space junk from equipment discarded at the International Space Station.

The cylindrical object that tore through the home in Naples on March 8 was subsequently taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral for analysis.

The space agency said it was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. The pallet was jettisoned from the space station in 2021, and the load was expected to eventually fully burn up on entry into Earth’s atmosphere, but one piece survived.

The chunk of metal weighed 1.6 pounds (0.7 kilograms) and was 4 inches (10 centimetres) tall and roughly 1 1/2 inches (4 centimetres) wide.

Homeowner Alejandro Otero told television station WINK at the time that he was on vacation when his son told him what had happened. Otero came home early to check on the house, finding the object had ripped through his ceiling and torn up the flooring.

“I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage,” Otero said. “I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt.”

A SpaceX rocket blasted off Thursday carrying the first all-European commercial crew to the International Space Station, a landmark mission for a region looking to mount a comeback following a series of setbacks.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket topped with its Crew Dragon capsule lifted off at 4:49 p.m. local time from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, according to a webcast of the mission managed by SpaceX and Axiom Space Inc.

The crew is expected to dock at the orbiting research laboratory, some 250 miles (402km) above Earth, at roughly 5:15 am New York time on January 20.

The Ax-3 mission is Axiom’s third crewed mission into low-Earth orbit. The Houston-based company is focused on developing private space stations.

Commanding Thursday’s flight is Michael López-Alegría, who led the Ax-1 mission in 2022, Axiom’s first mission to the ISS. Pilot Walter Villadei from the Italian Air Force and mission specialists Marcus Wandt of Sweden and Alper Gezeravci of Turkey will also participate in the two-week mission.

William Gerstenmaier, vice president of build and flight reliability at SpaceX, joked with the crew after the launch: “You’re demonstrating the ultimate in reuse: a reused commander, a reused Dragon, and a reused Falcon. Or maybe flight experience is a better word. Enjoy space!”

The launch comes as Europe’s space industry has struggled to get off the ground due to delays. The Ariane 6 rocket, which is four years behind schedule, is expected to blast off this summer, while the Vega-C rocket is set to lift off during the fourth quarter after a mission failure at the end of 2022.

“This year will look much better,” Josef Aschbacher, the director general of the European Space Agency, said last week at an annual press briefing.

India and the US on Friday said they have started talks to put in place a strategic framework for human space flight by year-end as they plan to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station in 2024.

US President Joe Biden also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 at the south polar region of the Moon and the success of the Aditya-L1 solar mission.

“Determined to deepen our partnership in outer space exploration, ISRO and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have commenced discussions on modalities, capacity building, and training for mounting a joint effort to the International Space Station in 2024, and are continuing efforts to finalise a strategic framework for human space flight cooperation by the end of 2023,” said a joint statement issued after the 52-minute talks between the two leaders.

During Modi’s visit to the US in June, Biden announced India and the US were collaborating to send an astronaut to the international space station in 2024.

On Friday evening, Biden drove to Modi’s official residence at the Lok Kalyan Marg soon after his arrival at the airport in New Delhi.

“India and the United States also intend to increase coordination on planetary defence to protect planet Earth and space assets from the impact of asteroids and near-Earth objects, including US support for India’s participation in asteroid detection and tracking via the Minor Planet Center,” the joint statement said.

“Having set a course to reach new frontiers across all sectors of space cooperation, the leaders welcomed efforts towards the establishment of a Working Group for commercial space collaboration under the existing India-U.S. Civil Space Joint Working Group,” the joint statement said.

It said the US reiterated its commitment to working together with India in the quantum domain, both bilaterally and through the Quantum Entanglement Exchange, a platform to facilitate international quantum exchange opportunities.

The two leaders welcomed the participation of S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences as a member of the Quantum Economic Development Consortium. It was also recognised that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay joined the Chicago Quantum Exchange as an international partner.

Sharing a vision of secure and trusted telecommunications, resilient supply chains, and global digital inclusion, Modi and Biden welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bharat 6G Alliance and Next G Alliance, operated by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, as a first step towards deepening public-private cooperation between vendors and operators.

They further acknowledged the setting up of two Joint Task Forces focused on collaboration in the field of Open RAN and research and development in 5G/6G technologies, the joint statement said.

“A 5G Open RAN pilot in a leading Indian telecom operator will be undertaken by a US Open RAN manufacturer before field deployment. The leaders continue to look forward to the participation of Indian companies in the U.S. Rip and Replace Program,” it said, adding that Biden also welcomed India’s support for a Rip and Replace pilot in the United States.

The two leaders hailed the signing of an Implementation Arrangement between the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Biotechnology to enable scientific and technological research collaborations in biotechnology and biomanufacturing innovations.

They welcomed the call for proposals released by NSF and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to foster academic and industrial collaboration in semiconductor research, next-generation communication systems, cyber-security, sustainability and green technologies, and intelligent transportation systems.

Reaffirming their commitment to building resilient technology value chains and linking defence industrial ecosystems, the leaders recommitted their administrations to promoting policies and adapting regulations that facilitate greater technology sharing, co-development, and co-production opportunities between Indian and U.S. industry, government and academic institutions.

They also welcomed continued engagement through an inter-agency monitoring mechanism under the auspices of the bilateral Strategic Trade Dialogue, launched in June 2023.

The two leaders welcomed the signing of an MoU between Indian universities, represented by the Council of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Council), and the Association of American Universities (AAU) to establish the India-U.S. Global Challenges Institute, with a combined initial commitment of at least $10 million.

The Global Challenges Institute will bring together leading research and higher education institutions from across the two nations, including beyond AAU and IIT membership, to advance new frontiers in science and technology, spanning collaboration in sustainable energy and agriculture, health and pandemic preparedness, semiconductor technology and manufacturing, advanced materials, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and quantum science, the statement said.

The leaders also welcomed the growing number of multi-institutional collaborative education partnerships, such as those between New York University-Tandon and IIT Kanpur Advanced Research Center, and the Joint Research Centers of the State University of New York at Buffalo and IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Jodhpur, and BHU, in the areas of critical and emerging technologies.

SpaceX crew returns to Earth after 6-month International Space Station mission

Four astronauts returned to Earth early Monday after a six-month stay at the International Space Station.

Their SpaceX capsule parachuted into the Atlantic off the Florida coast.

Returning were NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg, Russia’s Andrei Fedyaev and the United Arab Emirates’ Sultan al-Neyadi, the first person from the Arab world to spend an extended time in orbit.

Before departing the space station, they said they were craving hot showers, steaming cups of coffee and the ocean air since arriving in March. Their homecoming was delayed a day because of poor weather at the splashdown locations, but in the end, provided a spectacular middle-of-the-night show as the capsule streaked through the sky over Cape Canaveral toward a splashdown near Jacksonville.

The astronauts said it was incredible to be back. “You’ve got a roomful of happy people here,” SpaceX Mission Control radioed.

SpaceX launched their replacements over a week ago.

Another crew switch will occur later this month with the long-awaited homecoming of two Russians and one American who have been up there an entire year. Their stay was doubled after their Soyuz capsule leaked all of its coolant and a new craft had to be launched.

Between crew swaps, the space station is home to seven astronauts.

India and US to send astronaut to International Space Station in 2024: Biden and Modi announce

US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that India and the US will be collaborating to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station in 2024. The announcement came after a meeting between Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, where they discussed various areas of cooperation.

During the media address following their talks, Biden highlighted the extensive collaboration between the two countries in numerous fields, from advancing healthcare to space exploration.

“From designing new ways to diagnosing and treating new illnesses like cancer and diabetes to collaboration on human space flight, including on sending an Indian astronaut to the international space station in 2024…,” Biden said with Modi by his side.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed India’s commitment to space cooperation by announcing their decision to sign the Artemis Accords.

“We have decided to join the Artemis Accords. We have taken a giant leap in our space cooperation. In short, I would say even the sky is not the limit for cooperation with the US,” Modi said.

The Artemis Accords, based on the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, are a non-binding set of principles for civil space exploration in the 21st century. The American-led Accords aim to facilitate human missions to the Moon by 2025 and expand space exploration to destinations like Mars.

India is already working on its maiden human space flight project called Gaganyaan, which is scheduled to be launched into a low earth orbit by late 2024 or early 2025. However, the possibility of an Indian astronaut visiting the international space station could occur before the completion of the Gaganyaan mission.

In addition to space collaboration, the US and India are also joining forces in other areas. They are partnering to establish a semiconductor ecosystem that promotes diversification in the supply chain.

Several US companies, including Micron Technology and Applied Materials, are investing in semiconductor projects in India, aiming to create a semiconductor assembly and test facility and a semiconductor center for commercialization and innovation.

Furthermore, both countries are focusing on critical minerals and mineral security. The United States is set to support India’s membership in the Mineral Security Partnership, which aims to strengthen the supply chain of critical minerals.

India and the US have also collaborated on advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information science through a joint coordination mechanism. They have also signed agreements on wireless and quantum technologies. In telecommunications, they are working on 5G and 6G technologies, including Open Radio Access Network systems. The partnership involves field trials, deployments, and financial support. They are also focusing on people-to-people ties and higher education, particularly in STEM fields, through a university network and research partnerships.

SpaceX sends Saudi astronauts, including nation’s 1st woman in space, to International Space Station

Saudi Arabia’s first astronauts in decades rocketed toward the International Space Station on a chartered multimillion-dollar flight Sunday.

SpaceX launched the ticket-holding crew, led by a retired NASA astronaut now working for the company that arranged the trip from Kennedy Space Center. Also on board was a US businessman who now owns a sports car racing team.

The four should reach the space station in their capsule on Monday morning; they’ll spend just over a week there before returning home with a splashdown off the Florida coast.

Sponsored by the Saudi Arabian government, Rayyanah Barnawi, a stem cell researcher, became the first woman from the kingdom to go to space. She was joined by Ali al-Qarni, a fighter pilot with the Royal Saudi Air Force.

They’re the first from their country to ride a rocket since a Saudi prince launched aboard shuttle Discovery in 1985. In a quirk of timing, they’ll be greeted at the station by an astronaut from the United Arab Emirates.

“Hello from outer space! It feels amazing to be viewing Earth from this capsule,” Barnawi said after settling into orbit.

“As I look outside into space, I can’t help but think this is just the beginning of a great journey for all of us,” al-Qarni added.

Rounding out the visiting crew — Knoxville, Tennessee’s John Shoffner, former driver and owner of a sports car racing team that competes in Europe, and chaperone Peggy Whitson, the station’s first female commander who holds the US record for most accumulated time in space — 665 days and counting.

“It was a phenomenal ride,” Whitson said after reaching orbit. Her crewmates clapped their hands in joy.

It’s the second private flight to the space station organised by Houston-based Axiom Space. The first was last year by three businessmen, with another retired NASA astronaut. The company plans to start adding its own rooms to the station in another few years, eventually removing them to form a stand-alone outpost available for hire.

Axiom won’t say how much Shoffner and Saudi Arabia are paying for the planned 10-day mission. The company had previously cited a ticket price of $55 million each.

NASA’s latest price list shows per-person, per-day charges of $2,000 for food and up to $1,500 for sleeping bags and other gear. Need to get your stuff to the space station in advance? Figure roughly $10,000 per pound ($20,000 per kilogram), the same fee for trashing it afterward. Need your items back intact? Double the price.

The guests will have access to most of the station as they conduct experiments, photograph Earth and chat with schoolchildren back home, demonstrating how kites fly in space when attached to a fan.

After decades of shunning space tourism, NASA now embraces it with two private missions planned a year. The Russian Space Agency has been doing it, off and on, for decades.

“Our job is to expand what we do in low-Earth orbit across the globe,” said NASA’s space station program manager Joel Montalbano.

SpaceX’s first-stage booster landed back at Cape Canaveral eight minutes after liftoff — a special treat for the launch day crowd, which included about 60 Saudis. “It was a very, very exciting day,” said Axiom’s Matt Ondler.

NASA and SpaceX have postponed the launch of a crew of four, including two US astronauts, a Russian cosmonaut, and a United Arab Emirates crewmate, due to a technical glitch.

The crew was scheduled to lift off from Florida for the International Space Station on Monday, but a problem with the flow of ignition fluid used to start the spacecraft’s engines was identified just two and a half minutes before takeoff.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket topped with a Crew Dragon capsule will now launch on the first backup opportunity, set for early Tuesday, approximately 24 hours after the initial attempt. There is no word on when the rocket will be ready for a second attempt.

This mission, designated Crew 6, is expected to take the crew about 25 hours to reach the International Space Station, which is a laboratory orbiting approximately 250 miles (420 km) above Earth.

The mission will carry the sixth long-duration ISS team that NASA has flown aboard SpaceX since the company began sending American astronauts to orbit in May 2020.

Eleventh-hour launch scrubs are a common occurrence in human spaceflight, which is a highly complex and risky endeavor. Neither NASA nor SpaceX has released any further information on the technical issue that led to the delay.

International Space Station: Coolant leak at Russian spacecraft, crew safe

An uncrewed Russian supply ship docked at the International Space Station has lost coolant pressure, the Russian space corporation and NASA reported Saturday, saying the incident doesn’t pose any danger to the station’s crew.

Roscosmos said the hatch between the station and the Progress MS-21 had been locked so the loss of pressure didn’t affect the orbiting outpost.

”The temperature and pressure on board the station are within norms and there is no danger to health and safety of the crew it said in a statement.

The initial statement from Roscosmos left it unclear whether the entire cargo ship or just some of its systems lost pressure, but Sergei Krikalev, head of Roscosmos’ crewed programs, later clarified that there was depressurisation of the craft’s coolant loop.

NASA said its specialists are assisting their Russian counterparts in the troubleshooting of the coolant leak.

”Officials are monitoring all International Space Station systems and are not tracking any other issues,” NASA said. ”The crew, which was informed of the cooling loop leak, is in no danger and continuing with normal space station operations.” Roscosmos didn’t say what may have caused the cargo ship to lose pressure.

It noted that the cargo ship had already been loaded with waste prior to its scheduled disposal. The craft is set to be undocked from the station and deorbit to burn in the atmosphere on February 18.

The announcement came shortly after a new Russian cargo ship docked smoothly at the station on Saturday. The Progress MS-22 delivered almost three tons of food, water and fuel along with scientific equipment for the crew.

Roscosmos said that the incident didn’t affect the docking of the new cargo ship and ”will have no impact on the future station program.” The depressurisation of the cargo craft’s coolant loop follows a similar incident in December with the Soyuz crew capsule, which was hit by a tiny meteoroid that left a small hole in the exterior radiator and sent coolant spewing into space.

Russian Cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio were supposed to use the capsule to return to Earth in March, but Russian space officials decided that higher temperatures resulting from the coolant leak could make it dangerous to use.

They decided to launch a new Soyuz capsule on Feb. 20 so the crew have a lifeboat in the event of an emergency. But since it will travel in automatic mode to expedite the launch, a replacement crew will now have to wait until late summer or fall when another capsule is ready. It means that Prokopyev, Petelin and Rubio will have to stay several extra months at the station, possibly pushing their mission to close to a year.

NASA took part in all the discussions and agreed with the plan.

Besides Prokopyev, Petelin and Rubio, the space station is home to NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada; Russian Anna Kikina; and Japan’s Koichi Wakata. The four rode up on a SpaceX capsule last October.

Russia to quit the ISS by 2024 and build one of its own, says Roscosmos chief

Russia will opt out of the International Space Station (ISS) program after 2024, the new chief of Russia’s federal space agency Roscosmos has said. The decision comes at a time when the West has isolated Russia in terms of trade and finance over the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine.

The Roscosmos leadership had been threatening to pull out of the International Space Station for months raising concerns of the Western sanctions destroying the Russian cooperation aboard the orbital lab. The latest proclamation made by the new Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov underscores the space cooperation falling apart.

“The decision to leave the station after 2024 has been made,” said the current head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, according to space.com.

As per reports, Russia is looking into potential projects that can replace the ISS after 2024 and is currently working on extending the operation of the ISS past 2024. Earlier, the expiration date of the ISS was set for 2024, but it has now been shifted further.

“Of course, we will fulfil all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made,” said Borisov in the report.

Borisov replaced Dmitry Rogozin as the head of Roscosmos after the latter was personally removed by Vladimir Putin. Borisov is a former Deputy Prime Minister with a military background, who is known for his bombastic statements and eccentric nationalist behaviour.

Borisov called the decision to go solo and build Russia’s own space station as “raising the bar” in the space industry. He also mentioned that it is Russian space programme’s “main priority”.

Until now space exploration was one of the few areas where cooperation between Russia, the United States and its allies were not affected by the ongoing tensions over Ukraine and elsewhere. However, with this proclamation, the cooperation seems to be nearing its end.

The International Space Station is the largest modular space station currently placed in the lower Earth orbit. The ISS is a collaborative project involving five participating space agencies – NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).
