Govt forms interministerial committee to decide on Vistara’s international flying permit, says report

In a first, the centre has formed an interministerial committee of three Cabinet ministers to take a call if Tata-SIA joint venture Vistara should be given an international flying permit, Business Standard reported, citing sources.

Sources told the paper that the unprecedented decision of forming an interministerial committee was due to fears of witch-hunt by investigating agencies.

“There is a growing risk aversion among bureaucrats and hence, the need of delegating the decision to a joint committee to escape finger-pointing by anyone later,” sources were quoted as saying.

As per the Aircraft Rules of 1937, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has the final authority to grant the permit to airlines for flying overseas.

Iceland’s WOW Air to reduce fleet, cut 111 jobs

Icelandic low-cost carrier WOW Air, which is in talks with US private equity fund Indigo Partners about a potential investment, said on Thursday it would reduce its fleet to 11 aircraft from twenty and cut 111 jobs.

Indigo is managed by Bill Franke, the veteran US low-cost airline investor, and has also made investments in US-based Frontier Airlines, Mexico’s Volaris, Chilean carrier JetSmart and Hungary’s Wizz.

“After a challenging year, WOW air is now restructuring and simplifying its operations to return to its roots as a profitable ultra-low cost airline while discussions with Indigo Partners progress,” WOW Air said in a statement.

It said it was in negotiations with its lessors to return some of its aircraft including all Airbus A330s. Four Airbus A321s are being sold in a transaction that will improve its liquidity by more than $10 million, it said.

WOW Air will have around 1,000 employees after the job cuts, it said.

Indigo and WOW Air have not disclosed any details about their talks, but WOW Air has said that CEO and primary shareholder, Skuli Mogensen will remain a principal investor in WOW after the deal.

Icelandair last month scrapped its plan to buy the privately-held airline.

IndiGo launches four-day sale on fares for international flights, prices start at Rs 3,299

Budget carrier IndiGo has launched a four day sale offer on fares for its international network. The offer, which will be valid for travel between December 27 and April 15, can be availed till Sunday.

According to a press release issued by the carrier, it will offer all-inclusive fares starting at Rs 3,299 for a limited number of seats on international flights. The offer can be availed for flight bookings made through all channels during the offer period.

As per the release, the offer will be valid only on non-stop flights on various sectors across IndiGo’s international network and cannot be clubbed with any other offer, scheme, or promotion.

While the fares have been significantly cut down in the scheme, it will not include other expenses including airport charges and government taxes.  Further, the release said that the offer is not valid on IndiGo’s group bookings.

In addition, the offer is non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-encashable. Any changes in itinerary can be made by paying the applicable change fee and fare difference.

Jet Airways to introduce 65 new flights from December, offers 10-30% discount on end of year sale

India’s biggest full-service carrier, Jet Airways, will introduce 65 new weekly services effective December 2018 and has offered attractive discounts on flight tickets across airline’s network.

The airline added a daily direct frequency from Pune to Singapore and a third daily frequency from both its hubs, Mumbai and Delhi to Singapore, the release said.

From the capital, Jet Airways added an additional third service between New Delhi and Bangkok and a fourth frequency on the Delhi– Kathmandu route.

The airline also introduced a second frequency to Doha from New Delhi and Mumbai and has added a 7th new daily frequency between Mumbai and Dubai.

On the domestic front, from December 5, Jet Airways will introduce a fourth frequency between Delhi and Amritsar, and a direct daily service connecting Mumbai to the Holy city.

According to a press release of Jet Airways, the airline is offering discounts of up to 30 percent on their domestic and international routes. Bookings under the sale would open from December 5 to December 11, 2018.

“As part of the ‘Happy holidays year-end global sale’ offer, the airline will offer special discounts of up to 30 percent on base fare for return travel in Premiere and Economy cabin from France to India on flights operated by Jet Airways/codeshare partners with Air France and Royal Dutch Airlines,” the airline said.

Similarly, discounts of up to 30 percent is also extended on routes from Singapore to India, Gulf, SAARC, Amsterdam, London, Manchester and Paris.

For passengers travelling in to India from Hong Kong, SAARC, Gulf, Amsterdam, London, Manchester and Paris a special discount up to 25 percent on base fares for return travel in Premiere and Economy is on offer.

Wow Air offers New Delhi-US fares at Rs 13,499. Here is what you might actually end up paying

Icelandic low-cost carrier Wow Air is offering air tickets to the US, Canada and Europe from New Delhi for as low as Rs 13,499.

Wow Air will start its service with three weekly flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi on December 7, 2018, connecting passengers to North America and Europe through its hub in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Founder Skúli Mogensen said the market is massive and 20 percent of all foreign students in the US come from India. And while Iceland is not on the way from Europe to India, he told travel intelligence company Skift that some Europeans still will transfer in Iceland to save money.

Typically, a one-way ticket to the US costs Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. Wow is offering fares at one-fifth that price. So will the Wow Air flight be that cheap? It depends on how frugal a traveller you are willing to be.

CNBC-TV18 visited the Wow Air website and checked the fare to Los Angeles. For a one-way ticket from New Delhi to Los Angeles, the following are the specifics.

• Date of journey: December 7, 2018
• Class: Economy (Wow basic)
• Ticket price: Rs 23,999 (Includes personal item)
• Checked baggage: Rs 4,699
• Carry-on bag: Rs 3,599
• Meal: Rs 799
• Total cost: Rs 33,096

The bottom line is that the ticket prices look very attractive but once you start adding extras, the cost of the ticket increases. But you might still get a cheaper fare than most airlines flying these routes.

To begin with, Wow air will operate three weekly flights connecting passengers to North America and Europe over their hub in Reykjavik and from January, the frequency would be increased to five weekly flights.

WOW Air offers flight tickets from India to US at a price as low as Rs 13,499

Icelandic low-cost carrier WOW Air is giving an opportunity to the passengers to travel from New Delhi to Iceland, the US and Canada at a price as low as Rs 13,499.

The offer is valid from September 18 to September 24 and valid for travel between December 2018 and March 2019, the airline said in a statement.

WOW Air will start its service with three weekly flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi on December 7, 2018, connecting passengers to North America and Europe over their hub in Reykjavik, Iceland.

For Rs 13,499, a person can visit destinations like Chicago, Orlando, Newark, Detroit, San Francisco, Baltimore, Boston, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Washington DC, St Louis in the US; Toronto and  Montreal in Canada and Reykjavik in Iceland, the airline said.

“We are thrilled to begin our operations from New Delhi in December, said Skúli Mogensen, chief executive officer and founder of WOW Air. We thank the Indian consumers for their response and I am very happy with the feedback and demand we have received.”

Vistara to start flights to Colombo and Phuket from October, says report

Singapore Airlines and Tata Group joint venture Vistara is ready to fly international routes from October, Financial Express reported.

The airline’s international flight will be from New Delhi to Colombo in Sri Lanka and from New Delhi to Phuket in Thailand, the report said citing unidentified sources.

An airline is required to have 20 aircraft for domestic operations to be eligible to fly international, according to the new policy. The airline received its 20th aircraft in April and currently has a 22-aircraft fleet.

Vistara wanted to fly to Dubai, however, the quota under the India-Dubai bilateral is full, sources told the paper.  At present, only Air India and Sri Lankan Airlines operate in the New Delhi-Colombo route.
