BCCI suspends Hardik Pandya from the first match of next IPL season; here’s why

BCCI has suspended Hardik Pandya from the first match of the next IPL season along with a fine of RS 30 lakh. In the Mumbai Indians’s last game against Lucknow Super Giants, skipper Hardik Pandya was fined due to maintaining a slow over rate.

All MI players including ‘Impact player’ Rohit Sharma were fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever is lower. “As it was his team’s third offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Pandya was fined Rs. 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next match,” the IPL statement read.

“The rest of the members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either Rs.12 lakh or 50 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser”, the statement added.

Rohit Sharma saved his best for the last but that wasn’t enough to stop another woeful chapter being added to Mumbai Indians’ already nightmare of an IPL season, which ended in a last-place finish following a disappointing 18-run defeat to LSG on Friday.

After Rohit smacked his way to a 38-ball 68 to set a strong platform in pursuit of 215, Mumbai’s batters failed to keep the momentum going in the middle overs and finished at 196 for six in 20 overs to hand LSG a much-needed win.

LSG, who needed a victory over MI and other results over the weekend to go their way to make an improbable entry into the playoffs, reached the sixth spot but their net run rate only improved marginally to -0.667.

Apart from Rohit’s brilliance at the top, the young Naman Dhir gave a fine exhibition of his talent with a half-century but it came when all was lost and there was no pressure on him.

Dhir struck five sixes and four fours in a late assault which only reduced the margin of defeat for his side to a large extent. This season, in all likelihood, marks the end of Rohit’s 14-year journey with Mumbai Indians. It would also be interesting to see if the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah agree on retention or go back to the auction pool.

Additionally, the move to bring in Hardik as skipper at the expense of a five-time champion captain Rohit proved to be a harakiri during a season where the new man only received boos wherever he went. Even on Friday, as Rohit’s most entertaining knock of the season ended, the Wankhede crowd was ready to give their ‘skipper’ a standing ovation which turned into incessant hooting the moment the designated skipper entered the turf.

Before a short rain-forced interruption, Rohit hit Matt Henry for two sixes on the trot to make intentions clear and when the play resumed, he went after Mohsin Khan to hit two consecutive fours.

The shot of the innings, however, was when Rohit danced down the track to hit Mohsin over his head to bang the sight screen and bring up his fifty. Rohit’s innings eventually ended on 68 with 10 fours and three sixes one that was punctuated with regular chants of Rohit Rohit’ and a standing ovation when he trudged back to the pavilion.

SRH vs GT, IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified for the Indian Premier League play-offs after rain washed out their IPL match against Gujarat Titans here without a ball being bowled. SRH thus became the third team to cut following Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, who are currently occupying the top two places in the standings.

The Sunrisers received one point to take their tally to 15 points with one match to go. They will face Punjab Kings, who have already been eliminated, on May 19 in their last league assignment. GT, last year’s runners-up and 2022 champions, were knocked out of the play-off race after their previous match was also abandoned due to rain. They thus end the season with 12 points from 14 matches. The toss didn’t happen at the scheduled time of 7 pm due to rain and a wet outfield. The Impact Player rule has become a talking point in IPL 2024 season and has two camps one supporting the rule and another calling it detrimental for all-rounders. After seeing  36 games where 200 plus runs scored in a single inning this season, Delhi Capitals head coach and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels that high-scoring games will continue to be a norm in the IPL even if the much-debated ‘Impact Player’ rule is discontinued.

The Impact player rule allows teams to replace one of the original XI announced at the toss at any point during the match. India captain Rohit Sharma calls it detrimental for all-rounders as they don’t get a chance to bowl, while others like Sourav Ganguly describe it as a good innovation.

“There is a talk if the impact player remains in the IPL if it doesn’t, will the scores come down again? I am interested to see that. I am not sure they will. Yes, the impact player does provide a bit of cushion for the guys at the top but I think the guys at the top are so used to going out and playing a certain way”, said Ponting.

This year, the 200 mark has been breached 36 times so far in the IPL, compared to the overall count of 37 in the previous edition. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has stated that the rule can be reconsidered if that’s what the stakeholders would like at the end of the IPL.

Talking about the game’s evolution in the last decade, Ponting said the space for batters with “classical technique” is shrinking. Ponting said Indian superstar Virat Kohli and Englishman Joe Root are among the few top batters with a classical technique.

” In the last 10 years there is not a lot of classical technique in the modern day batters, you look at the absolute best now, Joe Root is probably the most classical one,” “Stephen Smith, what he has done over the years has been a little bit different, Marnus Labuschagne has been a bit different with the way he plays, Virat is classically, technically excellent- as well, but I think there is a bit of a shift,” he said.

India star pacer Mohammed Shami called out businessman and Lucknow Super Giants team owner Sanjiv Goenka’s behaviour towards team captain KL Rahul. Goenka’s animated chat purportedly reprimanding Rahul after Lucknow Super Giants’ record demolition at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 9 went viral and netizens came out in huge numbers in support of the LSG captain.

Rahul was part of India’s playing XI in the ICC ODI World Cup and his form was celebrated as he came out of a six- month thigh injury. Shami was the first Indian cricketer to criticise the act on a LIVE chat. “Crores of people are watching you and learning from you. KL Rahul’s future as LSG skipper looks uncertain as the 32-year-old has been being at the receiving end of the 10-wicket losst to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday. As per a PTI report, it is a foregone conclusion that the LSG skipper, who was roped in before the auction in 2022 for a record Rs 17 crore, is unlikely to be retained before the mega auctions in 2025.
