After their loss to Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings need to tighten up to keep their hopes alive for the IPL 2024 playoffs. CSK has two more matches ahead – one on Sunday against Rajasthan Royals and the second against RCB. Both the matches are high-voltage games and the results will determine the final contenders of IPL 2024.

KKR and RR are at the top of the points table with 16 points each. SRH has also caught up in the race to the plaoffs with some incredible home wins.

Can CSK qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs?

CSK have suffered two successive defeats and are currently fourth in the standings with 12 points. They need to win their next two games and only then can they qualify with 16 points. In the coming two games they can’t afford to have any more slip-ups with net run rate, as RCB can have an upper hand on run rate if they win their next two games.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said the defending champions were undone by the “high caliber” batting effort of Gujarat Titans’ openers skipper Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan during their 35-run defeat.

“It was a good onslaught and the batting was of the highest caliber. Right from the first over they disrupted our plans. It wasn’t till the latter stages we got some control,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference on Friday night.

“We didn’t execute as well as we could but the other part was the sublime batting from two very good players.” The former New Zealand captain praised Sudharsan for his effort. “In the final last year, he (Sudharsan) played beautifully, he got 96. I have watched him closely, he has got good connections around the Chennai area. He is a wonderful player and today he proved that.”

Gill (104 off 55b) and Sudharsan (103 off 51b) notched up destructive centuries in an opening stand of 210 runs to propel GT to 231/3 and then restricted the defending champions to 196/8 to stay alive in the playoff race.

However, the Chennai bowlers are expected to buckle up and do well in this fixture at home against Rajasthan, which is their strong area. The low amount of dew in this afternoon clash might help CSK spinners.

Shikhar Dhawan has struggled to get back into form in IPL 2024 and now the senior batter will have to watch matches from the bench as per latest reports.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) assistant coach Brad Haddin has said that the skipper will not play in their next clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as he has sustained a shoulder injury.

According to Haddin, Dhawan was about to return to the playing XI for the match against defending champions Chennai Super Kings, but failed to do so.

“In any team that you are a part of, it’s disappointing to leave your most senior players for extended periods. I do not have to sit here and tell you about Shikhar’s record in IPL. He’s the most successful opener in this tournament,” Brad Haddin explained.

“We go to Delhi after this game for a couple of days before we go to our next game in Guwahati. Shikhar will be assessed and then hopefully we can have some more positive news on him for the last couple of games. We will assess him when we get to Delhi. Fingers crossed,” he was quoyted as saying.

Punjab Kings will play their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture on , Thursday (May 9) at 7.30 pm IST.

PBKS lost their previous match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their last game, whereas RCB beat Gujarat Titans (GT) by four wickets at home. Both of them are placed on eight points each and still have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

The average innings score in T20Is on this ground is 137, however, a fairly higher-scoring encounter could be on the cards on Thursday.

GT lost to the Delhi Capitals (DC) by four runs in their previous match, digging deep to successfully round off the chase of 225. RCB bagged their second win of the season as they defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 35 runs in their previous clash.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kick-started their IPL 2024 campaign in style as they beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 6 wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Batting first RCB managed 173/6 in 20 overs on the back of Anuj Rawat’s 48. Mustafizur Rahman picked 4 wickets for the five-time champions. In response, CSK reached the target in 18.4 overs. The run-chase was powered by CSK debutant Rachin Ravindra who scored a quickfire 37. Lower down the batting order Shivam Dube hit unbeaten 34.

The win takes CSK at the top of the points table.

On International Women’s Day, the KPH Dream Cricket Limited via the Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings announced their partnership with Shikhar Dhawan Foundation & M3M Foundation to support girl child education and skills. As part of the partnership, the Punjab Kings will help in amplifying the initiative with implementation partners Shikhar Dhawan Foundation (SDF), in collaboration with Funding partner M3M Foundation.

In an innovative scholarship, the M3M Foundation with its implementing partner Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, will commit support to one girl child for her vocational education for every 25 runs scored or 3 wickets taken by Punjab Kings during their home games. Through the initiative, the organisation will offer vocational education support to 111 girls for up to Rs. 5 Lakhs, covering a total amount of Rs. 5.55 crore over the next five years.

The scholarship would be used towards funding the education of deserving girls from economically disadvantaged homes for their higher vocational training to make them independent financially and to shape their future. The funds will be provided to the girls from the undergraduate level till they finish graduating and will be agnostic to their education choice.

SRH names Pat Cummins as captain for IPL 2024

: Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins will lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchise announced on Monday. The 30-year-old pacer was bought by SRH for a whopping Rs 20.50 crore in the IPL auctions in December last year, making him the second costliest player in the event’s history.

Cummins replaced South African Aiden Markram, who led SRH in the 2023 season. “Our new captain Pat Cummins,” the SRH said on social media platforms, along with a picture of Cummins.

Cummins has earlier played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will be facing Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match of the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League.  The season will get underway on March 22 at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Last year CSK defeated Gujarat Titans in the final to lift their fifth IPL title and go level with Mumbai Indians as the most successful teams in the league’s history.
