During the activation, the Su-30 and Hawk fighters successfully carried out overshoots, while An-32 and Dornier transport aircraft landed and subsequently took off from the strip.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday activated an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) airstrip on National Highway 16 near Addanki in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district. The IAF  conducted the activation on Monday, March 18, said an official.

It showcased the ‘high level of synergy and liaison’ between civil agencies like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), district administration, state police and the Indian Air Force towards the conduct of complex multifaceted activities.

The 4.1 km long and 33-m wide concrete airstrip was constructed by the NHAI based on specifications provided by the IAF.

The Emergency Landing Facility airstrips enhance the flexibility of air operations during contingencies and are invaluable assets during humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in far-flung areas, read an official statement.

The ELF in Andhra Pradesh has been recently operationalised in peninsular India, while other airstrips in different parts of the country are already operational.

During the activation, the Su-30 and Hawk fighters successfully carried out overshoots, while An-32 and Dornier transport aircraft landed and subsequently took off from the strip, the statement added.

Sharing multiple videos of the activation, PRO Shillong under the Ministry of Defence, wrote on X, “Elevating preparedness, inspiring excellence! On 18 March 2024, @IAF_MCC fighter & transport aircraft carried out operations on an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) airstrip on National Highway 16 near Addanki in Bapatla district.”

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has signed an agreement with the Indian Air Force to integrate futuristic weapons and sensors into light combat aircraft Tejas. The ADA is a premier organisation that operates under the administrative control department of Defence Research and Development with a mandate to take forward the Tejas aircraft programme.

In the present war scenario, there is a continuous need for upgrading the weapons and sensors suite of the aircraft, the defence ministry said. Towards this, ADA has initiated the know-how transfer for integration of weapons and sensors to the Software Development Institute (SDI), it said.

“This will facilitate the IAF to independently carry out sensors, weapon integration and flight testing to enhance the operational capability of Tejas-LCA fighter,” the ministry said in a statement. “The ADA has successfully developed and type-certified Tejas LCA with a credit of more than 10,000 sorties of incident-free flying,” it said.

The IAF has already formed two squadrons of this fighter aircraft and twin-seater aircraft are also being inducted.

‘This college is not for you’: What India’s first female firefighter had to hear

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

While speaking at CNBC-TV18’s ‘Future Female Forward – Season 2’ event, Kanhekar recalled being the only girl in her college.

Harshini Kanhekar, India’s first female firefighter, broke gender stereotypes and blazed a trail in a male-dominated sector. Her incredible journey inspires one and all, defying prejudices and demonstrating that dedication transcends gender in any industry.

It was not a cakewalk for Kanhekar as she had to deal with many challenges in her journey to be the country’s first female firefighter.

While speaking at CNBC-TV18’s ‘Future Female Forward – Season 2’ event, Kanhekar recalled being the only girl in her college.

“So, my father and I went to National Fire Service College in 2002. I went there, showed them the form, and one of the persons there told me, ‘Madam, this college is not for you; please go somewhere else.’ I said sir, it is written that they want a B.Sc. graduate, and I have the degree… I am very thankful to that man (as) I made it in my mind that now I will come to this college and show them. I was alone among around 200 male candidates in the college… Many people used to ask me, ‘Harshini, you must be feeling odd?’ I used to say, ‘No. They must be feeling odd’,” Kanhekar said.

After completing the course, Kanhekar was picked from campus by ONGC. She became the Deputy manager of Fire Services at ONGC (Mumbai).

Kanhekar also shared how she got inspired by former Indian Air Force pilot Captain Shivani Kulkarni.

“I am feeling proud that my inspiration is sitting next to me here today. We are from the same unit. One day, I read her interview wherein she said that we must have Physics, Chemistry and Maths to join the Indian Army‘s flying branch. So, following her advice, I chose these subjects,” Kanhekar said, adding that she was not selected for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army.

Later on, she was advised by a friend to join the Fire Services to fulfil her “passion for wearing uniform and serving the nation”.

Kulkarni was the first female pilot from Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region to join the Indian Air Force. She participated in the Kargil War as a transport pilot flying Antonov AN32 transport aircraft for9 the Air Force. In 2015, she joined IndiGo and is currently passes Airbus 320.

Supreme Court seeks Army, IAF reply in contempt plea over non-payment of ₹1.6 crore compensation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Supreme Court on Monday was hearing a plea by a veteran officwr seeking contempt proceedings against the Air Force and Army for failing to comply with the September 2023 order of the apex court.

The Supreme Court on Monday sought a reply from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army in a contempt plea filed by a veteran over non-payment of ₹1.6 crore compensation for medical negligence. The petitioner had contracted HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) during a blood transfusion at a military hospital.

The notice was issued by a Bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, seeking a reply in four weeks, Bar and Bench reported.

While hearing the matter in September last year, the apex court directed the Air Force to pay around ₹1.6 crore in compensation to the affected officer.

In September 2023, a bench of the apex court had slammed the Air Force and Army over their conduct and held them vicariously liable, both jointly and severally, the report added.

The veteran officer had moved the SC against a verdict of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), which dismissed his petition seeking ₹95.31 crore in compensation for medical negligence.

On Monday, the Supreme Court heard the plea by the petitioner seeking contempt proceedings against the Air Force and Army for failing to implement the September 2023 order of the apex court.

In the plea, the veteran alleged that he has not received the amount, including litigation expenses, so far.

While appearing for the Air Force and the Army, Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee argued that a review petition had been filed against the September 2023 order of the court. He requested that the case should be deferred till the outcome of the review petition.

However, the division bench of the Supreme Court declined the request.

While hearing the matter, Justice Gavai said, “No, no. Union is always at liberty to move the court for expeditious disposal of review application before the returnable date”.

According to the Bar and Bench report, the matter took place during Operation Parakram in 2002, when the officer fell sick and was admitted to 171 Military Hospital in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba. At the hospital, one unit of blood was given to him.

Later, the officer got to know in 2014 that he had been diagnosed with HIV infection. He then sought information regarding the Personal Occurrence Report (POR) related to his hospitalisation in 2002. Medical boards were convened and it was revealed that his condition was linked to the blood transfusion.

The officer was then denied an extension and was discharged from service in May 2016, while his application for a disability certificate was also denied.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In view of the air show, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced that two runways will remain closed from 12 pm to 1 pm for three days, from January 12-14.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday kickstarted the air show over the Marine Drive in Mumbai as part of its mega outreach programme to create awareness and promote a deeper connection with the local community.

The air show, being held in collaboration with the Maharashtra state government, will continue till Sunday (January 14).

“The city of Mumbai is slated to witness a spectacular aerial display on 14 January 2024. The Indian Air Force will enthrall the city with a multi-faceted air display by its elite Suryakiran fixed wing and Sarang helicopter aerobatic display teams over the iconic Marine Drive,” the South Western Air Command said in a post on social media site X.

It stated that the ‘Akashganga’ skydiving team of the Indian Air Force will perform a scintillating display at Chowpathy Beach on Saturday. The IAF will also have flypasts by other fighter aircraft and helicopters.

The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, which was established in 1996, has been designated as a brand ambassador for the IAF and is a part of the 52nd Squadron. It includes 13 pilots and operates Hawk MK 132 aircraft, PTI reported.

Because of the air show, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced that two runways will remain closed from 12 pm to 1 pm for three days, from January 12-14.

“The Indian Air Force has planned an Aerial Display exercise at Mumbai. Due to this, Mumbai’s CSMIA runways (RWY 09/27 & 14/32) will remain non-operational from 12:00 hrs. to 13:00 hrs on 12th, 13th and 14th January, 2024. Passengers are urged to verify their scheduled flights with their respective airlines before heading to the airport during these days,” CSMIA stated.

The Mumbai Traffic Police also issued a travel advisory for the air show in the city, stating that these restrictions will be in effect from 9 am to 5 pm on January 13 and 14.

Check details of the restrictions and the alternate routes:

Indian Air Force An-32 aircraft that went missing in 2016 found after 8 years

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The said transport aircraft was reported missing over the Bay of Bengal on July 22, 2016, with 29 personnel on board. The aircraft took off on a routine weekly courier flight from Tambaram Air Force Station in Chennai in the morning and was scheduled to arrive at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

After nearly 8 years of its disappearance, the debris of the Indian Air Force An-32 aircraft (registration K-2743) has been discovered, the Ministry of Defence announced on Friday, January 12.

“Despite large-scale Search and Rescue operations by aircraft and ships, no missing personnel or aircraft debris could be located. The National Institute of Ocean Technology, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, recently deployed an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) with deep-sea exploration capability at the last known location of the missing An-32,” a release from the Ministry of Defence stated.

“This search was conducted at a depth of 3400 m using multiple payloads, including a multi-beam SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging), synthetic aperture SONAR, and high-resolution photography. Analysis of search images indicated the presence of debris from a crashed aircraft on the seafloor approximately 140 nautical miles (approx. 310 km) from the Chennai coast, it added.

“The search images were scrutinised and found to be consistent with an An-32 aircraft. This discovery at the probable crash site, with no other recorded history of any other missing aircraft report in the same area, points to the debris possibly belonging to the crashed IAF An-32 (K-2743),” the release informed.

The massive search operations launched back in 2016 involved the Indian Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard in locating the missing aircraft. The Air Force deployed three aircraft, including a C-130J Super Hercules, and four ships, while the Navy deployed several vessels into service. INS Karmukh, Gharial, Jyoti, Kuthar, Sahyadri, Rajput, Ranvijay, Kamorta, Kirch, etc., scanned the aircraft’s flight route.

According to media reports, the air traffic controllers lost radar contact with the AN-32, which plunged from approximately 23,000 feet, approximately 280 km out at sea from Chennai. The then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was personally monitoring the situation at that time.

The massive Search and Rescue (SAR) operations launched back then are considered the biggest ever in the history of the IAF.

Watch | IAF’s Super Hercules makes a night landing at Kargil airstrip

Indian Air Force (IAF) recently carried out a night landing at Kargil airstrip on its C-130J aircraft, which is also called the Super Hercules. Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the IAF said the exercise also helped in a training mission of the Garuds. The Garud Commando Force is the special forces unit of the IAF.

Here is a look at the special landing:

IAF pilots had earlier shown daredevilry in the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue mission using the same aircraft.

The IAF successfully landed two Super Hercules aircraft on a primitive and challenging airstrip in Uttarakhand. This critical mission, conducted amid adverse weather conditions, aimed to transport heavy engineering equipment for the rescue of 41 workers trapped inside the under-construction mountain tunnel.

Last year, the IAF also used this aircraft for a daring nocturnal mission in Sudan. The IAF manoeuvred its C-130J Super Hercules onto an unprepared runway amidst darkness to evacuate 121 individuals from a small airstrip in conflict-ridden Sudan.

The airstrip in Wadi Sayyidna presented a challenging scenario as it lacked navigational approach aids, fuel, and landing lights essential for guiding aircraft during nighttime landings. However, the IAF executed a flawless landing, using Night Vision Goggles (NVGs).

IAF succesfully tests Akash missiles against four aerial targets simultaneously

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

DRDO announced on December 18 that the Indian Air Force successfully tested the Akash Weapon System, engaging four aerial targets simultaneously at a 25 km range.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced on Monday, December 18, that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully conducted a test wherein four medium-range surface-to-air missiles successfully hit four aerial targets at a range of 25 kilometres. IAF conducted the test using the Akash Weapon System.

The Akash Weapon System, designed and developed by DRDO, is produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and other associated industries. DRDO said the test showcases the system’s capability for command-guided engagement of multiple targets using a single firing unit.

DRDO said the successful test marks a significant milestone for India, solidifying its position as the first country to exhibit such advanced capabilities in engaging multiple aerial targets simultaneously at a 25 km range. The Akash Weapon System was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2019.
