Summary

‘Bhasma Aarti’ was being performed at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on the occasion of Holi. The incident occurred when Holi celebrations were underway.

At least 13 people were injured in a fire at Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday, March 25 morning.

‘Bhasma Aarti’ was being performed at the temple on the occasion of Holi.

The incident occurred when Holi celebrations were underway.

“Fourteen priests suffered burn injuries. Some are being treated in the district hospital here, while eight have sought treatment in Indore. A magisterial probe has been ordered. It will be conducted by Zila Panchayat CEO Mrinal Meena and Additional Collector Anukool Jain and a report will be submitted in three days,” Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh told PTI.

“The fire started as ‘gulal’ (coloured powder used during rituals) fell on the puja thali that contained burning ‘kapoor’ (camphor). It later spread on the floor and turned into a blaze,” he said. The incident has been captured by CCTV cameras installed in the temple, an official said.

Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav announced that those injured would receive financial aid of 1 lakh each along with access to top-notch medical care at no cost. Furthermore, the CM pledged that the administration would exert every possible effort to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The incident that happened in Mahakal temple of Ujjain is very painful. I wish for the speedy recovery of all the devotees injured in this incident. The local administration is engaged in every possible help to the victims under the supervision of the state government.”

Holi 2024: Tips to protect your hair and skin during colourful festivities

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

To ensure that these chemicals do not wreak havoc on your skin, take these pre-Holi precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.

With the festival of colours approaching soon, most of us are beaming with joy and have started preparing to immerse ourselves in the colourful festivities. However, amid the fun, we tend to forget the negative impact the chemicals used in colours can have on our skin. To ensure that these chemicals do not wreak havoc on your skin, take these pre-Holi precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.

Hydration is the key

First and foremost, keep sipping water throughout the day; it is the most crucial step towards your skin and hair care journey. Before, during and post- Holi, drink plenty of water to keep your skin and hair healthy as it flushes out toxins from the colours. This keeps you going without any consequences of colours on your health.

Keep applying moisturiser and sunscreen

Make it a practice to keep your skin prepped with moisturiser and sunscreen. Since Holi colours can dry out your skin, apply a generous layer of moisturiser followed by sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30. Pay extra attention to your neck, arms and face as they are exposed. Since the celebration generally takes outdoors, it is important to shield your skin and nothing works well than sunscreen and moisturiser.

Oil up to fight every challenge

Before going out to play Holi with your loved ones, do not forget to add a protective barrier to your skin and hair. All you need to do is apply coconut oil, or almond oil to your scalp and body. Since oil acts as a natural resistance to colour on skin and hair, it makes it easier for people to remove colours later. Meanwhile, do not forget to apply another layer of oil before washing your hair to nourish your scalp and wash the remaining colour.

Choose natural colours

If possible, use natural colours, herbal colours to be specific, as they are made from flowers, vegetables, and other organic materials. These colours are less likely to cause skin allergies or irritation.

Post-Holi hair care is a must

Pamper yourself to some extra care post-Holi by using a hair mask or deep conditioning. Treating your hair to some extra care routine post-Holi will help restore moisture and nourishment. Opt for a hot oil massage to rejuvenate the scalp and hair.

Summary

The country will always be indebted to the soldiers for their devotion and service, the minister said. ”You are doing divine work. You are ready to fire at the enemy and take a bullet to your chest and it is due to this that the people of the country can celebrate Holi peacefully,” he said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday celebrated Holi with Army jawans in Leh and lauded them for protecting the country from enemies while braving extreme weather conditions. Singh was earlier supposed to go to Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield, but his visit was cancelled due to inclement weather. The minister was accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande.

The defence minister applied tilak with ’gulal’ on soldiers’ foreheads. Addressing the soldiers after celebrating the festival of colours, Singh said Ladakh is the national capital of courage and bravery.

”Like we have the national capital in Delhi, the economic capital in Mumbai, and the technological capital in Bengaluru, similarly Ladakh is India’s capital of courage and bravery. ”When everyone wants to hide in their homes due to extreme weather conditions, you stand up to protect the country from its enemies with unwavering willpower,” he said.

The country will always be indebted to the soldiers for their devotion and service, the minister said. ”You are doing divine work. You are ready to fire at the enemy and take a bullet to your chest and it is due to this that the people of the country can celebrate Holi peacefully,” he said.

”I feel that all of you, while protecting us from the enemies, are no less than protector gods for us,” he told the soldiers. Singh reiterated the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government’s commitment to the welfare of the armed forces and their families.

”It is our duty to take care of you, your children and parents. Our government is always working for the forces of the country with the same zeal with which you are working for this country,” he said. When he took over as the defence minister five years ago, Singh said, he visited Siachen first.

”Today, it was not possible to go to Siachen due to bad weather. Therefore, I wish a happy Holi to all soldiers deployed there,” he said, adding that playing Holi with jawans is one of the happiest moments for him. ”We all know that there is a tradition in our country that whenever there is any auspicious occasion, we start it by worshipping our beloved God. Even when we have a feast, it is offered to God first.

”The first lamp of Diwali, the first colour of Holi, all this should be in the name of our protectors, our soldiers. Festivals should first be celebrated at the peaks of Siachen and Kargil, on sandy plains of Rajasthan and with the Navy personnel aboard the submarine in the depths of the Indian Ocean,” the defence minister said.

Summary

A day ahead of the Holi is celebrated Holika Dahan which marks the onset of colourful festivities.

Holi, the festival of colours, marks the arrival of the spring. The festival is all things colourful. A day ahead of the Holi, people observe Holika Dahan, which marks the onset of colourful festivities. This year, Holika Dahan is slated to be celebrated on March 24.

According to astrologer Pandit Manohar Acharya, this year’s Holika Dahan will take place at night on March 24. Explaining the right time for performing Holika Dahan, he says that it will start after 10:35 pm on March 24. Bhadra Kaal is scheduled to begin from morning to 10:35 pm on the same day. During this time, it is prohibited to perform any kind of auspicious work or even worship god.

Holika Dahan: Significance

The festival primarily commemorates the burning of the evil Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, who attempted to burn her nephew Prahlad in a bonfire. Holika was immune from fire. Despite this, she was the one who was immolated and not Prahlad. This marks the triumph of good over evil and the victory of devotion over wickedness.

Holika Dahan: History

Holika Dahan is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. It is believed to be centred around the story of demon king Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad. Hiranyakashyap, a tyrant, believed himself to be the most powerful being in the universe and wanted everyone to worship him. Conversely, Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. This enraged the king who, out of angst, decided to kill his son with the help of his sister, Holika. She, in an attempt to kill Prahlad, tricked him into sitting on a pyre with her, hoping that he would die.

Spring Splendor: Songkran, Holi, and more — 5 distinctive festivals celebrated worldwide

Songkran (Thailand): Songkran stands as a vibrant celebration heralding the arrival of the Thai New Year, observed from April 13 to 15, just after the spring equinox. This exuberant festivity, also embraced in Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, derives its name from Sanskrit, meaning “passage of the sun.” Central to the festivities is water, symbolising the cleansing of misfortune from the past year. Holi (India): Holi, the Festival of Colors, joyfully announces the advent of spring following a prolonged winter. Beyond its colorful splendor, Holi embodies the triumph of good over evil and heralds the onset of a bountiful spring harvest. Preceding the main event, Holika Dahan commemorates the demise of Holika, symbolising the victory of righteousness. (Image: Shutterstock)
Cimburijada (Bosnia): Nestled in Zenica, Bosnia, Cimburijada, aptly dubbed the Festival of Scrambled Eggs, commemorates the seasonal shift to spring. At the break of dawn along the Bosna riverbanks, communities converge to prepare and share a communal feast of scrambled eggs, fostering bonds among friends, families, and visitors alike. Baba Marta (Bulgaria): Baba Marta, observed on March 1, unfurls a tradition where individuals exchange Martenitsi—a token of adornment often in the form of wristbands, yarn dolls, or tassels. Crafted from intertwining red and white threads, these Martenitsi adornments grace individuals throughout March, symbolising the imminent arrival of spring, ushering in warmer days and prosperity. Drowning Marzanna (Poland): In Poland, the onset of spring is marked with a distinctive ritual known as Drowning Marzanna. Marzanna, personifying death and winter in Slavic folklore, is bid farewell on the first day of spring, typically around March 21. An effigy of Marzanna, typically fashioned from straw, is ceremonially burned and submerged in a river, signifying the end of winter’s grip and the blossoming of spring’s renewal. (Image: Reuters)
