Summary

Amid the war in Israel, US president Joe Biden said that the US will make sure that Israel has the help its citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves.

The United States has offered “rock solid and unwavering” support to Israel, where Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a wave of rocket attacks on October 7, killing hundreds of civilians.

The United States stands with the people of Israel…This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage. My Administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering,” US president Joe Biden said in a series of posts on microblogging platform X.

“In this moment of tragedy, I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have their back,” he said.

Biden added that the US will make sure that Israel has the help its citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves.

Earlier in the day, the US president had posted that the world was seeing appalling images. “Thousands of rockets raining down on Israeli cities. Hamas terrorists killing not only Israeli soldiers, but civilians on the streets and in their homes. It’s unconscionable. Israel has a right to defend itself – full stop.”

Meanwhile, Israel has already responded with a wave of air strikes on Gaza, killing more than 230 people, media reports quoted officials as saying.

According to a senior administration official cited by PTI, Biden has received a full briefing on the situation and developments in Israel and he has directed full engagement with Israeli counterparts and with regional counterparts.

“Immediately after that call, the President called Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu. The prime minister on that call made very clear this was an unprecedented day for Israel,” the official added.

“We have a very close partnership with Israel. We always share timely intelligence about threats in the regions with Israel and other partners but in particular with Israel. The President directed his team to ensure providing all that support for Israel that it needs now,” he further said.

The remarks come as dozens of Hamas militants, backed by a barrage of rockets, broke out of the blockaded Gaza Strip and into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday on October 7.

Following which, a stunned Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza, with its prime minister saying the country is now at war with Hamas and vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.”

In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles (24 kilometres) from the Gaza border.

In some places, they roamed for hours, gunning down civilians and soldiers as Israel’s military scrambled to muster a response. Gunbattles continued well after nightfall, and militants held hostages in standoffs in two towns and occupied a police station in a third.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, in a live briefing on X, said that the unprecedented attack on Israeli citizens will generate an unprecedented response from Israel.

“Hamas is responsible for this. Each and every Israeli and each and every Palestinian who is killed, it’s on Hamas.

“Our response will be unlike anything we have delivered in the past. This is going to be a long and difficult war. We will strike back. We will make Hamas pay a price they have never paid,” the IDF spokesperson said.

Israel-Palestine War Day 2 LIVE Updates: A look at history of Arab-Israel conflict

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Israel-Palestine War Day 2 LIVE updates: On the second day of war, Israeli soldiers fought to repel Hamas militants and exchanged fire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, raising the prospect of a broader regional conflagration a day after an unprecedented surprise attack on southern Israel by Palestinian militants that killed hundreds of Israelis. Israel has officially declared war on Hamas and intensified airstrikes. Follow LIVE updates here

An Israeli airstrike has flattened a high-rise building in central Gaza City. The 14-story Palestine Tower is home to dozens of families. But it also held offices connected to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups.

Israel gave inhabitants a 10-minute warning before it destroyed the building, which was evacuated. There were no injuries. Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, promised a harsh response.

Tel Aviv must stand on one foot and wait for our earth-shattering response, he said. In past rounds of fighting, Israel has destroyed Gaza high-rises, claiming they were used by militants, but destroying offices and leaving scores of people homeless. That included the building that housed The Associated Press bureau in a 2021 war.

Hamas militants fired thousands of rockets and sent dozens of fighters into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday, killing dozens and stunning the country. Israel said it is now at war with Hamas and launched airstrikes in Gaza, vowing to inflict an unprecedented price.

Hamas militants were still fighting gunbattles inside several Israeli communities hours after the incursion began. Israel’s national rescue service said at least 70 people were killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years. An unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians were also seized and taken into Gaza, an enormously sensitive issue for Israel.

At least 198 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed in Israel’s retaliation and at least 1,610 wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said. The strength, sophistication and timing of the attack shocked Israelis. Hamas fighters used explosives to break through the border fence enclosing the long-blockaded Mediterranean territory, then crossed with motorcycles, pickup trucks, paragliders and speed boats on the coast.

Bodies of dead Israeli civilians and Hamas militants were seen on streets of Israeli towns. Associated Press photos showed an abducted elderly Israeli woman surrounded by gunmen being brought back into Gaza on a golf cart and another woman squeezed between two fighters on a motorcycle. Images on social media appeared to show fighters parading what seemed to be captured Israeli military vehicles through Gaza streets and a dead Israeli soldier being dragged and trampled by crowd of Palestinians.

The assault threatened to spiral into a greater conflict, mirroring previous conflicts between Israel and the Hamas militants ruling Gaza that brought widespread death and destruction in Gaza and days of rocket fire on Israeli towns. We are at war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address, declaring a mass army mobilization. Not an operation,’ not a round,’ but at war.

The enemy will pay an unprecedented price, he added, promising that Israel would return fire of a magnitude that the enemy has not known. The shadowy leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, said the assault was in response to the 16-year blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids inside West Bank cities over the past year, violence at Al Aqsa the disputed Jerusalem holy site sacred to Jews as the Temple Mount increasing attacks by settlers on Palestinians and growth of settlements.

Enough is enough, Deif, who does not appear in public, said in the recorded message. He said the morning attack was only the start of what he called Operation Al-Aqsa Storm and called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight. Today the people are regaining their revolution. At a meeting of top security officials Saturday, Netanyahu said the first priority was to cleanse” southern Israel of infiltrators, followed by a greater retaliation in Gaza.

The serious incursion on Simchat Torah, a normally joyous day when Jews complete the annual cycle of reading the Torah scroll, revived painful memories of the 1973 Mideast war practically 50 years to the day, in which Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, aiming to take back Israeli-occupied territories. Comparisons to one of the most traumatic moments in Israeli history sharpened criticism of Netanyahu and his far-right allies, who had campaigned on more aggressive action against threats from Gaza. Political commentators lambasted the government over its failure to anticipate what appeared to be a Hamas attack unseen in its level of planning and coordination.

Asked by reporters how Hamas had managed to catch the army off guard, Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, an Israeli army spokesman, replied, That’s a good question. The Israeli military struck targets in Gaza in response for some 2,500 rockets that sent air raid sirens wailing constantly as far north as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) away. It said its forces were engaged in gunfights with Hamas militants who had infiltrated Israel in at least seven locations.

The abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers raised a particularly thorny issue for Israel. Their number was not immediately known. Videos released by Hamas appeared to show at least three Israelis captured alive, and AP photos showed at least three civilians brought in Gaza, including the two women. Israeli television showed images of a young man stripped down to his pants being led on foot in a chokehold and reported that elderly women with dementia as well as workers from Thailand and the Philippines were among the captives.

Hamas surprise attack out of Gaza stuns Israel and leaves hundreds dead in fighting, retaliation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Hamas fighters took an unknown number of civilians and soldiers captive into Gaza, a deeply sensitive issue for Israel, in harrowing scenes posted on social media videos.

Backed by a barrage of rockets, dozens of Hamas militants broke out of the blockaded Gaza Strip and into nearby Israeli towns, killing dozens and abducting others in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday Saturday.

A stunned Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza, with its prime minister saying the country is now at war with Hamas and vowing to inflict an “unprecedented price.” In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles (24 kilometres) from the Gaza border. In some places, they roamed for hours, gunning down civilians and soldiers as Israel’s military scrambled to muster a response. Gunbattles continued well after nightfall, and militants held hostages in standoffs in two towns and occupied a police station in a third.

Israeli media, citing rescue service officials, said at least 250 people were killed and 1,500 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in decades. At least 232 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed and at least 1,700 wounded in Israeli strikes, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

Hamas fighters took an unknown number of civilians and soldiers captive into Gaza, a deeply sensitive issue for Israel, in harrowing scenes posted on social media videos.

The conflict threatened to escalate to an even deadlier stage with Israel’s vows of greater retaliation. Previous conflicts between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers brought widespread death and destruction in Gaza and days of rocket fire on Israeli towns.

The situation is potentially more volatile now, with Israel’s far-right government stung by the security breach and with Palestinians in despair over a never-ending occupation in the West Bank and suffocating blockade of Gaza.

In a televised address Saturday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who earlier declared Israel to be at war, said the military will use all of its strength to destroy Hamas’ capabilities and “take revenge for this black day. But he warned, “This war will take time. It will be difficult.” “All the places that Hamas hides in, operates from, we will turn them into ruins,” he added. “Get out of there now,” he told Gaza residents, who have no way to leave the tiny, overcrowded Mediterranean territory of 2.3 million people.

After nightfall, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza intensified, flattening several residential buildings in giant explosions, including a 14-story tower that held dozens of apartments as well as Hamas offices in central Gaza City. Israeli forces fired a warning just before, and there were no reports of casualties.

Soon after, a Hamas rocket barrage into central Israel hit four cities, including Tel Aviv and a nearby suburb, where two people were seriously injured. Throughout the day, Hamas fired more than 3,500 rockets, the Israeli military said.

In the southern Gaza city of Rafah, an Israeli airstrike late Saturday flattened a home, killing 12 members of the Abu Qouto family, neighbours said. Ten members of a family in the northern town of Jebalya were killed in another airstrike, relatives said. It was not known why the homes were targeted.

The strength, sophistication and timing of the Saturday morning attack shocked Israelis. Hamas fighters used explosives to break through the border fence enclosing Gaza, then crossed with motorcycles, pickup trucks, paragliders and speed boats on the coast without resistance from the military.

In some towns, a trail of civilians’ bodies lay where they had encountered the advancing gunmen. On the road outside the town of Sderot, a bloodied woman slumped dead in the seat of her car. At least nine people gunned down at a bus shelter in the town were laid out on stretchers on the street, their bags still on the curb nearby. One woman, screaming, embraced the body of a family member sprawled under a sheet next to a toppled motorcycle; as she was led away, she picked up the dead person’s helmet from the ground nearby.

In amateur video, hundreds of terrified young people who had been dancing at a rave fled for their lives after Hamas militants entered the area and began firing at them. Israeli media said dozens of people were killed.

Associated Press photos showed an abducted elderly Israeli woman being brought back into Gaza on a golf cart by Hamas gunmen and another woman squeezed between two fighters on a motorcycle. Images also showed fighters parading captured Israeli military vehicles through Gaza streets.

Among the dead in Israel was Col. Jonathan Steinberg, a senior officer who commanded the military’s Nahal Brigade, a prominent infantry unit.

The shadowy leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, said the assault was in response to the 16-year blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids inside West Bank cities over the past year, violence at Al Aqsa — the disputed Jerusalem holy site sacred to Jews as the Temple Mount — increasing attacks by settlers on Palestinians and growth of settlements.

“Enough is enough,” Deif, who does not appear in public, said in the recorded message. He said the attack was only the start of what he called “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm” and called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight. “Today the people are regaining their revolution.” The Hamas incursion on Simchat Torah, a normally joyous day when Jews complete the annual cycle of reading the Torah scroll, revived painful memories of the 1973 Mideast war practically 50 years to the day, in which Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, aiming to take back Israeli-occupied territories.

Comparisons to one of the most traumatic moments in Israeli history sharpened criticism of Netanyahu and his far-right allies, who had campaigned on more aggressive action against threats from Gaza. Political commentators lambasted the government and military over its failure to anticipate what appeared to be a Hamas attack unseen in its level of planning and coordination.

Asked by reporters how Hamas had managed to catch the army off guard, Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, an Israeli army spokesman, replied, “That’s a good question.” The abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers also raised a particularly thorny issue for Israel, which has a history of making heavily lopsided exchanges to bring captive Israelis home.

Hamas’ military wing claimed it was holding dozens of Israeli soldiers captive in “safe places” and tunnels in the Gaza Strip. Hecht confirmed that a number of Israelis were abducted but would not give a figure, saying only that the number was “substantial.” If true, the claim could set the stage for complicated negotiations on a swap with Israel, which is holding thousands of Palestinians in its prisons.

An unknown number of civilians were also taken. AP journalists saw four taken from the kibbutz of Kfar Azza, including two women. In Gaza, a black jeep pulled to a stop and, when the rear door opened, a young Israeli woman stumbled out, bleeding from the head and with her hands tied behind her back. A man waving a gun in the air grabbed her by the hair and pushed her into the vehicle’s back seat. Israeli TV reported that workers from Thailand and the Philippines were also among the captives.

In the kibbutz of Nahal Oz, just 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) from the Gaza Strip, terrified residents who were huddled indoors said they could hear constant gunfire echoing off the buildings as firefights continued.

“With rockets we somehow feel safer, knowing that we have the Iron Dome (missile defence system) and our safe rooms. But knowing that terrorists are walking around communities is a different kind of fear,” said Mirjam Reijnen, a 42-year-old volunteer firefighter and mother of three.

Earlier in the day, Netanyahu vowed that Hamas “will pay an unprecedented price.” A major question now was whether Israel will launch a ground assault into Gaza, a move that in the past has brought intensified casualties.

Israel’s military was bringing four divisions of troops as well as tanks to the Gaza border, joining 31 battalions already in the area, the spokesman Hagari said. And the Israeli military later released an Arabic-language video warning Gazans to leave their homes in targeted areas of the dense coastal enclave.

In Gaza, much of the population was thrown into darkness after nightfall as electrical supplies from Israel — which supplies almost all the territories’ power — were cut off. Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that Israel would stop supplying electricity, fuel and goods to Gaza.

Hamas said it had planned for a potentially long fight. “We are prepared for all options, including all-out war,” the deputy head of the Hamas political bureau, Saleh al-Arouri, told Al-Jazeera TV. “We are ready to do whatever is necessary for the dignity and freedom of our people.” U.S. President Joe Biden said from the White House that he had spoken with Netanyahu to say the United States “stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people, full stop.” Saudi Arabia, which has been in talks with the U.S. about normalising relations with Israel, called on both sides to exercise restraint. The kingdom said it had repeatedly warned about the danger of “the situation exploding as a result of the continued occupation (and) the Palestinian people being deprived of their legitimate rights.” Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group congratulated Hamas, praising the attack as a response to “Israeli crimes.” The group said its command in Lebanon was in contact with Hamas about the operation.

The attack comes at a time of historic division within Israel over Netanyahu’s proposal to overhaul the judiciary. Mass protests over the plan have sent hundreds of thousands of Israeli demonstrators into the streets and prompted hundreds of military reservists to avoid volunteer duty — turmoil that has raised fears over the military’s battlefield readiness.

It also comes at a time of mounting tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, with the peace process effectively dead for years. Over the past year, Israel’s far-right government has ramped up settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, Israeli settler violence has displaced hundreds of Palestinians there and tensions have flared around a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site.

Palestinians demonstrated in towns and cities around the West Bank on Saturday night amid the offensive from Gaza and Israeli retaliation. Palestinian health officials said Israeli fire killed five there, but gave few details.

Hamas vs Israel: Here’s where Palestinian militant group stands against Israel’s military prowess

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Despite launching an offensive against Israel when it comes to the military might Hamas is nowhere closer to the prowess of its rival.

Israel has declared a ‘state of war’ after the rocket attack by Palestinian armed group Hamas early morning on Saturday. The latest flare-up in the Palestine-Israel conflict is a result of the launch of ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ by Hamas. The situation escalated as Hamas fired thousands of rockets towards Israel and its fighters reportedly invaded Israeli territory.

This aggression comes a day after the 50th anniversary of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Despite launching an offensive against Israel when it comes to military might Hamas is nowhere closer to the prowess of its rival. Let’s take a look into the capabilities of both sides as the latest flare-up has resulted in a full-scale war-like situation.

Hamas leadership

Hamas, a prominent militant movement and one of the major political parties in the Palestinian Territories, continues to play a central role in the region. With governance over more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the group has gained international attention due to its active armed resistance against Israel.

Founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a Palestinian cleric and former Muslim Brotherhood activist, Hamas emerged in December 1987 as the Brotherhood’s political arm in Gaza during the First Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. Since its inception, Hamas has pursued its mission, including countering rival Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and publishing a charter in 1988, which boldly called for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic society in historic Palestine.

Despite international scrutiny, Hamas, an acronym for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya (Islamic Resistance Movement), has remained unwavering in its stance against Israel. Notably, in 2017, the organisation presented a revised document that accepted the concept of an interim Palestinian State along the Green Line border established before the Six-Day War. However, it stopped short of recognising Israel, maintaining its enduring position.

In the current political landscape, Ismail Haniyeh holds the position of political chief, succeeding long-time leader Khaled Meshaal in 2017.

Hamas’ Arsenal

The program ‘What is Hidden is Greater,’ aired on Qatar’s Al Jazeera channel on September 13, revealed exclusive footage showcasing members of Hamas’ armed wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, collecting Iranian Fajr missiles and Kornet Anti-Tank shells. According to Hamas, these weapons were obtained through clandestine means, bypassing military bases, and aviation and maritime patrols. The report also exposed the manufacturing of new missiles using Israeli missile remnants from the 2014 war in Gaza.

Additionally, an anonymous arms dealer in Gaza disclosed to Al-Monitor that various military factions, led by Hamas, possess Iranian R-160 and Fajr-5 missiles with a range of 100 kilometres (62 miles). They also have drones, anti-tank missiles and shoulder-launched rockets supplied by Russia. Plans are underway to acquire Chinese C-704 missiles, anti-ship missiles with a range of 35 kilometres (21 miles) and radar systems for guided missiles.

Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal

Israel’s nuclear capabilities continue to be shrouded in secrecy, as the country neither confirms nor denies the existence of its nuclear arsenal. According to the Arms Control Centre, Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons. Estimates suggest that the nation has approximately 90 plutonium-based nuclear warheads, with enough plutonium production capacity for 100-200 weapons, according to reports.

Further insights from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute indicate that Israel is thought to have around 80 nuclear weapons. Among these, approximately 30 are gravity bombs designed for delivery by aircraft, while the remaining 50 are intended for deployment via Jericho II medium-range ballistic missiles. These missiles are believed to be stationed in caves at a military base east of Jerusalem, mounted on mobile launchers. Notably, there is uncertainty surrounding the operational status of a new Jericho III intermediate-range ballistic missile, following a rocket propulsion system test conducted by Israel in 2013.

Summary

Reacting to the distressing developments in Israel, leaders from around the world were quick to condemn the attacks and offer their solidarity with the nation.

In a shocking turn of events, the world witnessed an unprecedented series of rocket attacks on Israel by the Palestinian armed group Hamas on Saturday (October 7), leading to a swift and resounding international response. Israel’s national rescue service said at least 40 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years.

At least 561 wounded people were being treated in Israeli hospitals, including at least 77 who were in critical condition, according to an Associated Press count based on public statements and calls to hospitals.

In the aftermath of the relentless rocket strikes, Israel declared a ‘state of war,’ citing numerous infiltrations and rocket attacks originating from the Gaza Strip.

In a video statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Israel was now at war and pledged that Hamas would “pay a price” for their aggression. Reports have also emerged suggesting that Hamas militants have taken several Israelis hostage, intensifying the crisis further.

Global Leaders Express Outrage and Solidarity

Reacting to the distressing developments in Israel, leaders from around the world were quick to condemn the attacks and offer their solidarity with the nation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep shock at the “terrorist attacks” on Israel. He conveyed India’s unwavering support, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak echoed the sentiments, labeling the perpetrators as “Hamas terrorists” and affirming Israel’s absolute right to self-defense.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called for restraint on all sides, urging Israelis and Palestinians to refrain from actions that could further escalate the volatile situation. He emphasised the need for parties involved to avoid “aggressive acts,” as reported by Reuters.

European Council President Charles Michel and French President Emmanuel Macron also joined the chorus of condemnation. Michel stated that the European Union stood in solidarity with the Israeli people, while Macron decried the “terrorist attacks” against Israel, expressing full solidarity with the victims and their families.

The US White House also issued a firm condemnation of the attack launched by “Hamas terrorists” on Israel. The United States expressed unwavering disapproval, stating, “The United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians.”

Additionally, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan maintained close communication with Israeli counterparts regarding the situation.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte of The Netherlands spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu, denouncing the unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel. He emphasised The Netherlands’ unwavering condemnation of this terrorist violence and its full support for Israel’s right to self-defense.

Calls for Restraint and Diplomacy

Egypt, a key regional player, issued a warning about the potential “grave consequences” of an escalation in tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. The Egyptian foreign ministry called for the exercise of maximum restraint and emphasised the importance of safeguarding civilian lives.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri engaged in discussions with European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, underlining the need for restraint from both sides to prevent serious risks.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned the Hamas attack against Israel, insisting that violence and rockets against innocent civilians must cease immediately. She expressed unwavering support for Israel’s right to self-defense under international law.

Russia, maintaining a diplomatic stance, reported that it was in contact with Israel, the Palestinians, and Arab countries to address the escalating conflict. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov stressed the importance of restraint as a fundamental principle in managing the situation.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry also issued statement condemning the ongoing rocket attacks on Israel. They expressed their support for Israel’s right to defend itself and called for an end to violence and terror.

The Greek foreign ministry also strongly criticised the heavy rocket attacks from Gaza against Israel, declaring Greece’s support for Israel and its profound concern over this unacceptable escalation of violence.

Israel declares ‘State of War’ after Hamas rocket attack, videos of air strike emerge

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

A barrage of rockets slammed into southern and central Israel on Saturday morning, which also included Jerusalem where the sirens blared at around 8:15 (local standard time), said Jerusalem Post.

Israel declared a ‘state of war’ and also launched air strikes on Gaza after the fierce rocket attack by Palestine’s Hamas. In a video message, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country is at war and Hamas will pay an ‘unprecedented price’.

According to reports, Hamas militants launched a multi-front attack on Israel early morning on Saturday by infiltrating into the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea. Thousands of rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza.

At least 22 Israelis have been killed since the start of the attack by Hamas, according to Israeli emergency services, quoted by local media, reported Al Jazeera.

As reported by ANI, an Israel Defence Force official stated, “There has been widespread rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza, and terrorists have infiltrated the territory through various entry points. Residents in the south and centre of the country are required to be in close proximity to be protected, and those who are in Gaza periphery should remain within a secure space.”

A barrage of rockets slammed into southern and central Israel on Saturday morning, which also included Jerusalem where the sirens blared at around 8:15 (local standard time), said Jerusalem Post.

The Israeli national emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA) said that the attacks have impacted 16 people across the country including two in critical condition, six in moderate while seven got minor injuries.

Separately, several videos of the attacks have been shared on different platforms. ANI shared a visual of the Gaza skyline siren warning blaring after the incoming of the rockets near Tel Aviv.

Additionally, the visuals of several rockets launched towards Israel from Gaza were shared.

Following the barrage of rockets from Gaza, sirens were heard in Jerusalem that warned people about the state of war.

Apart from the rocket that hit the building in Gederot regional council, the burnt parts of the rocket were found on the streets of Ashkelon.

Visuals from Tel Aviv came forward which shows the scenario of the place after the barrage of rockets launched into the country.

Earlier in January this year, an Islamic Jihad in Gaza fired two rockets towards Israel after a troop raided a refugee camp and killed seven Palestinian gunmen and two civilians. The rockets which were launched into Israeli territory set off alarms near the border. Although no casualties were reported, Israel responded by air striking on Gaza.

This assault occurred during the sacred Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah and marked one of the most significant attacks on Israel by Hamas in years.

In the wake of the recent surge in violence in Israel, the Embassy of India in Israel has issued an important advisory for Indian nationals residing in the region. The advisory came as Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, launched a major attack on Israel, leading to heightened tensions in the area.

The advisory asked Indian citizens to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and strictly adhere to safety protocols recommended by local authorities. It advised people to avoid unnecessary movement and staying close to safety shelters.

The advisory also directed Indian nationals to refer to the Israeli Home Front Command website (https://www.oref.org.il/en) for additional information and preparedness resources.

In case of emergencies, Indian citizens are urged to contact the Embassy of India in Israel at +97235226748 or send a message to cons1.telaviv@mea.gov.in. Embassy personnel are available to provide further guidance and assistance.

The situation in Israel remains tense, and Indian nationals are advised to stay updated on the latest developments and heed the guidance provided by both local authorities and the Indian Embassy to ensure their safety during this period.

This assault occurred during the sacred Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah and marked one of the most significant attacks on Israel by Hamas in years.

As a response to the rocket attacks from Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted at least two airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, according to reports from news agency AFP.

The death toll on the Israeli side from the rocket attacks has now reached four, as reported by The Times of Israel. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, addressed the nation in a televised statement, declaring, “We are at war.”

This statement marked his first public remarks since the multi-front attack by Hamas began. Netanyahu has also ordered a call-up of reservists and vowed that Hamas would face consequences like never before. “We are at war,” he emphasised, adding, “Not an ‘operation,’ not a ’round,’ but at war.”

The Israeli military has been engaged in gunfights with Hamas militants who infiltrated several towns, with Prime Minister Netanyahu ordering a military operation to clear these areas.

In a concerning development, it has been reported that Hamas has taken 35 Israelis as hostage.

Israel declares ‘state of war alert’ in response to surprise Hamas attack

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Among the casualties, a woman in her 60s lost her life due to a direct rocket hit in the southern Gderot area. Two individuals are currently in critical condition, six in moderate condition, and seven with minor injuries, according to medics from the rescue services.

Israel on Saturday (October 7) declared a “state of readiness for war” in response to a relentless barrage of rockets launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip and an infiltration incident in its southern region. The escalating conflict has claimed at least one life and left 16 individuals wounded, as tensions soar between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

Israel’s military, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), announced on Saturday morning that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi is actively assessing the situation and approving strategic plans to address the crisis.

The IDF squarely placed blame on Hamas, the governing authority in the Gaza Strip, pledging that they will be held responsible for the consequences of their actions.

“The IDF declares a state of readiness for war. Hamas… which is behind this attack, will bear the results and responsibility for the events,” the statement from the Israeli army said.

Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical service, confirmed the loss of one life in the rocket attacks, with an additional 16 individuals sustaining injuries.

Among the casualties, a woman in her 60s lost her life due to a direct rocket hit in the southern Gderot area. Two individuals are currently in critical condition, six in moderate condition, and seven with minor injuries, according to medics from the rescue services.

In a stern warning, the IDF emphasised that “the Hamas terror group will pay a very heavy price” for their surprise assault earlier today, which included a combined operation comprising rocket launches and a terrorist infiltration into Israeli territory.

Responding to the intensifying situation, Mohammed Deif, the Head of Hamas’ military wing, issued a statement declaring, “We warned the enemy not to continue its aggression against the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Ha’aretz online reported.

Deif hinted that this is merely the first phase of Hamas’ renewed efforts against Israel.

As the crisis unfolds, the Israeli military has advised residents of towns near the Gaza Strip to stay indoors and take shelter in their homes, while urging the broader public to remain close to bomb shelters.

Additionally, unverified footage has emerged from the Gaza Strip, allegedly showing Hamas militants displaying the body of an IDF soldier reportedly taken from Israel during the attack.

“The graphic videos show the body being taken out of a truck, as a crowd swarms around it,” the Times of Israel newspaper reported.

In response to the deteriorating situation, Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant has authorised the mobilisation of reserve soldiers in accordance with the IDF’s needs, as per an official press statement from his office.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently en route to the Defence Ministry Headquarters, where he will lead a security assessment involving all heads of the security establishment, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Israel alleges rocket firing from Gaza

Summary

The Israeli military says it intercepted a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip into its territory on Monday. It was the first time in months that a rocket has been fired into Israel from the blockaded Palestinian territory controlled by the Hamas militant group. Israeli-Palestinian tensions have soared following clashes at a Jerusalem holy site and a wave of attacks and military raids.

The Israeli military says it intercepted a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on Monday. It was the first time in months that a rocket has been fired into Israel from the blockaded Palestinian territory controlled by the Hamas militant group. Israeli-Palestinian tensions have soared following clashes at a Jerusalem holy site and a wave of attacks and military raids.

Hours earlier, the leader of the Islamic Jihad militant group had issued a brief, cryptic warning, condemning Israeli violations in Jerusalem. “The enemy’s(Israeli) threats to halt facilitations for Gaza can’t silence us from what’s happening in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank,” said Ziad al-Nakhala, who is based outside the Palestinian territories.

Also Read: Tel Aviv Attack: At Least 2 Dead In Attack At Bar, Police Say; 8 Injured

Islamic Jihad boasts an arsenal of rockets, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all projectiles fired from the territory and usually carries out airstrikes in response. Earlier on Monday, Israeli troops shot and wounded two Palestinians during clashes that broke out during an arrest raid in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military said it arrested 11 Palestinians in operations across the territory overnight. In a raid in the village of Yamun, near the city of Jenin, the army said dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks and explosives at troops. Soldiers responded with “live ammunition toward suspects who hurled explosive devices,” the military said. The Palestinian Health Ministry said two men were hospitalized after being critically wounded.

Israel has carried out a wave of arrest raids and other operations in recent weeks that it says are aimed at preventing further attacks after Palestinian assailants killed at least 14 people inside Israel.

Two of the attackers came from in and around Jenin, which has long been a bastion of armed struggle against Israeli rule. At least 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in recent weeks, according to an Associated Press count. Many had carried out attacks or were involved in clashes, but an unarmed woman and a lawyer who appears to have been a bystander were also among those killed.

Israel captured the West Bank, along with the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians seek those territories for a future independent state. Tensions have run high in recent days, during the confluence of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the week-long Jewish holiday of Passover.

Palestinian protesters and the Israeli police have clashed at a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site, known to Muslims as the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and to Jews as the Temple Mount. Jordan and Egypt, which made peace with Israel decades ago and coordinate with it on security matters, have condemned its actions at the holy site. Jordan which serves as custodian of the site summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires in protest on Monday.

An Arab party that made history last year by joining Israel’s governing coalition on Sunday suspended its participation in a largely symbolic act that nevertheless reflected the sensitivity of the holy site, which is at the emotional heart of the century-old conflict.

Israel says security forces were forced to enter the compound after Palestinians stockpiled stones and other objects and hurled rocks in the direction of an adjacent Jewish holy site. The Palestinians and Arab states accused the police of storming the site in violation of longstanding arrangements known as the status quo.

Protests and clashes in and around the shrine last year helped fuel the 11-day war between Israel and the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza.

Summary

The Israeli military said its airstrikes were in “response to continual launches of incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel throughout the day.”

Israeli aircraft bombed Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip on Saturday in response to incendiary balloons launched from the Palestinian enclave, Israel’s military said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the strike that targeted what the military said was a rocket launching site and a compound belonging to Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza. Hamas had no immediate comment.

Since a May 21 ceasefire ended 11 days of Israel-Hamas fighting, Palestinians in Gaza have sporadically launched balloons laden with incendiary material across the border, causing fires that have burned fields in Israel.

Palestinians say the balloons aim to pressure Israel to ease restrictions on the coastal enclave that were tightened during the May fighting.

Balloon launches had mostly ebbed after Israel eased some restrictions on Gaza.

But on Friday, balloons were again launched from Gaza, causing at least four brush fires in areas near the Israel-Gaza frontier.

The Israeli military said its airstrikes were in “response to continual launches of incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel throughout the day.”

The blazes along the Gaza frontier broke out on Friday as Israel separately traded fire over its northern border with Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah, on the third day of cross-border salvoes amid wider regional tensions with Iran.
