Summary

President Draupdi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the guests, before the start of the dinner, on a dais with its backdrop depicting the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — in Bihar, as per PTI.

An ensemble of musicians, some of whom played sursingar, mohan veena, dilruba and other rare instruments, regaled G20 world leaders during the ceremonial dinner hosted for them by President Droupadi Murmu.

The gala dinner was hosted at the Bharat Mandapam on day one of the G20 Summit, which will end on Sunday.

Top world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and several others, have gathered here for the G20 Summit.

Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the guests, before the start of the dinner, on a dais with its backdrop depicting the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — in Bihar.

On one side of the backdrop carrying a striking image of the monument, the logo of G20 was depicted. In contrast, the other side carried the theme of the grouping under India’s presidency  — ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future’.

India’s culinary heritage in all its diversity was served on the platter to the world leaders, officials said, adding millet-based dishes were also on the specially-curated menu.

Sources said sweets of varied kinds were offered, including ‘ghewar’, the traditional dish consumed during the monsoon season in India.

“At the gala dinner hosted by the president, India showcased its diverse musical heritage to the world. An ensemble of virtuoso instrumentalists bringing different styles of classical and contemporary music performed for world leaders attending the G20 Summit here,” a senior official said.

The key highlight was a performance by the ensemble ‘Gaandharva Atodyam’, which performed the ‘Bharat Vadya Darshanam’  — Musical Journey of India.

It was a unique medley featuring an exquisite symphony of rare musical instruments from across the country, including sursingar, mohan veena, jal tarang, jodiya pawa, dhangali, and dilruba among others, showcasing Hindustani, Carnatic, folk and contemporary music, officials said.

The programme was conceptualised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi to celebrate the rich tapestry of the country’s musical heritage.

The performance will begin with compositions of Vilambit Laya (slow tempo), followed by Madhya Laya (medium fast tempo), ending with a few scores in Druta Laya (fast tempo), they had earlier said.

The musicians will play instruments in traditional attires of the region they belong to, officials had said, adding, that this first-of-its-kind initiative ensemble exemplifies the power of music in celebrating the country’s diverse artistic expressions in a truly aesthetic manner.

India’s presidency of the G20 is officially over. Up next, Brazil.

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremonially handed over the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the conclusion of the G20 Summit in Delhi.

In a symbolic gesture marking the ceremonial handover of the G20 presidency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, passed the gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The event marked the end of the G20 Summit being held in Delhi on September 9-10.

During the closing session, Modi presented the gavel and extended his best wishes to Brazil as they prepared to assume the presidency. Brazil is set to officially take the helm of this prestigious group on December 1 this year.

For LIVE updates on the G20 Summit in Delhi, check here.

India will still hold the responsibility of the G20 Presidency until November 2023. In his closing remarks, PM Modi proposed a virtual session in November to review progress made on matters decided during the two-day G20 Summit.

“We can review the topics decided in this Summit, in that virtual session…I hope you all will connect in the virtual session…With this, I declare the conclusion of G 20 Summit,” Modi said.

Addressing the gathering, Lula da Silva conveyed his congratulations to Modi and expressed gratitude to India for its dedication to highlighting the issues that matter to emerging economies.

“I congratulate PM Modi for efficiently leading G20 bloc and for excellent work in this summit,” Lula said.

He also commended India for championing the concerns of emerging economies.

The G20 Summit 2024 will be held in November 2024 in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. Lula da Silva announced that the technical groups and preparatory ministerial meetings will be hosted in several cities across the country’s five regions.

Lula da Silva also outlined three key priorities for the G20: social inclusion and the fight against hunger, energy transition and sustainable development, and the reform of global governance institutions.

“…We are living in a world where wealth is more concentrated in which millions of human beings still go hungry, where sustainable development is always threatened, in which government institutions still reflect the reality of the middle of the last century. We will only be able to face all these problems if we address the issue of inequality — inequality of income, of access to healthcare, education, food, gender and race and also of representation is at the origin of these anomalies,” he said.

He also highlighted that two task forces will be created — the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, and the Global Mobilisation Against Climate Change.

The priorities align with Brazil’s G20 Presidency motto which is “Building a fair world and sustainable planet.”

He emphasised the need for new developing countries to join the ranks of permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council to restore its political strength.

“We want greater representation for emerging countries at the World Bank and the IMF,” he said.

During his remarks, Lula da Silva noted that he was “very much touched and emotional” by the visit to Delhi’s Rajghat earlier on Sunday morning to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

“Everybody knows that in my political life, Mahatma Gandhi has great meaning because the struggle with non-violence was a role model that I followed for many decades when I was in the Labour Movement,” the Brazilian president said.

US President Joe Biden on Sunday said this year’s G20 summit has proven that the grouping can still drive solutions to its most pressing issues. He made the remarks in a post on X as he left for Vietnam after he and several other G20 leaders paid homage at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat here this morning.

“At a moment when the global economy is suffering from the overlapping shocks of the climate crisis, fragility, and conflict, this year’s Summit proved that the G20 can still drive solutions to our most pressing issues,” Biden said. ‘Nothing to be proud of’ says Ukraine on Delhi G20 declaration, here’s how it is different from Bali

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The foreign ministry of Ukraine expressed its discontent with the G20’s joint declaration stating, it was “nothing to be proud of”. Last year during the G20 summit in Bali, which took place more than eight months after the conflict began in Ukraine, the group issued a statement expressing its condemnation of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine. The New Delhi declaration this year unlike its Indonesian counterpart, does not explicitly mention Russia in connection with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of all countries respecting the territorial integrity of other nations. meanwhile

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its dissatisfaction with the G20’s joint declaration, characterizing it as “unimpressive.” This discontent stems from the fact that the declaration does not have any mention to Russia. Oleg Nikolenko, the spokesperson for the foreign ministry, took to social media to underscore the deficiencies in the document.

He shared a screenshot of the relevant section of the joint declaration, where he had crossed out several parts of the text in red and replaced them with wording that reflects Ukraine’s perspective, emphasising that Ukraine is a victim of unprovoked Russian aggression.

Notably, this year in addition to the leaders of the 19 G20 nations and the European Union, India has extended invitations to the heads of state or government from nine other countries for the summit. Despite Western pressures, the Modi government decided not to include the President of Ukraine in this list of “special invitees.”

Catch the live coverage of G20 Summit here

According to Reuters, Nikolenko posted on Facebook, saying, “It is clear that the participation of the Ukrainian side (in the G20 meeting) would have allowed the participants to better understand the situation.”

He pointed out that the document had stated that “all states” should “refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state.”

Nikolenko said that there was no direct reference to Russia in the declaration, unlike a previous G20 statement from Bali in 2022, which cited a UN resolution condemning “in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”

What did the G20 Bali Declaration say?

At the G20 summit held on the Indonesian island of Bali in November 2022, a Western-led initiative took center stage, focusing on condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This summit brought together leaders from major economies to address a wide range of pressing global issues, including concerns such as hunger and nuclear threats.

During this annual gathering of G20 leaders, which took place more than eight months after the conflict began in Ukraine, the group issued a statement expressing its condemnation of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine stating “deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine”. The statement also called for Moscow’s immediate and unconditional withdrawal from Kyiv.

Of note, the Bali statement acknowledged that while “most members” strongly condemned the war in Ukraine, there were varying perspectives and assessments of the situation, as well as the sanctions imposed.

“Many members agreed that the recovery of the global economy has slowed and is facing a major setback as a result of Russiaôs war against Ukraine, which was strongly condemned, and called for an end to the war. One member expressed the view that the sanctions are adding to existing challenges,” the statement had mentioned.

What does the G20 Delhi Declaration say on Russia-Ukraine war?

During the G20 summit, leaders collectively urged all nations to abstain from employing or threatening to employ force to acquire territory. They also asserted that considering the use of nuclear weapons is “inadmissible.” This subtle critique, in the context of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, marks a significant departure from the declaration made during the previous G20 summit in Indonesia.

The 2023 New Delhi Declaration, unlike its Indonesian counterpart, does not explicitly mention Russia in connection with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of all countries respecting the territorial integrity of other nations. The declaration underscores that the G20 forum is not the appropriate platform to address geopolitical and security matters, which have the potential to greatly impact the global economy.

The Delhi Declaration emphasised that “Today’s era must not be of war”.

Additionally, the Delhi Declaration is being seen as climbed down by the West, which has previously called for strong condemnation of Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Responding to this External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, on Saturday while addressing a press briefing said the situation was different a year ago and the New Delhi Declaration “responds to the situation and concerns as it is today”.

Jaishankar while responding to a question on the change in language referring to the Ukraine conflict in the New Delhi Declaration from the G20 position in the Bali document, said, “Regarding the change in language on the Russia-Ukraine conflict from the Bali Declaration – Bali was Bali, New Delhi is Delhi. Many things have happened since the Bali Declaration.”

G20 Summit | British PM Rishi Sunak, wife Akshata Murthy offer prayers at Akshardham temple in Delhi — WATCH

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty visited Akshardham temple in Delhi before the G20 Summit, where they participated in rituals.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty visited Delhi’s Akshardham temple on Sunday morning ahead of today’s G20 Summit sessions. There, the couple performed an aarti and pooja and offered their prayers.

Sunak’s trip to the temple was followed soon after by a visit to Rajghat, where he, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 30 other world leaders, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

The prime minister donned trousers and a shirt while his wife, Akshata Murthy, dressed in a kurta with palazzo pants, to the temple. They arrived early in the morning and were greeted with a traditional welcome.

Swamis and senior leaders from the Akshardham Mandir warmly welcomed Sunak and conveyed a special message on behalf of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).

During his visit, the British Prime Minister was given a comprehensive overview of Swaminarayan Akshardham, a sprawling 100-acre spiritual and cultural complex that showcases the rich traditions and ancient architecture of India, while promoting the timeless Hindu spiritual principles of faith, devotion, and harmony, according to a statement issued by BAPS.

Inside the main temple complex, Sunak and his wife paid their respects to the sacred images and observed the temple’s intricate art and architecture.

The couple also participated in the “abhishek,” a ritual pouring of water, on the “murti” of Shri Nilkanth Varni Maharaj, and offered prayers for world peace, progress, and harmony, as per the statement.

Sunak expressed his thoughts on the visit, stating, “My wife and I were delighted to visit Swaminarayan Akshardham for darshan and puja this morning. We were amazed and awed by the beauty of this temple and its universal message of peace, harmony, and becoming a better human being. This is not only a place of worship but also a landmark that portrays India’s values, culture, and contributions to the world.”

He continued, “We see today in Britain these very same values and culture through the positive contributions the British Indian community makes to our country.”

“I was honored to have received the blessings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj conveyed to me this morning, and I understand that His Holiness is inaugurating another beautiful Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Robbinsville, USA very soon. I would like to send my very best wishes to His Holiness and all the devotees of BAPS ahead of the opening,” Sunak added.

Brahmavihari Swami, the senior swami of the sanstha, expressed his honour in welcoming the British Prime Minister to Swaminarayan Akshardham and sharing Mahant Swami Maharaj’s message of peace, unity, and public service.

He emphasised that the UK’s relationship with India is grounded in a bond of friendship, fostered by cultural exchanges, and bolstered by a vibrant Indian diaspora in the UK.

The British Prime Minister spent nearly an hour at the temple, engaging in “darshan and puja.” According to the temple’s director, Sunak’s experience at the temple was “extraordinary.”

“He performed the Pooja and Aarti with a lot of faith…We showed him the temple and also gave him a model of the temple as a gift…He enjoyed every minute here…he kept on extending time…His wife was also very happy,” Akshardham temple director Jyotindra Dave told ANI.

Ahead of Sunak’s visit to Akshardham temple, security arrangements around the complex in Delhi were tightened.

In a pre-visit interview with PTI, Sunak remarked, “I am hugely proud of my Indian roots and my connections to India. As you know, my wife is Indian, and being a proud Hindu means I will always have a connection to India and the people of India.”

The 43-year-old leader of the Conservative Party was first elected as an MP in 2015. He was appointed as the Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020 by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In October of the same year, he made history by becoming the first Indian-origin British Prime Minister.

His wife Akshata Murty is the daughter of India’s billionaire tech magnate Narayana Murthy and philanthropist and educator Sudha Murty.

Delhi Traffic Police implemented a Controlled Zone 2, prohibiting the operation of buses on Ring Road between ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Sarai Kale Khan. Buses were not operating on the remaining stretch of Ring Road and the road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi.

Prior to his visit to Rajghat and the continuation of the G20 Summit, UK PM Rishi Sunak visited Delhi’s Akshardham temple where he did pooja and aarti.

The scheduled visit to Rajghat was uncertain as of earlier this morning after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light to moderate rains in Delhi. The IMD warned of waterlogging, damage to plants and partial damage to vulnerable structures, and advised people to avoid those structures and take safe shelters. Delhi residents and visitors were also advised to avoid travelling if possible.

“It constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.”

The Declaration also called for a strong, sustainable, and inclusive growth as an answer to the uneven recovery the world has seen from the pandemic-infused plunder, and flagged the need for trillions of dollars for countries to meet their climate goals and clean energy technologies.

According to a report by Russian news agency TASS, Russia’s G20 sherpa Svetlana Lukash, told a news conference that the negotiations on the Ukrainian issue at the G20 summit in New Delhi were very complicated, but the collective position of the BRICS countries worked.

G20 Summit 2023: Here is what world leaders plan to do for gender equality

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The G20 Summit has laid down several initiatives to promote gender equality across various fields. The G20 has decided to offer lifelong support to women and girls in attaining primary level as well as higher education

The G20 Summit 2023 has begun, and a series of important proposals, discussions, and decisions have ensued. The G20 has doubled down on their belief that gender equality is of “fundamental importance” and that the empowerment of all women and girls would have a multiplier effect on their goal to achieve the Agenda 2030. Apart from socio-economic development, this time they have decided to encourage female participation in climate action.

Initiatives to be undertaken by G20 to ensure gender equality

According to the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, the forum will continue to work on its Brisbane Goal of reducing the gap in labour force participation. For this, the implementation of the G20 Roadmap Towards and Beyond the Brisbane Goal ‘25 by 25’ has been emphasised and annual reports by ILO and OECD will be collected for the same. The G20 initiatives for gender equality also aim to promote affordable, safe, and quality education for women and girls.

Moreover, the G20 has decided to offer lifelong support to women and girls in attaining primary level as well as higher education. The G20 has reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating gender-based violence in the corporate world, including sexual harassment. They look forward to a complete transformation of the labour world with women taking over the domain. Further, they aim to help all women and girls, including those with disabilities, in finding work while also promoting leadership skills.

To bridge the gender digital divide, the forum stated that they would promote regulatory policy frameworks that allow women to take part in the formation and execution of national digital strategies. They will also address the gender barriers that hinder the affordability, accessibility, and usage of digital technologies.

Furthermore, initiatives to encourage women’s participation in the digital economy would be welcomed. The G20 also invites women to take part in climate action and welcomes their partnership, decision-making skills, and leadership in initiatives undertaken for climate change.

On the other hand, the forum also wants to ensure that all women and girls have access to the required nutrition. Therefore, affordable, safe, and nutritious food would be made available to schoolgirls. Further, women farmers would be encouraged by the promotion of inclusive agriculture value chains.

The forum is also committed to promoting nutrition and food system initiatives that consider gender and age factors. The G20 aims to achieve this by resorting to creative financial instruments and social safety nets to fight the problem of hunger and malnutrition effectively, especially in the case of women and girls.
