Money Money Money: Should passive funds be part of your investment strategy?

Passive funds are coming of age in India. The debate over active investing and passive index investing is a long-standing one. Many AMCs are launching new funds. This year itself, there were several NFOs and many of these funds are going beyond the plain vanilla Nifty-based or Sensex-based investing models.

Read Here: Things to keep in mind before investing in a passive fund

In this episode of ‘Money Money Money’, the focus is on helping one develop an evolved and thought-out passive strategy for one’s mutual fund portfolio. There are some basic questions – should one complicate it with a lot of newer strategies or should just keep it simple?

To answer these questions CNBC-TV18’s Surabhi Upadhyay spoke to Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO of Anand Rathi Wealth Management.

Azeez said, “Passive is gaining momentum, like you rightly highlighted. It has grown as an industry not just in terms of the number of products which are being offered from 52 to 111 today only on the equity side, that is a very large jump almost 16-17 percent growth in the number of schemes. The startling bit is that there was only Rs 21,000 crore, which was there, which has now ballooned to almost Rs 3 lakh crore plus in the passive strategy. So it is a very important point to be highlighted to the viewer to look at passive.”

He added, “Should passive form a part of your strategy, is cost the only variable to be looked at? To my mind, if you break down passive into smaller components then it will be very easy to comprehend whether which part of the passive needs to form a part of your portfolio.”

“Are all deserving a merit to infuse into your portfolio, the answer is no. Do all of them required to be ignored? The answer is no. So the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Because when you buy things, not just services, like fund management, cost is one of the variables, not the only variable. So there are some places where there is value and a cost efficiency, if that balance can be found out then it is a brilliant one.”

Is it good time to buy gold?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Gold has underperformed over the past 1 year, it is down 8-9 percent in dollar terms – so the question is should one think of investing in gold? Feroze Azeez of Anand Rathi Wealth Management discussed this further.

Tracking the markets, one must have been hearing a lot about ‘taper talk’. It is a fear that interest rates around the world starting from the US are about to rise. So, is that going to bring about more market volatility as stocks have already run up so much, and therefore should investors start increasing allocation to gold? Gold has underperformed over the past 1 year, it is down 8-9 percent in dollar terms – so the question is should one think of investing in gold? Feroze Azeez of Anand Rathi Wealth Management discussed this further.

“I think it is a good time to think of gold,” said Azeez.

“There are different periods when gold should be considered in one’s portfolio not strategically for years and decades. Today would definitely be a reasonable time and I would say the probabilities of gold outperforming its counterpart from a stability standpoint, which is debt is very high, upwards of 80-90 percent that gold can outperform debt over the next three years in India,” he added.

“If you are digitally savvy and transact online, you would have noticed that these platforms — Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe, Kuvera – a whole host of them – many of them are offering you the option of buying and selling what is called digital gold.”

How do this work and the promises that one can buy gold for as little as Re 1, is it a physical gold purchase, where does this gold stored, does it have the RBI mandate?  Vikas Singh, MD and CEO from MMTC-PAMP, answered all these questions.

“Through these platforms, whether it is Paytm or PhonePe or Google Pay, you are engaging in a transaction with MMTC-PAMP on one side and yourself as a customer on the other side and we transfer the gold either you buy or you sell it back to us or you have a third option of redeeming it. So, it is as flexible as it gets,” said Singh.

Value as an investing strategy in midcap funds would be better: Feroze Azeez

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO at Anand Rathi Wealth Management, explained how one can assess which midcap mutual fund (MF) will ride the market wave better.

Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO at Anand Rathi Wealth Management, explained how one can assess which midcap mutual fund (MF) will ride the market wave better.

“Over the last few years, midcaps as a segment hasn’t done well and that is why midcaps as a universe are quoting at a discounted P/E to largecaps. Last 20 years, they always quote at a premium. So last three years, 6 percent returns is quite disappointed,” he said.

“I personally believe that if you are going in the midcap space, which is the larger canvas for the fund manager, value as a strategy over the next one to one and a half years would be a better efficient strategy to go with,” he added.

“Price to earning becomes a very good indicator for you to understand what the valuation you are buying at is. Price to book is also important indicator of valuation,” he stated.

When asked which are the best funds to invest into, he replied, “I will name them – DSP Midcap, Nippon India, Invesco India, Edelweiss Midcap and HDFC Midcap. These are five funds from a valuation standpoint have a larger potential and have a target NAV which will be computed year from now has the largest headroom from current NAV to target NAV.”

Anand Rathi’s Feroze Azeez discusses funds best placed to ride the PSU wave

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Public sector undertaking (PSU) stocks have been on a tear. Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth Management discussed which mutual fund (MF) schemes are best placed for investors who prefer to capitalise on this opportunity via MFs.

“There are some funds which have reasonable exposure to PSUs and can be used as a proxy to play the PSU rally.”

Azeez believes participating in a broader theme using a MF is a good idea rather than going stock-specific for a retail investor.

“HDFC Flexi Cap Fund has about 37 percent exposure. If you want to play the banking theme then this is the best fund. From a banking standpoint both Franklin Bluechip Fund and HDFC Flexi Cap have the largest component of the PSU in the banking space.”

Speaking about debt funds, Azeez said, “From the debt angle, there is a huge opportunity – especially the Edelweiss Bharat Bond ETF on a 10-year basis have a 7.1 percent yield taxed at the end. So locking in a 6.5 percent post-tax yield is going to be very easy using a Bharat Bond ETF.”

In terms of oil and gas space, Azeez said, “Nippon Fund has the largest exposure from oil and gas standpoint. But the exposure to play that sector using a MF is not so good idea because the exposure is sub-10 percent.”
