Summary

Kohli said that Mahi bhai (MS DhonI) always had a different mindset… He would take the game to the final over and create a wave of nervousness in the opposition camp.

Ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB’s) last match as the IPL 2024 playoffs begin, Jio Cinema interacted with star batter Virat Kohli, who currently holds the orange cap. During the interaction, Kohli mentioned about how MS Dhoni always took the game to the 20th over in (T20Is) or the 50th over (in ODIs).

“No matter what people say about Mahi Bhai, only he knows what he has planned for the team. He takes the games to the final overs, but I always had a different mindset. I often said let’s end this in 19th over or 49th over, but if he is with us, he will take it to the final over and create a wave of nervousness in the opposition,” Kohli said.

Asked to bat first, RCB posted a challenging 218 runs for the loss of five wickets against CSK in what was a must-win game for both teams. Skipper Faf du Plessis (54) and Virat Kohli (47) shared a 78-run opening stand in 9.4 overs after the match was interrupted by showers for some time at the end of the third over. Coming onto bat at No. 3, Rajat Patidar made 41 off 23 balls and stitched 71 runs with Cameron Green (38 not out off 17) for the second wicket to keep the tempo up.

Towards the end, Dinesh Karthik (14 off 6) and Glenn Maxwell (16 off 5) played short little cameos to lift RCB. CSK needed 201 runs to qualify for the playoffs because of a better run rate even if they lose, but could only manage 191 for 7.

Rachin Ravindra scored 61 off 37 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane made 42 not out and 33 respectively. Towards the end, the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who could have probably played his last IPL match, scored a 13-ball 25-run cameo. But it was not enough. Yash Dayal kept his cool in the last over and returned with figures of 2/42 for RCB.

Rain interrupted proceedings in the Indian Premier League match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings after only three overs of play.

Daryl Mitchell takes a stunning catch near the boundary line and dismissed Virat Kohli at 47 in a crucial Indian Premier League match on Saturday.

After rain interrupted proceedings in the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings after only three overs of play, Kohli resumed the game with good intentions. Just 3 runs away from his half-century, Kohli tried to hit a big shot to Santner’s delivery when Daryl Mitchell managed to grab the ball.

Asked to bat first, RCB were 31 for no loss with Virat Kohli (19 not out) and Faf du Plessis (12 not out) in the middle, when a drizzle halted play before it turned into a downpour.

There has been a forecast of heavy rain across the city. The match is vital for both sides as they vie for the final available berth in the playoffs. A washout or a win for the visitors will see them through.

As for the hosts, they will need to win the game by 18 runs to better CSK’s net run rate and make the playoffs.

CSK won the toss and elected to bowl against RCB with one change, bringing in Mitchell Santner in place of Moeen Ali. For RCB, Will Jacks has been replaced by Glenn Maxwell, while Swapnil Singh has been named as part of the impact sub.

Playing XI:

Chennai Super Kings: Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Daryl Mitchell, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh, Maheesh Theekshana.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Faf du Plessis (c), Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, Cameron Green, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Karn Sharma, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Siraj.

Watch: Ajinkya and Rachin’s timely exchange helps to dismiss Virat Kohli

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

At the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday when RCB was in their 12th over, a tiki-taka catch between Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra at midwicket cost RCB their star batter – Virat Kohli.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Mustafizur Rahman dismantled Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s top order in the first 10 overs in the opening fixture of IPL 2024. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday when RCB was in their 12th over, a tiki-taka catch between Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra at midwicket cost RCB their star batter – Virat Kohli.

After a slower ball delivery from Mustafizur Rahman, Kohli went for a pull shot and Rahane managed to take the catch at deep midwicket. However, Rahane handed it over to Ravindra before sliding into the boundary cushions and dismissed Kohli.

Watch the video here:

RCB got off to a cracking start, with skipper Faf du Plessis leading the charge by notching 35 off 23 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries.

Chahar and Tushar Deshpande were messing their lengths, and new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad brought about a fresh change by introducing Mustafizur Rahman into the attack.

Rahman unleashed a change of pace to force du Plessis into a mishit. The South African’s shot landed in the hands of New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who ran and dived to take an acrobatic catch.
Soon afterwards, Rahman pulled the length back, angling the ball away from Patidar and inducing an edge off his bat for the ball to stick into the gloves of MS Dhoni behind the stumps.
