The slow over rate has become a recurring issue this season, as a lot of games have stretched past the four-hour mark

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday.
RR bowler Sandeep Sharma snatched the game out of CSK’s den in the last over despite MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s firework shots.

The slow over rate has become a recurring issue this season, as a lot of games have stretched past the four-hour mark.

“RR has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday,” the IPL said in a statement.

“As it was the team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” an IPL statement said.

Chennai lost the match with just 5 runs to spare, while they needed 21 runs in the last 1 over. CSK started poorly, losing their start opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for eight runs. Devon Conway with 50 off 38 balls and Ajinkya Rahane’s 31 tried to give some foundation but later on, the middle order collapsed in quick succession. Chennai lost another three wickets in the space of 20 deliveries and crashed to 113-6.

Adam Zampa (1-43) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2-27) disrupted Chennai’s gameplan and put the pressure on last five overs. Dhoni and Jadeja when they came together CSK needed 60 runs off the last five overs, and they managed all but 56 of them.

Rahane wants to play Test match at Wankhede, after smashing fastest 50 of IPL 2023 for CSK

Summary

Ajinkya Rahane never gives up and after surprising the cricketing world with the fastest fifty of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, the out of favour India batter yearns to play a Test match at his home ground.

Ajinkya Rahane never gives up and after surprising the cricketing world with the fastest fifty of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, the out of favour India batter yearns to play a Test match at his home ground.

On CSK debut, Rahane smashed seven fours and three sixes in his 61 from just 27 balls and the fastest fifty of the season came off just 19 balls. Chasing 158 against Mumbai Indians, CSK finished at 159/3 in 18.1 overs.

“I always enjoy playing at Wankhede. I have never played a Test here. I would want to play a Test here,” said Rahane, who led India to a famous Test series win in Australia in 2021.

Rahane was not supposed to start the game but an injury to Moeen Ali gave him an opportunity. “There is still a long way to go. Today, I was not sure about my place in the eleven. I got to know just before the toss, for me it is about playing one game at a time and staying in the moment,” Rahane told the media on Saturday night.

“Anything can happen. Today, I was not sure about my game. For me, I will never give up. It is about playing with enjoyment and passion.

“Whatever format I play, it is about giving my best every time, rather than thinking about the future, (things) which is not in my hand, not in my control, for me it’s all about giving my best every time and be as positive as possible and whenever I get an opportunity I should be ready for that,” Rahane said.

Rahana was dropped from the Test team following the tour of South Africa in January 2022. While Cheteshwar Pujara was able to make a comeback, Rahane couldn’t.

The 34-year-old said the knowledge of his homeground helped him play the way he did.

“I just got to know before the toss that I am playing. Unfortunately, Moeen was unwell. I know this wicket really well, have got an idea how the wicket was playing or how the ball was behaving, that helped me,” Rahane.

“When I went in, it was about playing my normal game. The intent was really good. My preparation was really good, we had a really good camp before coming here, had a good domestic season, batting wise I was feeling really good. I am happy that I did really well and we won the game,” he added.

As he often does, Rahane played pure cricketing shots to regal the crowd. Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher said it was Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner’s spin bowling that hurt his side more than Rahane’s knock.

“It is difficult to look at our bowlers and their batters when we have not got enough runs on the board. In a game of T20 cricket especially now that you have got impact players.

“We had seven frontline batters today for us to get but 157/8 was not good enough. With that start (61/1 in six overs) we probably should have got 180-190 and then we could have judged our bowling,” Boucher said.

“Rahane played some good cricketing shots. But I think it is more about the bowling that did us at the end of the day. The bowling hurt us more than Rahane’s batting,” he added.

IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya lavishes praise on CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad hit 92 off 50 balls in the season IPL 2023 season opener against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. But Gaikwad’s efforts failed to deliver result for CSK as Gujarat Titans won the encounter by 5 wickets.

Chennai Super Kings batter Ruturaj Gaikwad’s dazzling knock of 92 went in vain in the IPL opener against Gujarat Titans but opposition captain Hardik Pandya was all praise of him, saying that he will do wonders for Indian cricket.

Gaikwad’s classy knock off just 50 balls from which he struck four boundaries and nine sixes took CSK to 178 for 7. The Titans, however, chased down the target with four balls to spare, riding on Shubman Gill’s 63 off 36 balls on Friday.

“Some of the shots he (Gaikwad) played was nothing to do with the bowling. There were some tremendous shots. Full credit to him the way he batted, and if he continues to do so he is going to do wonders for Indian cricket,” Pandya told reporters at the post-match conference.

“He has the game and when the time comes I am sure the Indian cricket team will back him enough,” he said.

The 26-year-old Gaikwad has played nine T20Is after making his debut in July 2021, scoring 135 runs at a modest average of 16.87. He had also played one ODI in 2022.

Pandya said the way Gaikwad was batting on Friday, it was getting difficult to bowl at him.

“Obviously, we all know what kind of a player he (Gaikwad) is. It looked like at one time CSK would score 220-230. We were finding it difficult on what area we should bowl at him. I had genuinely felt that we would not get him out at all,” the Titans captain said.

“He is all-round cricketer, some of the shots he played were not bad balls, actually good balls and that makes a lot of difference. As a bowling unit and as a captain, that made my job more difficult,” he said.

Analysing his side’s win in the last over, Pandya said, “A couple of shots from myself and Shubman put us in a difficult situation but again Rahul (Tewatia) getting the best out of his ability and Rashid coming in and showing what he can do.

“So overall we are quite happy but in a way, a lot of things we can learn from this victory. Even (if) we had lost we would have learnt a lot of things.” The Titans needed 41 off the last five overs but CSK managed to take the game down to the wire. It needed a cameo from Rashid Khan (10 not out off 3 balls) to settled the nerves in the Titans dressing room.

“It’s very good to start with a win. What Rashid did, we expected that from him, we showed a lot of trust and confidence in his batting, which he had shown again and again. When we lost Kane (injured while fielding during CSK innings) that put us a little back.

“I don’t think it was too long. It was five overs and 40 runs and we would have got it any day. Just that we lost one too many wickets.

“It boils down to the shot which I played and the shot Shubman played. It’s not about blaming, it is accepting our mistakes. Within the team we have set quite a high standard. Even we would have lost the game, we would have said we were not at our best but we were still competing.” Talking about his bowling unit, he said, “As bowlers, we are bound to be put under pressure at some point in time. My job is very simple: let them (bowlers) do what they are good at. And if they are confused, I am always standing by their side.

“I am very lucky, I have so many talented bowlers. I just backed them. It is very simple, they can bluff the batters but not me. When something is happening, my rule is: I always back my bowlers till I know what they are doing.”

Suresh Raina only scored one Test hundred. That was in a match against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2010. Plentty on knocks are worth recalling from that drawn match . In that game Kumar Sangakkara hit double-hundred and Mahela Jayawardene scored 174 in Sri Lanka's first innings. In response Indian opener Virender Sehwag blasted 99 from 101 balls and Sachin Tendulakr matched Kumar Sangakkara in getting a double century. But another knock worth mentioning is Raina's 120.

India faced South Africa in a Group C match of the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 in Gross Islet in the West Indies. Batting first India hit 186/5 thanks to a brilliant hundred from the bat of Suresh Raina. Raina had already notched hundreds in ODIs and Test matches. So, the century against South Africa made him India's first all-format centurion.

Two of Suresh Raina's most crucial knocks in ODIs came during India's successful 2011 ODI World Cup campaign. After missing from India's playing XI for the initial matches, Raina was drafted into the team for the crucial quarterfinal match against Australia. In that game India were chasing a tricky 261. Although Yuvraj Singh did the bluk of the scoring with a swashbuckling 57, but Raina's steady 34 ensured that India beat Australia to qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinal against arch-rivals Pakistan, Raina's quickfire 36 batting at no. 7 ensured that India were able to set a challenging target of 261.

After the successful World Cup campaign India toured England. In an ODI match at Lord's, batting first India werre reduced to 110/4. It was then that Suresh Raina came together with MS Dhoni and the two batsmen put up a 169-run partnership. Raina played a brutal knock of 84 from 75 balls which included seven fours and two sixes. One of the two sixes that Raina hit was so hard that the ball flew out of the Lord's stadium. From the other end Dhoni scored 78 to take India to 280/5. Although Raina's knock did not result in India's win but it was one of the best knock that the left handed batsman has played in his ODI career.

But Suresh Raina too played a vital role in India's win in Adelaide that day. Raina hit 74 from a a mere 56 deliveries hitting five fours and three sixes to push India's total to 300/7.

All cricket fans rate Suresh Raina's stagering knock of 87 from just 25 balls in the Qualifier 2 of the 2014 IPL vs Kings XI Punjab as his best ever performace in the IPL. Batting first Punjab has hit a humengous 226/6 in the knock-out game. Chennai Super Kings had to score 227 at any cost to stay alive. The team was 1/1 when Raina walked to the middle. And in the matter of just a fee overs, Raina had hammered the ball all over the park as he hit 12 fours and 6 sixes in his 25-ball stay in the middle. Raina' promising knock made CSK faithful believe that the target could be achieved. But unfortunately Raina got out and CSK innings folded at 202/7 to lose the match.

CSK’s Johannesburg franchise in SA T20 league reveals its official name – Check the name, the captain and the coach details here

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The logo of the team acquired by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited was also unveiled. Former South Africa captain and once Chennai Super Kings batsman Faf Du Plessis will be the captain of the Joburg Super Kings. The team will be coached by former Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming who is also the coach of CSK in the IPL.

The Johannesburg-based franchise of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL) in the South Africa T20 (SA20) league has been named Joburg Super Kings. Faf du Plessis will lead the side, while Stephen Fleming will be the coach, it was announced on Thursday.

The announcement was made during an interactive session involving K S Viswanathan, CEO of CSKCL, Graeme Smith, League Commissioner SA20, Joburg Super Kings captain du Plessis, head coach Fleming and Jono Leaf-Wright, CEO of The Wanderers, a press note said.

The logo of the team acquired by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited was also unveiled. Du Plessis, captain of the Joburg Super Kings, spoke about how the league can have an impact on the country’s cricket and the difference it made to the younger generation.

“I have an extremely lucky and long relationship with Chennai. When the opportunity presented itself again, I was extremely happy with that. I think it’s going to be (the SA20 league) incredibly crucial for the sustainability of South African cricket. “I’ve almost been seeing first-hand the difference that league cricket can have an impact on a country’s cricket. Certainly been involved with the IPL for the last 10-11 years. You see the difference that it makes to the young generation and the young players, especially in that Indian cricket team and environment,” du Plessis was quoted as saying. He said the knowledge, wisdom and experience that one can share across in league cricket was extremely important for the growth of the national team. Lavishing praise on his former skipper Smith, AB de Villiers and CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he said he had learnt so much from them.

“I’ve been lucky as a player and as a captain to have some really good leaders in my time. Starting under Graeme (Smith), then moving to AB de Villiers, and then moving my time across to Chennai Super Kings, where Stephen Fleming was really influential at the beginning of my leadership journey. “To be around MS Dhoni, to just watch and observe exactly what he does on and off the field…I’m extremely grateful to have learned from so many great players and leaders in the game,” he said. “In terms of leadership, Dhoni has done the most. He’s the best guy to learn from.”

Summary

Pathirana has played two T20 games and has picked two wickets. His last professional cricket match was in U-19 Cricket World Cup this year in which he picked two wickets against Pakistan.

Chennai Super Kings on Thursday named young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana as a replacement for injured Adam Milne in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

New Zealand’s Milne suffered a hamstring injury in CSK’s first match against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26, which was also the season opener, weeks after which he has been ruled out of the tournament. Pathirana, a young 19-year old medium pacer, was a part of Sri Lanka’s U19 World Cup squads in 2020 and 2022. “He will join CSK at the price of INR 20 lakh,” the IPL said in a statement.

CSK vs KKR IPL 2022 match report: Kolkata get off to winning start despite MS Dhoni’s fighting half-century

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Kolkata’s new boys Rahane (44), Shreyas Iyer (20*) and Billings (25) ensured their careers as Knight Riders got off to a winning start despite Dhoni’s fifty and DJ Bravo matching Malinga’s tally of 170 scalps to become joint-highest wicket-taker in the IPL.

Ajinkya Rahane’s classy 44 off 34 balls helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) get their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign off to a winning start with a 6 wicket victory against last season’s champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday, March 26.

With a 25% capacity allowed inside the stadium, the fans were treated to a vintage MS Dhoni display in the first innings as the 40-year-old scored his first half-century since IPL 2019 to help CSK overcome a rocky start and post a decent target of 132.

However, Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer got KKR off to a blistering start as they raced to 43/0 inside the powerplay. CSK soon got the breakthrough though as Iyer (16 off 16 balls) was dismissed in the 7th over when DJ Bravo entered the attack and got the opener to edge one back into the safe gloves of Dhoni.

Nitish Rana though ensured KKR didn’t lose any momentum as he smacked two fours and a six off the first 10 balls he faced. However, it was once again Bravo who got the breakthrough for CSK when he got Rana (21 off 17 balls) to mistime a pull straight to Rayudu in the 10th over.

Meanwhile, Rahane put on a classy display of perfect timing as he kept finding the boundary effortlessly, all the time playing proper cricket shots. Rahane looked set to begin life as a Knight Rider with a half-century but fell short by six runs when he found Jadeja at midwicket in the 12th over.

Sam Billings (25 off 21 balls) looked to finish things off in a hurry but became Bravo’s 170th IPL wicket when he found Tushar Deshpande at deep midwicket in the 18th over. That wicket also ensured Bravo is now level with the legendary Lasith Malinga on 170 scalps as all-time leading wicket-taker in the IPL.

Fittingly, it was Shreyas Iyer (20* off 20 balls) who scored the winning runs when he closed the game out with a boundary to ensure his maiden game both as player and captain for KKR got off with a win.

MS Dhoni rolled back the years as he posted his first half-century since IPL 2019, scoring an unbeaten 50* off 38 balls to help CSK reach 131/5. (Image: iplt20.com)

Earlier in the game, Shreyas won the Toss and opted to bowl. KKR decided to go with Sheldon Jackson behind the stumps despite including Sam Billings in the Playing XI and the decision paid off with the 35-year-old Jackson putting in an electric performance behind the wickets.

Umesh Yadav got off to an inauspicious start, sending down a no-ball on the first delivery and conceding a free-hit. However, he turned things around in double-quick time, sending back last season’s Orange Cap winner, Ruturaj Gaikwad, on a duck with his third delivery.

Yadav doubled his tally in the fifth over when Devon Conway (3 off 8 balls) looked to go for a big shot but ended up chipping the ball straight to the KKR skipper at mid-on for an easy catch.

Robin Uthappa came out all guns blazing, hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes to race to 28 off just 20 balls. However, he was outfoxed by Varun Chakravarthy who sent one spinning down leg and Jackson’s lightning quick glovework reduced CSK to 49/3 in the 8th over.

Things got worse for CSK in the next over when skipper Jadeja nudged one to short midwicket and Ambati Rayudu (15 off 17 balls) took off only to be caught in no-man’s land with Narine completing an easy Run Out at the non-striker’s end.

Shivam Dube survived another run-out scare, again with Jadeja at the crease, in the 11th over but was out on the very next delivery when he mistimed a pull shot against Andre Russell straight to Narine at midwicket to leave CSK reeling at 61/5 after 11 overs.

MS Dhoni then walked out to take strike alongside his successor but things were looking dire for Chennai as they managed just one boundary, courtesy a misfield, in the next six overs. However, with his team staring at a below par total, with just 85 runs on the board going into the final 3 overs, MS Dhoni, as he has on countless occasions in the past, rose to the occasion.

In vintage Dhoni fashion, the former CSK skipper rolled back the years as he went from 15 off 25 balls to 50* off 38 balls with a flurry of boundaries. Jadeja (26* off 28 balls) grabbed his solitary boundary off the final delivery which he sent flying over the ropes to help CSK post a modest total of 131/5.

CSK vs KKR IPL 2022 preview: New captains Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer set to lock horns in season opener

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

IPL 2022: Both CSK and KKR begin this season with new leaders at the helm as Ravindra Jadeja takes over from the legendary MS Dhoni while Shreyas Iyer replaces Eoin Morgan to lead the Knight Riders in his maiden season with the franchise.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back for its 15th season and the action kicks off with a repeat of last season’s finale as defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, March 26.

But even before a ball is bowled, CSK has already caused a major upset ahead of the tournament with MS Dhoni stepping down from captaincy and handing over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja.

The 40-year-old will continue as a player for another season and no doubt provide invaluable insights from behind the wickets as Jadeja brings his own characteristic flair to the canary yellows who will be looking to match Mumbai Indian’s record haul of five trophies this season.

From a team point of view, CSK has held on to last season’s orange cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad who will be expected to open the batting but will miss the experience of Faf du Plessis who finished just behind Gaikwad on the scoring charts last season. In his place, they’ve brought in big-hitting Kiwi Devon Conway which also provides the team with a left-right batting combination at the top of the order.

There’s loads of experience in the side with the likes of Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo and also a healthy sprinkling of youth with Shivam Dube, who can add quick runs and chip in with a few handy overs, and Sri Lankan mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana.

Meanwhile, it’s not only Jadeja who will be replacing a World Cup-winning captain at the helm on Saturday. KKR have put their trust in Shreyas Iyer after releasing Eoin Morgan who led them to the Final last season.

Iyer has been in scintillating form for Team India and will be eager to carry that into the IPL, especially with the T20 World Cup just around the corner. KKR have also been smart in recruiting Ajinkya Rahane who is expected to provide a perfect foil to Venkatesh Iyer at the top of the order while retaining the services of lethal spin duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine.

They also held on to hard-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell but will sorely miss the services of Aussie duo Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch in their first five matches as they’re both part of Australia’s ongoing tour of Pakistan.

CSK vs KKR Team News:

CSK Team News: Moeen Ali is expected to miss the tournament opener due to issues with his visa. Deepak Chahar for whom CSK shelled out an eye-watering Rs 14 crore is also out after picking up a quadriceps injury and is expected to only return to action in mid-April.

KKR Team News: As mentioned earlier, Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch are part of Australia’s ongoing tour of Pakistan, which ends on April 5 and will miss the initial part of the tournament.

Where to Watch: The matches will be telecast live on the Star Sports network. Viewers can also tune into the action via the Disney+ Hotstar app.

CSK vs KKR Pitch Report: The Wankhede track is known to help batters with the smaller boundaries making it easy to clear the ropes. However, the spinners will be expected to play a big role in the middle overs with some turn on offer.

CSK vs KKR Top Fantasy League Picks:

Top Fantasy Batting Picks: Ruturaj Gaikwad finished last season as the top scorer with 635 runs from 16 matches, playing a big role in CSK’s title run and will no doubt be expected to replicate that form. Nitish Rana will also be a good pick with his penchant for playing without fear and the smaller boundaries at Wankhede should only help him clear the ropes more frequently.

Top Fantasy All-Rounder Picks: Newly crowned captain Ravindra Jadeja will surely be one to watch out for, especially since he’s been in good touch off late with match-winning performances for the national team. Andre Russell will be another hot pick with his ability to single-handedly dictate the outcome of games with either bat or ball in hand.

Top Fantasy Bowling Picks: While the pacers may not have much joy on this Wankhede track the spin trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Maheesh Theekshana may prove to be inspirational picks. All three spinners have the ability to bamboozle batters with their vast array of variations and should pick up a few wickets.

CSK vs KKR Probable Playing XIs:

CSK Probable XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja (C), MS Dhoni (WK), Shivam Dube, Dwayne Bravo, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana and Adam Milne.

KKR Probable XI: Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Nitish Rana, Shreyas Iyer (C), Sam Billings (WK), Andre Russell, Mohammad Nabi, Sunil Narine, Shivam Mavi, Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy
