Australia smothered top-ranked England by 64 runs at Lord’s on Tuesday and ratcheted up the pressure on the home side to join the defending champion in the Cricket World Cup semifinals. First into the playoffs, the Australians successfully defended a total for the fourth consecutive match, making 285-7 stand tall by bowling out England for 221 with 5.2 overs to spare. Inspired recall Jason Behrendorff claimed a maiden 5-for while fellow left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc grabbed four to lead the tournament wickets list with 19. “You don’t win the tournament if you don’t reach the semis. That’s the first bit ticked off,” said Australia captain Aaron Finch, who led the effort with 100, his second century of this World Cup. England rose to the top of the one-day rankings thanks to fearless and imaginative chases, but fell to a third defeat in seven matches in its home World Cup, all three while chasing. Here are the highlights of the match:
ICC Cricket World Cup Highlights: Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs
ICC Cricket World Cup Highlights: Pakistan beat South Africa by 49 runs
ICC World Cup Highlights: New Zealand beat South Africa by 4 wickets
Cricket World Cup: Star India counts losses due to rain, may cost insurers millions

Summary
Lost revenues from a record number of rain-hit cricket World Cup games in England and Wales may result in insurance claims of a few million pounds for each abandoned fixture.
Lost revenues from a record number of rain-hit cricket World Cup games in England and Wales may result in insurance claims of a few million pounds for each abandoned fixture, insurance sources say.
Broadcasters, organisers, venues, advertising sponsors and catering establishments are among firms to have missed out after four matches were called off in an exceptionally rainy June.
Due to the hectic nature of the tournament, which features 48 one-day matches between May and July, finishing on July 14, there is no opportunity to reschedule, except for the semi-finals and final.
Companies typically buy contingency, or cancellation, insurance for sporting events, which covers everything from rain stopping play to terror attacks.
Lloyd’s of London insurer Beazley estimated, for example, that the football World Cup in Russia in 2018 was insured for more than $10 billion, including cover for property damage and cyber breaches, as well as cancellation.
Insurers say cover for the less-popular cricket equivalent will be much lower.
Star India has the global media rights for the cricket tournament but has licensed further rights to sports broadcasters in other countries.
However, it is likely to have lost at least 1 million pounds ($1.26 million) for each abandoned match, insurance specialists estimate, as it gains huge advertising revenue in India for a popular sport in a nation of more than one billion people.
Star India did not respond to requests for comment.
There are 123 advertising spots for broadcasters in a World Cup match, after each of the 100 overs and 20 wickets and during refreshment breaks, said Jonathan Ticehurst, a director at Lloyd’s of London insurance broker Bishopsgate, who has arranged insurance for previous cricket World Cups.
Broadcasters buy contingency insurance, as “in the event of no play, they are not able to charge” the advertisers, he said.
Ticket sales
The fixtures, several of which were sold out, also attracted ticket sales of at least a few hundred thousand pounds each, with larger games likely attracting sales of more than a million pounds, based on Reuters estimates.
Spectators get all their money back if no ball is bowled, or if the game is abandoned after a small amount of play.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which gets the revenue from the ticket sales, said it had an insurance policy against matches being called off, but declined to comment further.
Star India likely took out contingency insurance from Indian insurers, but reinsurance may have been provided by the specialist Lloyd’s of London market, insurers said.
Reinsurers share the burden of large losses with insurers, in return for part of the premium.
The ECB will likely also have bought insurance from the Lloyd’s market, along with county teams whose grounds were booked for the rained-off matches, industry sources said.
The local teams will buy insurance against lost sales from the venues’ bars and restaurants, sources said.
But insurers may also have required clients to bear the losses themselves for one, two or even three abandoned games, specialists said. At four matches, they are likely to be able to claim insurance, if not before.
“Insurers probably looked at the calendar and reckoned you would not go through the whole World Cup without two or three games being rained off,” said one underwriter.
“They will probably charge a two-game or three-game excess.”
The four abandoned matches were all at smaller venues. An abandoned match at a bigger ground in London, Birmingham or Manchester over the remaining 3-1/2 weeks of the tournament would have an even greater financial impact, insurers say.

Cricket World Cup: India and Pakistan renew rivalry under grey English skies

Noisy India and Pakistan cricket fans brought a taste of the subcontinent to Manchester on Sunday, their enthusiasm undimmed by the threat of rain looming over a World Cup match between the regional rivals that will draw a massive global audience.
Organisers received nearly 800,000 applications for tickets at the 23,000-capacity stadium in the northern English city to watch the former champions who play each other only in global tournaments because of their soured political relations.
Another one billion are expected to watch it on television.
The Old Trafford cricket ground had a festive feel with fans from both sides wearing replica jerseys, colourful headgear and sounding hooters as they began trooping in.
Pakistan have never beaten India in a World Cup but Sarfaraz Ahmed’s men received encouragement from Prime Minister Imran Khan, the former cricketer who led the country to their maiden World Cup trophy in 1992.
“Today, given the intensity of the match, both teams will come under great mental pressure and the power of the mind will decide the outcome of the match today,” Khan said in one of his tweets.
The nuclear-armed neighbours have gone to war three times since independence in the mid-20th century — and another conflict nearly erupted earlier this year, heightening the tensions around the action on the field.
Flying In
The match has drawn fans from across the world, including Ankur Bajpayee, a 39-year-old telecom executive who took a 16-hour flight from Johannesburg just to attend a match he hopes would not be a washout.
“I landed here last night and going back tomorrow,” he told Reuters.
“I’ve prayed for three things — the match should happen, India should win this match and they should win the tournament. I’m sure all three wishes will be fulfilled.”
Pakistan supporter Hassan Ghani had flown in from his home in Los Angeles for the match he said he simply could not miss.
“The games against India are always the biggest games, the rivalry is so huge, the patriotism always comes out and the atmosphere is always great,” he said.
India captain Virat Kohli has advised his team mates not to get caught in the hype around the match but Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur, who is South African, has told his players that it could be career-defining for them.
“Biggest rivalry”
Scores of Pakistani supporters wore the green team shirt and draped themselves in national flag, while their Indian counterparts wore turbans and colourful wigs as they filed in.
“It’s India-Pakistan, it’s the biggest rivalry in sports,” India fan Jay Tailor, who came from Luton in southern England, told Reuters.
“As much as they may say it’s just another game, the players are going to be nervous. With one billion people watching the game, of course there will be an element of nerves. It’s not just another game.”
Outside the stadium, Hussain was busy selling jerseys, scarves and hooters to fans from both teams.
“I’ve been here for just over an hour and have already exhausted my first lot,” the 24-year-old Pakistani, who now lives in the English city of Birmingham, said with a smile.
“My hats are selling the most, because of the chance of rain.”
Four matches in the rain-hit tournament has already been either abandoned or called off without a ball being bowled.
Fans have organised prayers in several Indian cities hoping the rain gods will spare the match.
Sarfaraz won the toss and elected to field.
