MS Dhoni illustration of new India where family name doesn’t make destiny: PM Modi

The PM said Dhoni’s rise and conduct “gives strength and inspiration to crores of youngsters who like you haven’t been to cushy schools or colleges, neither do they belong to illustrious families but they have the talent to distinguish themselves at the highest level.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the embodiment of a new India where family name does not make one’s destiny in a letter to the two-time World Cup-winning former India captain, who retired from international cricket last week.

A thankful Dhoni shared the letter on his Twitter page on Thursday, his first social media post since the “consider me retired” note on Instagram that stunned one and all on Saturday. “You have been one of the important illustrations of the spirit of new India, where family name does not make young people’s destiny but they make their own names and their own destinies,” wrote the PM in his letter. “Where we come from does not matter as long as we know where we are headed — this is the spirit that you have exuded and inspired many youngsters with,” he said.

Dhoni, who is also an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, thanked the PM for the appreciation. “An Artist,Soldier and Sportsperson what they crave for is appreciation, that their hard work and sacrifice is getting noticed and appreciated by everyone.thanks PM @narendramodi for your appreciation and good wishes,” he wrote.

In the lengthy note to the celebrated cricketer, the PM also lauded the calm demeanour with which Dhoni led the Indian team. “No matter what hairstyle you sported, your calm head remained the same in victory or defeat, which is very important for every youth,” he said referring to different hair cuts that Dhoni made famous after sporting an eye-catching long mane at the beginning of his career.

Calling him one of the greatest captains and one of the best wicketkeepers the game has seen, Modi said, “Your dependability in tough situations and your style of finishing matches, particularly the 2011 World Cup final will forever be etched in the public memory for generations.” “The correct way to assess your impact is as phenomenon.”

The 39-year-old stumper-batsman was widely considered a game-changer in international cricket and earned widespread respect for his foresight on the cricket field, which made punts look like well thought out strategy.

“Rising from humble beginnings in a small town, you burst onto the national scene, made a name for yourself and most importantly, made India proud,” Modi wrote.

The PM said Dhoni’s rise and conduct “gives strength and inspiration to crores of youngsters who like you haven’t been to cushy schools or colleges, neither do they belong to illustrious families but they have the talent to distinguish themselves at the highest level.” Modi concluded by wishing him the best for all his future endeavours.

The hero we needed and deserved: Why Indian cricket owes MS Dhoni

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

An open letter from a fan to the best wicket-keeper and captain India has produced.

Dear Dhoni, on that late December afternoon in Dhaka in 2004, when you took your first steps in international cricket — only to be run-out for a first-ball duck — no one could possibly imagine that this was history in the making. If anyone told me back then, that you’d be an indelible part of cricketing history for the next 15 years, I would have placed a big bet against that prediction.

After all, you seemed like the fluke selection. You were in the Indian team in place of a promising talent in Dinesh Karthik, whose keeping skills had bedazzled many, in just one year of international cricket. You returned from that tour with scores of 0, 12 and 7 (not out). Your unruly locks and the sparse first-class record didn’t speak for much — be it fashion or on-field talent. A zillion minus one time this would be the right reading, but in this case, well…

It didn’t take you long to make your presence felt, and in no time I became a fan. I came back home from my French examination in my Class 10 board exams to learn that you hit 148 off 123 balls, in just your fifth international match. I watched your batting highlights, with fledgling admiration, as I watched how you took Mohammed Sami and Rana Naved Ul Hassan to the cleaners. You became the first Indian wicket-keeper after Rahul Dravid to score an ODI century, that day. A new star was born.

You didn’t stop there, did you? Just months later, we followed LIVE scores on our Nokia 6600s equipped with 2g connections that we sneaked into school, as you scored 183 (not out) off just 145 balls, against Sri Lanka. Those were the days Indian batsmen would generally flounder while chasing scores in excess of 250. You chased down 299 with ease. You not only became the wicket-keeper with the highest-ever ODI score but also the batsman with the highest score in an ODI chase. If we were already your fans by now, that one knock gave us reasons to stay.

What made you different was that you re-defined cricketing greatness through unconventional means. You relied on primitively powerful batting. In an era of technique, stroke-making and class — one that boasted of Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Dravid — you were the rebel with a cause. That cause was your quest to change the face of Indian cricket for the better, forever.

After all, you were everything Indian batsmen weren’t. You preferred power over technique and loved the chase when the Indian batting pedigree was all about setting tall scores. You invented strokes that resulted in unparalleled fandom — like the helicopter shot; and some that looked as ugly as sin, but were effective nevertheless — like the ill-timed nudge to mid-wicket to steal a single.

You were no different as Indian captain either — defying general cricketing strategy while you reaped the benefits of good gambles. Who can forget tossing the ball to the obscure Joginder Sharma to bowl the final over against Pakistan in the World T20 Finals in 2007, or persisting with the mercurial Sreesanth who bowled his heart out in that tournament.

Your keeping was the stuff of champions too. Lightning-quick reflexes into your late 30s and the fastest pair of hands world cricket has ever seen resulted in 195 international stumpings — another world record and an apt one at that for a country that has won matches on the back of champion spinners.

Such was your appeal that an entirely different city — one that admittedly doesn’t have the greatest reputation for warming up to outsiders — adopted you as their favourite son. You repaid Chennnai’s faith in you too, by leading the Chennai Super Kings to three IPL titles, including one in 2018 — in the twilight of your and the team’s trajectory when many had written you and CSK off, calling you way too old to be playing T20 cricket.

Everybody whose cricket chronicling matters would remember that if Virat Kohli is the champion player that he is today, he probably owes it to your decision to send him up to bat at one-down when you knew you scored your best at that slot. Rohit Sharma wouldn’t be the batting behemoth that he is today if you didn’t take that decision to promote him as an opener during the 2013 Champions’ Trophy. R Ashwin wouldn’t be half the bowler he is today if it weren’t for your decision to pick him over and over again in white and red-ball cricket.

No wonder you remained Indian captain for nine years since that fateful World Cup in 2007, going on to win us an ODI World Cup in 2011, the Champions Trophy 2013, and send us right atop the Test rankings that very same year. No wonder India produced batting greats and bowling champions under your leadership, and birthed genuine all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya.

You identified talent, promoted team players, and took the backseat if you deemed it best for the team. In your many rearguard innings, you became the Michael Bevan that Indian cricket needed — pulling off batting heists hitherto unknown, chasing down mammoth totals with consummate ease, and successfully managing to get spectators’ pulse rates up high as you pulled off last-ball finishes.

If there was reason to love you more, it was probably because you proved on several occasions that you were human too. The twilight of your career saw you flounder while leaving chases till the end, even though your brute power and precise execution ensured that you kept giving it your one hundred percent. It was a touch ironic that your last innings had to be a run-out while you tried, single-handedly, to win us yet another world cup after scoring that fighting 50 against New Zealand, the 2019 semi-final. It was both ironic and sad that one of India’s fastest runners between the wickets had to be dismissed attempting to convert a single into a two. But it seemed pre-destined that you would exit just as you came — run-out while trying your best to win us a game.

Dear Dhoni, in a cricketing era that Ganguly and Dravid built and ably glued together, you became the hero that we needed and deserved. A lightning-quick wicket-keeper who could pack a knock with an ODI batting average of over 50, and a legendary captain for ages, made you one of the greatest ODI greats that ever existed.

It’s little wonder then that when we celebrate your greatness and all that you have achieved, we will remember the heart-stopping chases, the exuberance of confidence, and the icy cool demeanor that went before you when you strode out to the middle.

We’ll celebrate you and remember that balmy night in Bombay with Ravi Shastri’s voice reverberating: “Dhoni finishes off in style — a magnificent strike into the crowd as India lifts the World Cup once again after 28 years. The party starts in the dressing room…and it’s an Indian Captain who has been absolutely magnificent in the night of the final.”

Dhoni has inspired a whole generation and will be sorely missed: ICC

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In 98 Tests, Dhoni scored 4,876 runs with 256 catches and 38 stumpings.

Tributes continue to pour in for Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the game’s governing body ICC saying that the former India skipper “inspired a whole generation and will be sorely missed”.

Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday evening. A terse post on his Instagram page read, ‘consider me retired’.

The 39-year-old is the only captain to have won all ICC trophies — T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

“MS Dhoni is one of the all-time greats of the game. The image of his winning shot at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2011 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final is etched in the memory of cricket lovers around the world,” said ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney.

Sawhney was referring to the six which Dhoni hit off Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Kulasekara to win the ODI World Cup title at home.

“He has inspired a whole generation and will be sorely missed. On behalf of the ICC, I congratulate him for an outstanding cricket career and wish him all the best for the future,” said Sawhney.

In 98 Tests, Dhoni scored 4,876 runs with 256 catches and 38 stumpings, while amassing 10,773 runs with 321 catches and 123 stumpings in 350 ODIs.

He last turned out for India during the semifinals against New Zealand in the ICC ODI World Cup last year.

In T20Is, the 39-year-old aggregated 1617 runs with 57 catches and 34 stumpings. He scored six centuries in Tests and 10 in ODIs.

Dhoni spent 656 days as the top-ranked batsman in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings from 2006 to 2010 and was the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009.

He was in the ICC ODI Teams of the Year in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and in the ICC Test Teams of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. He won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award in 2011.

BLOG: What cricket taught me about retail business

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

A century, in days, has passed living through various stages of lockdown and the subsequent unlocking. For an avid cricket fan like me, this has also translated to 100 days of no live cricket. While ruing this fact and keeping score of kitchen essentials and live-tracking delivery of groceries, the idle mind somewhere along the way, drew a strange parallel between these two worlds. As I pondered more, the strokes flew firmly. Here is what the gentleman’s game taught me about my other muse, retail business:

A century, in days, has passed living through various stages of lockdown and the subsequent unlocking. For an avid cricket fan like me, this has also translated to 100 days of no live cricket. While ruing this fact and keeping score of kitchen essentials and live-tracking delivery of groceries, the idle mind somewhere along the way, drew a strange parallel between these two worlds. As I pondered more, the strokes flew firmly. Here is what the gentleman’s game taught me about my other muse, retail business:

E-Commerce = T20

What’s common between ordering a cheese-filled pizza online and watching a close T20 cricket match in the middle of a working day? The rush! It’s fast-paced, It’s exciting, it’s instant gratification, it’s inexpensive, it’s (more often than not) non-essential, but it’s a lot of fun.

In the last 10 years, the growth in the share of attention, investment, and popularity for both T20 and e-commerce have been unparalleled. One the one hand, Amazon’s market cap jumped from $50 billion in 2009 to $1.4 trillion while on the other, the brand value of IPL more than tripled from $2 billion to around $7 billion. While the numerical jump is just indicative of a trend, it doesn’t encapsulate the cultural shift both T20  and e-commerce brought to the arena.

Both T20 and e-commerce are considered as the future of their respective fields. Both offer ample opportunities to new players and both have relatively lower barriers to entry. An artisanal Greek yogurt maker has the same opportunity of success on eComm as Amul. This is not too different from the platform that T20 leagues provide to relatively unknown players by pitting them against the best in the world.

However, despite the stellar growth rate and valuation surge – both T20 and eCommerce account for lower contributions to their core universe than the excitement they generate. The contribution of e-commerce to overall FMCG sales as of March 2020 is still 2.8 percent (1.9 percent in March 2019) as per Nielsen.

In his career so far, Virat Kohli has played 281 T20 matches and faced 6614 balls. This pales in comparison to the 12552 balls he’s faced in just 86 Test Matches that he’s played so far. Even among bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah has bowled almost as many numbers of balls in just the 14 Test matches he’s played as he has in the 157 T20s he’s appeared in for his national & local team.

There, I said it! online shopping is T20 – maximum noise, a lot of analyst interest but – least playing time.

Kirana = Test match

For a lot of people, watching a five day Test match or visiting the corner store for provisions handed over in unattractive packaging is a tedious chore bereft of excitement. For years now, there have been multiple obituaries written for the same, all premature. Announcements of any new format or the entry of a new player – 100 Ball Match, Omni-Channel eco-systems, Big companies entering – usually expedite the pace at which these doomsday predictions are made.

While there is some merit to the decaying growth and audience interest in these formats, the robustness of their model stands unquestioned. In the initial weeks of the lockdown, in March and April, the humble Kirana store kept it fed as eCommerce players struggled to find their f(l)eet. Even as the overall contribution is trending towards a decline, Traditional trade channels account for 86 percent of all FMCG goods sold in India.

In fact, as per an EY survey, nearly 50 percent of the consumers have a more positive outlook towards their local kiranas and they are quickly becoming a trusted point in the local ecosystem.

Similarly, Test Cricket in India and around the World, despite the lack of audience interest, still accounts for the majority of the cricket played at the grassroots level. The Ranji season, English county stint, and the Australian Sheffield Shield Cup are more important to the supply pipeline for future international cricketers than T20 Leagues.

Beyond all the attention, it is the respect accorded to test cricket and traditional trade channels by industry leaders and top cricketers that is likely to ensure its longevity. The true greatness of both, a cricketer and a consumer product is measured by its performance in these channels. No matter how popular the said artisanal Greek yogurt brand would be online, it is not successful until it’s available and sold at the corner store alongside Amul Dahi!

Along the course, there will be big changes like Day-Night tests and kirana tie-ups with tech & telco players for hyper-local delivery. These will further cement their places in the overall scheme of things. Just the way T20 money is being used to keep Tests alive, chances are EComm giants will continue to invest behind Offline Retail and Traditional Channels for supply efficiency.

So, kirana stores are the real deal.  Still the toughest, least “popular” in terms of perception – most revered by players & real fans (FMCG companies, distributors and home-makers)

Supermarkets = ODIs

And now, supermarkets! They’re the ODIs of the retail channel. Both see an occasional interest from the audience. A visit to the supermarket isn’t entirely out of necessity, but neither is it as non-essential as ordering a cheese-filled pizza. Watching a One Day International match and visiting a supermarket provides maximum satisfaction when limited to occasions. Sitting through a bilateral ODI series is as cumbersome as going to the supermarket for just a bar of soap. The time and effort spent just don’t do any justice to the utility derived.

Just like ODIs offer the player an opportunity to showcase both their hitting prowess and their technical finesse, supermarkets are the perfect place for brands to sell their bestselling SKUs and test new variants. Supermarkets just like ODIs, do suffer from the “middle overs” lull during weekdays and have all the action-packed into Saturday and Sunday like power-play and the death overs.

This is why for both ODIs and supermarkets an occasion is most important for relevance. ODI needs events like the World Cup and Champions Trophy to stay exciting just the way supermarkets create retail festivals during Independence Day and price-offs to generate consumer buzz.

The supermarket is an ODI – somewhere in the middle of daily needs and irregular indulgences, best enjoyed through occasional visits.

COVID-19 substitutes, no saliva on the ball, extra referral: Test cricket set for major changes

Summary

The gentleman’s game is all set to welcome the new normal in the COVID-19 era thanks to a set of changes instituted by the International Cricket Council or ICC.

The gentleman’s game is all set to welcome the new normal in the COVID-19 era thanks to a set of changes instituted by the International Cricket Council or ICC. The new rules governing playing conditions, published on the ICC’s Twitter page, have allowed for a like-for-like replacement if any player in a Test match displays symptoms of COVID-19.

The governing body has also banned the usage of saliva to shine the cricket ball — a technique to help fast bowlers gain the coveted reverse-swing while bowling.

Local umpires to officiate, extra referral awarded

The ICC’s widely practiced system of assigning matches to neutral umpires could see its end for the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. In what is being seen as a decision to avoid travel, the cricket body has allowed non-neutral or local umpires to officiate in Tests. This means newer opportunities for umpires outside the ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires.

Given the possible drop in umpiring standards owing to non-neutral umpires, the cricket body has allowed an additional decision review or DRS per innings. This means every Test side now has three DRS appeals every innings.

In what is being seen as an attempt to mitigate a cricket’s board’s losses owing to possibly empty stadiums amid a fall in LIVE spectatorship, the ICC has allowed teams to wear an additional sponsor logo on the chest of their Test jerseys. The branding, ICC rules state, should not exceed 32 square inches.

Fast bowlers at a disadvantage

Although not unexpected, the international cricket body’s decision to ban the use of saliva on cricket balls presents a massive disadvantage to fast bowlers. The art of shining the ball using saliva or sweat sees bowlers ensure that one side of the cricket ball stays shiny while the other wears away through the course of the game. This unevenness aids in reverse-swing as the game progresses.

Reverse swing is tough to pick as a batsman as the ball swings in the opposite direction of the seam, thanks to the uneven shine. The technique was pioneered by Pakistani fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz in the late 1970s and carried on by compatriots Imran Khan and his protégées Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

The rule-change also puts fast bowlers in a quandary since existing ICC rules do not allow the use of foreign substances to shine the cricket ball. In other words, fast bowlers are not allowed to use grease, hair wax, or oil, to enhance the shine on the ball and must only rely on bodily fluids like sweat and saliva.

According to the new ICC rules, a fast bowler will be presented with two warnings for use of saliva on the cricket ball. If a third offense is committed, five penalty runs are awarded to the batting side. The new rules simply mean that a fast bowler can no longer rely on reverse-swing and fall back on pace and conventional swing while bowling.

Over time, several fast bowlers have relied on reverse swing more and more. A notable instance was the 2005 Ashes, when the English pace pack of Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff brought down the mighty Australians, to win their first Ashes in over 80 years. Among Indian fast bowlers, Zaheer Khan and more recently, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav have used reverse-swing to great success.

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie has a strong “gut feeling” that this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia will not take place due to the global COVID-19 crisis.

“I’d be worried the tournament wouldn’t go ahead,” Balbirnie told BBC Radio Ulster’s Sportsound Extra Time.

“You have to look at it logistically — there would be 16 teams flying into the country.

“The way this pandemic has panned out, a lot can happen in a couple of days, so we really don’t know yet. It’s tricky, but we’re battling on.”

He also said the lack of match practice will be an issue.

“It’s going to be a unique situation,” said the batsman.

“There won’t have been any international cricket this summer at all, so there will be a lot of people going in undercooked.

“When we get back training, we will have to be really specific as to what we want to do.”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is still confident of hosting the T20 World Cup slated to be held in Australia in October-November.

Speaking to IANS, an ICC official kept it short and said that no meeting has taken place between the international body and Cricket Australia over the last week and contingency planning continues.
