Coronavirus scare: How states are gearing up to prevent the spread of virus

As the number of coronavirus cases goes up, several states have invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897. The states have also taken measures to curb the spread of the virus. CNBC-TV18’s Archana Shukla outlines how states are gearing up to battle this pandemic.

Maharashtra

The state today declared COVID-19 an epidemic in five districts of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nagpur. All public places like cinema halls, drama theatres, gymnasiums, swimming pools to remain closed until further notice. While malls and hotels will remain open, the government has advised to avoid non-essential outing.

Schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad districts, where positive cases have been found, will remain closed, except those institutions where exams are ongoing. All other schools and colleges in the state will continue. The state has also advised companies to explore work from home option for employees.

Bihar

The state has closed its schools, colleges, coaching centres until March 31. But has assured all government schools will receive financial assistance for mid-day meals despite it being closed.

Delhi

The state has declared coronavirus outbreak as an epidemic yesterday. It has closed movie theatres, schools and colleges until March 31. It has also banned conducting IPL matches in the state.

Karnataka

The southern state has shut colleges, malls, cinema halls, hotels, bars, gym and swimming pools for a week. While schools in some regions will be open, all schools and colleges in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi – where India’s first coronavirus death was reported, have been shut for a week.

The state has cancelled leaves for all employees of the health department and contract workers anticipating more load on the health systems. It is also regulating the movement of people and vehicles from neighbouring states and has advised a strict 14-day home quarantine to all international passengers.

Odisha

The state has earmarked Rs 200 crore to combat the coronavirus threat. It has also shut cinema halls, swimming pools, gyms till March 31. Schools, colleges to also remain closed till March 31 except for holding examinations. All non-essential seminars, workshops and conferences to be cancelled. Social gatherings like religious functions, marriages etc to be regulated by local authorities.

Kerala

The southern state, which has seen the highest number of confirmed cases, schools till class seven, colleges and theatres are closed. The state government is home delivering mid-day meals to students whose schools have been shut. Government is working on improving internet facilities as people will be operating from home.

Uttar Pradesh

The northern state has closed all schools till March 21 and has installed thermal analysers along the state borders.

Schools and colleges to remain shut till March 31 in Haryana, Uttrakhand, Chhattisgarh, Manipur and Punjab.

Schools will remain shut until further notice in Jammu, Ladakh and Madhya Pradesh.

Chandigarh: Public places and Anganwadi’s to remain shut until further notice.

Andhra Pradesh: Biometric for government employees has been suspended.

Sikkim: Tourist’s entry has been banned.
