CSK vs RR IPL 2024 preview: Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals out to spoil Chennai Super Kings’ playoff hopes

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will look to stay alive in the playoff race of IPL 2024 when they take on Rajasthan Royals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 12).

CSK are fourth on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table with 12 points from 12 matches. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side have won six games and lost the same number of matches before heading into the match against RR. A victory against RR is important for the defending champions, as a loss will give an outside chance for the likes of Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to make a late dash for a playoff spot.

Both DC and LSG also have garnered 12 points from 12 games but the two sides suffer inferior net run rate compared to CSK. While DC have a net run rate of -0.316 which places the team at fifth spot. LSG are a spot behind DC and have a net run rate of -0.769.

CSK will have to win its remaining two games to ensure a safe passage into the playoff. CSK however head into the match against RR on the back of a 35-run loss at the hands of Gujarat Titans, who are already out of contention of a play-off berth.

Batting first GT’s opening duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan hit hundreds as the team posted 231/3. CSK’s Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali hit half-centuries in reply as the five-time champions could only manage 196/8 in 20 overs. GT pacer Mohit Sharma (3/31) and spinner Rashid Khan (2/38) did not allow CSK batters to score freely all through the match.

In the opposing camp RR will be itching for a victory over CSK as it will help them take a big stride forward to qualify for the play-offs. The Sanju Samson-led side are second on the IPL points table with 16 points from 11 games.

Despite being one of the in-form teams this year, RR will head into Sunday’s fixture after tasting defeat against DC.

DC scored 221/8 after its openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel hit half-centuries. Samson was the lone warrior in RR’s chase as he hit a blistering 86 off 46 balls before getting dismissed under controversial circumstances. RR fell short by 20 runs and kept themselves waiting to qualify for a playoff berth.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)

With 541 runs Ruturaj Gaikwad is the team’s leading run-scorer this year. The CSK skipper has already hit one hundred and four fifties. The onus will be on Gaikwad to give his team a fast start and release the pressure from an under-performing middle order.

Sanju Samson (RR)

RR captain Sanju Samson has enjoyed a phenomenal run in IPL 2024. The wicketkeeper batsman has piled 471 runs and hit five fifties. Samson’s brilliant show with the bat ensured his selection for the Indian squad for next month’s T20 World Cup.  With Buttler’s form taking a hit, Samson will have to fire from the middle order.

After their loss to Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings need to tighten up to keep their hopes alive for the IPL 2024 playoffs. CSK has two more matches ahead – one on Sunday against Rajasthan Royals and the second against RCB. Both the matches are high-voltage games and the results will determine the final contenders of IPL 2024.

KKR and RR are at the top of the points table with 16 points each. SRH has also caught up in the race to the plaoffs with some incredible home wins.

Can CSK qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs?

CSK have suffered two successive defeats and are currently fourth in the standings with 12 points. They need to win their next two games and only then can they qualify with 16 points. In the coming two games they can’t afford to have any more slip-ups with net run rate, as RCB can have an upper hand on run rate if they win their next two games.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said the defending champions were undone by the “high caliber” batting effort of Gujarat Titans’ openers skipper Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan during their 35-run defeat.

“It was a good onslaught and the batting was of the highest caliber. Right from the first over they disrupted our plans. It wasn’t till the latter stages we got some control,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference on Friday night.

“We didn’t execute as well as we could but the other part was the sublime batting from two very good players.” The former New Zealand captain praised Sudharsan for his effort. “In the final last year, he (Sudharsan) played beautifully, he got 96. I have watched him closely, he has got good connections around the Chennai area. He is a wonderful player and today he proved that.”

Gill (104 off 55b) and Sudharsan (103 off 51b) notched up destructive centuries in an opening stand of 210 runs to propel GT to 231/3 and then restricted the defending champions to 196/8 to stay alive in the playoff race.

However, the Chennai bowlers are expected to buckle up and do well in this fixture at home against Rajasthan, which is their strong area. The low amount of dew in this afternoon clash might help CSK spinners.

Shivam Dube’s big hits will come in handy at T20 World Cup, believes Ravi Shastri

Former Team India coach and commentator Ravi Shastri has backed CSK all-rounder Shivam Dube to come in handy at next month’s T20 World Cup. Dube is part of India’s T20 World Cup squad that will be heading to the Americas for the ICC Men’s 2024 T20 World Cup.

Dube is a key member of defending champions Chennai Super Kings. The 30-year-old has scored 350 runs this season and has a high score of 66 not-out.

“Please watch out for (him), because he is explosive, he’s devastating and he’s a match-winner,” Shastri told the International Cricket Council (ICC) website. “He hits sixes for fun, and when it comes to spin bowling, he can kill you,” the 61-year-old said.

Dube has smashed 26 sixes in this year’s IPL. Overall, he has muscled 99 sixes in 62 games. According to Shastri, Dube has the ability to change the course of the match within a few deliveries. “You want someone to change it [the game] in 20-25 balls, he’s [Dube is] the player to go to,” Shastri was quoted as saying.

“His strike rate, which will be close to 200 most of the time, will help India immensely in going forward, getting those 190s, 200s that are needed in big competitions, especially like the World Cup,” he explained.

Dube’s strike rate this year is 170.73. The 30-year-old made his IPL debut in 2019. He has represented India in one ODI and 21 T20Is. In 21 T20Is Dube has accumulated 276 runs and has a strike rate of 145.26.

The all-rounder, was adjudged the Player of the Series for his fantastic outings in the T20Is against Afghanistan in January 2024. At the time, Dube said that his ability to play big shots against spinners is a “gift given by God to him”. He simultaneously acknowledged that he needs to work harder to overcome his issues related to play pace and bounce. Dube hammered consecutive half-centuries in the opening two games against Afghanistan played at Mohali and Indore.

MS Dhoni went on a six-hitting spree to power Chennai Super Kings to a competitive 176 for six against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.

Dhoni slammed a four and a six off Mohsin before smashing Thakur for another maximum. He finished the innings with two more fours as 19 came off the last over.

Dhoni picked a ball from Thakur’s over and smashed a 101m six which was also his 65th six for Dhoni in the 20th over of the IPL.

Jadeja slammed five fours and a six to anchor the innings after a top and middle-order batting failure but Ali (30 off 20) and Dhoni (28 off 9) swung the momentum back with a late charge after the 16th over to take them to a fighting total.

Opting to bowl, KL Rahul was spot on with his bowling changes as the pacers put the CSK batters under pressure initially before spinner Krunal Pandya tightened the noose in the middle overs. But Ali’s three sixes off Ravi Bishnoi (1/44) and Mohsin Khan’s 19th over which yielded 15 overs, including four wides, a six and a four and a 19-run 20th over handed the initiative back to CSK. The last four overs yielded 63.

LSG seamers were on the money from the start as they exploited the conditions to pick up two wickets in the powerplay. Opener Rachin Ravindra’s (0) awful run continued as left-arm pacer Mohsin bowled a perfect first delivery to rattle his stumps.

Rahane (36), who opened the innings again, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (17) looked to steady things with the former pulling LSG debutant Matt Henry for the first six of their innings as 13 came off the over. Yash Thakur was introduced next in the attack and he justified Rahul’s decision by inducing an outside edge off Gaikwad with a length ball as the captain did the rest.

Rahane, however, carted two fours in the last two balls as CSK accumulated 13 runs in the over. Ravindra Jadeja promoted to no. 4, picked a boundary off Henry in the next over as CSK scored 52 for 2 in the first six overs.

Rahul’s decision to give another over to Bishnoi, however, backfired as Moeen slammed three sixes as 19 came off the 18th over before perishing. LSG paid the price for a sloppy overrate as Dhoni slammed a four and a six off Mohsin before smashing Thakur for another maximum. He finished the innings with two more fours as 19 came off the last over.

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium turned yellow when Chennai Super Kings played against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday night. MS Dhoni fans gathered in huge numbers in yellow jerseys and the stadium transformed from orange to the jersey colour of the visiting team.

Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (26) and Ajinkya Rahane (35) couldn’t capitalise on good starts, and when Shivam Dube tried to push the scoring rate with 45 off 24 balls, fast bowler Pat Cummins deceived the left-hander with a brilliant slower ball.

Ravindra Jadeja struck four boundaries in an unbeaten 31 off 23 balls but the Hyderabad pacers restricted Chennai to a below-par total.Hyderabad cruised to 166-4 with 11 balls to spare after limiting Chennai to 165-5. Despite consecutive defeats, Chennai stayed third on the table while Hyderabad moved to fifth on an inferior net run-rate.

Markram’s 50 off 36 balls, his first fifty of the campaign, followed Abhishek Sharma’s whirlwind 37 off just 12 deliveries, which provided the home team a rollicking start of 46 runs inside the first three overs. Opener Travis Head was dropped by Moeen Ali in the first over before the Australian left-hander scored. He went on to 31 off 24.

Sharma smashed three sixes and two boundaries off Mukesh Choudhary in the second over and was out in the third when he tried to slice Deepak Chahar over cover and was caught at backward point. Head and Markram added 60 runs for the second wicket and Ali came back to dismiss Markram and Shahbaz Ahmed. But, by then, the asking run rate was in Hyderabad’s favour.

Fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was wicketless in the first three games, made the first key breakthrough for Hyderabad when Rachin Ravindra, on 12, sliced a catch to Markram at mid-on in the fourth over.

Without their in-form bowler Mustafzur Rahman, Chennai Super Kings will need to sharpen their all-round game when they take on an unpredictable Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Friday. Consistency is the hallmark of CSK who would be looking to restore “normal service” following their first loss of the season against Delhi Capitals.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) broke the bank by paying Rs 8.5 crore for Uttar Pradesh (UP) batter Sameer Rizvi, 20, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday.

CSK, Gujarat Titans (GT), and Delhi Capitals (DC) were engaged in an intense tussle to secure the services of the young power hitter. Rizvi is likely to make his debut in the lucrative franchise T20 league in the coming season, on the back of a power-packed performance for the Kanpur Superstars in the UP T20 League recently.

His performances for UP has earned his comparisons with former India star and ex-CSK vice-captain Suresh Raina, who hails from the same state.
The batter smashed 455 runs on the back of two centuries in nine games, thus shooting into the limelight owing to his fantastic performances in the middle order. CSK were anyways in the lookout for a replacement for Ambati Rayudu in the batting order, and Rizvi seems to be a long-term investment from their end for the same.

He averages 49.2 at a strike rate of 134.7 with 295 runs to his name in 11 domestic T20 games. In List A cricket, Rizvi has hit 174 runs at an average of 29. Teams going great guns to get him in the auction speaks volumes of how strengthened the IPL scouting network has become over the years.

Amid growing rumours that IPL 2023 could be MS Dhoni’s swansong and that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain could soon be announcing his retirement from the league, Dhoni added further twist to the tale of his impeding departure.

At the toss time in the match between CSK and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Wednesday, toss presenter and commentator Danny Morrison nudged Dhoni to reveal his retirement plans.

After the toss, that Dhoni won and opted to field first, Morrison said to the CSK captain, “This wonderful swansong tour, your last how are you enjoying it?”

The exchange between Dhoni and Morrison on Wednesday was a throwback to IPL 2020 when the former New Zealand fast bowler-turned commentator had quizzed Dhoni on retirement plans ahead of CSK’s match against Kings XI Punjab.

Then at the toss time, Morrison kick-started his conversation with the CSK captain by asking the big question. “Could this be your last game in yellow?”

Dhoni’s answered the question in just two words “Definitely not”

JioCinema viewership touches 2.2 crore during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals

The Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals TATA IPL 2023 match on JioCinema clocked the highest ever concurrent viewership.

JioCinema broke all previous records as the concurrent viewership touched 2.2 crore when CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave a glimpse of the good old days of thrilling finishes.

But Rajasthan Royals seamer Sandeep Sharma nailed a couple of perfect block-hole deliveries to earn a three-run victory for Rajasthan Royals over Chennai Super Kings in a close IPL encounter at the Chepauk on Wednesday. The nail-biting second innings garnered the highest viewership recorded ever in this season of the Indian Premier League.

The numbers for JioCinema are bigger than what Disney+ Hotstar had when it had the streaming rights for IPL. The streaming app has been adding millions of new viewers for IPL on daily basis, according to the company.

The highest viewership recorded on Disney Hotstar was 1.86 crore during the final match of 2019 season.

JioCinema’s free streaming of the TATA IPL 2023 for all viewers in India has resulted in a record-breaking number of views in the first week – over 550 Cr. This followed a robust first weekend which amassed 147 Cr. views, yet another record for being the highest-ever opening weekend for the TATA IPL on digital. CSK vs RR preview IPL 2023: Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler will look to light up Chepauk

High on confidence after tasting success in their previous fixtures, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) gear up to face each other at former’s home ground of MA Chidambaram Stadium in match 17 of IPL 2023 on Wednesday (April 12).

CSK head back home after defeating arch rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Saturday. The same day, RR registered an emphatic win over Delhi Capitals at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

The result of Saturday meant that both CSK and RR have won two of their first three fixtures of the season. While RR sit second place on the IPL 2023 points table, CSK are fifth on the points tally.

CSK hope for English all-rounders to be available

For the match against RR, CSK will hope that its English all-rounders Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes are fit and available for selection. The two players missed the match against MI due to injuries and were replaced in the team’s playing XI by by Ajinkya Rahane and Dwaine Pretorius. Although Pretorius did not have much impact in the match, Rahane, who made his debut for the CSK at Wankhede slammed a quick fire fifty in the run chase.

Another noteworthy change that CSK made in its playing XI against MI was to bring in South African fast bowler Sisanda Magala in place of young Indian rookie Rajvardhan Hangargekar. Magala on his IPL debut picked one wicket in his four overs.

Should Ali and Stokes fail to recover in time, expect CSK captain MS Dhoni to go with an unchanged playing XI against RR.

RR hoping Jos Buttler remains fit

While CSK missed its English imports on Saturday, RR’s English overseas recruit Jos Buttler overcame an injury scare ahead of the match against DC and then went on to slam his second half-century of the season.

There were doubts that Buttler could miss a couple of matches after he had hurt his hand in RR’s match against Punjab Kings while taking a catch. Buttler needed stitches in his fingers and did not come out to open the batting for the Royals as they sent R Ashwin along with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

But doubts over Buttler’s fitness were cast aside when the wicketkeeper batsman  took the field against DC and also batted at his regular spot.

There only change that RR made in its playing XI against DC was to pick pacer Sandeep Sharma ahead of a struggling fast bowler KM Asif.

Expect RR’s playing XI to remain changed against CSK.

Should Stokes and Ali play for CSK and Buttler retains his place in RR’s playing XI, expect plenty of English English elegance in this royal clash.

Another young opening batter to watch out for in this match will be RR’s Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed opener has slammed two fifties this year and has hit as many as 21 fours. Only Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan with 27 fours has hit more fours so far this season. If Jaiswal and Jos Buttler get going then no total is beyond reach for the Royals.

The pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium is generally on the slower side that assists the spinners. Expect the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin to be amongst wickets in this match.
