Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will look to stay alive in the playoff race of IPL 2024 when they take on Rajasthan Royals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 12).
CSK are fourth on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table with 12 points from 12 matches. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side have won six games and lost the same number of matches before heading into the match against RR. A victory against RR is important for the defending champions, as a loss will give an outside chance for the likes of Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to make a late dash for a playoff spot.
Both DC and LSG also have garnered 12 points from 12 games but the two sides suffer inferior net run rate compared to CSK. While DC have a net run rate of -0.316 which places the team at fifth spot. LSG are a spot behind DC and have a net run rate of -0.769.

CSK will have to win its remaining two games to ensure a safe passage into the playoff. CSK however head into the match against RR on the back of a 35-run loss at the hands of Gujarat Titans, who are already out of contention of a play-off berth.
Batting first GT’s opening duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan hit hundreds as the team posted 231/3. CSK’s Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali hit half-centuries in reply as the five-time champions could only manage 196/8 in 20 overs. GT pacer Mohit Sharma (3/31) and spinner Rashid Khan (2/38) did not allow CSK batters to score freely all through the match.
In the opposing camp RR will be itching for a victory over CSK as it will help them take a big stride forward to qualify for the play-offs. The Sanju Samson-led side are second on the IPL points table with 16 points from 11 games.
Despite being one of the in-form teams this year, RR will head into Sunday’s fixture after tasting defeat against DC.
DC scored 221/8 after its openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel hit half-centuries. Samson was the lone warrior in RR’s chase as he hit a blistering 86 off 46 balls before getting dismissed under controversial circumstances. RR fell short by 20 runs and kept themselves waiting to qualify for a playoff berth.

With 541 runs Ruturaj Gaikwad is the team’s leading run-scorer this year. The CSK skipper has already hit one hundred and four fifties. The onus will be on Gaikwad to give his team a fast start and release the pressure from an under-performing middle order.
Sanju Samson (RR)
RR captain Sanju Samson has enjoyed a phenomenal run in IPL 2024. The wicketkeeper batsman has piled 471 runs and hit five fifties. Samson’s brilliant show with the bat ensured his selection for the Indian squad for next month’s T20 World Cup. With Buttler’s form taking a hit, Samson will have to fire from the middle order.
