Summary

The road show, which comes a day ahead of the prime minister filing his nomination, will start with the garlanding of the Madan Mohan Malviya statue at BHU and go till the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a massive road show of almost 5 kilometres on the evening of May 13 in Varanasi, before filing his nomination on May 14 from the parliamentary seat for the third time. The road show could last over four hours.

BJP is calling it PM’s road show in ‘Apni Kashi’ and, as per details, it will start with the garlanding of the Madan Mohan Malviya statue at Singh Dwar of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and go till the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. The road show will go to Vishwanath Corridor via Assi, Sonarpura, Jangam Bari, Godaulia, and Bansphatak, BJP leaders said.

BJP and other related organisations have started preparing to make the road show grand. There will be participation of lakhs of workers from the organisation to make the road show historic. Various social institutions and communities are being contacted to welcome PM Modi. During the road show, people associated with these organisations are likely to get one place each for themselves, from where they can welcome the prime minister.

A Lok Sabha Management Committee meeting was held on Tuesday in Varanasi where regional president Dilip Patel said that BJP workers are being entrusted with the responsibility to make the road show historic. Meetings of all the assembly constituencies of Varanasi parliamentary constituency were organised on Tuesday. After this, a meeting will be held with workers in all 21 divisions in one day. The organisation is busy preparing with the aim of participation of lakhs of workers in this road show, BJP leaders said.

The PM held big road shows in Varanasi before filing his nomination in 2019 and 2014 too. This is the only big campaign event that Modi does in Varanasi to seek votes from the public.

Independents withdraw support from BJP in Haryana, Saini govt reduced to minority

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Nayab Singh Saini government which enjoyed the support of two other Independents is now two short of the majority mark in the 90-member House which has a current strength of 88.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Haryana has been reduced to a minority after three Independent MLAs withdrew support and announced they would back the Congress.

The Nayab Singh Saini government which enjoyed the support of two other Independents is now two short of the majority mark in the 90-member House which has a current strength of 88.

Independent MLAs Sombir Sangwan (Dadri), Randhir Singh Gollen (Pundri) and Dharampal Gonder (Nilokheri) announced their decision at a press conference in Rohtak in the presence of Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state Congress chief Udai Bhan.

The BJP has 40 MLAs, the Congress 30 and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) 10 in the House. Recently, some JJP MLAs have indicated support to the BJP even though the latter pulled out of the coalition government in March.

JJP leader Digvijay Singh Chautala said Hooda should initiate the process to “bring down the government which has lost trust of people”. He also said Hooda should immediately meet the governor and apprise him of the situation.

The Congress said in a statement the three MLAs have already sent letters to the governor saying they have withdrawn their support to the government. “Nayab Singh Saini government is now a minority government. Saini should tender his resignation as he does not have right to stay even for a minute,” Hooda said.

The assembly elections in Haryana are due in October this year.

The Saini-led BJP government in Haryana had on March 13 won the trust vote by voice vote in the House after he took oath as the new chief minister replacing Manohar Lal Khattar.

Khattar, who is contesting Lok Sabha polls from Karnal, had resigned as MLA from Karnal. Former Haryana minister Ranjit Singh Chautala also resigned in March as MLA. He was an Independent MLA from Rania segment and resigned on March 24 as he joined the BJP, which has announced his candidature for Hisar Lok Sabha seat.

Voters brave heatwave as phase-3 polling concludes, experts weigh in

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Syed Zafar Islam, National Spokesperson for the BJP, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, particularly in Maharashtra where Supriya Sule and Sunetra Pawar contested in Baramati.

From the river islands in Assam to the Gujarat coast in the West, and from Coastal Karnataka in the south to Agra in the North, as many as 93 seats across India went to the polls in the third phase of the Lok Sabha Elections.

Voters braved the scorching heat and sometimes physical challenges to cast their vote. The elections are happening at a time when temperatures across large parts of India are touching 40 degrees Celsius.

India, along with large parts of Asia, is experiencing one of the hottest summers on record. A presiding officer at a polling booth in Bihar died from a heart attack as voting was underway. A post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of his death.

The BJP had won 71 seats out of these 93 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Election season would officially conclude for over half the Lok Sabha seats after polling ends today.

Voting took place for 25 out of the 26 seats in Gujarat. The BJP has already won the Surat seat unopposed. Prime Minister Modi cast his vote at a polling booth in Gandhinagar, where Amit Shah is the BJP candidate.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Rajiv Pathak, Editor, News18 Gujarat said, “Last time in 2019, the voting percentage was around 64%. Despite the scorching heat temperature, around 40 to 43 degrees in most parts of Gujarat, the average percentage by five o’clock was 55%. So by the end of the day, the voting percentage should be around 64%.”

He added, “BJP was struggling in some seats because of the Kshatriya agitation. But in today’s polling, we could not see much impact on the polling and first of all Gujarat always votes to make Narendra Modi Prime Minister. Narendra Modi has been Gujarat Chief Minister and if he becomes prime minister then even if he contests from Varanasi, the people of Gujarat feel that he is a Gujarati Prime Minister.”

Fourteen seats in Karnataka went to polls, mostly in the northern districts. The BJP had won all in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This is the last phase of polling in the state.

Eleven seats across Maharashtra went to polls. The BJP and the undivided Shiv Sena had won four seats each in 2019. Sitting MP Supriya Sule and Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar faced off in Baramati, the Pawar family bastion.

Syed Zafar Islam, National Spokesperson for the BJP, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, particularly in Maharashtra.

He said, “The honourable Pirme Minister has won the confidence and the admiration of the people of this great country. We are not overly concerned. Supriya ji is going to lose for sure because the man who is working on the ground is Ajit Pawar and his wife and everyone knows the kind of work they have done. The people have seen who has done the hard work on the ground and they will vote for Mrs Pawar rather than Supriya ji. So we are confident of our victory; we are not overly concerned.”

Voting also took place for both Lok Sabha seats in Goa. Polling also took place in 31 seats across Hindi heartland states—Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Voters in four seats in West Bengal and four constituencies in Assam cast their votes as well. Polling season concludes in Assam after phase 3.

Nayab Saini-led BJP govt in Haryana hangs in balance as 3 independent MLAs withdraw support

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The three MLAs—Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder—said that they have decided to extend support to the Congress during the elections.

The Nayab Saini-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s future hangs in balance as three independent Members of the Legislative Assembly have withdrawn support amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The three MLAs—Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder—reportedly said that they have decided to extend support to the Congress during the elections.

The announcement was made at a press conference held in Rohtak. Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and State Congress chief Udai Bhan were also present.

“We are withdrawing support to the government. We are extending our support to the Congress. We have taken this decision on various issues including those related to farmers,” news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted Gonder as saying.

Speaking at the presser, Bhan said that the present strength of the (90-member) Haryana Assembly is 88, of which the BJP has 40 members.

The BJP government earlier had the support of JJP MLAs and Independents, but JJP had also withdrawn support and now Independents are also leaving, he added.

“Nayab Singh Saini government is now a minority government. Saini should tender his resignation as he does not have right to stay even for a minute,” PTI quoted Bhan as saying.

The assembly polls should be held immediately, he added.

Elections to Haryana’s 10 Lok Sabha seats will be held on May 25. The Congress is contesting nine seats in Haryana, while its INDI alliance ally AAP has fielded a candidate from Kurukshetra.

Why Mark Matthews considers midcaps a better opportunity in India post-elections

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Although there are concerns over valuations in the midcap space, Matthews of Bank Julius Baer & Co believes it will still be a long term outperformer.

Mark Matthews of Bank Julius Baer & Co believes that investing in midcaps in India would be beneficial if the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP remains in power.

“I think the midcap space is the place to be if BJP do very well, because more reform means a much faster migration toward the manufacturing sector, more infrastructure, more flexibility in labor laws, more FDI coming in the country, higher value added products being made in the country,” he said in a conversation with CNBC-TV18.

While the Nifty also has good companies, Matthews pointed out that it’s not where the real manufacturing base of the country lies; it’s in the midcap space.

Although there are concerns over valuations in the midcap space, Matthews believes that it will still be a long term outperformer.

In the US, Matthews believes the S&P index, which is just 1.4% away from the the all-time high, could break above it and rally further because if the economy is strong, earnings will be strong, and ultimately, earnings are what take markets up.

“As far as interest rates go, we have to look at next week’s CPI inflation report for the month of April. The Cleveland Federal Reserve’s nowcast, which has historically been quite accurate, is basically telling us it’s going to be the same number as it was in March, which on a headline year-on-year basis is three and a half percent. That’s not good. Therefore, I don’t see a big collapse coming in Treasury yields, until we get more confirmation of softer data,” he noted.

Gulbarga Lok Sabha election: Mallikarjun Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna faces sitting BJP MP Umesh Jadhav

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Gulbarga constituency comprises eight Assembly segments, six of which are currently held by the grand old party, while the BJP and its NDA ally JD(S) have one seat each.

Gulbarga, one of the 28 parliamentary constituencies in Karnataka, is a stronghold of the Congress and is the home turf of its president Mallikarjun Kharge. A voter turnout of 57.20% was recorded.

A total 41.59% turnout was reported at 1 pm for the third phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka in 14 constituencies. The polling began at 7 am today and will end at 6 pm.

Kharge, who has won 11 elections, including nine Assembly and two Lok Sabha polls, saw a massive defeat in the 2019 general elections from Gulbarga by his follower-turned-rival Umesh Jadhav, who moved to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 2024 elections, Kharge is campaigning for his son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani. For the Congress president and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, it is a high-stakes battle as Doddamani is competing with Jadhav, who is eyeing a second consecutive term.

The Gulbarga seat comprises eight Assembly segments, six of which are currently held by the grand old party, while the BJP and its NDA ally JD(S) have one seat each.

While the Congress is aiming to wrest this seat from the BJP, banking on the development initiatives by Kharge and the state government’s guarantee schemes, the saffron party is eyeing a second consecutive term from here, heavily promoting the “Modi ki guarantee”.

In this region, Lingayats are the largest community having around five lakh voters, while Kurubas is the second largest community with around three lakh voters. Muslims and Koli/Kabbaliga have around 2.5 lakh voters each in this constituency.

Voting date

Polling for the 2024 general elections in Karnataka is being held in two phases. While 14 constituencies went for polls in the second phase on April 26, voting on the remaining 14 seats, including Gulbarga, will be conducted in the third phase on May 7. The counting of votes will be done on June 4.

During the 2019 polls, Gulbarga saw a total voter turnout of 61.18%.

List of candidates

A total of 14 candidates are in the fray for the Gulbarga seat in the 2024 elections. However, the major contest is between the BJP and Congress candidates. Here’s a look at some of the prominent names on the list.

Candidate names Party
Umesh Jadhav Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
Radhakrishna Doddamani Congress
Hucheshwara Gour  Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
Nagendra Rao Uttama Prajaakeeya Party
Rajkumar Bhartiya Bahujan Kranti Dal

2019 result

BJP’s Umesh Jadhav defeated Congress heavyweight and two-time MP Mallikarjun Kharge by more than 95,000 votes in the 2019 elections.

Candidate names Party Vote Share
Umesh Jadhav BJP 6,20,192 (52%)
Mallikarjun Kharge Congress 5,24,740 (44%)
KB Vasu BSP 10,865 (1%)
NOTA 10,487 (1%)

Karnataka Congress files complaint against BJP’s JP Nadda and others over alleged MCC violation

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In a complaint to the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer, the Congress mentioned about a video uploaded on social media platform ‘X’ by the official account of Karnataka State Bharatiya Janata Party

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Sunday May 5 sought the Election Commission to initiate action against BJP’s national president J P Nadda and other senior leaders for allegedly violating the model code of conduct by posting a video on social media intimidating members of SC and ST community not to vote for a particular candidate.

In a complaint to the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer, the Congress mentioned about a video uploaded on social media platform ‘X’ by the official account of Karnataka State Bharatiya Janata Party @bjp4karnataka which is operated by Amit Malviya, the head of IT cell on instructions of J P Nadda, BJP National President, B Y Vijayendra, BJP State President and Social Media incharge- Karnataka BJP on May 4 at 5.34 pm.

“The said video posted on social media featured animated characters of Rahul Gandhi and Siddaramaiah. In the clip, SC, ST and OBC community are portrayed as “eggs” in a nest and it also suggested Rahul Gandhi planting a big egg labelled as Muslim community. It is projected as though funds are being fed to the chick depicting the Muslim community, which then kicks out SC, ST and OBC community.”

The letter also stated that nowhere in the Congress party manifesto has it been mentioned that allocations of funds to SC, ST and OBC community will be cut and the same will be diverted to the Muslim community.

“The BJP has been falsely accusing the Congress party of including Muslims in OBC category and with such false propaganda the saffron party has been soliciting votes during Lok Sabha elections,” it alleged.

The KPCC further alleged that the video was posted on BJP’s official X handle with an aim to garner votes in Lok Sabha polls.

“It is clear that the video social media post by them is to intimidate members of SC/ST community not to vote for Congress party by projecting that funds reserved for them will be usurped by Muslims,” it said.

“The act of the accused person is to want only provocate rioting and promote enmity between different religions and is prejudicial to maintenance of harmony apart from intimidating members of SC/ST community not to vote for particular candidate and causing enmity against members of SC/ST community,” the letter added.

The KPCC has urged the poll body to initiate suitable action.
