Shardul Thakur requests BCCI to relook next year’s Ranji Trophy schedule

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Mumbai all-rounder said that the BCCI should relook next year’s Ranji Trophy schedule as playing 10 matches with just three-day gaps between games could lead to injuries to players.

Shardul Thakur’s sizzling 109 runs managed to put Mumbai in command in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Tamil Nadu. After this significant innings, Thakur extended a request to BCCI citing that the schedule that’s been run this season can put players at risk.

The Mumbai all-rounder said that the BCCI should relook next year’s Ranji Trophy schedule as playing 10 matches with just three-day gaps between games could lead to injuries to players.

“It’s difficult for players to adjust to the three-day gap between knockout matches, which was not the case earlier. It’s difficult because we are playing first-class games in (a) three days’ gap that has never happened in Ranji Trophy season ever”, Thakur told the media here after making a fine century in the semifinal against Tamil Nadu.

“You know the schedule is becoming tighter and tighter. If boys keep playing like this for two more seasons, there will be a lot of injuries across the country. Next year, they (the BCCI) have to re-look at it and give more break”, he added.

Thakur teamed up with Hardik Tamore (35) for a crucial 105-run stand for the eighth wicket and took Mumbai further ahead in the company of Kotian, adding another 79 runs for the ninth wicket. Using his blade to perfection, Thakur was adroit with his hands to pierce gaps at will and did not miss out clearing the field with disdain four times for maximums — one of which also brought up his maiden century across formats.

He said a few years back players got more days in between matches in the Ranji Trophy. “When I remember playing Ranji Trophy back in the days, good 7-8 years back, (the) first three games used to have a three-day break and then it was (a) four-day break and knockouts were played on five-day breaks. Now this year, we have seen that all the games have been played on (a) a three-day gap. It is extremely tough on domestic players to expect them to play ten games in a row with just a three-day gap if the team makes it to the finals”.

IPL is his only chance says Akash Chopra after BCCI excludes Ishan Kishan from the contract list

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Akash Chopra recently went on record saying that the IPL is the only chance for the wicket-keeper batsman to prove his worth.

Ever since BCCI excluded two ODI World Cup squad players – Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from their annual retention contract list for 2023-2024, there have been a lot of debates and opinions regarding the same. Akash Chopra recently went on record saying that the IPL is the only chance for the wicket-keeper batsman to prove his worth.

“Ishan Kishan will be hungry, as he has no central contract. This is the only thing he is playing. What else is he playing?” Chopra said in his YouTube video.

“Either he has opted not to play, or he won’t be selected now. So this is his chance. If you make the IPL your own, you have a chance of going forward. Then there is, of course, Wankhede’s flat pitch. The ball will come nicely onto the bat and go far,” Chopra added.

Former World Cup captain Kapil Dev backed BCCI’s move, calling it a much-needed step to protect marquee first-class events like the Ranji Trophy. “A few players will suffer, but let it be”, he said.

“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much-needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket”, the former captain said.

“It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket. I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also, it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he said.

Summary

Additionally, the BCCI further mandated that athletes must give precedence to playing domestic cricket at times when they are not engaged in international cricket commitments. Both Ishan and Iyer were under the scanner for refraining from turning up for Jharkhand and Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season this time around.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has dropped Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the annual player retainerships for 2023-24 amidst controversies involving the duo opting to skip first-class cricket and failing to prioritise Test matches lately.

“Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations,” an official release from the BCCI read.

Four cricketers, namely: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja were slotted in the top-tier Grade A+ slab, whereas R Ashwin, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Hardik Pandya got in the Grade A category.

Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal were put in the Grade B slot, and the Grade C grouping comprises 15 players, namely: Rinku Singh, Tilak Verma, Ruturaj Gaekwad, Shardul Thakur, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Mukesh Kumar, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh, KS Bharat, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, and Rajat Patidar.

“Additionally, athletes who meet the criteria of playing a minimum of 3 Tests or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is within the specified period will automatically be included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis. For instance, Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, having played 2 Test matches so far, will be inducted into Grade C if they participate in the Dharamsala Test Match, i.e., the 5th Test of the ongoing series against England,” the release further explained.

BCCI plans to give additional bonus to Test cricket players: Reports

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The bonus will be applied only when a player plays all Test series in a season. Currently, the BCCI pays Rs 15 lakh as match fees per Test, 6 lakh per ODI and 3 lakh for T20 internationals.

BCCI plans to roll out a new remuneration model in which players who play red-ball cricket will be awarded an additional bonus. The new payment model if applied will be implemented after the IPL season. In the wake of players opting out of Test series and Ranji trophy matches to stay fit for the IPL season, the governing body has decided to hike the match fees for Tests, thus putting a premium on the long-form game.

After wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan walked out of the South Africa series and ignored team management’s request to participate in domestic cricket, the board decided to redraft the salary structure.

According to the reports in Indian Express, , a source in the Board said: “For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract. This is to ensure that players turn out for more red-ball cricket. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket.”

The bonus will be applied only when a player plays all Test series in a season. Currently, the BCCI pays Rs 15 lakh as match fees per Test, 6 lakh per ODI and 3 lakh for T20 internationals.

After winning the England Test series in Ranchi, Rohit Sharma took a dig at players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer who are unwilling to play in Test cricket and stayed out of the Ranji Cup trophy this year.

“Test cricket is the toughest format, and if you want success and want to excel in this tough format then you need that hunger. It is very important. We will give opportunity only to players who have that hunger. You come to know easily the players who don’t have that hunger or players who don’t want to stay here. We come to know that”.

“Players who have that hunger, players who want to stay here and perform, and play in tough conditions, we will give preference to them. It is pretty simple: if you don’t have hunger, there’s no meaning in playing such players.”

Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was on Wednesday appointed as the president of the Asian Cricket Council for a third consecutive term. Shah’s extension was proposed by the Sri Lanka Cricket president Shammi Silva for the second time and the nomination was unanimously backed by all the members of the ACC at its annual general meeting in Bali.

Shah initially assumed the role in January 2021, succeeding Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan. Under Shah’s leadership, the ACC successfully organised the Asia Cup in T20 format in 2022 and in ODI format in 2023.

“I am grateful to the ACC Board for their continued trust. We must remain committed to ensuring the all-round development of the sport with a special focus on regions where it is still in its infancy. The ACC is committed to nurturing cricket across Asia,” Shah said in a release. “Under Shah’s guidance, the ACC has been instrumental in unearthing and promoting new talent in cricketing powerhouses like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka,” Silva said.

Pankaj Khimji, chairman of Oman Cricket and vice-president of the ACC, also extended congratulations on Shah’s term. “Today, stakeholders see value in investing in tournaments that the ACC conducts, and I credit him for this major transformation, which will further fuel the growth of the game in the region,” Khimji stated.

Welcoming the reappointment, Hassan said cricket in Asia will continue to prosper under Shah’s leadership, emphasising collaboration with the ACC in furthering this endeavor.

BCCI mulls T-10 franchise league based on IPL model for Tier-II Indian cities

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The BCCI is considering the T10 format for the Tier-2 cricket league, acknowledging the role the shortest version of the game could play in driving the popularity of the sport. The cricket body is currently deliberating on several issues related to the proposed league.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering introducing a Tier-2 cricket league as early as 2024, inspired by the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) introduced 15 years ago, people familiar with the developments said. BCCI secretary Jay Shah is working on a blueprint for the proposed league, and stakeholders, including potential sponsors, are giving a big thumbs up to the idea, the people said, requesting anonymity. The board has identified a window between September and October to slot the new cricket league.

The introduction of the IPL in 2008 elevated cricket’s popularity with its fast-paced T20 format. The IPL drew global talent to India, fostered a loyal fan base, and generated massive revenue for the board through sponsorships and broadcasting rights. Its success spurred other nations to start similar leagues, boosting the game’s appeal globally.

The BCCI is considering the T10 format for the Tier-2 cricket league, acknowledging the role the shortest version of the game could play in driving the popularity of the sport. The cricket body is currently deliberating on several issues related to the proposed league, including:
a) Should they go ahead with the idea of a T10 league or stick to T20 (the current proposal, though, is for T10)?
b) Should the league have an age cap for the players so that the new property doesn’t eat into the popularity of the IPL?
c) Should the franchises for this new league be sold through a separate tender process or can the existing IPL franchises be given the right of first refusal (there’s a mention of it in the existing contracts)?
d) Should the proposed tournament be played in India or have a new venue every year?
As far as the existing contracts between the BCCI and the IPL franchise owners are concerned, it is understood that the franchises have the right of first refusal to any business model that the BCCI wishes to launch that is ‘similar’ to the IPL. Those in the know say the BCCI may wish to respect that clause.

Key focus

The important call the BCCI must take is whether the new tournament should have an age bracket. “Else, what’s the guarantee that it will not begin to eat into IPL’s popularity over the years? Right now, the IPL’s biggest strengths are a) It caters to Indian prime-time like no other cricket property; b) The world’s best white-ball cricketers participate in the league; and c) Corporate India looks forward to spending big on the league at multiple levels, thus ensuring the upkeep of the property’s central revenue model.

“Whenever the BCCI decides to launch a new property, points a and c will always continue to remain the same given that cricket sells like no other product in India. It is point b that the BCCI might want to think twice about,” say those tracking developments.

Should the cricket board go ahead with these plans – and it is learned that the idea is to move ahead in all seriousness – bilateral cricket, as we know it, will change within the next two years. Marquee bilateral red-ball properties such as the Ashes, India v England, India v Australia, and even India v South Africa, among a few others, will survive while the rest of the calendar will begin to veer towards franchise cricket.

‘Cusp of inevitability’

Right now, there are cricket boards that aren’t earning enough from the sale of home bilateral rights that will allow them to sustain in the long run. A potential revenue-sharing model with the BCCI could help these boards on the financial front. “But if that happens, it could signal the death of 50-over cricket sooner than one thinks,” say those fearing the ‘inevitable’.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – looking to boost tourism – has already shown major interest in partnering with Indian cricket. A traveling tournament, looking for a host nation in the Gulf to fuel its future finances, is the kind of infusion a newly proposed property may need.

The only cricketing body that will be in the position to stand on their legs is the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) because the summer months in the UK allow them to position themselves uniquely, given the weather patterns in the lower hemisphere during those months.

Prior to ICC World Cup, BCCI’s Annual General Meeting to be held in Goa on September 25

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The 92nd Annual General Meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India will be held at W Hotel – Goa on 25th September 2023, to transact the business as per the attached agenda.

Just before the ICC World Cup, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be held in Goa on September 25. According to Cricbuzz, A notice from BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Sunday night read, “Notice is hereby given that the 92nd Annual General Meeting (hereinafter referred to as AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India will be held at W Hotel – Goa on 25th September 2023, to transact the business as per the attached agenda”.

Reportedly, Shah has shared a list of 18-point agenda for the AGM. A few that were shared by Cricbuzz are listed below:

  • Election and induction of 2 (two) representatives of the General Body into the Governing Council of the IPL.
  • Induction of 1 (one) representative of the Indian Cricketers’ Association into the Governing Council of the IPL.
  • Appointment of the Cricket Committees and Standing Committees as mentioned in Rules 26 and 25, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing Asian Games, Pooja Vastrakar bowled a sharp and incisive spell to take the Indian women’s cricket team to its maiden Asian Games final, crushing Bangladesh by eight wickets in a lopsided semifinal.

Right-arm seamer Vastrakar, who replaced Anjali Sarvani in the squad just before leaving India, had career-best figures of 4/17 in four overs as Bangladesh were bowled out for 51 in 17.5 overs their lowest-ever T20 score against the neighbours.

India will face Sri Lanka in the final on Monday. Lankans defeated defending champions Pakistan, who had won the gold at Incheon Games 2014, by six wickets in the semifinals.

Against Bangladesh, Vastrakar and her young new-ball partner Titas Sadhu (1/10 in 4 overs) extracted all the juice available from the deck as they bowled quick, with the bounce on offer also helping. Only skipper Nigar Sultana (12) was able to reach double figures for Bangladesh.
