Suvendu Adhikari: Nandigram giant killer who defeated Didi

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Suvendu Adhikari, the former close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee, defeated her in a high-stakes electoral battle.

Suvendu Adhikari, the former close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief Mamata Banerjee, defeated his mentor in the closely watched battle for Nandigram in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Adhikari switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020, after ending a two-decade relationship with TMC. Addressing an election rally ahead of the Assembly polls, Adhikari had said that he would “defeat her or quit politics”.

“If I am fielded by my party from Nandigram, I will defeat her by a margin of at least 50,000 votes or I will quit politics,” he had said. The electoral battle was being considered a matter of prestige for Banerjee and a tryst with history for Suvendu.

Nandigram assumes significance for Banerjee as it was her road to chief ministership in 2011. It was one of the places of TMC’s anti-land acquisition protest, while the other being Singur. Around 14 villagers were killed in police firing in 2007 when they were protesting against land acquisition for a chemical hub of Indonesian firm Salim Group.

Banerjee, then the opposition TMC leader, had spearheaded a movement against the Left Front government’s acquisition of arable land in Nandigram and Singur for industrialisation.

Her party reaped rich dividends from the agitations, winning 50 percent of the panchayat seats in 2008, bagging 19 Lok Sabha seats in 2009 and ending the 34-year-long Left Front rule in the state in 2011.

Over the last few months, the TMC supremo and Suvendu have been involved in a bitter war of words, taking swipes at each other over the 2007 Nandigram massacre.

After TMC’s massive win in West Bengal elections, Prashant Kishor ‘quitting this space’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Mincing no words, Kishor hit out at the Election Commission saying it has been working as an extension of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Political strategist Prashant Kishor on Sunday said that he is “quitting this space” and he will not strategise for parties anymore. The remarks came even as the results are trickling in for West Bengal polls and Trinamool Congress is clear of a hat-trick. He is the man behind the TMC’s spectacular win in the state.

“I have been thinking of quitting for too long and was looking for an opportunity, Bengal gave me that chance,” he said in an interview with CNN-News18.

On TMC’s win, Kishor said that people wanted to get Mamata Banerjee one more and it would be very difficult to tell “why we have won so big”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party campaign was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state witnessed Union Ministers campaigning in the state for months. But that could not change the party’s fortune either. “Just because central ministers come and campaign does not guarantee a win. They had huge resources, but that is not enough to win elections,” he said.

He added that the BJP’s narrative was the same as it was in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and there was nothing positive in it. “The insider-outsider debate is not a factor. You need to have many things to go right for you to win a state as big as West Bengal. The fight was between Didi (Mamata) and Modi. It is difficult to say which of our moves paid off the best, but we wanted to convey to the people that they should vote for Bengal’s daughter,” he said.

Mincing no words, Kishor hit out at the Election Commission saying it has been working as an extension of Bharatiya Janata Party.

“I have never seen a more partial Election Commission. It did everything to help BJP. From allowing the use of religion by BJP to scheduling poll and bending rules, the EC did everything to aid the saffron party,” Kishor said.

Also, his prediction for the BJP turned out to be true in this election.

“For all the hype AMPLIFIED by a section of supportive media, in reality BJP will struggle to CROSS DOUBLE DIGITS in West Bengal. PS: Please save this tweet and if BJP does any better I must quit this space!” Kishor has tweeted on December 21, 2020

Prashant had earlier worked with the BJP in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in 2016 state polls, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in 2017 state polls, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy in 2019 state polls, and Shiv Sena in 2019 state polls.

Summary

The ruling TMC looks set to retain power in West Bengal with its candidates leading in 201 of the state’s 292 constituencies that went to polls against BJP’s 82, according to the trends available for 287 seats on the Election Commission website at 3 pm.

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday credited Mamata Banerjee for the TMC’s astounding performance in the Bengal elections and said his party would introspect the poll results. Earlier in the day, he had claimed that initial trends were not the real indicators of the final outcome, and exuded confidence that his party will win the elections.

Vijayvargiya, who is also the BJP’s Bengal minder, also said that he has received a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who enquired about the party’s poor show. The senior BJP leader stated that he was shocked to see BJP MPs Babul Supriyo and Locket Chatterjee trailing.

”The TMC won because of Mamata Banerjee. It seems people have chosen Didi. We will introspect what went wrong, whether it was organisational issues, lack of face, insider-outsider debate. We will see what went wrong,” he said.
