Summary

SigTuple creates Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions to automate healthcare screening.

Bengaluru-based health technology start-up SigTuple has been selected among the top 10 finalists to participate in Google’s Demo Day Asia, scheduled to take place in Shanghai in September.

SigTuple creates Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions to automate healthcare screening.

It has built intelligent screening solutions to aid diagnosis through AI-powered analysis of visual medical data.

The start-up also has an AI platform called Manthana, which helps analyze visual medical data efficiently.

Manthana has enabled the company to work on five high-volume screening processes — analysis of peripheral blood smears, urine microscopy, semen, fundus and OCT scans and chest X-rays.

“Out of the 305 qualifying applications, the 10 finalists will take the final stage at Demo Day Asia,” said Michael Kim, partnerships manager, Google for Entrepreneurs, in a blog post on Wednesday.

Another start-up in the top 10 is Marham from Pakistan. It is a healthcare platform that helps people search, book appointments, and consult with doctors online.

“The start-ups that impress could come home with funding from investors and up to $100,000 in Google Cloud Platform credits,” read the blog post.

Representatives from corporates like Reliance Jio, Flipkart, Airtel, Amazon, Wipro and Microsoft Ventures and IIT Hyderabad deliberated on the various facets of AI, ranging from its evolution to create new revenue streams to the ethical component and its impact on the people worldwide.

Global chip maker Intel trained 99,000 developers, students and professors in Artificial Intelligence (AI) since April 2017 for ready talent in India, said the US-based firm on Wednesday.

“We have trained over 99,000 developers, students and professors since April 2017 for making AI-ready talent available in the country,” said Intel India in a statement here.

Philips, Mphasis and arya.ai collaborated with Intel as partners and customers to power AI solutions on its architecture.

To mark the occasion, the semi-conductor firm held a developers conference in this tech hub where 500 developers, including experts in data science, machine learning, application development and research participated.

“The conference served as a platform to share updates on real-world applications of AI that can benefit businesses and people,a said the statement.

Intel will also speed up accessibility of AI tools across industries and drive the next wave of computing by investing in developer education.

“Though we had committed to train 15,000 developers, students, and professors in AI initially through training and workshops, we exceeded the target over seven-fold by roping in many of them from 100 organisations,” said Intel India Managing Director Prakash Mallya.

Intel India is also working with Philips and Mphasis to deploy its AI portfolio in the local ecosystem.

“The conference in India is a testament to our local collaborations for developing AI technology, and growing the ecosystem” added Gadi Singer, Intel Vice President for AI.

A set of Indian firms demonstrated how they are using AI to further their business and shape the end-user experience.

Their insights and solutions reflect the great potential that India has for AI technology development.

Intel will also engage AI developers and startups in India through its Academy and AI builders’ programme.

US senators ask Sundar Pichai about Google’s China search engine

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to the letter, Google’s project is “deeply troubling and risks making Google complicit in human rights abuses” in China.

Six US senators have written to Google chief executive officer Sundar Pichai asking about the tech giant’s reported plan to create a censored Chinese version of its search engine.

“What has changed since 2010 to make Google comfortable cooperating with the rigorous censorship regime in China?” asked the senators, including Florida Republican Marco Rubio, Fortune reported on Sunday.

According to the letter, Google’s project is “deeply troubling and risks making Google complicit in human rights abuses” in China.

Google in 2010 “refused to comply with Chinese government censorship requirements on ethical grounds, and essentially abandoned the market,” said the report.

Media reports surfaced last week that Google is planning a censored search engine for China.

According to The Information, the company is also developing a news-aggregation app for use in China that will comply with the country’s censorship laws.

Google was yet to officially confirm or deny the search engine project.

The senators asked whether the agreement was “connected in any way with (Google’s) efforts to enter the Chinese market via the custom search app”.

The letter also asked “which ‘blacklist’ of censored searches and websites” Google would use in a Chinese search product.

The state-owned China Securities Daily, however, last week refuted the report that Google is building a search engine for China.

China is home to 772 million Internet users, the biggest online community in the world.

Google, which has hundreds of people working in China, has launched its Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab in the country.

Challenges to AI adoption may pose risk to business, says Microsoft

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

These deficiencies could undermine the decisions, predictions, or analysis AI applications produce, subjecting the company to competitive harm, legal liability, and brand or reputational harm.

In a message to investors, Microsoft has said that the challenges to adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions by customers as well as changes to trade policy or agreements as a result of populism, protectionism or economic nationalism may pose a risk to its businesses.

In a regulatory filing on Friday, Microsoft said that the ability to convert data into AI drives its competitive advantage, but issues in the use of AI in its offerings may result in reputational harm or liability.

The Redmond, Washington-headquartered tech giant, which does business in 200 countries, said inappropriate or controversial data practices by Microsoft or others could impair the acceptance of AI solutions.

These deficiencies could undermine the decisions, predictions, or analysis AI applications produce, subjecting the company to competitive harm, legal liability, and brand or reputational harm.

It also pointed out that some AI scenarios present ethical issues ranging from privacy, human rights, employment or other social issues.

Moreover, the proliferation of social media may increase the likelihood, speed, and magnitude of negative brand events, it added.

The tech giant also warned how emerging nationalist trends in specific countries may significantly alter the global trade environment.

Google to place AI-powered virtual agents in call centres

Summary

Google has announced it is working with several partners like Cisco and Genesys to build Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that will replace some of the work in call centres.

Google has announced it is working with several partners like Cisco and Genesys to build Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that will replace some of the work in call centres.

The software is called “Contact Center AI” which will install “virtual agents” that will be the first to pick up the phone when a customer connects to a call centre.

“When the customer asks something that the AI cannot do, it will automatically forward the call to a human,” said Fei-Fei Li, Chief Scientist at Google, during the Cloud Next conference on Tuesday.

“Our true goal is to empower a contact centre’s human agents, as well as the customers that rely on them.

“To do this, we built a complete solution with our partners that includes Dialogflow Enterprise Edition, as well as additional capabilities that are particularly useful for contact centres,” Li added.

In this AI technology, when a call is placed, the caller is immediately greeted by a Virtual Agent that answers questions and fulfills tasks all on its own.

When a caller’s needs surpass the Virtual Agent, it transitions to a human representative.

“From there, the system shifts to a supporting role whereby Contact Centre AI’s Agent Assist system supports the conversation and provides the agent with relevant information,” Google said.

The result is a flexible solution that adapts to the needs of each and every call, and provides a seamless experience between live and virtual agents, playing as big or as small a role as the situation demands.

“It’s compliant with our data privacy and governance policies, and it does it all without infrastructure, on a platform that scales as much or as little as you need,” Li noted.

“AI is empowerment, and we want to democratise that power for everyone and every business — from retail to agriculture, education to health care,” she added.

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The selected startups will be part of a four-month intensive programme focused on transformative and technology-driven ideas to create solutions for today’s rapidly changing retail environment.

US-based retailer Target Corporation on Tuesday selected six Indian startups as part of its “Accelerator Programme” that gives companies the opportunity to implement their solutions in real-world scenarios and measure the results in real time.

The selected startups will be part of a four-month intensive programme focused on transformative and technology-driven ideas to create solutions for today’s rapidly changing retail environment, the company said in a statement.

The startups selected will work on developing customised retail solutions using emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), computer vision, natural language processing and analytics, it added.

These startups will have access to Target mentors, tools, resources and operational support, as well as workspace at Target’s Bengaluru offices.

“Over the last couple of years, India has become a superpower driving innovation in the retail sector across the globe,” said Rakesh Mishra, Vice President of Marketing at Target India.

The Target Accelerator Programme was launched in December 2013.

The selected startups for the sixth batch of the programme are Kenome, Point105-AR, Quilt.ai, Moodboard, Eder.ai and StyleDod.

Kenome uses AI to help enterprises make sense of dark data using deep learning, natural language processing and knowledge graphs.

Point105-AR provides a holistic 3D asset management solution for augmented reality experiences.

Quilt.ai uses AI tools to build a large research and action platform.

Moodboard provides a tool that leverages AI to provide insights on product performance trends that aid in future product design.

Eder.ai offers a distributed computing platform with Blockchain-grade encryption which enables secure AI to help scale research and unearth new intelligence.

StyleDod provides a tool that automatically converts floorplans into 3D designed rooms, fully furnished with merchandisable products.

To date, 30 startups have graduated from the programme and worked with Target teams, the company said.

AI-first approach will transform our lives, says Satya Nadella

Summary

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been “pretty stunning” but what the humanity is going to see soon will be even more profound, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stressed.

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been “pretty stunning” but what the humanity is going to see soon will be even more profound, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stressed.

Addressing thousands of partners at the ‘Microsoft Inspire’ event on Wednesday, Nadella said that the potential is for us to be able to turn every industry into an AI-first industry, be it healthcare or agriculture.

“We want to be able to make sure that they can take their data, in a secure, privacy-preserving way, and can work that into AI capabilities,” he told the gathering.

“As we look forward, the opportunity for us to serve our customers in this new era of the Intelligent Cloud and the Intelligent Edge is far greater,” Nadella said.

According to him, Microsoft is going to infuse everything with AI.

“It’s going to have perception capability, language capability and autonomy that’s going to be built into the applications going forward.

“Autonomy is not just about a few self-driving projects. This is about autonomy everywhere,” the Microsoft CEO added.

On its Azure Cloud offerings, Nadella said the computing needs will go far beyond the data centre.

“We are going to take Azure to Azure Stack, to Azure IoT Edge and to Azure Sphere. This is a ubiquitous, distributed computing fabric,” he noted.

Nadella said that Microsoft 365 will help customers have people-centred experiences rather than device-centred experiences.

The tech giant which has touched $800 billion valuation for the first time, was scheduled to release its quarterly results late on Thursday.
