Hundred centrally-protected monuments, including UNESCO world heritage sites spread across the country, will be lit up for a week and bear the G20 logo starting December 1 when India will assume the Presidency of the influential group, officials said on Wednesday.

Humayun’s Tomb and Purana Quila in Delhi to Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat, and Konark Sun Temple in Odisha to Sher Shah Suri’s Tomb in Bihar, are on the list of these 100 sites.

India will assume the yearlong Presidency of G20 on December 1. More than 200 meetings will be held in India across 55 locations.

The first meeting of G20 will be held in the first week of December in Udaipur when the G20 Sherpa meet will take place, officials earlier said.

On Wednesday, a senior official said 100 ASI sites, including those listed under UNESCO, will be lit up for a week.

All illuminated heritage structures shall “highlight the G20 logo over the monument,” he said.

“The size of the logo projected on the monuments will depend on the nature and design of the site,” the official said.

“At Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fathepur Sikri — all three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the logo will be projected on a unipole installed near the sites,” he added.

There are 40 cultural and natural sites in total in India which have UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and most of the cultural sites are under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

“The G20 Presidency shall be held by India from December 1 onwards for one year term. High-level dignitaries and delegates shall be visiting various centrally-protected monuments. lt has been decided by the Government of lndia to utilise this opportunity to highlight our monuments as part of the brand and and publicity plan of G20 at ASI protected monuments and sites with special focus on sites in the UNESCO World Heritage list,” reads a memorandum issued recently by the ASI.

Other sites which will be illuminated include Metcalfe Hall and Currency Building in Kolkata, Nalanda university ruins and ancient structures and other monuments at Rajgir in Bihar, Basilica of Bom Jesus and Church of Lady of Rosary in Goa, Tipu Sultan’s Palace and the Gol Gumbaz in Karnataka, and Sanchi Buddhist monuments and Gwalior Fort in Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Wednesday distributed skill training certificates to many taxi, cab and coach drivers under a tourism awareness programme hosted by the Tourism Ministry.

“India is presiding over the G20 summit for the next year from December 1. Emerging economies of the world are participating in this summit. More than 200 meetings will be held in more than 55 different places during this summit. People of the world are eager to see India, they are not just tourists for us, but also influencers of India. I think this training programme before the G20 summit will act as a milestone in the development of Indian tourism,” he said.

In a statement, the Tourism Ministry said 299 candidates attended the training, out of them, 165 are male and 134 are female beneficiaries.

Candidates have been given inputs on soft skills, behavioural skills, personal and workplace hygiene, places of tourist importance in Delhi, first aid, COVID-19 protocols, foreign language, etc. via theoretical as well as practical means during the training, it said.

Candidates who successfully completed the course are provided with a stipend of Rs 300 per day under the scheme, it added.

FIFA World Cup 2022, Costa Rica vs Germany: Die Mannschaft take on Costa Rica in a do-or-die match

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Football watchers and preachers across the globe expected Germany to sail through the group stage with ease but Die Mannschaft have been caught on turbulent tides in Group E as they find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table with a single point after two games. The four-time winners will be hanging by a thread when they face Costa Rica in the penultimate game of Group E of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium on Friday, December 02. Only a win will present Germany with a chance to qualify for the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Costa Rica are also in contention for a last-16 spot. Los Ticos could also go through with a draw, but only if Japan loses in the other match against Spain.

In the previous edition of the World Cup, Costa Rica were eliminated in the group stage. They have reached the quarterfinals once in five attempts, and that happened not so long ago, in 2014. The start of the campaign for Los Ticos was a disastrous one as they suffered their joint-biggest defeat at the grandest stage against Spain. La Roja smashed seven past Costa Rica as they completely dominated the game, disallowing Los Ticos to even have a shot at goal. Spain completed the game, completing 978/1045 passes compared to Costa Rica’s 165/230 passes.

Tensions were high as Costa Rica were supposed to bounce back against a Japanese side that had caused one of the biggest upsets of the 2022 World Cup by defeating Germany in the opening game. However, Los Ticos did not let past results and statistics bother them as they took to the pitch and defeated Japan by a single goal to clinch their first three points of the tournament. It was goalless till the 80th minute, and just when it looked like the spoils would be shared, right-back Keysher Fuller struck in the 81st minute, and Costa Rica held on to secure their first win of the campaign.

Costa Rica coach Luis Suarez will be without defender Francisco Calvo who will serve his suspension against Germany. It will be a blow for Los Ticos as Calvo was decent in defence against Japan. Juan Pablo Vargas or Daniel Chacon could be included in the starting lineup as Calvo’s replacement.

The Germans are looking to avoid their second successive group stage exit from the World Cup. Touted as one of the favourites to win the golden trophy this time around, it has been shocking for the football universe to see Germany at the bottom of the table. An Ilkay Gundogan penalty gave Die Mannschaft the lead in their opening game against Japan. The four-time champions led till the final quarter before two goals in the 75th and 83rd minute caught Germany napping and turned the game on its head.

The second game was a mega clash with giants Spain. The deadlock was intact at the break but substitute Alvaro Morata put La Roja in the lead two minutes past the hour mark. Elimination was staring Die Mannschaft in the eye till the 83rd minute when substitute Niclas Fullkrug rescued a point for the Germans and kept their Round of 16 hopes alive. Jamal Musiala played a big part in his side’s recovery in the hard-fought draw against Spain.

Germany coach Hansi Flick will be looking at the fitness levels of Leon Goretzka, David Raum, and Thilo Kehrer. Apparently, the trio has trained and could be available for selection in the crucial tie against Costa Rica. Flick will be hoping to replicate the 2006 World Cup result in the next game. Germany defeated Costa Rica 4-2 on that day in the World Cup.

Team News: Costa Rica will be without the services of defender Francisco Calvo who will serve his suspension in the upcoming game. Germany will be hoping that Leon Goretzka, David Raum, and Thilo Kehrer are fit.

Experts explain where Bitcoin could go from here

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Bitcoin (BTC) was the first-ever cryptocurrency, and it was introduced to audiences in 2009. Despite hundreds of other altcoins entering the market since then, BTC still holds the top position as the highest-valued cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin (BTC) was the first-ever cryptocurrency, and it was introduced to audiences in 2009. Despite hundreds of other altcoins entering the market since then, BTC still holds the top position as the highest-valued cryptocurrency.

However, the global crypto industry has been going through a rough spot since the beginning of 2022. Bears have taken over the market, and the bitter crypto winter still rages on. Although price volatility in crypto is nothing new, the ongoing bearish trends have seriously impacted investor sentiments.

Moreover, the collapse of the FTX crypto exchange caught the industry off guard and dealt hefty blows to several crypto firms. The meltdown was also followed by plummeting crypto prices in a market already reeling under the effects of the recession.

Also read: Revealed: How football fan tokens are performing through the FIFA World Cup

In a time like this, the only question running through the minds of retail and long-term investors is what lies ahead for Bitcoin. Tag along to find out what the experts think.

Bitcoin, its current state of turmoil and where it can go from here

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $16,870. That’s nearly 75 percent lower than its all-time high of $67,000 in Nov 2021. However, some experts predict the prices could plummet even lower. For instance, after the FTX collapse, another prominent crypto exchange, Gemini, warned users that it could face bankruptcy if it did not raise funds quickly.

In response to the news, Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of the trading platform BitMex, took to Twitter to reveal his Bitcoin prediction. “Well, that’s the end of that. Now all my friends in restructuring will be asking if I know anyone at Genesis, I can connect them with. $BTC = $10k,” he said in a Nov 22 tweet.

Prominent fund manager and co-founder of Mobius Capital Partners LLP, Mark Mobius, seemed to agree with Hayes. In a Nov 28 interview with Bloomberg, Mobius said that he sees BTC going all the way to $10,000 and said he would refrain from investing in digital assets, saying “it’s too dangerous.”

However, BTC has shown strong resilience in the last few days, staying above the $16,000 mark despite the BlockFi bankruptcy and the unrest in China. Moreover, the crypto market has shown signs of a resurgence recently. For instance, at the time of writing, Bitcoin was up 2.31 percent over the last 24 hours.

Founder and CEO of trading firm Eight, Michaël van de Poppe, believes that this could create a higher low (HL), and BTC could break out from there. “After this bounce, as we’ve created a HL on #Bitcoin and aiming at resistance again. Taking out the range between $16.5-16.8K would trigger continuation towards $18K,” van de Poppe said in a tweet yesterday.

Looking further into the future

Bitcoin has had a rough start this year. But despite low market confidence in BTC, some experts are still hoping that the cryptocurrency will reach greater heights in the coming years and that this is just a passing phase.

For instance, the data analytics firm, Finder, asked a panel of 50+ fintech specialists for their BTC predictions. Per the panel, BTC would touch $21,350 by the end of the year before reaching nearly $80,000 by 2025. Another analysis conducted by the Deutsche Bank pointed out that there is a high possibility that Bitcoin will rise to around $28,000 by the end of 2023.

Mike McGlone, a commodity strategist who works for Bloomberg, remains even more bullish on Bitcoin’s long-term price movements. He thinks BTC will hit $100,000 by 2025 once the bearish trend ends and the market starts recovering. McGlone is not alone. Deutsche Bank conducted a study with a panel of prominent bitcoin investors, a quarter of whom firmly believed the cryptocurrency would hit the $100,000 mark in the next five years.

Conclusion

Volatility is the only constant thing in crypto. Therefore, investors should be cautious while allocating their portfolios. However, given the current geopolitical factors, the volatility in the crypto market can be expected to continue for a while.

In time, most people expect Bitcoin to rise, given its limited supply and the ever-present demand from new users, retail investors and institutional buyers. However, the key is to do your own thorough research and only invest what you can afford to lose.

What is zombie virus and why is Twitter buzzing about it?

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The 48,000-year-old zombie virus had buried under frozen lake in Russia, and it was unearthed by scientists from the French National Centre for Scientific Researchers.

Scientists have revived a 48,000-year-old ‘zombie virus’ found in the permafrost region of Siberia, Russia. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the news of a virus stirs panic and triggers memes on Twitter. To no one’s surprise, the zombie virus quickly emerged as a Twitter trend.

The zombie virus had buried under frozen lake in Russia, and it was unearthed by scientists from the French National Centre for Scientific Researchers. They found over a dozen of archaic viruses from the Siberian permafrost and the oldest of them, dubbed as Pandoravirus yedoma, is known to be 48,500 years old.

Although the threat from these viruses can’t be estimated currently, scientists have found that these viruses remain infectious despite being dormant for hundreds of millennia.

According to the European team of researchers who found the viruses, it is likely that ancient permafrost will release these unknown viruses after it thaws due to increasing global warming. People are expected to populate these areas after they become habitable which is when there may be a threat of new viruses infecting life forms.

Even though the revelation stirred panic at first, it soon turned into a memefest on Twitter. Many creative users came up with hilarious memes as they thought the world is nearing its end with another COVID like virus.

Users expressed that the joy of moving past the COVID-19 pandemic has been cut short.

Other creative users drew used the classic Endgame meme to signal humanity’s end.

While binge watchers related to the news in their own way by calling it the next episode of the viral saga.

Enthusiasts of zombie movies geared up to recreate the apocalypse scene.

One creative user even tried to express how God must be feeling.

While the COVID-19 pandemic and zombie apocalypse were the trending themes, the pain of medical students wasn’t ignored either.

India, Vietnam benefit from flexible supply chain set-up, says DHL Express CEO

India, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand are emerging as strong backups for those diversifying their supply chains says John Pearson, the Global CEO of logistics giant DHL Express. But he also cautions against over-estimating the shift out of China.

Pearson said, “The Global Trade Atlas, which we did as a one off report is extremely positive. In fact, India, Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand came out as sort of clear winners from the GLOBAL TRADE ATLAS in terms of benefiting from global trade, perhaps benefiting from somewhat of a China Plus One strategy, and really driving trade in Southeast Asia, and Asia Pacific as a whole.”

He added, “Changing the primary, secondary or tertiary supply chain partners is actually a very complex thing. So people think they may want to depend less on China. But changing here or there doesn’t necessarily lower that level of dependency. What we are seeing, though, is that the Global Trade Atlas, very clearly said, is that India, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, some of these countries are strong beneficiaries of a more flexible and backup oriented supply chain setup, as opposed to just depending on China. So that is happening and we can see our volume growth out of those markets is extremely strong.”

“Now, it’s not about coming here to solve a crisis. It’s coming here to get closer to the team and figure out how we can partner together to make the Indian market even more successful for the Body Shop,” he said.

Talking about the split between offline and online, the CEO said, “Broadly speaking, we imagined that we are going to land at somewhere in the range of 75-25, maybe 80-20 that kind of split between physical stores and online. It is important, not to underplay that whilst I am a lover of retail, I am also a realist and a pragmatist, right? We have a whole bunch of customers who enjoy shopping online.”

It comes with a medal, a scroll of honour, and a monetary award of Rs. 25 lakh. The Arjuna award comes with a 15 lakh rupee cash reward, a bronze statue, and a scroll of honour.

President Droupadi Murmu recognised more than 25 exceptional Indian athletes at the National Sports Awards 2022 event on Wednesday. Achanta Sharath Kamal, the veteran table tennis player, was bestowed with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award, the highest honour awarded to a sportsperson in India, during the occasion that took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

While Sharath was the only sportsperson to get the Khel Ratna award, 25 other athletes, including track and field athletes Eldhose Paul and Avinash Sable, shuttlers Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy, and female boxer Nikhat Zareen, were conferred with the Arjuna Award.

The event is customarily conducted on August 29 to recognise the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. However, the event was held on a different day last year.

Sharath, who received his Khel Ratna award amid overwhelming applause from the distinguished guests present at the Durbar Hall, was the highlight of the programme.
