Coriander prices skyrocket but relief may come soon

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The one thing that is constant across all markets in India is customers asking for free dhaniya and mirchi (coriander leaves and green chilli) while buying vegetables in bulk, according to customers, this has now become an issue.“I also know the prices are so high so I myself have stopped asking it for free because then it gets into a whole debate with the vendor and it gets embarrassing,” said 34-year-old, Pushpa Chouhan a resident from Block A, Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Aajkal free main paani nahi milta, aur aapko ye Rs 160/200 per kilo ka dhaniya chaiye (people don’t even give water for free, and you want Rs 160/200 per kg green coriander)?”, quipped Shankar Chowdhury, a local vegetable vendor, in Noida’s Sector 34 in Uttar Pradesh.

The price of the most used herb in Indian kitchens has skyrocketed this summer. Chowdhury, who sources his vegetables from the Azadpur Sabzi Mandi in Delhi, said that in September, the wholesale price at the mandi ranged from Rs 100-120 per kg.

According to data by Commodity online and Commodity insights (websites to check mandi price), coriander leaves are currently selling at an average price of Rs 8,000 per quintal (Rs 80 per kg) at the Azadpur Mandi.

The prices have been skyrocketing since March due to the uneven monsoon (heavy monsoon in Rajasthan, the country’s largest coriander producer) and low production.

Last year in July, the spot prices for coriander in Kota (the biggest market for coriander in India) stood at Rs 6,000 per quintal, while this year, the prices touched Rs 10,000 per quintal, according to data by Agriwatch.

This year at Kota Mandi, total coriander supply from March 1 to August 19 was reported at 6,724 MT compared to 7,500 MT during the same period last year, down by 10.35 percent in the wake of lower production, as per a report by Agriwatch. (1MT =10 quintal)

According to official data by the Spices Board of India, the area per hectare for sowing coriander for 2021-2022 is estimated to be 6,31,698 hectares while the production is estimated to be at 8,00,742 tonnes. The production this year is estimated to go down by 10.3 percent.

‘Embarrassed to ask for free dhaniya’

For many Indians, especially those from the north, vegetable shopping ends with vendors pushing a handful of free and fresh coriander bunches and chillies in bags as a ‘bonus’. But this summer, this was rare.

“The herb is so costly these days, I have stopped asking for free dhaniya. If you do, you will have to get into a debate with the vendor, and it gets embarrassing,” said 34-year-old Pushpa Chouhan, a Noida resident.

Many vendors pointed out that since May, they stopped giving coriander leaves as the buying rate from mandi increased.

“In February-March, I used to give a bundle for free when people bought vegetables in bulk, as it was at Rs 20-30 per kilo. Now, if they ask, I just give 2 or 3 strands as it feels weird to say no to the customer,” said Santosh Kumar Jaiswal, another vendor in Noida.

According to Shivraj Singh Dhakkad, a wholesale trader from Guna, Madhya Pradesh, the mandi has not received much supply from farmers and the markets in Rajasthan, resulting in the price going up.

How much are the farmers getting?

“I am getting Rs 60-80 per kg from the mandi. The maximum this summer was Rs 100,” said Richa Singh, owner of Bheemraj Farms, Jaipur.

Singh said the difference in what the farmer gets, what mandi sells, and what the retail price stands at comes because of losses incurred by mandi sellers and retail owners as coriander is a perishable crop and needs to be sold within a maximum of a week on buying.

Coriander is grown as a Rabi season crop in the north and central parts of India, with sowing being done between the middle of October and the middle of November. It takes approximately 100 days for maturity, though harvesting for green leaves starts earlier. So, usually, during summer, crop production goes low.

“This year due to late monsoon and also heavy monsoon in Rajasthan not only damaged the crop but also caused problems with transportation which was also aided by a hike in petrol and diesel prices causing the spike in prices,” said Jain.

Can consumers expect prices to go down?

According to experts, the prices will come down soon with the monsoon going away. “We have already seen them going down in different parts. It has started to swing between Rs 60 and Rs 100 per kg in Rajasthan. So, with monsoon going away, prices will go down,” added Jain.

As coriander is also used for producing and retailing dry coriander seeds and powder, we have seen the prices in total surge due to monsoon, shortage of the commodity, and international demand. “Still, it will start correcting from the highs now,” said agri commodities expert Manoj Kumar Jain.

Jain said prices are expected to go down as there is a possibility that sowing will increase.

Russia temporarily stops gas flow to Europe through Nord Stream 1

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to Gazprom, the only remaining turbine, which is located at the Portovaya compressor station, needs maintenance

In an advance announcement, Russia’s Gazprom temporarily suspended the supply of natural gas through a significant pipeline from Russia to Europe early on Wednesday.

The Russian state-controlled energy giant said earlier this month that it would cut the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline until Saturday for what it says is a three-day pause for routine maintenance at a compressor station.

According to Gazprom, the only remaining turbine, which is located at the Portovaya compressor station, needs maintenance. The head of Germany’s Federal Network Agency, Klaus Mueller, has said that the maintenance work is technically incomprehensible and he considers it a way of punishing Germany for siding with Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

ALSO READ: India needs to overcome the job challenge to become a higher-income country

Gazprom has repeatedly reduced the flow of gas through Nord Stream 1 claiming technical issues such as equipment repairs. Germany calls these cuts a political move to sow uncertainty and push up prices amid the war in Ukraine.

Russia has also reduced the flow of gas to other European countries which have sided with Ukraine in the war.

Russia recently has accounted for about a third of Germany’s gas supplies. The government said last week that the drop in gas flows confirmed that Germany can’t rely on Russian deliveries, announcing that it would step up its gas storage requirements and take further measures to conserve supplies.

Auto sector in cruise control ahead of festive season, suggests report

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“Rural demand is expected to be driven by normal monsoon and government subsidies. We expect two-wheeler volumes to recover, especially in the entry and executive motorcycle segment, which has been sluggish lately and has started showing improvement in the previous months,” said Sharekhan.

The Festive season is going to continue the growth momentum for the auto sector in India, as per a report by brokerage firm Sharekhan. The report states that positive sentiments and exciting new launches will keep growth momentum in the two-wheeler and personal vehicle (two- and four-wheelers) segments.

“Rural demand is expected to be driven by normal monsoon and government subsidies. We expect two-wheeler volumes to recover, especially in the entry and executive motorcycle segment, which has been sluggish lately and has started showing improvement in the previous months,” said Sharekhan.

The report further added that new launches in the personal vehicle and two-wheeler segments are likely to spark consumer excitement in the medium term.

“We expect robust recovery in CV sales, led by increasing economic activity and improving sentiments of fleet owners at a lower cost of ownership under BS-VI vehicles and a low base. Buses and 3Ws are also expected to see recovery,” added the brokerage firm.

Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) sales will remain at healthy levels, driven by improving economic and infrastructure activities. Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) are expected to do well because of the surge in e-commerce and better last-mile connectivity. Buses and three-wheelers (3W) are also expected to see recovery, driven by reopening of schools and offices and easing of mobility restrictions.

Talking about commercial vehicles, Umesh Revankar, VC and MD of Shriram Transport Finance Company said, “Demand from M&HCV is predominantly coming from the infrastructure development because wherever the application is for the infrastructure the demand is very high.”

How are companies expected to perform?

The brokerage firm noted that in the two-wheeler segment, Hero MotoCorp is expected to report sales of 4.8 lakh units in August 2022, an increase of 5.8 percent from the corresponding period a year ago, aided by recovery in rural markets.

While TVS Motors is expected to report wholesale movement of 3.3 lakh units, seeing a growth of 12.4 percent, Bajaj Auto’s monthly sales are expected to be around 3.6 lakh units, down by 2.5 percent from August 2021.

The brokerage firm expects Royal Enfield (RE) to sell 67,000 units in the month.

In the three-wheeler segment, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor are expected to see strong recovery in August 2022.

Maruti Suzuki’s monthly sales are expected at 1.6 lakh units up by 24.1 percent from the corresponding period a year ago while Tata Motors is expected to deliver 48,000 units, showing a growth of 71.3 percent from August 2021 in the personal vehicle segment.

M&M and Escorts tractor sales are expected to report muted growth on a sequential basis due to seasonality and a high base. While in the commercial vehicle segment Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, are expected to show a growth in sales in August 2022, by 14.7 percent and 48 percent respectively, and Eicher Motors sales are expected to decline by 14.5 percent from the corresponding period a year ago.

The S&P BSE Auto index traded green in the last trading session surging 762.04 points or 2.5 percent at 30,334.18. TVS Motors closed up at 2.98 percent, Bajaj Auto closed at 1.3 percent up and Hero Moto Corp closed 0.5 percent in the green on the BSE on Tuesday.

In the trading session on Tuesday, Maruti Suzuki closed at Rs 9,051, up 2.45 percentl Tata Motors climbed over 3.8 percent and closed at Rs 471; M&M, Escorts Kubota and Eicher Motors closed at over 2 percent  in the green on the BSE. While Ashok Leyland settled at Rs 154, climbing 3.98 percent.

The focus of both the government and RBI is to tame inflation, which has remained above the RBI’s tolerance level of 6 per cent since January this year. Besides, the falling rupee hovering around 80 per dollar is adding pressure to inflation. The recent pronouncement of Fed chairman Jerome Powell to brace for more large interest rate hikes in coming months to rein in inflation will have implications for other currencies of the world, including the rupee.

Trade setup for Sept 1: Nifty50 may extend pullback all the way to 17,900 soon

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Trade setup for Thursday, September 1: The Nifty50 looks set to continue the current move to 17,900 this week, say experts. Here’s what the technical charts suggest.

Indian equity benchmarks made a comeback on Tuesday, recovering from all of the previous day’s losses caused by a global sell-off following the Fed Chair’s hawkish tone at the annual Jackson Hole symposium last week. Gains across sectors — led by financial, IT and oil & gas shares — powered the redound on Dalal Street.

The Indian market remained shut on Wednesday for Ganesh Chaturthi.

What do the charts suggest for Dalal Street?

Equities in other Asian markets were in the red on Thursday following a weak session on Wall Street overnight, as worries about aggressive hikes in COVID-era interest rates kept investors on the back foot. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.9 percent at the last count. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1.5 percent.
S&P 500 futures were down half a percent. On Wednesday, the three main US indices finished 0.5-1 percent lower and logged their worst August performance since 2015.

What to expect on Dalal Street?

HDFC Securities’ Shetti is of the view the bulls are ready to aid a major breakout above a key hurdle around 17,900 by the end of this week or the next week.

“A decisive move above 17,900 could pull the Nifty towards the next upside target of 18,300-18,400 in the next few weeks and immediate support stands at 17,600,” he said.

Period (No. of sessions) SMA

5 17,684.9

10 17,556 38,956.9
20 17,488.3 38,768.6

100 17,665.5
38,970.1

FII/DII activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) made net purchases worth Rs 4,166 crore of Indian shares on Tuesday, according to provisional exchange data.

Image

This takes the total FII buying to Rs 22,025.8 crore in August — the first month of net inflows after 10 straight months of outflows, though net sales by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) stood at Rs 7,068.9 crore.

Call/put open interest
The maximum call open interest is accumulated at the strike price of 18,000, with 2.2 lakh contracts, and the next highest at 17,900, with 1.2 lakh, according to exchange data.
On the other hand, the maximum put open interest is at 17,000, with 1.7 lakh contracts, and at 17,300, with 1.6 lakh contracts.
This suggests an immediate hurdle at 17,900 and an immediate base at 17,300.
