National Mountain Climbing Day in US: History, significance and things to know before going on a trek

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

A mountain is a landform that rises about 1,000 feet or more above its surrounding area.
Every year, thousands of people register themselves to scale mountain peaks.

The National Mountain Climbing Day is observed in the US on August 1 every year. The day was established to honour Bobby Matthews and his friend Josh Madigan. On August 1, 2015, Mathews and Madigan had achieved the feat of successfully scaling all 46 peaks of the Adirondack Mountains in the state of New York. They scaled the final of the 46 peaks — the White Face Mountain — on August 1. Later, in May 2016, they were formally inducted into the Adirondack 46er Club.

What’s the scientific definition of a mountain?

A mountain, according to geologists, is a landform that rises about 1,000 feet or above its surrounding area. When a chain of mountains is situated close together, it is called a mountain range. It is tough for people living in the plains to get acclimated to high mountains as the air pressure gets lower as the altitude increases. Therefore, a lot of people complain of nose bleeding on mountains. Some high mountains influence the weather pattern of a region. Not to forget, mountains also define the natural borders of nations and landscapes.

Significance of mountain climbing

For adventure enthusiasts, mountain climbing has always been a thing of fascination. Every year, thousands of people register themselves to scale mountain peaks despite the life-threatening hazards associated with it. However, trekking and mountaineering is not just about gratification, scientists and geologists have greatly benefitted from all the research made possible due to the scaling of peaks. In fact, love for mountain climbing has made the trekking business highly profitable.

Mountain climbing is a compound exercise that works all muscles of your body and is thus, a great way to stay in shape. People who like active holidays often opt for mountain climbing.

Things you should know before going on a mountain climbing

  • Learn about the impact of climate change on the mountains and the ways to save yourself from the harsh weather there.
  • Train yourself physically for mountain climbing. If you feel the need, take a course in mountain climbing.
  • If you don’t feel fit, don’t go on an expedition. If you smoke frequently, quit cigarettes at least a month before going on a trek as smokers start developing breathlessness at high altitudes.
  • Be good with maps and tools. Learn how to navigate through maps and how to use tools like GPS, compass, and altimeter, among others.
  • Purchase the right gear — from backpack to wool socks and boots. Also, always carry a first-aid kit and purchase a good quality tent.
  • When on trek, keep yourself hydrated, eat right and don’t climb too fast. Remember acclimatisation is vital. If you develop any symptoms of illness, descend quickly.

Happy mountaineering!

World Wide Web Day: History, significance and theme

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The WWW was created by English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, while he was working for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.

World Wide Web Day is observed on August 1 each year. The day is marked in honour of the ability of people to browse information freely using the Web. The Web is the tool that billions across the globe use every moment to interact with the global system of interconnected computer systems that is the Internet.

History

The WWW was created by English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, while he was working for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. Berners-Lee developed the essentials of the web –  HTTP, HTML, the WorldWideWeb browser, a server, and the first website – while working at the organisation.

Over the next two years, the development of the WWW was first shared with other research institutes and organisations. But WWW also was shared with the public as CERN shared the code and waived royalty on the use of the WWW in 1993. Less than a year later, hundreds of websites were created and the dot-com bubble started in 1995 based on the rapid developments being made using the WWW.

Significance

When we speak of the Internet today we talk about the billions of web pages that are present that we can connect to at any time. What many might not know is the fact that what we call the Internet is the combination of the World Wide Web and the Internet. The World Wide Web is the collection of all websites, webpages and resources that we can navigate to. The Internet can be thought of as the highway that connects all the webpages and websites. The development of the Web and the Internet has been instrumental in propelling the Information Age that the world is currently in.

Nifty50 at 3-month peak as FPI outflow in July lowest in 10 months

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Experts say the recent rally in the market is powered by the reducing pace of selling by foreign institutional investors but some fear the market might soon hit overbought territory.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) net sold Indian shares worth Rs 6,567.7 crore in July, according to provisional exchange data. That makes it the lowest monthly outflow for Dalal Street in 10 months.

ALSO READ: Indian shares see best week of FPI inflow in 9 months but experts say too soon to call it a reversal

On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have filled in much of the gap created by FPI selling, preventing deeper cuts in the market.
Before the recent pullback, sustained selling by FPIs since October 2021 — when benchmarks Nifty50 and Sensex clocked the last of record highs following a near 18-month-long rally — has weighed on the market for much of 2022 so far.
The Nifty50 has escaped the correction zone for now, sitting at a three-month peak, but many experts analysts want to wait some more before calling out a trend reversal.
Market expert Ajay Bagga told CNBCTV18.com last week that one cannot say whether the recent change in flows will sustain or whether the worst of foreign institutional investor selling is behind.

ALSO READ: Slowdown in FII selling will be big relief for Indian market, says Nepean Capital

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, views reducing FII selling as the big positive for the Indian market.

“If the ongoing market rally continues for some more time, there is the danger of the market moving into overbought territory with the risk of vulnerability to correction,” he warned.

Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the death of grain tycoon Vadatursky as “a great loss for all of Ukraine”.

Russian missiles pounded the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv early on Sunday, killing the owner of a major grain exporter, while a drone strike on Russia’s the Black Sea naval base in Sevastopol was launched from within the city in a “terrorist attack,” a Russian lawmaker said.

Oleksiy Vadatursky, founder and owner of agriculture company Nibulon, and his wife were killed in their home, Mykolaiv Governor Vitaliy Kim said on Telegram.

Headquartered in Mykolaiv, a strategically important city that borders the mostly Russian-occupied Kherson region, Nibulon specializes in the production and export of wheat, barley and corn, and has its fleet and shipyard.

Five Russian navy staff members were injured by an explosion after a presumed drone flew into the courtyard of Russia’s Black Sea fleet headquarters in Russian-occupied Sevastopol, the Crimean port city’s governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev told Russian media.

He blamed the attack on Ukraine, saying it had decided to “spoil Navy Day for us.”

Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield reports.
But Olga Kovitidi, a member of Russia’s upper house of parliament, told the Russian RIA news agency that the attack was “undoubtedly carried out not from outside, but from the territory of Sevastopol.”

“Urgent search operations are being conducted in the city to track down the organisers of this terrorist act. They will be found by the evening,” Kovitidi was quoted as saying.

The Sevastopol attack coincided with Russia’s Navy Day, which President Vladimir Putin marked by announcing that the navy would receive what he called “formidable” hypersonic Zircon cruise missiles in the coming months. The missiles can travel at nine times the speed of sound, outrunning air defenses.

Putin did not mention the conflict in Ukraine during a speech after signing a new naval doctrine which cast the United States as Russia’s main rival and set out Russia’s global maritime ambitions for crucial areas such as the Arctic and the Black Sea.

‘Great Loss’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the death of grain tycoon Vadatursky, as “a great loss for all of Ukraine”.

Zelenskyy added that the businessman, one of Ukraine’s richest with Forbes estimating his 2021 net worth at $430 million had been building a modern grain market with a network of transhipment terminals and elevators.

“It is these people, these companies, precisely the south of Ukraine, which has guaranteed the world’s food security,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. “This was always so. And it will be so once again.”

He added that Ukraine’s social and industrial potential, “our people, our capabilities, are surely more powerful than any Russian missiles or shells.”

Three people were also wounded in the attacks on Mykolaiv, the city’s Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych told Ukrainian television, adding that 12 missiles hit homes and educational facilities. He earlier described the strikes as “probably the most powerful” on the city of the entire five-month-old war.

Up to 50 Grad rockets hit residential areas in the southern city of Nikopol on Sunday morning, Dnipropetrovsk Governor Valentyn Reznichenko wrote on Telegram. One person was wounded.

Harvest could be halved

Zelenskyy also said on Sunday the country may harvest only half its usual amount this year due to the invasion.

“Ukrainian harvest this year is under the threat to be twice less,” suggesting half as much as usual, Zelenskyy wrote in English on Twitter.

“Our main goal — to prevent global food crisis caused by the Russian invasion. Still, grains find a way to be delivered alternatively,” he added.

Ukraine has struggled to get its product to buyers via its Black Sea ports because of the war.

But an agreement signed under the stewardship of the United Nations and Turkey on July 22 provides for safe passage for ships carrying grain out of three southern Ukrainian ports.

There is a high possibility that the first grain-exporting ship will leave Ukraine’s ports on Monday, a spokesperson for Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

Eastern Danger

Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Russia has been transferring some forces from the eastern Donbas region to the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions.

“But that won’t help them there. None of the Russian strikes will go unanswered by our military and intelligence officers,” he added.

But Zelenskyy said on Saturday that hundreds of thousands of people were still exposed to fierce fighting in the Donbas region, which contains Donetsk and Luhansk provinces and which Russia seeks to control completely. Swathes of the Donbas were held before the invasion by Russian-backed separatists.

Russia said on Sunday it had invited UN and Red Cross experts to probe the deaths of dozens of Ukrainian prisoners held by Moscow-backed separatists.

Ukraine and Russia have traded accusations over a missile strike or explosion early on Friday that appeared to have killed the Ukrainian prisoners of war in the front-line town of Olenivka in eastern Donetsk.

The Russian defence ministry had published a list of 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war killed and 73 wounded in what it said was a Ukrainian military strike with US-made artillery.

Ukraine’s armed forces denied responsibility, saying Russian artillery had attacked the prison to hide mistreatment there.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Sunday condemned the attack and said it had not yet received permission to visit the site while adding it was not its mandate to publicly investigate alleged war crimes.
