The recent overturning of the Roe v Wade judgement by the US Supreme Court, which removed abortion as a fundamental right, highlights the struggle that nearly half of humanity faces across the world. Despite significant development for the rights of women, the world still is starkly lagging in areas like inclusion, equality and safety. Here are some of the worst and best places for women in the world, according to the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index 2021. Georgetown University’s Institute for Women (GIWPS) and the PRIO Center on Gender, Peace, and Security published and released the report, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the United Nations on June 28. The index is based on data that measures women’s inclusion, justice access, and security in 170 countries. The lower the the national index score, the worst the country is for women. (Image: Reuters)

National Doctor’s Day 2022: Why we celebrate Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy’s Birthday

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The National Doctor’s Day spreads awareness about the precious care delivered by doctors.  The National Doctor’s Day was first observed in India in 1991.

July 1, the birth anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a physician, academician, philanthropist, freedom fighter and politician, is observed as the National Doctor’s Day in India. On this day, contributions of doctors to mankind are acknowledged. The National Doctor’s Day was first observed in India in 1991.

Who was Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy?

Dr Roy served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal after India got Independence. He was at the position until his death on July 1, 1962. Dr Roy was instrumental in setting up the Indian Medical Association & Medical Council of India. He also played a pivotal role in setting up Indian Institute of Mental Health, the Infectious Disease Hospital and Kolkata’s first-ever postgraduate medical college. In 1961, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

The British Medical Journal, in its obituary, described Roy as the “first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India, who towered over his contemporaries in several fields”.

How is National Doctor’s Day observed?

Both government and non-government healthcare organisations celebrate the National Doctor’s Day. On this day, consultation workshops, medical checkup camps, and general screening test camps are organised across the country. In schools and colleges, students are encouraged to take up the medical profession. Patients who share a rapport with their doctors send greeting cards, gifts, bouquets, etc to them.

National Doctor’s Day theme

This year, the National Doctor’s Day would be observed under the theme of ‘Family Doctors on the Front Line’.

Significance of National Doctor’s Day

The annual celebration of the National Doctor’s Day spreads awareness about the importance and precious care delivered by doctors. Their role in increasing India’s life expectancy is unparalleled. As the deployment of doctors grew in rural India, the infant mortality rate and the maternal mortality rate came down in the most remote corners of the country.

In the backdrop of the National Doctor’s Day last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’, said, “On July 1, we will celebrate National Doctor’s Day. We must pay tribute to our doctors who ensured that India did not succumb to the challenges posed by COVID-19.”

This year too, the pandemic isn’t completely over and as a majority of government hospitals are often overwhelmed with patients, the National Doctor’s Day gives a good opportunity to extend our gratitude for their life-saving services.

Happy birthday Venkaiah Naidu: The boy from Chavatapalem village who went on to be India’s vice president

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

After the victory of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in 1999, Venkaiah Naidu served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Venkaiah Naidu, the current Vice President of India, celebrates his 73rd birthday today. Born in 1949 in Chavatapalem village of Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu became the 13th Vice President of the country in 2017. He is going to vacate the office in August.

Before becoming the Vice President, Naidu had a spectacular journey as a politician and he is one of the highly respected public figures in the country.

He finished his graduation in law from the Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam. He soon after joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was also the president of the Janta Party Youth Wing in Andhra Pradesh from 1977-1980. It was during the Emergency that Naidu hogged limelight for his political activism against the then Congress-led Central government and even got arrested. Immediately after the Emergency, Naidu was elected to the state assembly in 1978, a position he maintained till 1985.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980, he was soon elevated to the position of Youth Wing Vice President, and then soon after state general secretary, state unit chief, and BJP Legislature Party leader. Naidu was the BJP’s General Secretary from 1993-2000 and also served as its spokesperson.

After the victory of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance in 1999, he served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Naidu also succeeded Jana Krishnamurthi as the BJP President in 2003 and was then elected unopposed to a full three-year term. But, Naidu resigned in 2004, after the defeat of the NDA in the general elections.

However, he continued to hold office as one of its vice-presidents. Naidu also had three consecutive terms in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from 1998 to 2016, before he shifted to Rajasthan for the fourth term.

After the victory of the NDA government in 2014, Naidu was given the portfolio of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs and then the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in 2016. Naidu resigned from both positions in 2017 in order to serve as the Vice President, securing 516 votes against the Opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who received 244 votes.
