Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty snap 3-day winning streak led by fall in banking, financial stocks

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Sensex and Nifty snapped a three-day gaining streak to end lower in Tuesday’s trade amid tepid global mood. Investors were also jittery ahead of the March quarter GDP data. Major selling was seen in power and financial sectors while buying was seen in realty, metals and auto stocks. At close, the 30-scrip S&P BSE Sensex was down 359.33 points or 0.64 percent at 55,566.41, while the broader Nifty shut shop at 16,584.50, down 76.90 points or 0.46 percent.

Indian equity benchmark indices snapped a three-day gaining streak to end lower in Tuesday’s trade amid tepid global mood. All eyes are now on India’s official GDP data for the January-March period due later today.

At close, the 30-scrip S&P BSE Sensex was down 359.33 points or 0.64 percent at 55,566.41, while the broader Nifty shut shop at 16,584.50, down 76.90 points or 0.46 percent. About 1,720 shares have advanced, 1,548 shares declined, and 121 shares are unchanged.

Major selling was seen in power and financial sectors while buying was seen in realty, metals and auto stocks.

The BSE midcap and smallcap indices ended with gains of half a percent each.

ONGC, M&M, NTPC, Coal India, PowerGrid, SBI Life, Apollo Hospitals, JSW Steel, and Britannia Industries were the top gainers on the Nifty50 index.

Sun Pharma, Kotak Bank, HDFC, SBI, Reliance Industries, Shree Cement, and HDFC Life, down up to 3.5 percent, were the major laggard on the indices.

Amid sectoral indices, Nifty Realty index gained 2.2 percent while the Nifty PSU Bank index fell 1.1 percent.

The rupee depreciated 12 paise to close at 77.66 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, tracking a negative trend in domestic equities and surging crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 77.65 against the greenback and finally settled at 77.66, down 12 paise over its previous close.

Foreign portfolio investors turned net buyers as they bought shares worth Rs 502.08 crore on Monday, as per stock exchange data.

“Domestic market failed to hold on to recovery mode as it was awaiting the release of GDP data. A hike in oil prices due to the EU’s ban on Russian oil imports would act as a headwind in taming global inflation. Changes in policy by central banks would be a major factor to be monitored in the coming days,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Delhi minister Satyendar Jain sent to ED custody till June 9 in money laundering case

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Delhi minister Satyendar Jain has been sent to Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody till June 9 in connection with a money laundering case on Tuesday.

A trial court sent Delhi minister Satyendar Jain to Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody till June 9 in connection with a money laundering case on Tuesday. The court issued the order a day after Jain was arrested for allegedly being involved in hawala dealings.

During the court hearing on Tuesday, the ED sought Jain’s custody for 14 days. The agency told the Delhi court that Jain was evasive during questioning.

“He gave answers contrary to collect evidence,” the ED said, saying it is likely the evidence in the case might be tampered with till “we trace the full trail of money”.

However, the court has now been sent Jain to ED custody till June 9.

On Monday, Jain was arrested under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after a few hours of questioning, ED officials said.

Last month, the ED said assets worth Rs 4.81 crore of Jain’s family and companies “beneficially owned and controlled” by him were provisionally attached as part of a money laundering probe against him.

Reacting to the news, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “I have personally studied this (Satyendar Jain’s arrest by ED) case, it is completely fraud. We neither tolerate corruption nor we do corruption. We have a very honest government. He has been targeted because of political reasons. We have faith in our judiciary.”

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also called the money laundering case against Jain “fake”. He said, “A fake case has been going on against Satyendar Jain for eight years. He has been called by the ED several times so far.”

“The ED had stopped calling him for some time because it did not find anything against him. Now, it has again started calling him because he is the (AAP) incharge of the Himachal Pradesh polls,” Sisodia said.

Claiming that “the BJP is afraid of losing the election”, Sisodia said Jain “was arrested to prevent him from going to Himachal. He will be released soon as he has been arrested in a fake case.”

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoj Tiwari hit out at the AAP and said, “You are teaching honesty to all but AAP ministers are hawala businessmen.

Jain is the minister for health, industries, power, home, urban development and water in the Arvind Kejriwal-led government. Earlier, the BJP had alleged that Jain was involved in “hawala” work through certain companies between 2015 and 2017.

Explained: Why IT CEOs are making big bucks but freshers struggle to go beyond Rs 4.5 lakh a year

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

IT CEO pay increased at a massive pace of 835 percent in a decade while freshers at tech giants struggle to even get past the Rs 4.5 lakh per annum bracket in 2022, meaning just a 45 percent raise since 2012. Here’s why tech CEO salaries have surged while fresher salary remains stagnant

Infosys chief executive officer (CEO) Salil Parikh is proposed to take home a paycheck of nearly Rs 80 crore this fiscal while a fresher at the IT behemoth will draw an annual salary of Rs 3.6 lakh. A decade ago, the company’s then CEO S.D. Shibulal was being paid Rs 80 lakh while newbies were making Rs 2.75 lakh per annum.

Even as attrition rates are high across the IT sector and techies are able to negotiate for high pay packages, data shows salaries of IT firms’ CEOs have gone up five to even 10 times in some cases, while fresher remunerations are stagnant or probably even lower, if adjusted for inflation.

CEO vs freshers salaries compared since 2012

The current salary scenario is amid a consistently strong supply of freshers while IT companies’ managements’ have moved from being promoter-driven to professionally-driven.

In the example cited above, Infosys’ Salil Parekh drew a salary of Rs 71.02 crore in the 2021-2022 financial year. This sum includes a total fixed salary of Rs 6.07 crore, bonus or incentive pay of Rs 12.62 crore and exercise of employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) earlier granted at Rs 52.33 crore.

Here’s why IT CEO pay increased at a massive pace of 835 percent in a decade while freshers struggled to even get past the Rs 4.5 lakh per annum bracket, meaning just a 45 percent raise since 2012.

1. Salary components: CEO salaries are linked to ESOPs and profitability, the more the profitability, the better the chances of the top brass taking home a higher pay. Freshers, meanwhile, do not usually have ESOPs linked to their pay packages.

Salil Parekh, whose salary has been most talked about, got 70 percent of the remuneration last year via the exercise of the ESOPs granted to him earlier. Infosys cited industry-leading growth in recent years for the fat paycheck.

2. Company growth: Tech firms have grown 3-4X in the last 10 years in terms of size and employee strength and now it’s the responsibility of CEOs to steer the companies in the current multi-year tech upcycle.

Revenue of tech companies grew 3-4X  in 10 years
Company  FY12 revenue (in Rs crore) FY22 revenue (in Rs crore) Growth
TCS 48,893 1,91,754 3.9X
Infosys 33,734 1,21,641 3.7X

3. Training: While an expert is hired for a top-level role, IT firms invest heavily in training and skilling the employees. For instance, TCS junior employees spent 150 hours skilling themselves in the last year.

“IT industry provides have become more sophisticated, the level of skills that most freshers bring to the table has remained the same,” Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder and vice-president of TeamLease Services, explained.

4. Demand-supply gap: There is only one CEO, and if one performs their duties well, they get paid well. IT CEOs are being poached from global firms like Wipro’s Thierry Delaporte, the first global CEO of an Indian company, or Infosys CEOs in the past like Vishal Sikka and now Salil Parekh were from global IT giants. Hence, the salary needs to be comparable.

The supply of freshers i.e. engineers, on the other hand, has remained robust over many years and reports suggest the supply is four times that of demand.

5. Exceptions: The salary of a fresher cited above is a median but if one is willing to get skilled and shows the appetite, their salary can be double the median salary, Tata Consultancy Services said. Also, in the past two years, as attrition has been on the rise, IT firms have given big bonuses, salary hikes, and promotions to all “deserving employees”, it added.

Your Stocks: Experts’ take on Tata Power, Trident, Vardhaman Textiles

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Jay Thakkar of Marwadi Shares and Finance and Parthiv Shah of Tracom Stock Brokers shared their reading and outlook on Tata Power, Trident, and Vardhaman Textiles.

Jay Thakkar of Marwadi Shares and Finance, and Parthiv Shah of Tracom Stock Brokers shared their reading and outlook on specific stocks, sectors and markets.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, they spoke at length about Tata Power, Trident, Vardhaman Textiles, Nitin Spinners, Marico, PVR, Lupin, and Indiabulls Housing Finance.

Vardhaman Textiles

Shah: I would suggest a hold for this stock. It is quoting at around 6 times the 2022-23 earnings and even if I were to discount the gross margin impact for the year and assuming the fact that they are still very good in terms of managing the inventory — they also have almost 1,00,000 spindles capex going to come on stream by October so that will again add to their topline. We are upbeat on this company over the longer horizon, but short to medium term seems a little dicey.

Tata Power

Shah: The good thing is that they have very good order book in that space — they recently won one of the biggest orders in terms of size if I were to quantify one gigawatt from SJVN which is an order book of almost Rs 5,000 crores. We would suggest a hold on Tata Power.

Thakkar: For a longer-term, the investor can continue holding. The partial profit booking is recommended at the current market price, or if it breaks Rs 210. In the short term, it can bounce back around say more 4 to 5 percent from your hereon. But for the long term, I would say that at least one should continue holding the stock.

Trident

Shah: Here I would suggest booking out because this company has a lot of cyclicality play in terms of its paper divisions as well as the textile division. So I would suggest booking out here.

Thakkar: As far as Trident is concerned, that has shown some strong run-up. Investor can definitely book some partial profit at these levels as the stock might correct until the levels of Rs 36 going forward.

IPL 2022 review: In Umran, Mohsin India unearths next gen of fast bowlers, Hardik potential captain

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

IPL 2022 unearthed some fascinating talent, Umran Malik and Mohsin Khan could be the next pace sensation for India. While the IPL 2022 winning captain, the Gujarat Titans skipper, Hardik Pandya, proved his mettle as a leader and could be India’s next captain waiting in the wings.

Where talent meets opportunity: the IPL lived up to its motto yet again with the 2022 season unearthing a battery of pacers — some raw and some already polished — and a potential India captain in Hardik Pandya. In his first full season for Hyderabad, Umran Malik attracted the world’s attention with his ability to clock 150kmph plus with ease, also forcing the Indian selectors to take notice while young left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan impressed with a lethal combination of pace and accuracy for the new Lucknow franchise.

The competition reinforced India’s rise as a fast-bowling powerhouse with the likes of Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh (both Chennai Super Kings), Yash Dayal (Gujarat Titans) and Kuldeep Sen (Rajasthan Royals) also making their presence felt in the world’s biggest T20 league. There were young batters too who instantly showed they belonged to the higher level. They included Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma who was praised by none other than his captain Rohit Sharma, who called the southpaw an Indian material.

Then there was Jitesh Sharma who drew praise from India’s great Virender Sehwag with his exploits as a wicketkeeper batter for Punjab Kings. His team failed to make the play-offs again but he made the most of the opportunity. The other uncapped batters who may not be new to the IPL but had a memorable season included Hyderabad’s Rahul Tripathi, who was unfortunate to miss out on an India call-up and Abhishek Sharma, who excelled as an opener.

Hardik makes his case for future India captaincy

Before the start of the IPL, there was a  serious question mark over the star all-rounder’s fitness but by the end of it, he not only ticked most of the boxes with bat and ball, but also emerged as an astute leader who could captain India in the future. Having not played since India’s early exit at the T20 World Cup last year, Hardik silenced all his critics after facing a lot of flak for his fitness and for not being able to bowl regularly. He relished batting at number four, and when there was need for him to roll his arm over, he came up with vital contributions, including a match-winning spell in the IPL final.

The oldies still got it

It was also a season to remember for the experienced Umesh Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha and Dinesh Karthik, who made yet another India comeback after excelling in the finisher’s role for Royal Challengers Bangalore. His team Kolkata Knight Riders may have made a premature exit, but Umesh made the ball talk in the early part of the tournament, providing regular breakthroughs for his team in the powerplay.

He was never rated highly for the T20 game but this season he showed he can very much thrive in the shortest format. Playing for the victorious Gujarat team, Saha rediscovered himself with bat as he opened alongside Shubman Gill. Left out of the Indian Test team, Saha had a point to prove and with his ability to play strokes all around the ground, he helped Gujarat get off to a flier on a number of occasions.

COVID struck IPL again but BCCI ensured smooth conduct

After the pandemic, it was the first IPL that was held in India in its entirety with the BCCI pulling off a challenging task to stage 74 games in over two months, 14 more than the last edition following the addition of two new teams.

It did face a few hiccups with Delhi Capitals reporting multiple cases in their camp, forcing the board to reschedule a few games. However, with the COVID situation in control in the country, there was never any threat to the tournament even after an outbreak in the Delhi franchise.

Sidhu Moose Wala cremated at his village in Punjab’s Mansa, thousands gather to pay last respects

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Punjab singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s funeral was performed at his village in Mansa, Punjab on Tuesday. Thousand gathered to pay their last respects to the singer. Sidhu was shot dead by unidentified persons on Sunday evening in Mansa.

The last rites of popular Punjab singer Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot dead on Sunday evening in Mansa, were performed on Tuesday. Thousands gathered to join the funeral procession of the singer in Punjab’s Mansa as the family prepared to conduct his last rites.

Earlier in the day, Sidhu’s body was taken from Mansa Civil Hospital to his residence in the district. A huge crowd was seen outside Sidhu’s home as his body arrived there. A heavy police force was also deployed outside the residence.

Sidhu Moose Wala was a controversial figure. According to reports, police had charged him under India’s Arms Act in 2020 for allegedly promoting gun culture in one of his songs.

He was shot dead by unidentified men on Sunday when he was driving in his car. The incident triggered a political upheaval in Punjab with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress hitting out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the state over Sidhu’s murder.

Here’s what has happened so far in Sidhu’s murder case | 10 points

  1.  Sidhu Moose Wala, who was also a Congress leader, was shot dead on Sunday in Punjab’s Mansa district. The incident happened a day after the state government withdrew his security cover. Moose Wala’s cousin and a friend, who were travelling in a jeep with him, were also injured. Police said at least three weapons were used and 30 rounds fired in the attack.
  2.  Prima facie, the attack was suspected to be a fallout of inter-gang rivalry, while police said the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was involved in it. Police said the name of Moosewala’s manager had cropped up in the murder case of youth Akali leader Vicky Middukhera last year. “This (Sidhu’s) murder appeared to be in retaliation of Middukhera’s murder, the top police officer said,” Punjab Director General of Police VK Bhawra said.
  3. On Monday, Sidhu Moose Wala’s father Balkaur Singh wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and National Investigation Agency (NIA). He also demanded the case be investigated by a sitting judge of the high court and sought an apology from the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP).
  4. Following the father’s appeal, the Punjab government ordered a judicial probe into Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder. “CM Bhagwant Mann announces to set up a judicial commission under the sitting judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court to probe the killing of Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala. CM says perpetrators of the heinous crime will be behind the bars soon,” Punjab Chief Minister’s office said in a tweet.
  5.  A political upheaval erupted over Sidhu’s death with the BJP and the Congress lashing out at the AAP-led Punjab government for curtailing the singer’s security cover. The Congress termed the incident a political murder. “I feel shocked and devastated beyond belief and expression over the loss of my colleague and a promising star in the party,” Warring said in a statement while holding CM Bhagwant Mann wholly and solely responsible for his murder.
  6. Meanwhile, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said Moose Wala’s murder within hours of the AAP government withdrawing his security once again shows a complete collapse of law and order in Punjab. Besides this, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said the attack exhibits an abject breakdown of law and order in Punjab.
  7. Following the chaos, the Punjab Police detained five men in Dehradun on Monday for allegedly having links with the killing of Sidhu Moose Wala. “They were picked up from the Shimla bypass area here and taken to Punjab for interrogation,” a police official said on condition of anonymity.
  8. Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is said to have involvement in Sidhu’s murder, had filed a plea before a Delhi court seeking a direction to the Tihar jail authorities to not give his custody to Punjab police.
  9. The plea alleged that the accused was having apprehension of a fake encounter by the Punjab police due to political rivalry. Bishnoi had requested that prior information be given to the court about the production warrant of the Punjab Police or any other police against him and not give his custody to any other Police. He also pleaded that any police may investigate a case pending against him at Tihar Jail without obtaining physical custody.
  10.  The  Delhi court, however, refused to entertain the plea filed by alleged gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Following this, the gangster later moved the Delhi High Court over the matter, news agency ANI reported on Tuesday.
