Forex markets are closed on Wednesday for the annual closing of banks. Domestic equity as well as commodity markets, however, are operating normally. The money markets will also remain closed on April 2 on account of Ram Navami.

On Tuesday, the rupee had settled on a flat note at 75.60 against the dollar.

Crude oil benchmarks, meanwhile, opened the month mixed on Wednesday, following their biggest-ever quarterly and monthly losses, overshadowed by fears of global oversupply as data showed a bigger-than-expected rise in inventories in the United States.

Asian stocks clung to gains on Wednesday, helped by a bounce in Australian shares, but risks for equities remain large as the coronavirus pandemic rattles the underpinnings of the global economy.

Summary

Gold prices in India traded higher on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) Wednesday led by safe-haven buying among investors as the coronavirus cases rise, analysts said.

Gold prices in India traded higher on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) Wednesday led by safe-haven buying among investors as the coronavirus cases rise, analysts said.

At 1:25 pm, gold futures for June delivery rose by Rs 199 or 0.46 percent to Rs 43,155 per 10 grams as against the previous close of Rs 42,956 and opening price of Rs 42,700 on the MCX.

“This is just a speculative move and safe-haven buying among the investors. The money market is closed and hence there is no currency impact on the gold prices,” said Jigar Trivedi, Fundamental Analyst – Commodity, Anand Rathi.

In global market, gold prices rose as investors opted safe-haven buying on worries over the spread of the virus and hopes of more monetary easing by the central banks, Trivedi added.

Spot gold rose 1 percent to $1,587.31 per ounce by 0605 GMT, having slumped 3.1 percent in the previous session on a strong dollar. US gold futures were up 0.3 percent at $1,600.70.

“On MCX, Rs 43,000 will act as support level and resistance is placed at Rs 43,400 for gold prices,” Trivedi added.

Meanwhile, silver futures traded 0.53 percent higher at Rs 39,732 per kg. The prices opened at Rs 39,599 as compared to the previous close of Rs 39,523 per kg.

Oil prices mixed, US inventory build-up heightens oversupply concerns

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Brent crude was down by 21 cents, or 0.8 percent, at $26.14 a barrel by 0032 GMT or 6:02 am IST.

Crude oil benchmarks opened the month mixed on Wednesday, following their biggest-ever quarterly and monthly losses, overshadowed by fears of global oversupply as data showed a bigger-than-expected rise in inventories in the United States.

Brent crude was down by 21 cents, or 0.8 percent, at $26.14 a barrel by 0032 GMT or 6:02 am IST, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was up by 27 cents, or 1.3 percent, at $20.75 a barrel.

US crude inventories rose by 10.5 million barrels last week, far exceeding forecasts for a 4 million barrel build-up, data from industry group the American Petroleum Institute showed.

Wednesday’s opening session left oil prices marooned near their lowest levels since 2002 amid the global coronavirus crisis that has brought worldwide economic slowdown and slashed oil demand. Crude futures ended the quarter down nearly 70 percent after record losses in March.

The bearish mood in the market wasn’t improved by a rift within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Saudi Arabia and other members of OPEC were unable to come to an agreement on Tuesday to meet in April to discuss sliding prices.

“It is very unlikely that OPEC, with or without Russia or the United States, will agree a sufficient volumetric solution to offset oil demand losses,” BNP Paribas analyst Harry Tchilinguirian said in a report issued on Tuesday.

A Reuters survey of 40 analysts forecast Brent would average $38.76 a barrel in 2020, 36 percent lower than the $60.63 forecast in a February survey.

Financial impact of unsold BS-IV stock limited to Rs 125 crore, says Hero MotoCorp

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Hero MotoCorp has approximately 1.4 lakh BSIV units worth Rs 500 crore in dealerships across the country, sources told CNBC-TV18.

Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, would be taking back 15,000 unsold BS-IV units from its dealerships in Delhi and NCR region. Hero MotoCorp has approximately 1.4 lakh BS-IV units worth Rs 500 crore in dealerships across the country, sources told CNBC-TV18.

The highly placed sources at Hero MotoCorp confirmed that the company would be taking back only around 15,000 units from the dealer network in Delhi-NCR, which would be later exported to markets in Asia and Africa.

The company says its dealers have already billed the remaining BS-IV stock. Senior Officials at Hero MotoCorp told CNBC-TV18 exclusively, “The balance 1.25 lakh vehicles have been sold by dealers to their employees using online platforms, for which we have provided a support of Rs 10,000 per vehicle. So the actual financial impact on the Company would only be limited to above extent”.

A simple calculation reveals that Hero MotoCorp’s financial support to dealers would be Rs 125 crore.

Therefore, while the company’s total BS-IV inventory may be worth 500 crore rupees, the actual financial implication due to dealer support would be limited.

The sources confirmed that vehicles which have been billed to employees and already registered before April 1 will now be sold as second hand vehicles and the company is partially compensating them for these units.

Hero MotoCorp chairman Pawan Munjal, while addressing the company’s dealers last week, had said, “We will not let you suffer on account of the BS-IV stock. Asian shares faced another leg lower on Wednesday as the coronavirus sharply slows global growth, leading a gauge of world stocks to post its biggest quarterly decline in more than a decade and oil prices to trade near lows last seen in 2002.

Shares on Wall Street tumbled on Tuesday, with the Dow registering its biggest quarterly fall since 1987 and the S&P 500 its steepest quarterly drop since a decade ago on growing evidence of the massive downturn the pandemic will incur.

E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 traded 1 percent lower in after-hours trade, while Asian futures suggested the rout would continue.

FTSE China A50 futures in Singapore were down 0.85% and Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.86 percent in early trade.
