India captain Virat Kohli, a fashionista off the field, gave a resounding thumbs-up to his team’s new orange jersey which they will be wearing in Sunday’s World Cup group match against England at Edgbaston.

The ‘Men in Blue’ will be wearing an orange-blue jersey to distinguish themselves from hosts England who wear a lighter version of blue.

The choice of orange has sparked debates back home with some opposition politicians accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing Hindu nationalist party of pushing its trademark saffron hue on the team.

“I quite like it, I think it’s right up there. For me it would be eight,” Kohli told reporters after being asked to rate the jersey from one to 10.

“Honestly, I’m not saying it for the sake of it. I really like it. The contrast is very nice.”

Four other teams in the tournament have had to wear a different colours to avoid looking like their opposition.

Accordingly, blue-shirted Afghanistan opted for red in three of their matches.

South Africa, who usually wear green, chose gold for two matches while Sri Lanka swapped their blue for yellow for a couple of games.

Bangladesh, who were green, will don red in their July 5 match against Pakistan at the Lord’s.

A stylish batsman on the field and a fashion-conscious celebrity off it, Kohli has designed sneakers in collaboration with sportswear giant Puma.

The 30-year-old satisfied with the fit and welcomed the break from usual blue.

“The fit is great, it’s a nice change,” he said.

“For one game, it’s fine. I don’t think permanently we’d be heading in that direction because blue has always been our colour, very proud to wear that. For a change and looking at the occasion, it’s a very smart kit.”

Mann Ki Baat: Democracy is part of our culture, heritage, says PM Modi

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the Emergency, saying democracy is part of our culture and heritage and during the 19-month the people felt that something was taken from them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the Emergency, saying democracy is part of our culture and heritage and during the 19-month the people felt that something was taken from them.

Talking about the democratic spirit, Modi, in his first ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme after being elected for a second term, also said that the Emergency was not only opposed by the political parties and its leaders but also by the common man.

“When the Emergency was imposed, it was not only opposed by the political parties or just restricted to jails. There was anger in the heart of the common man. There was a restlessness in the people for lost democracy. We realise the importance of democratic rights when it was taken away from us,” he said.

“India can say proudly, that apart from rules and law, democracy is our heritage and culture. The common man felt the pain of the Emergency.”

Speaking about the recently-concluded Lok Sabha polls, he said the scale of the country’s electoral process makes every Indian proud.

“India just completed the largest ever election. The scale of the election was immense. It tells us about the faith people have in our democracy,” he added.

Besides the Emergency, the Prime Minister also stressed on the need to conserve water as drought looms large in vast parts of the country.

Modi returned with his monthly radio broadcast after a break of four months due to the Lok Sabha polls. It was last broadcast in February.

Overdrive: First ride review of Ducati Diavel 1260

In this episode, Overdrive’s Abhay Verma got a chance to ride all-new Ducati Diavel 1260 in Spain.

The Diavel is one of the most important products for Ducati in India and in August 2019, this motorcycle will be launched in the country. The new model comes with a new design, suspension and chassis.

The Narendra Modi government has a surfeit of political capital but union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman starts with some shortfalls in revenue capital.

Tax revenue to the central government grew by only 6 percent in FY19 against estimates of 19.5 percent. So, the interim budget FY20 tax target of Rs 17 trillion requires tax revenues to grow by 29.5 percent. Impossible!

The street expects tax revenues to grow by 15-17 percent to say Rs 15.5-16 trillion – that means a shortfall of about Rs 1 trillion by way of tax revenues. This tax shortfall will be due to shortfalls in income tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Income tax grew by just 13 percent last year. The interim budget target of Rs 6.07 trillion of income tax requires growth of 31 percent. Not happening. It will more likely grow by around 16 percent. So that means an income tax of Rs 5.4 trillion implying a shortfall of Rs 60,000 crore.

Likewise, GST is estimated to grow in FY20 to Rs 7.6 trillion as against Rs 5.8 trillion last year. A more realistic number may be less by a trillion, so Rs 6.6 to 6.8 trillion.

On the other hand overshoot in expenditure looks very likely in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. It was budgeted for small farmers but has been now extended to all farmers. So, versus the budgeted Rs 75,000 crore, the expense may actually be Rs 87,000 crore.

Likewise, possibly up to Rs 70,000 crore of FY19 food subsidies may have been met by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) taking loans. Higher bank capitalisation has also been indicated by the government.

So from where will the money come? Maybe higher Reserve Bank of India (RBI) dividend is everyone’s guess and possibly higher deficit and higher market borrowing.

Pronab Sen, former adviser of the Planning Commission; Sajjid Chinoy, chief India economist at JPMorgan; Soumya Kanti Ghosh, group chief economic adviser of State Bank of India and Hitendra Dave, head of global banking & markets at HSBC India, discussed the challenges facing the Nirmala Sitharaman in her maiden budget.

It’s a work in progress, says union minister Inderjit Singh on new statistical policy

Union statistics and programme implementation minister Inderjit Singh on Saturday said the new statistical policy is a work in progress and can’t give a definitive timeline.

“I cannot give any specific time as the government is involved in and we will announce it as soon as we can,” Singh said.

Pravin Srivastava, the chief statistician of India-cum-secretary, ministry of statistics and program implementation, said, “We don’t necessarily agree with what former chief economic adviser (CEA) Arvind Subramanian has said.”

“Whether anyone’s opinion is pro or against government’s thinking, we will look at it and if we will find something substantial in it, then we will look at that as well,” he said.

Srivastava said the new statistical policy was drafted last year and had put it up for inter-ministerial consultation, “Policy is looking at structures, exchange of data and several other things.”
