Google Pixel 8a might be priced under ₹45,000 with a bigger battery

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Pixel 7a was launched last year around the same time at ₹43,999 and is sold exclusively on Flipkart. Currently, the device is available for ₹36,999 on the platform.

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 8a during its annual I/O developer conference on May 14 and keeping up with the tradition, the internet has blessed us with all kinds of leaks and rumours for the upcoming budget Pixel — the latest one being its price.

According to a report by Smartprix, the Pixel 8a is expected to be priced the same as the Pixel 7a when it launched last year. Done in partnership with reliable tipster, OnLeaks, the report suggests that the Pixel 8a will be launched starting at $499.

“To experience a clean Android operating system with Google’s AI-based features, you’d have to pay USD 499 for the variant with 128GB storage and USD 559 for the variant with 256GB of storage,” Smartprix said.

The pricing for India, however, is still not clear. Google raised the prices of the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro in India as compared to their US pricing. So, there is a possibility that Indians could have to pay more than they did for the Pixel 7a.

The Pixel 7a was launched last year around the same time at 43,999 and is sold exclusively on Flipkart. Currently, the device is available for 36,999 on the platform.

Pixel 8a vs Pixel 7a

While the price could remain more or less the same, the Pixel 8a is expected to feature a bigger battery than its predecessor, the Pixel 7a, with a 4,500 mAh battery over the previous 4,385 mAh.

It will also run on Google’s latest AI-enabled Tensor G3 chipset, same as the one on the bigger Pixel 8 devices, thus making it capable of running generative AI features.

“For instance, the smartphone could feature the latest Circle to Search feature, a visual lookup that recognises what’s on the user’s screen and helps gather more information about it. Further, Pixel 8a users should get access to the AI features in Google Photos, including Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, etc,” Smartprix added.

Everything we know so far

The Pixel 8a is rumoured to feature a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,400 nits of peak brightness.

The camera setup on the device is expected to be the same as the Pixel 7a with a 64MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide lens. The selfie camera is expected to be 13MP as well.

There is speculation that with the bigger battery, users might see a higher 27W fast charging support but no trusted source has been able to verify that information.

The full truth about the upcoming Pixel 8a will only come out when Google “officially” decides to reveal it, most likely on May 14.

Tesla retreats from next-generation ‘gigacasting’ manufacturing process: Sources

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Gigacasting involves producing large, single-piece castings for vehicle components, like Tesla’s Model Y rear underbody. It reduces assembly steps, improves structural integrity, and lowers costs by eliminating the need for welding multiple parts together.

Tesla has backed away from an ambitious plan for innovations in gigacasting, its pioneering manufacturing process, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in another sign that the electric-vehicle maker is retrenching amid falling sales and rising competition.

Tesla has been a leader in gigacasting, a cutting-edge technique that uses huge presses with thousands of tons of clamping pressure to die-cast large sections of the car’s underbody. On a typical vehicle, the underbody can consist of hundreds of individual parts.

Last year, as Tesla developed a new small-vehicle platform, it aimed to punch out the underbody in a single piece, Reuters exclusively reported last September, citing five sources familiar with the automaker’s gigacasting operations. The long-term goal was to radically simplify manufacturing and slash costs.

But Tesla has since halted the effort, opting to stick with its more proven method of casting vehicle underbodies in three pieces: two gigacasted front and rear sections and a midsection made of aluminium and steel frames to store batteries, according to the two sources familiar with the matter. That is largely the same three-piece method the company has used for its last two new models, the Model Y crossover SUV and the Cybertruck pickup.

Tesla’s retreat from one-piece gigacasting has not been previously reported. The automaker did not respond to a request for comment.

The decision to hold off on the potential manufacturing breakthrough marks another example of Tesla slashing short-term spending as it adjusts to falling sales and profit margins, softening EV demand globally, and intensifying competition from rival EV makers such as China’s BYD. Tesla last month laid off more than 10% of its global workforce. A handful of senior executives have also resigned or been pushed out.

Such moves also reflect a fundamental strategy shift, with Tesla now focusing more on developing self-driving vehicles than on pushing for huge growth in EV sales volume, which many investors had been counting on.

The step-back on gigacasting occurred last autumn, the people said, before Tesla decided in late February to halt the development of an all-new affordable car, often called the Model 2, which would have been the first vehicle built with one-piece gigacasting. Reuters first reported the cancellation of the Model 2 on April 5.

On April 23, as it released earnings that missed Wall Street expectations, Tesla said it had a simpler, faster plan for producing “more affordable” cars after shelving plans for the Model 2, which was expected to cost $25,000 and be released in the second half of 2025.

Instead, Tesla officials said, it would produce affordable models using a current platform and production lines. On an investor call, Chief Executive Elon Musk declined to provide details on the planned new offerings or their target prices.

Tesla has not entirely abandoned the small-vehicle platform it had planned for the Model 2. Instead, it will move forward in developing a self-driving robotaxi on the same platform, Reuters reported in the April 5 story. One of the two sources familiar with the automaker’s gigacasting operations said the suppliers involved are now adapting Tesla’s three-piece process for the next-generation vehicle.

Both sources said the automaker decided last autumn to halt work on the more innovative and difficult one-piece casting process. At the time, the rationale for the decision was to speed the development of the now-defunct Model 2 and avoid any costly delays or manufacturing problems, the two sources said.

BIG UPFRONT INVESTMENT

Tesla and Musk have said gigacasting helps the automaker reduce costs over the long term. But the process requires large initial investments and is difficult and time-consuming to perfect, automotive manufacturing experts say.

Experts in vehicle manufacturing said Tesla’s more conservative path on gigacasting is no surprise and in part reflects the pains it has experienced historically in launching complex and innovative vehicles on time. The automaker’s highly experimental Cybertruck arrived last autumn at a far higher price than predicted after substantial delays to work through manufacturing issues. Tesla is still struggling to produce the angular, stainless-steel pickup in mass-market volumes.

Holding off on one-piece gigacasting will save the company from making massive short-term capital investments in manufacturing and design, said Terry Woychowski, president of US engineering company Caresoft Global, who has led teardowns and engineering analyses on numerous vehicles, including Teslas.

“Would they rather have done it all in one big piece? Sure, they would’ve, but at what cost?” Woychowski asked.

James Womack, a vehicle manufacturing expert and former research director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Tesla’s gigacasting pullback reflects the company’s scramble last year to launch an all-new $25,000 car to catch up with Chinese EV makers who are already dominating the low-cost EV segment.

But pushing forward with an innovative production technique would do little to help sell a Tesla car to consumers, Womack said.

“It’s not very exciting from the standpoint of the public and buyer,” Womack said, “and you don’t know whether this is really a big cost-saver or not.”

US urges China, Russia to declare only humans, not AI, control nuclear weapons

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The spread of artificial intelligence technology surfaced during sweeping talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on April 26.

A senior US official on Thursday urged China and Russia to match declarations by the United States and others that only humans, and never artificial intelligence, would make decisions on deploying nuclear weapons.

State Department arms control official Paul Dean told an online briefing that Washington had made a “clear and strong commitment” that humans had total control over nuclear weapons, adding that France and Britain had done the same.

“We would welcome a similar statement by China and the Russian Federation,” said Dean, principal deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability.

“We think it is an extremely important norm of responsible behaviour and we think it is something that would be very welcome in a P5 context,” he said, referring to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Dean’s remarks come as the administration of US President Joe Biden tries to deepen separate discussions with China over both nuclear weapons policy and the growth of artificial intelligence.

The Chinese defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The spread of artificial intelligence technology surfaced during sweeping talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on April 26.

The two sides agreed to hold their first bilateral talks on artificial intelligence in the coming weeks, Blinken said, adding that they would share views on how best to manage risks and safety surrounding the technology.

As part of normalising military communications, US and Chinese officials resumed nuclear weapons discussions in January, but formal arms control negotiations are not expected any time soon.

China, which is expanding its nuclear weapons capabilities, urged in February that the largest nuclear powers should first negotiate a no-first-use treaty between each other.

Summary

The investment, the largest in Microsoft’s 32-year history in Malaysia, will include building cloud and AI infrastructure, creating AI-skilling opportunities for 200,000 people, and supporting the country’s developers.

Microsoft said on Thursday it will invest $2.2 billion over the next four years in Malaysia to expand cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services in the company’s latest push to promote its generative AI technology in Asia.

The investment, the largest in Microsoft’s 32-year history in Malaysia, will include building cloud and AI infrastructure, creating AI-skilling opportunities for 200,000 people, and supporting the country’s developers, the company said.

“We want to make sure we have world-class infrastructure right here in the country so that every organisation and start-up can benefit,” Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said during a visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Microsoft will also work with the Malaysian government to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence and enhance the nation’s cybersecurity capabilities, the company said in a statement.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who met Nadella on Thursday, said the investment supported Malaysia’s efforts in developing its AI capabilities.

Microsoft is trying to expand its support for the development of AI globally. Nadella this week announced a $1.7 billion investment in neighbouring Indonesia and said Microsoft would open its first regional data centre in Thailand.

Alphabet paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 for Google to remain default search engine

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The agreement with Apple is the most important of Google’s default deals, since it sets the search engine for the most used smartphone in the US.

Alphabet Inc. paid Apple Inc. $20 billion in 2022 for Google to be the default search engine in the Safari browser, according to newly unsealed court documents in the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuit against Google.

The deal between the two tech giants is at the heart of the landmark case, in which antitrust enforcers allege Google has illegally monopolized the market for online search and related advertising. The Justice Department and Google will offer closing arguments in the case Thursday and Friday, with a decision expected later this year.

Google and Apple had hoped to shield the payment amount from public disclosure. At the trial last fall, Apple executives testified that Google paid “billions,” without specifying a number. A Google witness later accidentally disclosed that Google pays 36% of the revenue it earns from search ads to Apple.

Court documents filed late Tuesday ahead of the closing arguments mark the first public confirmation of the figures by Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue. Such numbers aren’t disclosed by either company in their securities filings. The documents also revealed the importance of the payments to Apple’s bottom line. For instance, in 2020, Google’s payments to Apple constituted 17.5% of the iPhone maker’s operating income.

The agreement with Apple is the most important of Google’s default deals, since it sets the search engine for the most used smartphone in the US.

Apple first agreed to use Google in the Safari browser in 2002 for free. But the companies later decided to share revenue made from search advertising. By May 2021, that translated to Google paying Apple more than $1 billion a month for its default status, prosecutors said in the filing.

Microsoft Corp., which operates competing search engine Bing, has repeatedly tried to entice Apple away from its relationship with Google. The company offered to share 90% of its advertising revenue with Apple to make Bing the default in Safari, according to the court documents. Those figures also weren’t previously disclosed.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella testified at the trial last year that the company was willing to make a number of concessions, including hiding the Bing brand, to persuade Apple to make the switch, which he said would be “game changing.”

“Whomever they choose, they king-make,” Nadella said of Apple.

US newspapers sue OpenAI for copyright infringement over AI training

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The eight newspapers, owned by investment firm Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group, said in the lawsuit that the companies unlawfully copied millions of their articles to train AI products, including Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

A group of newspapers, including the New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune, sued Microsoft and OpenAI in New York federal court on Tuesday, accusing them of misusing reporters’ work to train their generative artificial-intelligence systems.

The eight newspapers, owned by investment firm Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group, said in the lawsuit that the companies unlawfully copied millions of their articles to train AI products, including Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The complaint follows similar ongoing lawsuits against Microsoft and OpenAI, which has received billions in financial backing from Microsoft, brought by the New York Times and news outlets The Intercept, Raw Story and AlterNet.

An OpenAI spokesperson said on Tuesday that the company takes “great care in our products and design process to support news organizations.” A spokesperson for Microsoft declined to comment on the complaint.

The newspaper cases are among several potential landmark lawsuits brought by copyright owners against tech companies over the data used to train their generative AI systems.

A lawyer for the MediaNews publications, Steven Lieberman, told Reuters that OpenAI owed its runaway success to the works of others. The defendants know they have to pay for computers, chips, and employee salaries, but “think somehow they can get away with taking content” without permission or payment, he said.

The lawsuit said Microsoft and OpenAI’s systems reproduce the newspapers’ copyrighted content “verbatim” when prompted. It said ChatGPT also “hallucinates” articles attributed to the newspapers that harm their reputations, including a fake Denver Post article touting smoking as an asthma cure and a bogus Chicago Tribune recommendation for an infant lounger that was recalled after being linked to child deaths.

The plaintiffs also include the Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, Orange County Register and Twin Cities Pioneer Press. They asked the court for unspecified monetary damages and an order blocking any further infringement.
