Satish Kaushik: A ‘Calendar’ beyond just comedy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Truth be told, Satish Kaushik was a wonderful actor who just happened to have impeccable comic timing, something mere mortals like us could not even think of having.

I am currently going through contrasting emotions. On the one hand, it is heartening to see so many admirers of the late Satish Kaushik’s work, but disappointing at the same time to find that this is only restricted to comedy.

The industry is a strange one. There are people who call comedy the most difficult kind of acting but refuse to acknowledge comedians as actors. Every time you read glorifying tributes to the late Mehmood saab or Johnny Walker saab, the captions would read “Veteran Comedian” and not “Veteran Actor”. Satish Kaushik, fortunately or unfortunately, fell into that category courtesy one role, which people still remember him for — Calendar.

90 percent of the tributes to Kaushik on social media referred to him as Calendar. Post Mr. India (1987), the actor left behind a body of work spanning three-and-a-half decades and multiple iconic characters, but Calendar became his synonym.

Truth be told, Satish Kaushik was a wonderful actor who just happened to have impeccable comic timing – something mere mortals like us could not even think of having. Here’s an example:

There’s a five-minute clip on YouTube which you would stumble upon if you type “Sharafat Ali Bade Miyan Chote Miyan”. The scene introduced Kaushik’s character Sharafat Ali in the film. In a scene that had the presence of stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda, Kaushik carried the entire scene on his shoulders with his Bhopali accent, immortalised by the late Jagdeep saab in Sholay. There’s nothing to describe about the scene because words won’t do justice.

Stepping Beyond His Comfort Zone

Comedy was Kaushik’s comfort zone. It earned him name, fame, and countless characters who remain etched in the audiences’ minds even if it was a blink-and-a-miss appearance. But Kaushik was much beyond just his bread-and-butter roles. Very few directors chose to exploit the “actor” Kaushik because the comedian was just fine. Sudhir Mishra in his very early works gave Kaushik an unlikely negative role in Calcutta Mail (2003).

On expected lines, the film did not do well as the audience could not digest Pappu Pager and Kunj Bihari going around killing people for his political ambitions.

As much as he made people laugh on screen, he made them shed copious tears in his earnest portrayal of the titular character in Feroz Abbas Khan’s Salesman Ramlal, which was an adaptation of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. His essay of Manu Mundra in Scam 1992 again proved that he was much beyond just a comedian.

Proving Mettle As Director

Kaushik may have aced comedy as an actor, but he never directed a comedy film. His films usually revolved around sensitive issues and just as he stepped away from his comfort zone, he took his actors out of it too. After essaying glamorous roles in her early career, ‘Miss World’ Aishwarya Rai played a sexual assault survivor in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000), directed by Kaushik. His Tere Naam (2003) gave Salman Khan a new lease of life and made people sit up and take note that he could act too!

Another of Kaushik’s directorial venture, Tere Sang (2008) revolved around teenage pregnancy. A subject of that kind needed sensitive handling, which Kaushik managed deftly. For an audience that loves a Rowdy Rathore, a heavy subject, and that too something considered taboo, did not go down well. Unfortunately, Kaushik as a director turned out to be the “bowler who bowled much better than what his figures suggest.”

There has been a tremendous outpouring of grief on Kaushik’s passing. As is the industry norm, he would now be showered with awards, albeit posthumously, awards will also be named after him, institutions would be opened in his name but the final stage is a hope that he doesn’t meet the fate of his other illustrious peers — that they were forgotten.

I’d end with some irony because I’m about to borrow a line from one of his comic characters and my personal favourite – “Kasam udaan jhalle ki, pichle 9 saal me Sharafat Ali ne is chor bazaar me paisa nahi kamaya, par sharafat se izzat bahot kamai hai.” (I swear by God, I may have not earned money in this market over the last nine years, but I’ve earned a lot of respect.) He certainly did. Go well Satish Ji, the calendar of your work will never have a last page!

Heeraben Modi dies at 100: A look at the life of PM Narendra Modi’s mother

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, Heeraben, died in the early hours of Friday. She was undergoing treatment at UN Mehta Heart Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, Heeraben, died in the wee hours of Friday. She was 100. The prime minister posted a heartfelt tweet informing about her demise and said: “A glorious century rests at the feet of God… In Maa, I have always felt that trinity, which contains the journey of an ascetic, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi and a life committed to values.”

Heeraben was undergoing treatment at UN Mehta Heart Hospital, where she had been admitted since Wednesday. She breathed her last around 3:40 am on Friday, according to a statement by the hospital, News 18 reported.

Heerben Modi: The life of PM Narendra Modi’s mother

“My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers! …Far beyond every tale of deprivation, is the glorious story of a mother…” — this heartfelt note from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on her mother, Heeraben Modi’s birthday in June 2022, had struck a chord with many. In the year 2022, she entered her birth centenary year.

Things took turn for the worse on December 27 when Heeraben Modi’s health condition deteriorated and she was admitted to UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. On December 30, she breathed her last.

Heeraben Modi was born on June 18, 1923, in Visnagar in Mehsana in Gujarat, which is “quite close” to PM Modi’s hometown Vadnagar. She was married to Damodardas Mulchand Modi who was a tea seller, Wion reported. She lived with the Prime Minister’s younger brother Pankaj Modi at Raysan village on the outskirts of Gandhinagar, News 18 reported.

Her “childhood was extremely difficult”, PM Modi wrote in the blog. Emphasising her struggles and sacrifices over the years, the prime minister informed that Heeraben Modi had lost her mother to the Spanish Flu pandemic.

He said his mother “has always inspired” him to have a strong resolve and focus on “garib kalyan”. “Mother has always had immense confidence in me and the samskaras she imparted,” he said.

“In my Mother’s life story, I see the penance, sacrifice, and contribution of India’s matrushakti. Whenever I look at Mother and crores of women like her, I find there is nothing that is unachievable for Indian women,” he wrote in the blog post, expressing gratitude on the occasion of his mother’s 100th birthday.

When PM Modi met his mother…

Whether it was a milestone victory in politics or his birthday or any other significant occasion, PM Modi never forget to meet his mother, touch her feet and take her blessings. In 2014, Narendra Modi became the prime minister for the first time, he rushed to his mother to meet her, videos of which were circulated on social media.

He met his mother on his birthday. He took her blessings when she entered her centenary year on June 18. On her birthday this year, a road in Gandhinagar was decided to be named after her, “to keep her name alive forever and for future generations to learn lessons of service”. An 80-metre road from Raysan Petrol pump was then formally renamed “Pujya Hiraba Marg”.

The last he met was when the Gujarat assembly elections were going on. His dedication and love towards his mother could be seen in the many pictures of the two.

Heeraben Modi had come in a wheelchair to cast her vote at a polling booth in Gandhinagar during the second and final phase of the recently concluded Gujarat polls. The BJP had won big in the elections, retaining yet another historic term in the state.

On May 16, 2016, PM Modi’s mother visited him at this official Race Course Road (RCR) residence, for the first time since he started living there nearly two years back. He wrote: “Spent quality time with my mother after a long time & that too on her 1st visit to RCR.”

Modi had noted that his mother accompanied him only during two of many government or public programmes. “Once, it was at a public function in Ahmedabad when she applied tilak on my forehead after I had returned from Srinagar where I had hoisted the national flag at Lal Chowk completing the Ekta Yatra…The second instance is when I first took oath as Gujarat’s Chief Minister in 2001.”

PM Modi gets emotional

PM Modi became emotional while talking about his mother during a famous interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He said in an interview in 2015: “My dad is no more. My mother took a lot of pain to raise me. She used to clean dishes and work as a labourer. And this is not the case of just one Narendra Modi. A mother will never want you to become something, she will think about how you will achieve that.”

Heeraben Modi, a ‘public’ figure

Heeraben Modi made the headlines in November 2016 when images of her standing at an ATM, supporting her son’s decision of demonetisation, circulated on social media. Last year, she again grabbed the spotlight after getting jabbed with COVID-19 vaccines.

Vikram Gokhale, the actor who knew his craft inside out passes away at 77

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The veteran film, television and theatre actor passed away at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune after prolonged illness

Veteran film, television and theatre actor Vikram Gokhale passed away on November 26 at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune after a prolonged illness. He was 77.

Gokhale was hospitalised earlier in November. His condition initially improved but he subsequently slipped into a coma. On November 23, social media was abuzz with the news of Vikram Gokhale’s death. His family later issued a statement saying the veteran actor’s condition was critical but he was alive. He had suffered a multi-organ failure and was not responding to the treatment as expected.

Gokhale family

Gokhale hails from a family of actors. He was born in 1945 to iconic Marathi film and theatre actor, Chandrakant Gokhale. Chandrakant’s mother Kamalabai Gokhale was the first woman to act on the modern Marathi stage. Kamalabai’s mother Durgabai Kamat was a path-breaker and acted in Mohini Bhasmasur, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke.

Passionate about his art

Despite coming from a family of legends, Vikram Gokhale wore his lineage lightly and carved his own niche by working passionately and building his own repertoire of work. He was known for his tenacity and passion for acting. Last month, while speaking at a book launch, Gokhale said acting was not limited to what an actor depicted on the screen. He said it was essential for an actor to have knowledge of all the arts including paintings, music, and writing as it helps an actor build or create images for the audience. He called this “the rule of theatre”.

Building his own niche

Vikram Gokhale debuted in the Bollywood film industry with Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Parwana’ in 1971. He was 26 years old then.

Many remember him for one of his earliest performances in the 1977 film ‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’. Vikram Gokhale played the role of Lord Krishna in the film which tried to depict an ordinary man’s relationship with God. Movie buffs also remember him for his portrayal of the imposing Collector Jaideep Das Gupta in Amol Palekar’s ‘Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jayein’ in 1990.

Gokhale went on to act in several Marathi and Bollywood films, including the 1999 film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan, where he played the role of an autocratic patriarch.

He is also known for his performances in ‘Agneepath, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Bang Bang’, and ‘Mission Mangal’. Most recently, Vikram Gokhale was seen in Nikhil Mahajan’s Marathi film ‘Godavari’, which was released earlier in November. Gokhale played the role of an ageing patriarch with dementia in the movie.

Gokhale is also a reputed actor in Marathi cinema. In 2010, he won the National Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in the movie ‘Anumati.’

The same year, he made his directorial debut with the film, ‘Aaghaat’. In June this year, Vikram Gokhale was seen in ‘Abhimanyu Dassani’ and Shilpa Shetty-starrer ‘Nikamma’.

Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Vikram Gokhale acted in more than 80 movies and 17 television serials.

On television, one of his most remarkable performances was in Kavita Chowdhury’s 1990-1991 cult series ‘Udaan’. Gokhale played the role of a rebel aristocrat who fights against corruption. He mentors his daughter to become a high-ranking police officer. Gokhale played the role of youth and the patriarch “with the felicity of an actor who knows his craft inside out,” New Indian Express reported.

A man with many dimensions

Vikram Gokhale was a man with many dimensions. Apart from being an actor and a director, he was an accomplished photographer and a social activist. His family runs a charitable foundation which provides financial support to disabled soldiers, children of lepers, and education of orphan children, India Today reported.

Friendship with AB

The two legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and Vikram Gokhale shared both onscreen and offscreen camaraderie. The duo acted in the movies ‘Agneepath’, ‘Khuda Gawah’ and ‘Parwana’. Gokhale, who had known Bachchan for over 55 years, described the superstar as one of the finest actors of Indian cinema. He said most people have only seen his stardom, but he had seen Bachchan during his initial struggles.

“There are many people in the film industry who don’t have any idea of what acting is and they call themselves actors. It is just a show-off. If you want to experience real acting then people must watch Amitabh’s film,” ETimes quoted Gokhale as saying.

Supporting Ranaut

Last year, Vikram Gokhale supported actor Kangana Ranaut’s contention that the independence India attained in 1947 was “bheekh” (alms). She also said India got its ‘real freedom’ in 2014, referring to Narendra Modi being elected as the Prime Minister. Gokhale said that the popular slogan that India attained freedom without shedding blood was an insult to the revolutionaries who were killed or hanged while fighting for the country’s independence.

Following his comments, senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said Gokhale could join a political party like BJP. Reacting to this, the veteran actor said: “My views are my views. They are not dictated by any political parties. All parties are similar,” Indian Express quoted him as saying.
