George Floyd laid to rest after funeral service in Houston

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Dozens of Floyd’s family members, most dressed in white, took part in the four-hour service. One of the singers was Grammy-winning singer Ne-Yo, who sang “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye (To Yesterday).

African-American George Floyd, whose custodial killing stoked widespread protests in the US and other countries over racial injustice, was laid to rest following a funeral service at a church here that was attended by over 500 mourners.

Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after white police officer Derek Chauvin handcuffed and pinned him to the ground, and knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes while the 46-year-old from Houston gasped for breath.

The footage, which went viral, showed Floyd pleading with the officer, saying he can’t breathe. The four police officers seen in the footage have since been charged.

Floyd’s death has sparked nationwide violent protests with some protesters resorting to looting and rioting across the country, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

His body arrived in Houston late on Saturday for funeral service and burial was scheduled for Tuesday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, a white horse-drawn carriage transported Floyd’s golden casket during the final mile of his funeral procession, towards the cemetery, to be buried next to his mother.

The funeral service was attended by over 500 mourners, who remembered him fondly.

The funeral capped six days of mourning for Floyd in three cities: Raeford, North Carolina– near where he was born, Houston– where he grew up and Minneapolis– where he died.

For the last two weeks, Floyd has become a household name and is synonymous with a worldwide movement to end racism.

During Tuesday’s service, a raw glimpse was provided of the man, whose death has sparked a global reckoning over police brutality and racial prejudice.

The intimate service showed the world that beyond the marches and rallies, Floyd was a father, a brother, a nephew, an athlete, a mentor, a friend and now a catalyst for change.

Hundreds gathered along the procession route and outside the cemetery entrance in the heat.

Dozens of Floyd’s family members, most dressed in white, took part in the four-hour service. One of the singers was Grammy-winning singer Ne-Yo, who sang “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye (To Yesterday).

The celebrity mourners also included actors Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, JJ Watt of the NFL’s Houston Texans, rapper Trae tha Truth, Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who brought the crowd to its feet when he announced he will sign an executive order banning chokeholds in the city.

The well-received announcement was greeted with a standing ovation as hundreds of mourners applauded as Turner continued.

“In this city, we will require de-escalation,” Turner said.

“In this city, you have to give a warning before you shoot. In this city, you have a duty to intervene. In this city, we will require comprehensive reporting. In this city, you must exhaust all alternatives before shootings, and there will be other things in this executive order.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden met with Floyd’s family privately on Monday. A video message from him offering condolence was played during the service as he could not attend the funeral on Tuesday.

“I know you have a lot of questions that no child should have to ask, questions that too many black children have had to ask for generations: Why? Why is Daddy gone?” Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, said, addressing Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter in a video eulogy played at the service.

“Now is the time for racial justice. That’s the answer we must give to our children when they ask why,” he said.

While Biden made no mention of his opponent in November, but other speakers took swipes at President Donald Trump, who has ignored demands to address racial bias and has called on authorities to crack down hard on lawlessness.

Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, who doesn’t know how her father died, attended the service with her mother and their attorney.

“Dad changed the world,” she said during a recent demonstration in Minneapolis.

Roxie Washington, Gianna’s mother, said she couldn’t bring herself to explain what happened.

“She said, ‘I hear them. I hear them saying my daddy’s name.’ She doesn’t know what happened. I told her that her dad died because he couldn’t breathe,” Washington said during an interview with “Good Morning America.”

Texas Southern University sought to honour his memory by granting his daughter, Gianna with a full scholarship to study at the university.

The Board (of Regents), in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship to Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna,? the university announced in a press release.

Floyd served nearly five years in prison for robbery with a deadly weapon before becoming a mentor and a church outreach volunteer in Houston.

He moved to Minnesota several years ago through a program that tried to change men’s lives by helping them find work in new settings.

At the time of his death, Floyd was out of work as a bouncer at a Minneapolis club that had closed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

He was seized by police after being accused of passing a counterfeit USD 20 bill at a convenience store.

Four Minneapolis officers were arrested in his death: Derek Chauvin, the 44-year-old police officer, was charged with second-degree murder.

Three others –J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao — were charged with aiding and abetting.

All four could get up to 40 years in prison.

Veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee dead; PM Modi said his work touched people’s heart

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Chatterjee, who is survived by his daughters Sonali Bhattacharya and Rupali Guha, died in his sleep at his Santacruz residence. He was 93.

Veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee, known for his relatable, light as souffl brand of cinema with films such as “Rajnigandha” and Chitchor , died on Thursday following age related health issues. He was 93.

Chatterjee, who is survived by his daughters Sonali Bhattacharya and Rupali Guha, died in his sleep at his Santacruz residence.

“He passed away peacefully in his sleep in the morning. He hadn’t been keeping well for quite a while due to old age problems and died at his residence. It’s a great loss for the film industry,” Ashoke Pandit, president of the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), told PTI.

The last rites of the filmmaker, who blazed a middle-of-the-road trail in the 1970s and 1980s, will be performed at the Santacruz crematorium, Pandit said.

Many people in the film industry and outside condoled the death of the director, who placed the middle class and its everyday joys and struggles at the centre of his cinematic world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet said, “Sad to hear of the demise of Shri Basu Chatterjee. His works are brilliant and sensitive. It touched people’s hearts and represented the simple and complex emotions, as well as struggles of people.”

Extending condolences to Chatterjee’s family and innumerable fans, the prime minister wrote, “Om Shanti.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Saddened at the demise of legendary film director and screenwriter Basu Chatterjee. He gave us gems like ‘Chhoti Si Baat’, ‘Chitchor’, ‘Rajanigandha’, ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, ‘Rajni’ among others. Condolences to his family, friends, fans & the entire film fraternity.”

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta said Chatterjee leaves behind a great legacy of cinema gems.

“Basu Chatterjee moves on. For me very few see the lighter side of life like he did. All his films have a smirk on their faces. I’m a big fan. and I have ‘Kahaani 2’ to prove it,” said Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh said.

Chatterjee began as a cartoonist in a tabloid but changed his career path after assisting Basu Bhattacharya in the Raj Kapoor-Waheeda Rehman starrer Teesri Kasam.

The two Basus along with Hrishikesh Mukherjee formed the Hindi cinema triumvirate whose ethos lay firmly in the middle class and its day-to-day struggles at a time when most of Bollywood was focused on larger-than-life stories of angst and tragedy led by Amitabh Bachchan.

Actors like Vidya Sinha, Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab were the stars that were favoured by Chatterjee to tell aspiring stories of the middle class.

His cinema was progressive for the times, unhurried and a slice of everyday life — about conversations over cups of chai and romances blossoming in public buses, trains and office buildings.

Some of his best known works are “Us Paar”, “Chitchor”, “Piya Ka Ghar”, “Khatta Meetha” and “Baton Baton Mein”.

The filmmaker passed away less than a week after the death of lyricist Yogesh Gaur, who penned many popular songs in Chatterjee’s films, including Rajinigandha Phool Tumhare and Na Jaane Kyun . Gaur died on May 29.

Legendary socialist, press baron MP Veerendra Kumar passes away

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Member of the Loktantrik Janata Dal and President of its Kerala state unit, Veerendra Kumar was also the Managing Director of the second-largest circulated Malayalam daily ‘Mathrubhumi’.

One of Kerala’s tallest socialist leaders MP Veerendra Kumar passed away at a private hospital here on Thursday, said family sources. He was 83.

Veerendra Kumar, a sitting Rajya Sabha member, succumbed to a cardiac arrest.

His last political appearance was when he took part in the meeting, via video conference, called by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss Covid 19 issues with all lawmakers from Kerala two days back.

Member of the Loktantrik Janata Dal and President of its Kerala state unit, Veerendra Kumar was also the Managing Director of the second-largest circulated Malayalam daily ‘Mathrubhumi’.

A voracious reader and also an award-winning writer, he was a highly respected politician not just in Kerala but also in Delhi.

He was in the Kerala Assembly from 1987-1991 and was sworn in as Forest Minister in the cabinet of Left Democratic Front leader E.K. Nayanar but resigned after five days due to differences in his party.

He later contested the Lok Sabha polls and won the Kozhikode Lok Sabha seat in 1996 and became Union Minister of State for Finance and later of Parliamentary Affairs from 1997 to 1998.

Winning the Lok Sabha polls again in 2004, Veerendra Kumar and his then party Janata Dal-United remained part of the LDF till 2009, but shifted to the Congress-led UDF camp after he was denied a chance to recontest the Kozhikode LS seat in the general elections that year.

A nominee of his party was given a Cabinet post when the Oommen Chandy-led UDF government assumed office in 2011.

Veerendra Kumar lost the 2014 Lok Sabha polls by over one lakh votes and since then he was unhappy with the UDF. However, the UDF kept him happy by offering him a Rajya Sabha seat in 2016 and when he had decided to quit it late next year, he put in his resignation from the Upper House.

Later, he rejoined the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front, who allowed him to contest the Rajya Sabha polls and he became a member again in 2018.

Former Defence Minister A.K. Antony said he has lost a close friend and a “teacher”.

“When I was the President of the Kerala Students Union in 1964, I met him first and thus began a long journey with him, even though we belonged to different parties. It was just two days back I spoke to him and he looked cheerful. Now the reality is he is no more, I have lost a close friend,” said Antony.

Chandy said that Veerendra Kumar was a multifaceted personality and excelled in whatever roles he played.

“He had several caps and in every field he was a shining star and was a hugely successful person.. We, in our political journey, at times were together and at times, we were in the opposite camps, but I had the highest regards for him always,” he added.

Veerendra Kmuar’s son M.P.Shreyams Kumar, a former two-time legislator, is the joint Managing Director of the Mathrubhumi Group.

Kumar hailed from the hilly district of Wayanad and was a Jain by religion.

Indian-origin father-daughter doctor duo die of COVID-19 in US

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“Dr. Satyender Dev Khanna and Dr. Priya Khanna were father and daughter. They both dedicated their lives to helping others. This is a family dedicated to health and medicine. Our words cannot amply express our condolences,” New Jersey Governor Murphy tweeted on Thursday.

An Indian-American father and daughter, both doctors in New Jersey, have died due to the COVID-19, with Governor Phil Murphy describing their demise as particularly tough” and hailed them for dedicating their lives for others.

Satyender Dev Khanna, 78, was a surgeon who served both on staff and as the head of the surgical departments for multiple hospitals across New Jersey for decades.

Priya Khanna, 43, was a double board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology. She was Chief of Residents at Union Hospital, now part of RWJ Barnabas Health.

“Dr. Satyender Dev Khanna and Dr. Priya Khanna were father and daughter. They both dedicated their lives to helping others. This is a family dedicated to health and medicine. Our words cannot amply express our condolences,” New Jersey Governor Murphy tweeted on Thursday.

Both dedicated their lives to helping others and we lost both of them to COVID-19, Murphy said during a press conference on Thursday, saying their demise is a “particularly tough one.

Satyender passed away at the Clara Maass Medical Center where he had worked for more than 35 years.

Murphy described him as a “pioneering doctor who was one of the first surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgery in the state. He is being remembered by colleagues as a gentle and caring physician.”

And for a doctor, I’m not one, but I would bet, I don’t think there could be a more fitting way to be remembered, or a nurse or a healthcare worker of any kind, Murphy said, adding that the doctor had a passion for bicycling, and he often found peace from the hustle of the hospital in biking along the Jersey Shore.

Priya did all of her medical training in New Jersey and then did her fellowship in nephrology in South Jersey with the Cooper Health System.

Like her father, she too worked at Clara Maass, where she died.

She was also Medical Director at two dialysis centers in Essex County and took pride in teaching the next generation of doctors, Murphy said, adding that the ICU physician who cared for Priya Khanna was trained and taught by her as well.

Priya will be remembered as a caring and selfless person who put others first. And even while in the hospital, fighting her own battle, she continued to check up on her mom and dad and her family, Murphy said.

This is a family, by the way, dedicated to health and medicine, he said.

The governor spoke with Satyender’s wife Komlish Khanna, who is a pediatrician. The couple has two more daughters – Sugandha Khanna, an emergency medicine physician and Anisha Khanna, a pediatrician.

Unbelievable. Our words cannot amply express our condolences nor, I am sure, can they express the pain that the Khanna family is feeling. But I hope that the fact that our entire state mourns with them is some small comfort. And we mourn everyone we have lost. We commit in their memory to saving as many lives as we can, Murphy said.

The death of a Dubai-based Indian industrialist, who died after falling from a high-rise building last week, was a case of suicide over financial problems, police confirmed after an investigation, according to a media report.

Joy Arakkal, who hailed from Kerala and was the managing director of Dubai-headquartered Innova Group of Companies which had diverse businesses, with major focus in the oil sector, committed suicide on April 23 by jumping from the 14th floor of a friend”s building in Business Bay, Dubai police told Gulf News on Wednesday.

“The businessman committed suicide over financial problems,” Brigadier Abdullah Khadim Bin Sorour, director of Bur Dubai Police Station, said, ruling out any criminal suspicion behind the death.

Police said they are coordinating with the businessman’s family for the repatriation of his body.

Arakkal is survived by his wife and two children who live in Jumeirah.

Consul General of India in Dubai Vipul told Gulf News that Arakkal’s family is set to fly home with his body after Indian authorities gives them special permission to travel in a chartered air ambulance.

“They have received the NOCs (No Objection Certificates) from India. We have taken it up with the UAE MoFAIC (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) for necessary permits from the UAE side,” Vipul said.

Once the approval is received, a chartered air ambulance will fly in from Bangalore to carry the family and the mortal remains of Arakkal.

A few social workers and community leaders, who were coordinating with Arakkal’s family for the repatriation procedures, attended the embalming service on Tuesday.

Arakkal’s’s funeral will be held in his hometown in Mananthavady in Wayanad district.

His companies include oil refineries, petrochemical trading, ISO tank cleaning services, shipping services and a telecom company working for infrastructure projects in the UAE.

He had received many awards including a lifetime achievement award from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during his visit to Dubai.
