181 academicians, VCs accuse Rahul Gandhi of spreading falsehood over appointment process

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“Rahul Gandhi has resorted to falsehood and has defamed the Office of the Vice Chancellors at large with the intent to derive political mileage out of it. It is, therefore, earnestly prayed that appropriate action be taken against him forthwith in accordance with law,” academicians said.

As many as 181 academicians, including vice chancellors (VC)and former VCs, have accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of spreading “falsehood” regarding the appointment process for university heads. They slammed Gandhi’s allegations that vice chancellors are appointed solely on the basis of affiliation with some organisation rather than merit.

In an open letter slamming Gandhi’s claims, they said the process by which VCs are selected is characterised by stringent and transparent rigorous procedure grounded in the values of meritocracy, scholarly distinction and integrity. The selection has been completely based on academic and administrative prowess and with a vision to take universities ahead, they said.

“Rahul Gandhi has resorted to falsehood and has defamed the Office of the Vice Chancellors at large with the intent to derive political mileage out of it. It is, therefore, earnestly prayed that appropriate action be taken against him forthwith in accordance with law,” they said.

They said universities in India have undergone a significant transition as evident in their ascent in global rankings, prominent accreditations, world class research and innovations, curriculum facelift narrowing the industry academia gap and higher placement prospects reaffirming their commitment to academic quality and societal relevance.

“The array of academic disciplines and professional experiences represented amongst us stands as evidence of the unbiased and inclusive nature of the selection procedure,” they said. The academics said in their letter that as guardians of knowledge and administrators of academia, they maintain an unwavering commitment to maintaining the utmost levels of governance integrity, ethical behaviour, and institutional integrity.

Urging everyone involved to exercise discernment in distinguishing fact from fiction, to abstain from spreading unfounded rumours, they called for dialogue that is well-informed, constructive, and supportive of their shared goal of creating a dynamic and inclusive educational environment.

India widens spices crackdown with nationwide checks on all manufacturers

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Indian regulator has now ordered officials to conduct “extensive inspections, sampling and testing at all the manufacturing units” for powdered spices, with a focus on those making curry powders and mixed spice blends for local and foreign sales.

India’s food safety regulator said on Thursday, May 2, it had ordered nationwide testing and inspections at all companies making spice mixes, widening a crackdown on the sector as global regulators investigate contamination issues with two popular local brands.

In April, Hong Kong suspended sales of three spice blends made by India’s MDH and an Everest spice mix for fish curry. Singapore ordered a recall of the same Everest mix as well, flagging high levels of ethylene oxide, which is unfit for human consumption and a cancer risk with long exposure.

MDH and Everest products are hugely popular in India and also sold in Europe, Asia and North America, and the companies have said they are safe. Still, US and Australian food authorities said they are gathering more information on the matter, and India had already ordered testing of the two brands’ products.

The Indian regulator has now ordered officials to conduct “extensive inspections, sampling and testing at all the manufacturing units” for powdered spices, with a focus on those making curry powders and mixed spice blends for local and foreign sales.

“Each of the product sampled will be analysed for the compliance with quality and safety parameters,” the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said in a statement.

The agency added checks would also be made for any presence of ethylene oxide, whose use is banned in India, and “appropriate actions will be initiated as fit” after testing was completed.

India is the world’s biggest exporter, producer and consumer of spices, and its domestic market for the products was valued at $10.44 billion in 2022, according to Zion Market Research.

Beyond MDH and Everest, other major manufacturers include Madhusudan Masala, NHC Foods and consumer giants Tata Consumer Products and ITC.

Garg highlighted the role of models like the Creta, Venue, and Exter in driving growth, with SUVs contributing to 67% of the automaker’s domestic sales.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has reported a 32% year-on-year increase in total sales for April, with 20,494 units sold compared to 15,510 units in the same month the previous year. The company’s domestic sales accounted for the majority of these sales, with 18,700 units sold last month. Meanwhile, exports totalled 1,794 units.

This growth was achieved despite a week-long maintenance shutdown from April 6, which was necessary for the upkeep of machinery and equipment to sustain operational efficiencies, productivity, and safety, according to the company.

MG Motors India

MG Motors India has reported a slight 1.45% year-on-year decline in retail sales for April, with 4,485 units sold compared to 4,551 units in the same month the previous year.

The company highlighted the significant role of its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, which contributed to 34% of the total units sold during this period.

Ola Electric

Ola Electric has expanded its market share to over 50% in April, selling 33,934 electric two-wheelers, despite a broader 52% slump in overall EV two-wheeler sales to 64,013 units from the preceding month, according to data from the Vahan website.

This overall decline in sales is attributed to April being a seasonally slow sales period and demand tapering down post-festive season. However, Ola Electric’s sales have also come down by 34.8% month-on-month. Last year in April, Ola Electric sold nearly 22,068 units.

TVS Motor sales up 25% in April at 3,83,615 units

Samsung Galaxy M55 Review: An impressive midranger

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy M55 5G is a reliable mid-range phone with a vibrant display, good performance for everyday use, long battery life, and a decent camera system, making it a strong contender in its price range. The green colour is an added bonus.

The smartphone market is flooded with options, especially within the competitive mid-range segment. Samsung’s Galaxy M-series has carved out a niche by delivering solid, well-rounded devices at value-focused prices. The Galaxy M55 5G carries that tradition forward, offering a mix of reliable performance, long battery life, and a vibrant display.

Pricing and storage variants

RAM Storage Price
8 GB 128 GB ₹26,999.00
256 GB ₹29,999.00
12 GB 256 GB ₹32,999.00

Design & construction

Samsung opts for a polycarbonate (plastic) build for the Galaxy M55 5G. While it doesn’t exude the premium feel of glass and metal, it’s a practical choice that helps keep costs down. The glossy finish is unfortunately a major fingerprint magnet — you’ll likely want to use a case. On the plus side, the green colour — which I got for review — shimmers beautifully under light, offering a visual flair rarely seen in this price range. The minimalist design language with smooth curves makes the phone comfortable to hold despite its larger size.

Display: A visual treat

One of the standout features of the Galaxy M55 5G is its 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ display. Samsung is renowned for its screen technology — and it shows. The colours are vibrant and punchy, the blacks are deep, and the viewing angles are excellent. The 120Hz refresh rate makes everything from scrolling through social media feeds to playing compatible games feel incredibly smooth and responsive. Outdoor visibility is decent, even under bright sunlight.

Performance: Enough power for the essentials

The Galaxy M55 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor paired with ample RAM. This setup ensures that everyday tasks like web browsing, email, social media, and light gaming run without hiccups. While it won’t challenge premium flagship phones, the performance is perfectly acceptable for most users. However, if you’re an avid mobile gamer who plays the most graphically demanding titles, you might occasionally encounter some stuttering or slowdown.

Cameras: Versatile but not extraordinary

The Galaxy M55 5G sports a quad-camera system on the rear: A 50MP primary sensor, an ultrawide lens, a macro sensor, and a depth sensor. This versatile setup caters to various shooting scenarios.

In good lighting conditions, the main camera captures images with pleasing colours and decent detail. The ultrawide lets you fit more into the frame, perfect for landscapes or group shots. As expected, low-light performance takes a hit, with noticeable noise and loss of detail. The front-facing camera performs adequately for selfies and video calls. Overall, the camera experience is in line with what’s typical at this price point.

Battery Life: A marathon runner

Packing a massive 5,000mAh battery, the Galaxy M55 5G is a battery champ. Most users will comfortably get through a full day of usage, even with heavy social media scrolling, video streaming, and some light gaming thrown in.

With more conservative use, it’s possible to stretch things into two-day territory. The included 25W fast charging could be faster, but it’s still reasonable, bringing you back to full capacity in a little over an hour.

Software: One UI Done Right

The Galaxy M55 5G runs Samsung’s One UI software based on Android. One UI has evolved into one of the most polished Android skins, offering a clean aesthetic, useful features, and minimal bloatware. It’s a testament to Samsung’s commitment to software that the M55 5G is promised several years of major Android updates and security patches, ensuring the device remains up-to-date and secure.

In conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy M55 5G delivers a compelling mix of solid performance, long battery life, and a gorgeous display. It’s not going to win awards for raw power or groundbreaking camera features, but it’s a dependable all-rounder that covers the essentials exceptionally well. If you’re searching for a value-driven mid-ranger with some personality, the Galaxy M55 5G deserves serious consideration.

“The scooter is stylish but also functional. Fastest charging time and lightweight with a touchscreen. It is good for performance and also for the environment. That’s why we call it the next big thing,” Kumar said.

The Nexus, which replaces the Primus in the lineup, retains some design elements from the NXG concept but opts for a conventional swing arm instead of the single-sided one seen in the concept.

The scooter, entirely designed and manufactured in India, comes in four vibrant colours, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences. The colours are inspired by India’s history and accomplishments – Zanskar Blue, Lunar White, Steel Grey, and Indian Red.

The scooter gets a telescopic fork and dual rear shock absorbers, with a seat length of 712 mm and a seat height of 765 mm. It also has a wheelbase of 1,319 mm, 170 mm of ground clearance and 235 mm of floorboard space. The Nexus has a front disc brake, a rear drum brake and 12-inch alloy wheels as standard.

One of its standout features is its versatility, offering five different riding modes, including a reverse mode, and an IP67 rating for navigating diverse terrains and climates. The scooter also boasts a remarkable CMVR-certified range of 136 km per charge, allowing riders to explore more without frequent recharging. The charging time is rated at 3 hours and 30 minutes, but a fast charger will be available as an option.

“The launch of Ampere Nexus high-speed electric scooter marks a momentous achievement in our commitment to sustainable transportation. This transition from leisurely to urban to high-speed models signifies a pivotal moment in our journey. With each stride forward in democratising e-mobility, we progress toward a more inclusive, sustainable future. The Ampere Nexus stands ready for those ready to Take Charge of their daily aspirations,” said Kumar.

The launch of the Ampere Nexus follows a notable pre-launch expedition, where it achieved several records, including the longest electric scooter ride spanning over 10,000 kilometres in a single journey. The scooter also made headlines by towing a pickup truck and setting a record for creating the largest electric scooter brand logo on white sand.
