INDIA bloc to win Lok Sabha polls, BJP will not even cross 200 seats: Mamata

Summary

Mamata Banerjee accused Congress and CPI(M) of having entered into a nexus with BJP in the state to discredit the state government and asked the electorate not to vote for any non-TMC parties which will benefit the saffron camp.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed that the INDIA bloc will come to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and BJP will “not cross the 200 mark” in the polls.

She accused Congress and CPI(M) of having entered into a nexus with BJP in the state to discredit the state government and asked the electorate not to vote for any non-TMC parties which will benefit the saffron camp.

Addressing an election rally at Goghat under the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency, Banerjee said, “I had coined the name INDIA and at the national level we the coalition partners are all working together to resist the autocratic, demonic Narendra Modi government. TMC will play its role in installing the INDIA bloc to power.”

“See what Modi is telling now he is no more making tall ‘400 paar’ seats by BJP. He can read the writing on the wall already. BJP will not cross even 200 tally. BJP will bite the dust,” she said.

Banerjee alleged that CPI(M), Congress and other Left partners in West Bengal have entered into a ‘mahaghot’ (unprincipled nexus) with BJP just to discredit the ruling TMC which is the only party against Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in the state.

The TMC supremo also slammed CPI(M) for allegedly committing mass murders at places like Goghat and Sihar during its rule and claimed only she as then opposition leader had dared to face the “Marxist terror at that time braving her life.”

“I know the true face of CPI(M) in Bengal,” she added. Describing Modi and Shah as “anti-Bengal”, she said, “His issuing advertisements in media to profess his love for the state won’t cut much ice with the residents of the state who knows these BJP heavyweight leaders will never understand our ethos and sentiments.”

Banerjee accused Modi and Shah of using doctored, false images of Matuas in one such ad gloating over CAA benefits. Reiterating her allegations about BJP concocting the charges of atrocities against TMC leaders on women of Sandeshkhali, she said, “They made some of the poor, unsuspecting women sign on blank papers and incorporated charges of sexual misconduct in the complaint later.”

She cautioned the voters and the security personnel by alleging that the BJP had planned to remove idols from temples in Sandeshkhali and elsewhere and engineer riots to get votes by dividing people.

In a conciliatory tone, she added: If there had been stray incidents of mistake, those have been rectified and corrective actions taken on our part. Today’s generation might not be aware of the magnitude of atrocities committed on people and political opponents by the CPIM in its reign which had never been addressed by their administration.

The goons of the CPI(M) have changed colours and now working for the BJP, the TMC supremo claimed. At the second rally in Bishnupur Lok Sabha seat, Banerjee mentioned Modi’s comments on alleged consumption of fish by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav during Navratri.

She said, Who are you (Modi) to lecture us whether to eat meat, fish or egg? Let everyone eat what he/she likes. Banerjee said every state has its own culinary and dietary tradition and the PM and his party have no right to impose diktat on the people of a region in a country like India.

Claiming that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been asking people to invest in shares to boost the stock market, she accused the BJP heavyweight of violating the model code of conduct (MCC). Terming Modi as a jumla PM who only spreads misinformation and gives false promises, she said he had promised two crore jobs every year in the last polls.

So the total number would go up to 10 crore. How many actually get the jobs promised by Modi? Why is he not repeating the same promise this time?… I have not seen such a jumla government in my entire political life, Banerjee said. She accused the prime minister of plotting to divide the nation along religious lines and plundering assets of the country.

Banerjee charged Modi with trying to change the pluralistic values and secular ideals enshrined in the constitution and change the name of India to Bharat. “This has become more pronounced since we named the opposition bloc INDIA,” she said. Banerjee also promised once the INDIA bloc comes to power after the polls, measures will be initiated to scrap the CAA and NRC and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Accusing the BJP of using central agencies to frame TMC leaders in coal and cattle smuggling cases, she said, Who is in charge of border security? Why will Union Home Minister Amit Shah not be arrested if there are such cases of smuggling? Banerjee alleged that BJP is trying to influence monks but that plan will not succeed.

Stating that her government had helped Rama Krishna Mission to renovate the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda in north Kolkata, she said, I have regular contacts with monastic organizations and that will remain forever. I have great respect for them.

In a dig at sitting BJP MP from Bisnupur and party’s candidate Saumitra Khan, Banerjee accused him of amassing huge properties during his five-year tenure but not doing anything to secure the money under 100 days’ central project for the job card holders in three years. Modi, like an emperor, comes to campaign in a luxury aircraft and leaves while she uses a small hired helicopter, she claimed.

FSSAI asks fruit traders, food biz not to use banned product ‘calcium carbide’ for fruit ripening

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it has “alerted traders’/fruits handlers/Food Business Operators (FBOs) operating ripening chambers to strictly ensure compliance with the prohibition on calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits, particularly during the mango season”.

Food regulator FSSAI has asked traders and food business operators not to use the banned product ‘calcium carbide’ for ripening of fruits.

In an official statement, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it has “alerted traders’/fruits handlers/Food Business Operators (FBOs) operating ripening chambers to strictly ensure compliance with the prohibition on calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits, particularly during the mango season”.

FSSAI has also advised Food Safety Departments of states/UTs to remain vigilant and take serious action and deal stringently against person(s) indulging in such unlawful practices as per the provisions of the FSS Act, 2006, and rules/regulations made thereunder.

“Calcium carbide, commonly used for ripening fruits like mangoes, releases acetylene gas, which contains harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus.

Also Read: FSSAI orders probe against Nestle and other baby food manufacturers, say sources

“These substances, also known as ‘Masala’, can cause serious health issues such as dizziness, frequent thirst, irritation, weakness, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting and skin ulcers, etc,” FSSAI said. Additionally, acetylene gas is equally hazardous to those handling it.

“There are chances that calcium carbide may come in direct contact with fruits during application and leave residues of arsenic and phosphorus on fruits,” the regulator said.

Due to these dangers, the use of calcium carbide for ripening fruits has been banned under the Regulation of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011.

This regulation explicitly states, “No person shall sell or offer or expose for sale or have in his premises for the purpose of sale under any description, fruits which have been artificially ripened by use of acetylene gas, commonly known as carbide gas”.

Also Read: FSSAI to conduct a broader quality check on spices brands amid MDH, Everest scrutiny: Sources

Considering the issue of rampant use of banned calcium carbide, FSSAI has permitted the use of ethylene gas as a safer alternative for fruit ripening in India. Ethylene gas can be used at concentrations up to 100 ppm, depending upon the crop, variety and maturity.

Ethylene, a naturally occurring hormone in fruits, regulates the ripening process by initiating and controlling a series of chemical and biochemical activities. The treatment of unripe fruits with ethylene gas triggers the natural ripening process until the fruit itself starts producing ethylene in substantial quantities.

Further, the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIB & RC) have approved Ethephon 39 per cent SL for the uniform ripening of mangoes and other fruits.

BJP is planning to ban RSS, says Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“The way they tried to use and throw the Shiv Sena, a similar game will be played by Narendra Modi in future (with the RSS), and that has been stated by (BJP president J P) Nadda,” Uddhav Thackeray said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was planning to ban its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), after winning a third term in power.

Speaking at his last rally before the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections ended in Maharashtra, Thackeray also said that the Election Commissioner who was “acting like Modi’s servant” will be removed after the INDIA alliance government comes to power.

“The way they tried to use and throw the Shiv Sena, a similar game will be played by Narendra Modi in future (with the RSS), and that has been stated by (BJP president J P) Nadda,” he said.

Thackeray was referring to Nadda’s comments to a newspaper that when the BJP was a small party and less capable, it needed the RSS, but now the saffron party has grown, become more capable, and “runs itself”.

“Nadda said there was a need of the RSS until now, (but) we are capable now and we don’t need the RSS. If they (BJP) came to power, it is a bigger danger for RSS workers because they will ban the RSS,” Thackeray claimed. In the past, (then Union home minister) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the RSS, he noted.

“Those who call our party ‘nakli’ (fake) Shiv Sena will call the Sangh ‘nakli’,” Thackeray further said, referring to Prime Minister Modi’s jibe at the Sena (UBT).

“The entire RSS cadre toils to make you prime minister. Why are you planning to ban the RSS which gave you birth and gave you political power,” Thackeray asked.

He also took a swipe at the Election Commission, stating that “after the INDIA alliance government comes to power, we have to send home the election commissioner who is acting like Modi’s servant.” Whoever is working like the BJP regime’s “servant” will be sacked, the former Maharashtra chief minister said.

Punjab Lok Sabha elections: Complete list of Congress candidates

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Punjab, which comprises 13 parliamentary constituencies, is all set to vote for the 2024 general elections in a single phase on June 1, followed by the counting of votes on June 4.

Two years after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defeated Congress in Punjab Assembly elections, the grand old party is attempting to regain its lost glory in the border state. The stage is set and it’s the Lok Sabha elections where AAP and Congress — part of the INDIA bloc — are going solo.

Punjab, which comprises 13 parliamentary constituencies, is all set to vote for the 2024 general elections in a single phase on June 1, followed by the counting of votes on June 4.

During the 2019 polls, the grand old party emerged victorious in Punjab, bagging eight of the 13 Lok Sabha seats, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with just two seats each, while the remaining constituency went to the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

However, the Congress has witnessed the departure of several veteran leaders, including former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, his wife and sitting Patiala MP Preneet Kaur, the party’s former state unit president Sunil Jakhar and two-time Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, to the BJP.

During the 2022 Assembly polls, AAP registered a landslide victory, getting 92 of the 117 seats in the state. Congress could only manage 18 seats, while three went to the SAD, two to BJP and one each to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and an Independent candidate.

BJP and SAD, the two former allies, earlier failed to reach a common ground and they too are going solo in these polls.

As a result, the state this time is witnessing a multi-cornered contest between the Congress, AAP, the BJP and SAD.

Punjab Lok Sabha elections: Voting dates

In Punjab, polling for the 2024 general elections will be held during the last phase on June 1. All the seats in the state will vote in a single phase.

During the 2019 elections, the state witnessed a total voter turnout of 65.94%.

Punjab Lok Sabha elections: Total seats

In total, Punjab has 13 parliamentary constituencies, of which four seats are reserved for the SC candidates, while the remaining nine are unreserved.

Punjab Lok Sabha elections: Congress candidates

After a strong performance in the last elections, the Congress is hopeful of yet another dominating show in Punjab in the 2024 polls. Here’s a complete list of candidates announced by the grand old party in Punjab:

Renowned Indian banker Padma Bhushan Narayanan Vaghul dies at 88

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Narayanan Vaghul, acclaimed for his instrumental role in shaping ICICI Bank, received the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2009.

Narayanan Vaghul, former Chairman of ICICI Bank and a transformative figure in Indian banking, passed away this afternoon in Chennai at the age of 88. He had been on ventilator support at Apollo Hospital Chennai before his death.

Often hailed as the father of modern Indian banking, Vaghul was instrumental in laying the foundation of ICICI Bank. His illustrious career began at the State Bank of India, where his talents quickly propelled him from a regional branch in Chennai to the central office in Bombay.

Vaghul’s career took a significant turn during his sabbatical at the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), where he was appointed director within two years. By 39, he was named executive director of the Central Bank of India, and at 44, he became the youngest Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank of India in 1981.

In 1985, Vaghul assumed leadership of ICICI Bank Limited, one of India’s leading development banks. His 24-year tenure at ICICI was marked by visionary leadership and mentorship. He played a crucial role in grooming future leaders like K V Kamath, who succeeded him as chairman in 2009, as well as many others like Kalpana Morparia and Shikha Sharma, who went on to prominent roles in the banking sector.

Beyond his banking prowess, Vaghul was deeply committed to philanthropy. He was a driving force behind several charitable organizations, including Pratham, GiveIndia, and the Azim Premji Foundation, which focus on education, health, and livelihoods.

In an earlier interview with Forbes, Vaghul reflected on his modest upbringing: “I was in a family of 16 people. And it was quite normal for someone or the other to go hungry… I think I looked at society, and maybe even the country, as a reflection of my own family.”

In recognition of his contributions to trade and industry, Vaghul was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2010.

Narayanan Vaghul is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. His legacy as a pioneering banker and compassionate philanthropist endures.

Raghav Chadha back in India, visits Kejriwal’s residence amid Swati Maliwal assault controversy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

Raghav Chadha visited CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence in his first public appearance after returning from the United Kingdom. Chadha’s visit comes amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged assault of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha made his first public appearance in months on Saturday as he was seen arriving at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal‘s official residence in Delhi.

On Saturday morning, Chadha was seen entering Kejriwal’s residence in the national capital.

After returning from the United Kingdom, Chadha’s visit to the Delhi CM’s residence comes amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged assault of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal.

According to the party, Chadha was in the UK for an eye surgery. While he stayed away from party affairs for a long duration, questions were raised over his absence.

However, the party stated that he would be back once he recovers.

“Raghav Chadha has undergone major eye surgery in the UK. It is said that his condition was serious and there was a possibility of blindness. As soon as he gets better, he will come back to India and join us in the election campaigning,” Delhi Minister and AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj told PTI last month.

Chadha, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, had been missing from the party’s election campaigning for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the last few months.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police officials on Saturday arrested Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar in connection with the alleged assault case.

Bibhav Kumar was picked up from the chief minister’s official residence by a Delhi Police team around noon, a senior police officer informed, adding that he had been taken to the police station for interrogation.

This came after Swati Maliwal’s medical report suggested that she has bruises over her left leg dorsal and right cheek. Earlier this week, Maliwal had filed an FIR against Kumar for assaulting her at the Chief Minister’s residence.

As per the FIR details, Maliwal alleged that she was hit by Kumar with “full force again and again” and was even “kicked and slapped seven to eight times”.

Her medical examination was conducted on Friday.

ISRO chairman S Somanath advocates for libraries in temples to attract youth

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

ISRO Chairman Somanath said temples should not only be places where elderly people come for nama japa (chanting the name of God), but they should also become places for “transforming society.”

ISRO Chairman S Somanath on Saturday advocated for setting up libraries in temples, stating that such an initiative would help attract youngsters to places of worship.

Speaking after receiving an award instituted by the Sree Udiyannoor Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Somanath said temples should not only be places where elderly people come for nama japa (chanting the name of God), but they should also become places for “transforming society.”

He urged temple management to work towards attracting youngsters to temples.

“I expected youngsters in large numbers at this award presentation ceremony, but somehow their numbers are considerably low. Temple managements should work towards attracting them to the temples. Why not set up libraries in temples?” he asked after receiving the award from former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair.

He said that such an initiative would help attract youth to temples where they could read, discuss various issues in the evenings, and develop their careers.

“If the temple managements work in that direction, it would bring big changes,” Somanath said. Former Chief Secretary K Jayakumar and V K Prasanth MLA were among the dignitaries who attended the function.
