How hiring at top IT firms in India has changed over two years

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

In the first quarter of 2022-2023, India’s top five tech companies combined — Infosys, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra — added a net headcount of more than 59,700. But this was much lower than what was recorded in the past two quarters. Here’s how IT hiring trend is changing amid high attrition rates.

The IT sector continues to be one of the biggest recruiters, attracting talent from the country. But the fight is becoming tough by the day.

In the first quarter of 2022-2023, India’s top five tech companies — Infosys, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra — added a combined headcount of more than 59,700.

But this was much lower than employees hired in the preceding two quarters — 65,011 in the October-December period and 85,820 in the January-March quarter of FY22.

This is at a time when attrition remains high for three out of the five companies, and HRs across the industry have been suggesting that they want the right talent, not just more headcount.

The top five IT companies are undertaking programmes to add another 100,000 people to their workforce this year.

“Since the market is humongous for the IT contenders, HR departments must prepare this year for a non-stop war for skill,” Siva Prasad Nanduri, the chief business officer of TeamLease Digital, told CNBC-TV18.com.

Also Read: There are early signals in IT hiring slowdown amid recession concerns, warns TeamLease

Jang Bahadur Singh, director and industry lead – technology, Human Capital Solutions at Aon, thinks the COVID-19 pandemic proved as an accelerator, pushing firms to scale digital capabilities across sectors from financial services to retail to e-commerce, etc.

This meant a huge windfall for IT services and consulting firms such as TCS, Infosys, etc. Most of these firms were not staffed to cater to such a huge uptick in demand, and with a downsized bench, he explained that they had to aggressively buy talent.

“Further record high attrition at an average of 24 percent and above in this space put more pressure on talent acquisition, which is reflected in metrics such as offer decline rates, increases offered to new joiners, etc.,” he said.

Also Read: What Wipro is doing right to ease attrition issues — other IT firms might want to take notes

Nanduri said in 2021, the tech job market was already tight. There were more job openings published than candidates available.

“2022 will not be any easier. More companies have started using Artificial Intelligence and virtual recruiting tools, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion and moving their talent acquisition efforts to remote candidates,” he said. Nanduri also pointed to the rise of gig workers.

Singh said he had observed a twin-pronged strategy for IT hiring in a challenging environment. In the short term, the IT firms have aggressively bought lateral, skilled talent and have been willing to a pay premium for the same, he said.

Also Read: Upskilling may be the only way to survive layoffs, say experts

Additionally, he said that firms have gone aggressive on campuses, with large players hiring north of 50,000 freshers as part of a long-term build phase. “We also see firms reinvesting in building a ready bench of talent to mitigate future such supply challenges.”

2 years of NEP: Amit Shah launches skill initiatives, UGC portal with over 23,000 free courses to go live soon

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

On the second anniversary of the National Education Policy 2020, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched a slew of education and skill development initiatives on Friday.

On the second anniversary of the National Education Policy introduced in 2020 as a guide, union home minister Amit Shah and union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched a slew of education and skill development initiatives on Friday

“PM Modi’s National Education Policy is laying the foundation for a strong and self-reliant future by bringing revolutionary changes in the education sector of the country…The purpose of education is to develop character, empathy, courage and to prepare students to deal with the challenges of life,” Shah said at an event in New Delhi.

NEP replaced the 10+2 structure of school curriculum with a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to age groups 3-8, 8-11, 11-14 and 14-18 years respectively and scrapped M.Phil programmes and implemented common norms for private and public higher education institutions.

According to the home minister, NEP 2020 is gaining unprecedented acceptance from the entire nation, which shows that the policy is in sync with the roots of the nation. “It represents the aspirations of our students, teachers and parents,” he said.

Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) earlier said it will launch over 23,000 higher education courses, including programmes on artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security and early childhood care, free of cost on a new web portal from Friday. The portal is aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing the accessibility of higher education in remote parts of the country, it said.

The UGC has tied up with the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) to integrate the e-resources with their over 7.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSC) and Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Centres to offer these courses from the forthcoming academic session of 2022-23.

The tie-up with the MeitY is done to integrate the e-resources of the ministry, which include roughly 7.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

These centres, spread across the country, will help the portal reach the maximum number of people and provide the desired benefit to the rural areas of the country. The courses will be offered in Hindi, Tamil, Bangla, Marathi, Gujrati, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, and English.

M Jagadesh Kumar, UGC chairman explained to PTI that the courses will include 137 SWAYAM MOOC in emerging areas, apart from the 23,000 higher education courses. SWAYAM is India’s national MOOC platform. It offers over 2,150 courses taught by close to 1,300 instructors from over 135 Indian universities.

Kumar said, “The CSCs and SPVs are being managed and operated by entrepreneurs who belong to the local community and are referred to as village level entrepreneurs (VLEs).” The VLEs will operate and manage the centres that are honed with computers and internet connectivity.

Although the courses are free, users will have to pay either Rs 20 a day or Rs 500 a month to reimburse the cost of the infrastructure and the efforts of the VLEs.

“This is similar to other government projects like Ayushman Bharat Yojana, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, e-Shram, Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PMSYM), and many others,” said Kumar.

Ola may lay off 1,000 employees to ramp up EV plans: Reports

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

As Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola aims to ramp up its electric vehicle (EV) business, media reports have claimed that the ride-hailing platform is laying off around 1,000 employees from across verticals.

As Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola aims to ramp up its electric vehicle (EV) business, media reports have claimed that the ride-hailing platform is laying off around 1,000 employees from across verticals.

According to reports citing employee records, verticals like mobility, hyperlocal, fintech, and Ola’s used car operations have been included in the layoff process.

However, according to sources close to the company, these layoffs may impact less than 500 employees instead of 1,000, and “are a result of restructuring in the Cars and Dash businesses”.

The company currently has nearly 1,100 employees in its core ride-hailing business.

Senior executives at the SoftBank-backed company were recently tasked with identifying team members who can be asked to leave based on performance.

Ola is planning to cut costs amid a challenging funding environment and global downturn.

The company aims at “leaner and consolidated teams” to keep its “strong profitability intact”.

The ride-hailing major recently shut down its used-vehicle business Ola Cars, and its quick-commerce business, Ola Dash, as the company shifted its focus on the electric two-wheeler and car verticals.

Ola, which has delayed its IPO plans, has also applied brakes on its global investment plans.

The company aims to invest more in its electric car, battery cell manufacturing and financial services businesses.

Ola Electric, amid several high-profile exits and falling sales, is also facing scrutiny over faulty batteries in its electric two-wheelers, along with other EV players like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, and Boom Motors, by the government.

Alarmed at the unabated EV fire incidents, the Centre has sent show-cause notices to EV manufacturers, warning them why penal action should not be taken against them for delivering faulty electric two-wheelers to the public.
