Harvard factors in race during admissions and Apple, Google, Microsoft and many US companies like it

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Dozens of US companies including Google, Microsoft, and Apple have backed Harvard University and the University of North Carolina’s affirmative action, which allows them to consider the race of applicants as one of the factors for college admissions.

Top US colleges — Harvard University and the University of North Carolina — have been facing lawsuits over their affirmative action, which allows them to consider the race of applicants as one of the factors for undergraduate admissions.

However, more than 60 US companies, including Apple, Microsoft, General Electric, and Starbucks, have backed the move as the Supreme Court, in its next term, is slated to hear separate cases challenging admissions practices.

According to local reports, the firms have asked the apex court to affirm the use of racial preferences in college admissions as it leads to more diversity on campuses, which in turn contributes to commercial innovation and business success.

They submitted a friend-of-the-court brief saying that empirical studies confirm that diverse groups make better decisions thanks to increased creativity, sharing of ideas, and accuracy. “These benefits are not simply intangible; they translate into businesses’ bottom lines,” the note added.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the brief cited reports published by journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Corporate Governance, and the Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting.

Meanwhile, Asian Americans Advancing Justice — AAJC, which represents Asian students supporting Harvard’s case — argued that if universities do not consider race, it would “hinder their ability to achieve educational benefits of diversity and harm communities of colour and undo the progress that has been hard fought and won, and impede progress where it still is needed,” The Guardian reported.

The development comes as a group backed by former stockbroker Edward Blum, Students for Fair Admissions, has filed a lawsuits against Harvard and UNC alleging that their consideration of race violates constitutional equal-protection provisions.

Also Read: How your child can still make it to the dream college despite rising education inflation

The group has alleged that Harvard and the University of North Carolina’s admissions policies provide unfair advantages to Black, Hispanic and Native American applicants over their white and Asian American counterparts.

The universities, however, say they consider applicants individually and race is only one among many factors they consider to admit students.

This is not the first time that the issue has come before the Supreme Court. Affirmative action in admissions has returned repeatedly to court since 1978 when in the case of Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, the court found a compelling government interest in promoting racial diversity and allowed consideration of race so long as it wasn’t through a rigid quota or hard numerical benefit, the WSJ report said.

India’s July unemployment rate lowest in six months: CMIE data

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The unemployment rate has shrunk to 6.8 percent in July, as compared to 7.8 percent in June, data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) on Monday showed. The July jobless rate is the lowest since January when it was 6.5 percent.

India’s overall unemployment rate fell to its lowest in six months in July with a sharp decline in jobless rate in rural areas as agriculture activity picked up during monsoon.

The unemployment rate has shrunk to 6.8 percent in July, as compared to 7.8 percent in June, data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) on Monday showed. The July jobless rate is the lowest since January when it was 6.5 percent. In the year-ago period, the unemployment rate was at 7 percent.

Rural India’s unemployment rate witnessed a sharp decline in July to 6.14 percent, the lowest in 6 months, and much lower than the jobless rate in urban areas which climbed to 8.21 percent. The unemployment rate in rural and urban India was 8.03 percent and 7.30 percent, respectively, last month.

The increase in the urban unemployment rate comes at a time when several startups are laying off employees in massive numbers due to a fund crunch and the tech sector is witnessing high attrition.

TeamLease Services Vice President and Business Head Ajoy Thomas said increased agricultural activity helped reduce the jobless rate in rural India. “There was a drop in unemployment because rural India provided much-needed jobs, owing to increased agricultural activity,” he told CNBCTV18.com.

In the long-term, the jobless rate is projected to trend around 6.50 percent in 2023, he said.

Among states, Haryana has the highest unemployment rate of 26.9 percent, followed by Jammu and Kashmir (20.2 percent), Rajasthan (19.1 percent) and Bihar (18.8 percent). The lowest jobless rates in July were recorded in Chhattisgarh (0.8 percent), Odisha (0.9 percent) and Meghalaya (1.5 percent), showed CMIE data.

The government last week said that available Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data indicates that the unemployment rate is on a declining trend in the country.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli said all-India unemployment on usual status for persons of age 15 years and above in 2020-21 was 4.2 percent against 4.8 percent in 2019-20 and 5.8 percent in 2018.

The urban unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in 2020-21, 6.9 percent in 2019-20 and 7.6 percent in 2018-19, he said, adding that comparative rural unemployment stood at 3.3 percent, 3.9 percent and 5 percent, respectively, according to the PLFS report.

Titagarh Wagons aims to double production in a year and hiring over five

As Indian railway wagon manufacturer Titagarh Wagons completes 25 years in the industry, it plans to scale up production and recruitment over the next few years.

Jagadish Prasad Choudhury, who was once an account assistant at a tea estate in Darjeeling, started the company. Later he became an accountant of a steel casting company and the CEO of this organisation.

He purchased the closed foundry division of state-owned Britanni Engineering in Titagarh, began manufacturing railway castings and has never looked back since then. Choudhury founded Titagarh Wagon on July 3, 1997.

In an exclusive conversation with News18, MD and Vice Chairman of Titagarh, Choudhury stressed the changing business trends and perception and also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make In India’ initiative, which he says has revolutionised opportunities for indigenous industries like Titagarh.

Titagarh Wagons launched a slew of expansion initiatives to celebrate 25 years of its journey in India. West Bengal Chief Minister also inaugurated a stainless coach manufacturing facility at the Uttarpara Plant, which is a brownfield expansion of the group.

Choudhury said the company looked to double recruitment over the next five years. Currently, it has a headcount of 2,000 people in Bengal and plans to attain the 4,500-mark.

Titagarh Wagons is constantly recruiting engineers and plans to send them to Italy every year for training, Choudhury said, adding though this was planned before the pandemic, it could not be executed earlier. “Now, we will work on this plan. We will be making Indian investment abroad and be productive for the nation,” he said.

Choudhury, however, pointed out that people have become restless and want to work in different locations. “You must have heard about the great resignation. People are mobile now. It’s not true that all are going out, but people are also coming back. I don’t buy this brain drain theory. There are opportunities in India and also in Bengal,” he said.

Moreover, following orders received between May 29 and June 22, the company received orders of 6,000 wagons at the Titagarh plant, meaning a combined capacity of 9600. “In the next six months, we want to increase the capacity of the Titagarh unit to 8,400 wagons and a combined capacity of 12,000 wagons. In FY23/FY24, we target to produce 1,000 wagons a month from Titagarh,” Choudhury said.

Speaking about the region in which Titagarh Wagons operates, the MD said Bengal means business now. “We started with Rs 59 lakh, which has increased to Rs 11,000 crore. All our factories are in Bengal,” he said, pointing to a decline in issues related to workers’ unions.

“There is huge government support, and there is one window clearance,” he said. According to Choudhury, while the youth was more agitation oriented earlier, they are more growth-oriented now. “We are comfortable expanding the industry here,” he added.

Commenting on central government policies, Choudhury said, ‘Make In India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ are the biggest reforms that our country has seen in decades. This has opened up huge opportunities for industries like his, and they can now compete with global industry, he said.

Crypto education: A look at some of the top universities that offer cryptocurrency and blockchain programmes

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Here is a look at some of the crypto programmes offered by top colleges across the world:

The cryptocurrency sector has exploded in the last couple of years. It has quickly grown from a speculative industry to one that’s seeing rapid mainstream adoption. This exponential growth rate has created several jobs in the blockchain and digital asset space. However, crypto education is not exactly at par with the rest of the traditional academic space.

This has resulted in a gulf between the number of qualified professionals and the current workforce requirements of the industry. Fortunately, many of the top colleges in the world have recognised the potential of these burgeoning technologies and have started to offer cryptocurrency and blockchain programmes.

Here’s a look at some of the top colleges and the crypto programmes they offer:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the leading tech colleges in the world. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before it began offering programmes on crypto and blockchain. Today, MIT offers more than 10 courses on digital assets and the underlying distributed ledger technology. It also boasts excellent faculty members, such as the current chair of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler.

National University of Singapore (NUS): Another pioneer in crypto education is the National University of Singapore. It currently offers 10 crypto courses on subjects such as distributed ledgers, banking and enterprise applications, payments, and innovation in financial services. The college also conducts regular seminars on blockchain technology each year. The college also ranked first in CoinDesk’s Top Universities for Blockchain (2021) with a perfect score of 100/100, based on parameters such as research output, campus blockchain offerings, employment outcomes, cost, etc.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (ITT-KGP): As one of the premium tech colleges in India, IIT-KGP was quick to add a crypto course to its suite of offerings. The free 12-week programme will cover blockchain consensus, smart contracts, decentralised identity management, blockchain interoperability, and blockchain applications. The programme’s first batch was conducted from January 24 to April 15, 2022.

Cornell University: This Ivy League college offers over a dozen blockchain courses on distributed consensus, blockchain applications, cryptocurrencies, ledgers, etc. It also works with some of the biggest names in the industry for its frequent seminars. For instance, it had Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin participate in its “Crypto Boot Camp”. Cornell also has Emin Gun Sirer, Founder and CEO of Ava Labs, as one of its faculty members.

Harvard University: Harvard has teamed up with Coursera to offer half a dozen online crypto programmes. One of its courses — Breakthrough Innovation with Blockchain Technology — looks at blockchain and AI’s use cases across several industries. Harvard also has a budding crypto community with more than 200 members called “Crypto 101”, where students can develop crypto projects under the guidance of an on-campus incubator.

CoinDesk’s Top Universities for Blockchain (2021) listed and ranked 230 different schools worldwide based on the pedigree of their cryptocurrency courses. Among these schools were renowned institutions such as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, University of Zurich, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, London University College and so on.

There are several institutes in India that also offer such programmes. For instance, IIT Madras started offering blockchain software engineering certification in 2020. The Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad) and IIT Kanpur also offer crypto and blockchain certification programs.
