Air India Express expects full normalcy in operations by May 14: Sources

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Approximately 20 flights have been cancelled for Sunday as the airline grapples with the aftermath of the sudden mass sick leave. However, many previously cancelled flights have now resumed, indicating a positive trajectory in operations.

Air India Express, in its efforts to restore normalcy in operations, anticipates a return to full functionality by Tuesday, according to sources within the airline. Despite challenges posed by the sudden mass sick leave taken by a section of cabin crew members, the gradual restoration of flights is underway.

The Air India Express Employees Union has clarified that there is no delay in the rejoining of duty by cabin crew members. All cabin crew who reported sick have resumed their duties as of May 11. The union attributes the apparent delay in crew reporting to a software glitch in the company’s scheduling software, which falsely indicated crew sickness.

Approximately 20 flights have been cancelled for Sunday as the airline grapples with the aftermath of the sudden mass sick leave. However, many previously cancelled flights have now resumed, indicating a positive trajectory in operations.

Sources within the airline have cited technicalities related to rostering and re-rostering as impediments to immediately assigning duties to returning cabin crew members. The process of restoring full operations is expected to take about one-and-a-half days.

Additionally, the airline will undertake medical check-ups for cabin crew members who have returned to work, further contributing to the time required for normalisation. The recent strike by a section of cabin crew members, which commenced on Tuesday night (May 7) and resulted in over 170 flight cancellations, was called off on Thursday evening. Following this, the airline rescinded termination letters issued to 25 striking cabin crew members.

The cabin crew’s decision to report sick was motivated by alleged mismanagement at the airline, a grievance that they have sought to address through their actions.

Air India Express, which is in the process of merging with AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), employs around 6,000 people.

10 flights diverted from Delhi Airport due to poor weather as dust storms, rains lash parts of NCR

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Earlier on Friday, the weather department had forecast overcast skies with the potential for dust storms and thunderstorms on Friday, coupled with sporadic light rain and hailstorms.

Dust storms, fierce winds and rains battered the national capital region uprooting trees and causing massive traffic jams on Friday (May 10). The poor weather conditions led to 10 flights being diverted from Delhi to nearby airports, CNBC-TV18 reported. Two Air India flights were redirected to Jaipur, an official told PTI.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cautionary advisory urging residents to remain indoors and curtail non-essential travel. “Residents are advised to stay indoors, secure their residences, and refrain from unnecessary journeys,” emphasized the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its advisory.

The IMD recommended seeking safe havens and cautioned against seeking shelter under trees. Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic alert for Dharam Marg and Janakpuri following the blockage of a road at B2 Janakpuri due to a large fallen tree.

Through a notice on X platform, the traffic police urged commuters to steer clear of the affected area. Instances of tree collapses were reported from various parts of the city due to the intense winds prevailing.

Earlier forecasts from the weather department had indicated overcast skies with the potential for dust storms and thunderstorms on Friday, coupled with sporadic light rain and hailstorms. Squally winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph were also anticipated for Friday night.

“Given the influence of the new active western disturbance, the capital is likely to experience drizzles late Friday night,” noted Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist and head of the Regional Meteorological Centre. Temperatures touched 39 degrees Celsius in New Delhi on Friday, with relative humidity ranging between 47 and 64% throughout the day, as per IMD data.

Heavy rain at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2 diverts 17 flights

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The India Meteorological Department reported that the airport recorded 72.4mm of rainfall, while Bengaluru City received 14mm, until 8:30 am on May 10. T2, known as a terminal in a garden, commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023.

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 (T2) was struck by a heavy downpour on the evening of May 9, 2024, causing water leakage in parts of the terminal and leading to the diversion of 17 flights to Chennai.

The rainfall, which occurred between 21:35 hrs. and 22:29 hrs, resulted in rainwater dripping from the roof near the baggage claim area of T2. A spokesperson for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) stated, “Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds led to the diversion of flights.”

The diverted flights included four each from IndiGo and Air India Express, two from Air India and others from Vistara, Akasa Air and Star Air. The three international flights diverted were Singapore Airlines (SQ 510), Etihad (EY 238) from Abu Dhabi and KLM flight (KL-879) from Amsterdam.

“Our teams promptly responded to the situation to mitigate the impact and restore normal operations. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers,” the spokesperson added.

The India Meteorological Department reported that the airport recorded 72.4mm of rainfall, while Bengaluru City received 14mm, until 8:30 am on May 10. Many passengers faced severe inconvenience due to waterlogged roads.

Traffic police officials reported waterlogging from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal flyover as well as Hunasamaranahalli. An advisory issued by Bengaluru traffic police on May 9 warned commuters to expect a 30 to 40-minute delay to the airport due to heavy congestion.

T2, known as a terminal in a garden, was built for 5,000 crore and inaugurated by PM Modi on November 11, 2022. It commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023, and international flight operations began on September 12.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru, which has been reeling under an acute water crisis since March this year, saw much-needed respite in the form of rains bringing the city to a halt with flooding in low-lying areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains for the next seven days in Bengaluru, offering a temporary reprieve from the relentless water crisis gripping the city. However, the aftermath of the torrential rainfall saw numerous areas of the city face waterlogging, exacerbating traffic congestion and disrupting the daily lives of residents.

The powerful gusts felled dozens of trees, further complicating cleanup efforts. The Bangalore traffic police issued guidelines to commuters to navigate the waterlogged streets aiming to alleviate traffic woes in the city.

A senior official told CNBC-TV18 that the airline could be staring at a revenue loss of Rs 30 crore owing to the large-scale flight cancellations and compensation to passengers.

The official added that Air India Express operates about 230 flights every day, adding that the flights cancelled were a mix of domestic & international with an 85% load factor.

The strike was initiated by many cabin crew members who reported sick in protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline and perceived inequality in staff treatment.

After the strike was called off, the airline pledged to restore the flight schedule swiftly and apologised to passengers affected by the disruptions.

In response to the disruptions, Air India will operate services on 20 of Air India Express’s routes to minimise inconvenience to passengers. Passengers have been advised to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport.

On Wednesday, May 9, the airline reached an agreement with its agitating cabin crew following conciliation talks. The company has reinstated the 25 cabin crew members who were terminated for reporting sick.

Air India is expanding its operations in Europe to meet growing demand. Starting from June 22, 2024, Air India will operate daily non-stop flights from Delhi to Amsterdam Schiphol and Delhi to Milan Malpensa.

This marks an increase in frequency on these routes from 4 times weekly and 5 times weekly, respectively. Additionally, Air India will add another flight on the Delhi-Copenhagen route, bringing the frequency to 5 times weekly.

These additional flights complement Air India’s existing services, including daily non-stop flights to Zurich starting June 16, 2024, as well as daily services to Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).

Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, said: “The increased frequency to Europe demonstrates the growing demand for travel between India and Europe, and we are committed to providing our customers with greater choice and convenience.”

Wilson said these flights will strengthen trade and tourism ties and also offer seamless connectivity to travellers from Europe to other countries in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia (and vice versa) via the Delhi hub.

With the increased frequency to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Milan, Air India will now serve mainland Europe with 80 flights a week to and from seven points.

The airline on Wednesday cancelled more than 20 flights to and from the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane, and the New Zealand city of Auckland for the rest of the week. The airline said it was the result of “extended maintenance requirements” on their aircraft.

Air Vanuatu filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday a day after the South Pacific state-owned carrier cancelled all international flights, stranding thousands of travelers.

The airline on Wednesday cancelled more than 20 flights to and from the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane, and the New Zealand city of Auckland for the rest of the week. The airline said it was the result of “extended maintenance requirements” on their aircraft.

Ernst & Young Australia’s Morgan Kelly, Justin Walsh and Andrew Hanson were appointed liquidators in an equivalent of a U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the firm said in a statement. The liquidators said safety and maintenance checks would be made before normal operations resumed.

Kelly said the airline’s existing management team would remain in place.

“Air Vanuatu is critical to the people of the Republic of Vanuatu and a strategically important business to the nation,” Kelly said. “Our team is working closely with management to ensure continuity of service to customers and to ensure services continue as seamlessly as possible.”

“The outlook for the airline is positive, despite pressures on the broader industry, and we will be focused on securing the future of this strategically vital national carrier,” he added.

Affected travellers would be informed of this disruption and rebooked on flights as soon as operations resumed, the statement said.

Air Vanuatu operates four planes, including one Boeing 737 and three turboprop planes.

“This is an evolving situation and we will continue to post updates,” the office said in a statement.

The office’s chief executive Adela Issachar said the administrator was in discussions with Virgin Australia and Fiji Airways, airlines that currently service Vanuatu, about flying stranded passengers.

“The updated schedule should be advised soon so we’re all looking forward for that,” Issachar told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Kelly said Air Vanuatu had been impacted by labour shortages, rising operating costs, elevated interest rates and tropical cyclones on tourist numbers in recent years.

“We’ll be looking at all options. And the Vanuatu government has indicated that they would prefer to resume operations as quickly as possible. Our role as voluntary liquidators will be to look at to assess all options to achieve that and make that sustainable,” Kelly told reporters.

“So that might involve some kind of sale process, it may involve some kind of partnership arrangement with another airline,” Kelly added.

Australian tourist Sally Witchalls said she and four friends had been checking out of their Port Vila hotel on Wednesday morning when they were told at reception that their Air Vanuatu flight would not fly that day.

She has since discovered that her travel insurance did not cover an airline going into voluntary administration, as Air Vanuatu had done, or bankrupt.

“We’re now on our own working out how we pay for the accommodation from here on out while we wait to see how the situation with Air Vanuatu unfolds,” Witchalls told ABC.

The difficult tale of airline mergers — here’s the challenges of Indian civil aviation and Air India’s too

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The merger or acquisition looks very good on paper. But what the numbers often miss is the institutional capability and the integration of cultures. And as far as airlines go, this constitutes the greatest challenge. Civil aviation expert and Managing Partner of the aviation services firm AT-TV, Satyendra Pandey here explains the woes of India’s civil aviation sector, especially in the context of the ongoing service and staff issues at Air India group.

Mergers and acquisitions are a key element of free markets. The represent an opportunity for firms to make strategic choices and in many cases amplify growth prospects for companies, help integrate supply chains or offer a chance at changing the industry dynamics.

In other cases, mergers and acquisitions may help with talent acquisition, technology acquisition or even survival of the firm itself. In all cases, the goal is greater economic benefit as measured by returns on capital. Yet, all mergers and acquisitions are not value accretive. Indeed, in many cases they can be extremely messy and often lead to eroded values and permanent loss of capital. And when it comes to airlines, majority of mergers and acquisitions fall in the latter category.

A not so straightforward equation

Airlines are a fairly unique business. With high capital costs, constant regulatory mechanisms and labour-intensive processes, the margins are thin, returns on capital tepid and profitability (if at all) is measured at the lower end of the spectrum. After years of losses, for some airlines a merger or acquisition is the only hope for survival.

By the numbers, a merger or acquisition is a fairly straightforward equation. Take two companies with two revenue streams and two cost bases. Combining the companies means you add the revenue streams and the cost bases where you initially add the costs but then subtract the synergies. At the end of it you have a linear growth of revenues for the two firms but not a linear growth of costs. And therein lies the initial value. As the firm grows, this value accretion can become stronger based on a greater market share, better purchasing power and profitability prospects.

Overall, the merger or acquisition looks very good on paper. But what the numbers often miss is the institutional capability and the integration of cultures. And as far as airlines go, this constitutes the greatest challenge. And managing the culture and integrating cultures is a task that humbles even the most seasoned of managers.

Over the years, airlines have evolved into two distinct classifications and consequently cultures. Namely, the full-service carrier and the low-cost carrier. The difference in names highlights a difference in philosophy and in culture. A full-service airline, aims at providing a full-suite of services for the traveller but at a higher price point. On the other hand, a low-cost carrier aims at only providing the basics that is getting a passenger from an origin to a destination in the lowest cost possible.

But combining these two classifications is inherently in conflict as it combines two different cultures — two different ways of thinking; two different ways of being; and two different ways of operating. The numbers simply cannot capture this. And this is where most airlines face the most turbulence.

Emotion leads, logic may or may not follow

With regards to cultural integration of airlines, emotions lead the way. This is because of the intense nature of airlines. Consider a check-in agent who interacts with 1 passenger every 3 to 5 minutes. In a 10 hour shift even adjusting for breaks, this person would have had close to 100 interactions. Over a year, adjusting for time off, these would amount to well in excess of 22,000 plus interactions. That is with one cohort alone.

Add to those,  interactions with security staff, colleagues, competitors and regulators and each airline employee is consistently reinforcing the airlines identity as a part of his/her own. This is repeated for various functions in airlines — day after day. Over time this becomes inseparable with the employee’s own identity. Any violation of this identity is an extremely emotional event.

Airlines also, for some mysterious reason, evoke a sense of pride. As summed up by Leonardo Da Vinci in his famous quote, “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you will always long to return” this often holds true for airline roles as well.

Ask most airline employees about their challenges and a lengthy list will pour out; ask how long they have worked in the industry and it is usually measured in decades. Within airlines, this phenomena is often referred to as “golden handcuffs” and it is indeed a reality that most folks once they join the industry simply do not leave.

Thus as merger and acquisitions decisions are taken, despite best intensions and well-reasoned and understandable arguments including the survival of the airline itself — these are not received in the same manner. Emotion simply takes over. This is often witnessed in ways that are visible and other ways that are not-so-visible. And it is a pattern that has been repeated the world over with mergers and acquisitions of airlines —  big and small, strong and weak, and successful and unsuccessful.

Contrarian approaches are often required; the end goal must be clear

For airlines, the ability to control costs is critical. Because in most markets and for most passengers price is a key determinant. And the lack of a competitive cost base means either the airline loses out on margin or on profitability. A merger or acquisition helps with economies of scale and economies of scope. By combining systems, procurement and passenger flows, a reduction in the cost base is almost always a certainty.

But the caveat is that after getting to a competitive cost base, revenues must consistently cover those costs. And given the nature of travel demand which is cyclical and inconsistent, each flight contributes to success or the lack thereof. And the flights must operate on a consistent basis. In industry terms “schedule integrity” must be maintained. Because, most airlines make positive net contributions during peak seasons and in lean seasons they dent a significant portion of that very contribution. So every dollar counts.

For any merger and acquisition the end goal must be clear. And it must be ingrained. The playbook for doing that is different depending on the nature of the airline(s). And often contrarian indicators are key. Much can be gleamed by noticing who is not joining leadership ranks rather than who is; what is not being addressed rather than what is; and where expectations are not being recalibrated rather than where they are. There is no easy solution. There is no framework that can be force-fit. And ironically, in an industry driven by checklists, there is no checklist to achieve this.

The philosopher Karl Popper famously wrote in his seminal paper that clouds are intended to represent physical systems which, like gases, are highly irregular, disorderly, and more or less unpredictable…, and on the other extreme [we have] … a precision clock, intended to represent physical systems which are regular, orderly, and highly predictable in their behaviour. Combining both is messy at the very least and borders on the impossible. But most airline mergers try to do just that.

Air India Express reinstates 25 sacked staff after talks; cabin crew to resume work immediately

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The conciliation talks were facilitated by the Chief Labour Commissioner, held at the Office of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) in New Delhi. Now, all cabin crew members who had reported sick would need to provide a fitness certificate and return to duty immediately.

Air India Express on Wednesday, May 9, reached an agreement with its agitating cabin crew following conciliation talks. The company has reinstated the 25 cabin crew members who were terminated for reporting sick. Also,  cabin crew has rejoined work after reporting sick this week, ending disruptions in services for the airline that has cancelled almost 170 flights in two days.

The conciliation talks were facilitated by the Chief Labour Commissioner. Both the parties were summoned to resolve the dispute arising from the mass reporting of sick leave by cabin crew members, which had severely disrupted flight operations.

“We are pleased with the progress we made at the conciliation meeting and welcome our cabin crew colleagues back at work. This will help us swiftly restore our flight schedule and fulfil our commitments to our guests,” said an Air India Express spokesperson.

During the talks, it was agreed that all cabin crew members who had reported sick would need to provide a fitness certificate and return to duty immediately. Additionally, following an appeal by the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Air India Express management consented to reinstate the 25 terminated cabin crew members with immediate effect.

Further, it informed that “the management will review the cases of these cabin crew as per service regulations.” Representatives from the management assured that all issues raised by the cabin crew, both before and during the conciliation proceedings, would be thoroughly addressed and resolved.

As a result of these agreements, the conciliation proceedings have been adjourned and are scheduled to reconvene on May 28, 2024, at 3.00 pm.

The protesting cabin crew had alleged inequality and mistreatment. They accused the management of sidelining senior employees and claimed that there was a disparity in their salaries compared to those of cabin crew from Air Asia India. Additionally, they alleged that Air Asia India employees were given permanent payroll while Air India Express staff were terminated without explanation.

“We sincerely apologise to those inconvenienced by these unintended disruptions. It is not in keeping with our usual service standards, and we will review it internally to ensure accountability.”

“As we gradually bring our operations back to normalcy, we urge our guests booked to fly with us to check their flight status before heading to the airport. If their flight is cancelled, or delayed beyond 3 hours, they may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees on Tia on WhatsApp (+91 6360012345) or on airindiaexpress.com,” the Air India Express spokesperson informed.

Air India Express sacks 25 crew members, sends ultimatum to others to join work by 4 pm or face a similar fate

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Air India Express has cancelled at least 60 flights for Thursday due to the non-availability of cabin crew. There are around 1,400 cabin crew, including about 500 at the senior level, at the airline.

Air India Express has issued termination letter to 25 cabin crew members, who allegedly instigated the crew members to report sick, resulting in the cancellation of 90 flights on Wednesday, May 9.

The Tata Group-owned airline has given an ultimatum to the remaining cabin crew members reporting sick to join back duty by 4 pm on Thursday or face termination, sources told CNBC-TV18.

Meanwhile, the Chief Labour Commissioner has summoned a meeting with the Air India Express union and CEO today following the termination of crew members on May 8 night.

CEO Aloke Singh is likely to hold a townhall with cabin crew members today.

Air India Express has cancelled 85 flights for Thursday due to the non-availability of cabin crew. The airline is operating 283 flights today. Also, Air India is running 20 flights on its route.

“Air India Express is making every possible effort to minimise the inconvenience caused to our guests by this unexpected situation. However, 85 of our flights stand cancelled and we urge our guests booked to fly with us to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport. If their flight is cancelled, or delayed beyond 3 hours, they may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees on Tia on WhatsApp (+91 6360012345) or on http://airindiaexpress.com,” said Air India Express spokesperson.

There are around 1,400 cabin crew, including about 500 at the senior level, at the airline. Over 200 cabin crew started reporting sick from Tuesday night to protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline that caused the cancellation of over 90 flights.

Discontent has been brewing among a section of the cabin crew at the low-cost carrier for some time now, especially after the start of the process to merge AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India, with itself. In late April, a union representing a section of the Air India Express cabin crew alleged that the airline is being mismanaged and there is a lack of equality in the staff treatment.

The latest development at Air India Express comes a month after Tata Group full-service carrier Vistara witnessed pilot woes, forcing it to temporarily cut down capacity by 10%, or 25-30 flights daily. As part of consolidating its airline business, Tata Group is merging Air India Express and AIX Connect, as well as Vistara with Air India.

Last month, the Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU), a registered union, which claims to represent around 300 cabin crew members, mostly seniors, had also alleged that mismanagement of the affairs has affected the morale of the employees.
