Pakistan’s first lunar orbiter, launched as part of China’s moon mission, sends back images

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The images were unveiled at a ceremony organised at the China National Space Agency (CNSA) to mark the successful mission, said Maria Tariq, spokesperson of Pakistan’s national space agency Suparco.

Pakistan’s maiden lunar orbiter sent the first images of the sun and the moon, days after it was launched as part of China’s moon mission, it was announced on Friday.

Pakistan’s mini satellite ‘iCube-Qamar’ was launched as part of China’s Chang’e-6 lunar mission on May 3 from the Hainan province.

The images were unveiled at a ceremony organised at the China National Space Agency (CNSA) to mark the successful mission, Maria Tariq, spokesperson of Pakistan’s national space agency Suparco, told Dawn.com.

She said that pictures were officially handed over to Pakistan’s ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, at the data handover ceremony in Beijing.

At 16:14 (1:14 pm Pakistan time) on May 8, the Pakistani CubeSat, one of the international payloads carried by the Chang’e-6 mission, “separated from the orbiter near the far moon point of the 12-hour large elliptical orbit around the moon, and then successfully captured the first image.

Pakistan’s CubeSat project achieved the set goal of ‘successfully separating and obtaining telemetry’ and achieved complete success,” the CNSA announcement said.

The first image showed the sun as a bright spotlight; the second was that of a sparkling half moon while the third image showed the moon on the left and the sun on the right, according to images shared by CNSA online.

The module was designed by Islamabad’s Institute of Space Technology (IST) in collaboration with China’s Shanghai University (SJTU) and Suparco. It carries two optical cameras to capture the lunar surface.

The cube satellite or cubesat is a miniature satellite typically characterised by its small size and standardised cubic design. They help to collect valuable data for scientific advancement and innovation.

Pakistan got the opportunity to launch the lunar orbiter after it was offered by the CNSA through the Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO) to become part of the Chang’e-6 mission.

Meanwhile, the news of the first lunar orbit sending back images has infused a sense of pride in the country beset with daunting economic and security challenges. The social media was full of posts with almost all of them sharing images with messages full of pride.

Honda’s annual profit jumps 70%, plans electrification push despite forecasted dip

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Japanese automakers have scored great success with traditional fuel-powered vehicles and hybrids, which have both a gas engine and electric motor. But they have lagged rivals such as BYD of China and Tesla of the US in the drive toward battery electric vehicles.

Honda’s profit for the fiscal year through March jumped 70% as vehicle sales grew and a weak yen buoyed overseas earnings, the Japanese automaker reported Friday.

Annual profit at Tokyo-based Honda Motor Co. totaled 1.1 trillion yen ($7 billion) as sales surged nearly 21% to 20.4 billion yen ($131 million).

Weaker sales in China were offset by strong demand in the US market.

Honda sold more than 2.8 million vehicles globally, up from 2.3 million a year earlier, with sales growing in Japan, the US and Europe.

The maker of the Accord sedan and CR Electric Proto motorcycles was less optimistic about this fiscal year, forecasting that its profit will decline nearly 10% to 1 trillion yen ($6.4 billion), as research and development spending was expected to increase to nearly 1.2 trillion yen ($7.7 billion) from 964 billion yen.

All the Japanese automakers are investing in R&D, given the global shift to electric vehicles, using the profit gains they have racked up lately thanks to the blessings of a weak yen to invest in the future.

The US dollar has been trading at about 155 Japanese yen, up from 130-yen levels a year ago.

Honda’s Japanese rivals Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co., which both reported earnings earlier, racked up robust increases in profit, but also stressed they were investing in research.

Honda Chief Executive Toshihiro Mibe told reporters there was “anxiety due to uncertainty about electrification” at the company, despite its latest robust profits.

Japanese automakers have scored great success with traditional fuel-powered vehicles and hybrids, which have both a gas engine and electric motor.

But they have lagged rivals such as BYD of China and Tesla of the US in the drive toward battery electric vehicles.

Honda said it would make the current fiscal year a major electrification year to ensure future growth. A strategy will be outlined next week, it said.

Heavy rain at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2 diverts 17 flights

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The India Meteorological Department reported that the airport recorded 72.4mm of rainfall, while Bengaluru City received 14mm, until 8:30 am on May 10. T2, known as a terminal in a garden, commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023.

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 (T2) was struck by a heavy downpour on the evening of May 9, 2024, causing water leakage in parts of the terminal and leading to the diversion of 17 flights to Chennai.

The rainfall, which occurred between 21:35 hrs. and 22:29 hrs, resulted in rainwater dripping from the roof near the baggage claim area of T2. A spokesperson for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) stated, “Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds led to the diversion of flights.”

The diverted flights included four each from IndiGo and Air India Express, two from Air India and others from Vistara, Akasa Air and Star Air. The three international flights diverted were Singapore Airlines (SQ 510), Etihad (EY 238) from Abu Dhabi and KLM flight (KL-879) from Amsterdam.

“Our teams promptly responded to the situation to mitigate the impact and restore normal operations. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers,” the spokesperson added.

The India Meteorological Department reported that the airport recorded 72.4mm of rainfall, while Bengaluru City received 14mm, until 8:30 am on May 10. Many passengers faced severe inconvenience due to waterlogged roads.

Traffic police officials reported waterlogging from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal flyover as well as Hunasamaranahalli. An advisory issued by Bengaluru traffic police on May 9 warned commuters to expect a 30 to 40-minute delay to the airport due to heavy congestion.

T2, known as a terminal in a garden, was built for 5,000 crore and inaugurated by PM Modi on November 11, 2022. It commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023, and international flight operations began on September 12.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru, which has been reeling under an acute water crisis since March this year, saw much-needed respite in the form of rains bringing the city to a halt with flooding in low-lying areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains for the next seven days in Bengaluru, offering a temporary reprieve from the relentless water crisis gripping the city. However, the aftermath of the torrential rainfall saw numerous areas of the city face waterlogging, exacerbating traffic congestion and disrupting the daily lives of residents.

The powerful gusts felled dozens of trees, further complicating cleanup efforts. The Bangalore traffic police issued guidelines to commuters to navigate the waterlogged streets aiming to alleviate traffic woes in the city.

Mahamat Deby Itno wins Chad’s presidential election amid controversy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Chad held its long delayed presidential election following three years of military rule, a vote that analysts widely expected the incumbent to win. Deby Itno, also known as Mahamat Idriss Deby, seized power after his father, who spent three decades in power, was killed fighting rebels in 2021.

Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Deby Itno, was declared the winner of this week’s presidential election, according to provisional results released Thursday. The results were contested by his main rival, Prime Minister Succès Masra.

The national agency that manages Chad’s election released results of Monday’s vote weeks earlier than planned. The figures showed Deby Itno won with just over 61% of the vote, with the runner-up Masra falling far behind with over 18.5% of the vote. Gunfire erupted in the capital following the announcement, though it was unclear if it was celebratory.

Preliminary results were initially expected on May 21.

Chad held its long delayed presidential election following three years of military rule, a vote that analysts widely expected the incumbent to win. Deby Itno, also known as Mahamat Idriss Deby, seized power after his father, who spent three decades in power, was killed fighting rebels in 2021.

The oil-exporting country of nearly 18 million people hasn’t had a free-and-fair transfer of power since it became independent in 1960 after decades of French colonial rule.

Hours ahead of Thursday’s announcement, Masra published a speech on Facebook accusing the authorities of planning to manipulate the outcome.

During the 11-minute speech, Masra appeared in a blue suit at a podium with the national flag in the background and claimed victory, saying the incumbent was planning to reverse the outcome of the vote. He called on Chad’s military, police and other security forces to stop following Deby Itno’s orders.

“These orders will lead you to side with the wrong side of Chad’s history, these orders will lead you to fight your brothers and sisters, these orders will lead you to commit the irreparable and unforgivable,” he said in the speech. “Refuse to obey these unjust orders!”

There was no immediate response from the president’s office.

After the results were announced Thursday, military and civilian supporters took to the streets on foot and in cars and motorcycles, honking horns and waving flags.

“We heard there was a (high) turnout, which shows that people are really aware and that they were mature enough to participate in (the vote),” said Adoum Mohamed, a resident in the capital.

Masra, president of The Transformers opposition party, fled Chad in October 2022. The country’s military government at the time suspended his party and six others in a clampdown on protests against Deby Itno’s decision to extend his time in power by two more years. More than 60 people were killed in the protests, which the government condemned as “an attempted coup.”

An agreement between the country’s minister of reconciliation and Masra’s political party late last year allowed the exiled politician and other opposition figures to return to Chad. He was later appointed prime minister.

Chad is seen by the US and France as one of the last remaining stable allies in the vast Sahel region following military coups in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in recent years. The ruling juntas in all three nations have expelled French forces and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance instead.

Summary

The airline usually operates about 230 flights daily, but disruptions have been ongoing since May 7, when around 250 cabin crew reported sick. The airline has been cancelling around 100 flights daily, resulting in an estimated revenue loss of approximately Rs 30 crore.

Air India Express, owned by the Tata Group, cancelled 85 flights on Thursday due to a shortage of cabin crew, affecting around 23% of its total daily capacity.

A senior official told CNBC-TV18 that the airline could be staring at a revenue loss of Rs 30 crore owing to the large-scale flight cancellations and compensation to passengers.

The official added that Air India Express operates about 230 flights every day, adding that the flights cancelled were a mix of domestic & international with an 85% load factor.

About 250 cabin crew had reported sick of which, around 60 have resumed duty and the rest are rejoining gradually as they produce fitness certificates, he added.

The strike was initiated by many cabin crew members who reported sick in protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline and perceived inequality in staff treatment.

After the strike was called off, the airline pledged to restore the flight schedule swiftly and apologised to passengers affected by the disruptions.

In response to the disruptions, Air India will operate services on 20 of Air India Express’s routes to minimise inconvenience to passengers. Passengers have been advised to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport.

If their flight is cancelled or delayed beyond three hours, they may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees.

In a significant move, Air India also issued termination letters to around 25 cabin crew members who reported sick in protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline.

On Wednesday, May 9, the airline reached an agreement with its agitating cabin crew following conciliation talks. The company has reinstated the 25 cabin crew members who were terminated for reporting sick.

Air India Express, which is in the process of merging with AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), employs around 6,000 people.

While not directly mentioning the termination letters, the airline stated that it is taking appropriate steps against certain individuals whose actions have caused grave inconvenience to thousands of passengers.

High levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals found in vehicle cabin air, study finds

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The study, conducted by a team of scientists, focused on organophosphate esters (OPEs), commonly used as flame retardants in vehicle foam. These chemicals, including one called TCIPP, were found in 99% of the vehicles tested.

The air inside our cars might not be as clean as we think, according to an alarming new study by a Washington-based science journal. In a study published in Environmental Science & Technology, researchers found high levels of flame retardant chemicals in the cabin air of personal vehicles, raising concerns about potential health risks.

The study, conducted by a team of scientists, focused on organophosphate esters (OPEs), commonly used as flame retardants in vehicle foam. These chemicals, including one called TCIPP, were found in 99% of the vehicles tested.

“The frequent detection of TCIPP in vehicles is particularly concerning given that a 2023 United States National Toxicology Report found evidence of carcinogenic activity in male and female rats and mice exposed to TCIPP,” according to the study.

One of the key findings of the study titled “Flame Retardant Exposure in Vehicles Is Influenced by Use in Seat Foam and Temperature” was the widespread presence of TCIPP, which has been linked to cancer in animal studies. This raises worries about the possible health effects of breathing in these chemicals while driving or riding in a car.

US-based researchers also discovered that the release of flame retardants from vehicle foam is influenced by temperature. This means that when the weather is hot, more of these chemicals could be released into the air inside the car. “Our results suggest that personal vehicles are an important microenvironment to consider for understanding human exposure to FRs,” the study says.

The study suggests that people who spend a lot of time in their cars, like commuters or those who drive for work, could be at higher risk of exposure to these chemicals. Children, who breathe more air per kilogram of body weight than adults, may be especially vulnerable. The findings also indicate that people living in warmer climates might face greater exposure to flame retardants, as higher temperatures can lead to increased release of these chemicals from vehicle foam.

The study has raised questions about the safety regulations that govern the use of flame retardants in vehicle interiors. Currently, regulations like FMVSS 302 drive the use of these chemicals, but the study suggests that a reevaluation of these regulations may be necessary. Experts say that reducing the amount of flame retardants added to vehicle interiors could help to lower exposure levels.

This could involve exploring alternative fire safety measures that are less harmful to human health. “Given that FMVSS 302 continues to drive the use of FRs in vehicles, more information is needed to understand the true risks and benefits of their use,” the study says.

Tesla under scrutiny: US prosecutors probe potential securities, wire fraud

US prosecutors are examining whether Tesla committed securities or wire fraud by misleading investors and consumers about its electric vehicles’ self-driving capabilities, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems assist with steering, braking and lane changes – but are not fully autonomous. While Tesla has warned drivers to stay ready to take over driving, the Justice Department is examining other statements by Tesla and Chief Executive Elon Musk suggesting its cars can drive themselves.

US regulators have separately investigated hundreds of crashes, including fatal ones, that have occurred in Teslas with Autopilot engaged, resulting in a mass recall by the automaker.

Reuters exclusively reported the US criminal investigation into Tesla in October 2022, and is now the first to report the specific criminal liability federal prosecutors are examining.

Investigators are exploring whether Tesla committed wire fraud, which involves deception in interstate communications, by misleading consumers about its driver-assistance systems, the sources said. They are also examining whether Tesla committed securities fraud by deceiving investors, two of the sources said.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating Tesla’s representations about driver-assistance systems to investors, one of the people said. The SEC declined to comment.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Last October, it disclosed in a filing that the Justice Department had asked the company for information about Autopilot and Full Self-Driving.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

The probe, which is not evidence of wrongdoing, could result in criminal charges, civil sanctions, or no action. Prosecutors are far from deciding how to proceed, one of the sources said, in part because they are sifting through voluminous documents Tesla provided in response to subpoenas.

Reuters could not determine the specific statements prosecutors are reviewing as potentially illegal. Musk has aggressively touted the prowess of Tesla’s driver-assistance technology for nearly a decade.

Tesla videos demonstrating the technology that remain archived on its website say: “The person in the driver’s seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself.”

A Tesla engineer testified in 2022 in a lawsuit over a fatal crash involving Autopilot that one of the videos, posted in October 2016, intended to show the technology’s potential and did not accurately portray its capabilities at the time. Musk nevertheless posted the video on social media, writing: “Tesla drives itself (no human input at all) thru urban streets to highway streets, then finds a parking spot.”

In a conference call with reporters in 2016, Musk described Autopilot as “probably better” than a human driver. During an October 2022 call, Musk addressed a forthcoming FSD upgrade he said would allow customers to travel “to your work, your friend’s house, to the grocery store without you touching the wheel.”

Musk is increasingly focused on self-driving technology as Tesla’s car sales and profit slump. Tesla recently slashed costs through mass layoffs and shelved plans for a long-awaited $25,000 model that had been expected to drive sales growth.

“Going balls to the wall for autonomy is a blindingly obvious move,” the billionaire executive posted on his social-media platform X in mid-April. Tesla shares, down more than 29% so far this year, surged in late April when Musk visited China and made progress toward approvals to sell FSD there.

Musk has repeatedly promised self-driving Teslas for about a decade. “Mere failure to realize a long-term, aspirational goal is not fraud,” Tesla lawyers said in a 2022 court filing.

LEGAL CHALLENGES

Prosecutors scrutinizing Tesla’s autonomous-car claims are proceeding with caution, recognizing the legal hurdles they face, the people familiar with the inquiry said.

They will need to demonstrate that Tesla’s claims crossed a line from legal salesmanship to material and knowingly false statements that unlawfully harmed consumers or investors, three legal experts uninvolved in the probe told Reuters.

US courts previously have ruled that “puffery” or “corporate optimism” regarding product claims do not amount to fraud. In 2008, a federal appeals court ruled that statements of corporate optimism alone do not demonstrate that a company official intentionally misled investors.

Justice Department officials will likely seek internal Tesla communications as evidence that Musk or others knew they were making false statements, said Daniel Richman, a Columbia Law School professor and former federal prosecutor. That is a challenge, Richman said, but the safety risk involved in overselling self-driving systems also “speaks to the seriousness with which prosecutors, a judge and jury would take the statements.”

FATAL CRASHES

Tesla’s claims about Autopilot and FSD have also drawn scrutiny in regulatory investigations and lawsuits.

Safety regulators and courts have raised concerns in recent months that corporate messaging about the technology – including the brand names Autopilot and Full Self-Driving – have imbued customers with a false sense of security.

In April, the Washington State Patrol arrested a man on suspicion of vehicular homicide after his Tesla, with Autopilot engaged, struck and killed a motorcyclist while the driver looked at his phone, police records show. In a probable-cause statement, a trooper cited the driver’s “admitted inattention to driving, while on autopilot mode … putting trust in the machine to drive for him.”

In Washington state, a driver remains “responsible for the safe and legal operation of that vehicle” regardless of its technological capabilities, a state patrol spokesperson told Reuters.

The same month, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into whether a Tesla recall of more than 2 million vehicles in December adequately addressed safety issues with Autopilot.

NHTSA declined to comment.

After this story was published, US Senator Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat and longstanding critic of the company’s driver-assistance systems, said in a statement posted on X that he was “glad to see” NHTSA and Justice Department officials “getting tough on Tesla over these dangers.”

The recall followed a long-running probe opened by regulators after cars with Autopilot engaged repeatedly crashed into vehicles at first-responder emergency scenes. Regulators subsequently examined hundreds of crashes where Autopilot was engaged and identified 14 deaths and 54 injuries.

Tesla disputed NHTSA’s findings but agreed to the recall, which employed over-the-air software updates intended to alert inattentive drivers.

The NHTSA investigation found “a critical safety gap between drivers’ expectations” of Tesla’s technology “and the system’s true capabilities,” according to agency records. “This gap led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes.”
