“IPL done for another year, had to get my knee sorted for the upcoming World Cup, Livingstone wrote on his Instagram wall. Thanks once again to the Punjab Kings fans for all their love and support. Disappointing season as a team and personally, but as always, I loved every minute of playing in the IPL”, he added.

Livingstone will not be available for PBKS’ last two matches of the tournament against Rajasthan Royals (May 15) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 19). The injury is not of serious nature but the England management, as per ESPNCricinfo, decided to give him more time to get it treated prior to their home T20I series against Pakistan, beginning on May 22.

After that series, the defending champions will travel to the West Indies for their T20 World Cup engagements, starting on June 4 against Scotland in Bridgetown, Barbados. Livingstone had a lean IPL this season, scoring 111 runs from seven matches and took just three wickets.

Meanwhile, other England players in the IPL who are part of their World Cup squad Moeen Ali (CSK), Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow (PBKS), Jos Buttler (RR), Will Jacks, Reece Topley (RCB) and Phil Salt (KKR) will be home-bound the coming weekend.

Paris Olympic gold more important than breaching 90-m mark, says Neeraj Chopra’s coach

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The 26-year-old has gone on to become the world champion and in 2022 registered a personal best (PB) distance of 89.94 metres at the Stockholm Diamond League. Chopra is asked about the 90-metre mark in practically every media interaction, but defending the Olympic title remains his absolute priority, his coach Klaus Bartonietz said.

India’s Neeraj Chopra is keen to join javelin’s elite 90-metre club but will happily settle for a shorter throw in Paris if it proves enough for him to hold on to his Olympic title, his coach told Reuters.

The mop-haired Chopra catapulted himself into instant stardom three years ago when he threw 87.58 metres in Tokyo to earn independent India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics.

“A medal is more important than a mark. The mark increases almost every year, but the medal stays,” Bartonietz told Reuters from Doha.

“Nobody asks Neeraj how far his throw reached in Tokyo. It was 87.58 and it was enough. If it’s 85 metres and still gets you an Olympic gold, you should be okay with it.”

Bartonietz said it was tough for athletes to produce personal bests at the Olympics because of the pressure that accompanies performing on the biggest stage in sport.

Although the 90 metre-mark has been surpassed 125 times by 24 athletes since the competition javelin was redesigned in 1986, only three of those throws have come in Olympic competition.

“I’d be happy if Neeraj can produce his PB in Paris. It should be enough,” Bartonietz said.

“It’s one thing to throw 90 metres, and a totally different thing to do it in the most important competition in a four-year cycle.”

Chopra, the first Indian to win the Diamond League trophy, has been remarkably consistent in big events, and Bartonietz said he would not be surprised if the thrower from Haryana hits the magical mark in Paris.

“I’d say he’s close to the mark,” the German said.

“For several years, he has been throwing 87-to-high 88s consistently … It will be nice to join the 90-metre club of throwers.”

Chopra began his season with a second place finish at the Diamond League meeting in Doha on Friday, falling two centimetres short of Jakub Vadlejch’s winning throw of 88.38m.

Bartonietz said the idea was to keep Chopra in good shape before the Olympics to ensure he would not “mess it up at the most crucial time”.

One way of doing that was to shield him from any pressure, the coach said.

“If you allow yourself to be under pressure, it may break you.”

Bartonietz, who succeeded javelin great Uwe Hohn as Chopra’s coach, has been impressed by how his charge has matured since the Tokyo Games.

“More than anything else, he knows what not to do to get the best out of himself,” the German said.

P Shyaamnikhil ends 12-year wait, becomes India’s 85th GM

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Summary

P Shayaamnikhil became India’s 85th Grandmaster by completing his third and final GM norm in the just concluded Dubai Police Masters chess tournament, ending a 12yearwait for the player who took to the sport as an eight-year old.

P Shayaamnikhil became India’s 85th Grandmaster by completing his third and final GM norm in the just-concluded Dubai Police Masters chess tournament, ending a 12-year-wait for the player who took to the sport as an eight-year-old.

Shyaamnikhil needed just one win and eight draws to complete the long-overdue GM title which he achieved in the tournament.

The 31-year-old conjured the requisite 2500 ELO rating points, the minimum requirement to be a GM, way back in 2012 with two Grandmaster norms but for the third one, he had to wait for 12 years. “I started playing at the age of eight, my parents taught me but I could not play any tournament for three years. Winning the under-13 State championship opened up opportunities for me as I could play Asian and age group world championship,” recalled Shayaamnikhil.

Hailing from Nagarcoil in Tamil Nadu this was not an easy ride for the player, who was known as one of the finest talents of his time.

“He shifted his base to Chennai to pursue chess despite coming from a modest background and stayed with me,” said his former coach K Visweswaran.

Making his first GM norm in Mumbai Mayors Cup 2011 and the second one some time later during the Indian championship as a 19-year-old, Shayaamnikhil completed the rating requirement in early 2012.

It was Dubai open in 2012 where Nikhil missed a big chance to score his final norm and then a series of missed opportunities led to a long draught in his career.

“It was only in 2017 that I played tournaments in Europe, till then I was trying to play in Vietnam or UAE trying to make the final norm but these places are not so easy as the tournaments are very strong,” he said.

The 2022 Commonwealth champion said that he had come here prepared and missed a norm again in a tournament in France just before the Dubai Police Masters.

“I needed a win in the last round but I drew again and missed the norm again,” he said when asked about how he felt about three missed opportunities.

“I wanted to play Chess as enjoyment, I like Mikhail Tal and Garry Kasparov. I would like to dedicate this to my parents, who have waited a long time for this title, my trainer Visweswaran sir also helped a great deal,” Shyaamnikhil added.

“Now that the title is done, I can play more freely,” he concluded.

Praggnanandhaa beats Carlsen but remains third in Superbet chess

Summary

India’s R. Praggnanandhaa scored yet another victory over world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway to keep himself afloat even as Wei Yi of China stretched his lead to a massive 2.5 points in the Superbet rapid and blitz chess tournament, a part of the Grand Chess Tour.

With nine rounds still to come in the blitz event, Wei Yi has amassed 20.5 points with seven wins on the first day of blitz. Ending the day with 7.5 out of a possible nine, Yi, seems like a man possessed and unless a hurricane hits him, is poised to win the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour.

Carlsen, on 18, is a distant second at this point and the main reason behind that is Praggnanandhaa, who has been beating the world number one often these days in the faster version of the game. Praggnanandhaa, however is far behind the leaders with 14.5 points which makes it literally a two-horse race for the title.

In fourth spot is Arjun Erigaisi on 14 points while Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland is right behind him on 13. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan stands sixth on 12.5, a full point clear of Vincent Keymer of Germany and the eighth spot is now taken by early leader Kirill Shevchenko of Romania with 11 points. Anish Giri of Holland improved a little to be ninth on 10.5 while the blitz remained a cause for worry for world championship challenger D. Gukesh who is languishing at the last spot with 9.5 points in the USD 1,75,000 prize money tournament.

Carlsen notably mentioned that his nervous system had collapsed following his second-round loss against Praggnanandhaa. The world number one ended with six points out of nine, which is by all standards a decent result but following his loss to the Indian he blundered again and went down to Abdusattorov from a winning position. Wei Yi started the day with a loss against Gukesh but recovered in quick time to only concede a draw to Carlsen while winning the rest of the seven games.

For Gukesh, it was a tough day despite a great start against the tournament leader as the Indian could only score 2.5 points in all. With victories over Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh, Arjun ensured he remained in contention for a podium finish.

Losing to Wei Yi and Carlsen, Arjun scored five wins and two draws in his other games and will be optimistic on the final day of the event. Final results rapid: 1. Wei Yi 20.5; 2. Magnus Carlsen 18; 3. R. Praggnanandhaa 14.5; 4. Arjun Erigaisi 14; 5. Duda Jan-Krzysztof 13; 6. Nodirbek Abdusattorov 12.5; 7. Vincent Keymer 11.5; 8. Kirill Shevchenko 11; 9. Anish Giri 10.5; 10. D.Gukesh 9.5.
