Pacer Sreesanth announces retirement from all forms of cricket

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Sreesanth was part of the Indian squads that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 Cricket World Cup held in India. The bowler is infamously remembered for the spat between him and Harbhajan Singh, and his role in the 2013 match-fixing scandal.

Pace bowler S Sreesanth announced on Wednesday that he will be retiring from all forms of cricket. The announcement ends a career that promised a lot but ended up achieving a little. The controversial and at times feisty bowler took to Twitter to make the announcement.

“For the next generation of cricketers..I have chosen to end my first class cricket career. This decision is mine alone, and although I know this will not bring me happiness, it is the right and honorable action to take at this time in my life. I ve cherished every moment ,” Sreesanth tweeted.

The 39-year-old bowler was last seen in action in a Ranji game for his state side, Kerala, against Meghalaya.  The pacer had also registered for the 2022 IPL Mega auction but went unsold.

Sreesanth made his debut for India in a one-day international against Sri Lanka in Nagpur in 2005. In March 2006, he made his Test debut in the same city against England. He was part of the Indian squads that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 Cricket World Cup in India.

Injuries and losses of form meant Sreesanth went in and out of the Indian squad. The mercurial speedster however is infamously remembered for two off-field incidents in the Indian Premier League.

In the first season of the IPL, after a match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians, Sreesanth was slapped by former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh after a heated exchange between the two players.

But the player was dealt a decisive blow when he was among three Rajasthan Royals players arrested in May 2013, along with Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, for the alleged match-fixing scandal. The BCCI banned him for life for his involvement.

Sreesanth tried hard to make a comeback but his age and the rise of a plethora of fast bowlers in India did not help his cause. Sreesanth finishes with 87 Test wickets, 75 ODI scalps and seven T20I wickets.

Change in Cricket Laws: New batsman on strike even if players cross; ban on use of non-striker run-outs and saliva on ball

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

MCC is looking to destigmatise Mankading or running out a batter at the non-striker’s end. Running out a batter at a non-striker’s end came to be informally known as Mankading after former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad. The India cricketer during the second Test in Sydney in 1947, ran out Bill Brown who was at the non-striker’s end. Since then, the process of running out a batter at the non-striker’s end has come to be known as Mankading.

The custodian of the laws of cricket, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), has moved to tweak several laws of the sport. These include a permanent ban on the use of saliva on the cricket ball; in case of a catch being taken, the incoming batsman will take the strike even if both batsmen cross while taking a run; and no more running out non-strikers who are backing up.

The fresh laws will come into effect later this year. There will also be a change in the wide ball rule, giving the bowlers leeway, in case a batsman shuffles across the crease. The MCC will also introduce a law to award penalty runs to the batting side in case a fielder moves unfairly.

MCC is looking to destigmatise ‘Mankading’ or running out a batsman at the non-striker’s end. Running out a non-striker has come to be informally known as Mankading after former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad, who, during the second Test in Sydney in 1947, ran out Bill Brown who was at the non-striker’s end. Although, this way of dismissing a batter is perfectly legal according to the laws of the sport, it was considered against the spirit of cricket.

The MCC will deal with running out the batsman at non-striker’s end under Law 38 of the sport instead of Law 41. Law 38 deals with run-outs while Law 41 looks into Unfair Play. So the move is seen as a way to destigmatise the mode of dismissal.

Further, the Club has also changed the law for the new batter in case of a catch. Previously, if a batter had changed ends before a catch was taken, then the incoming batter was stationed at the non-striker’s end. But now, the new batter shall come at the end where the previous striking batter was.

There will be a law that shall give the batting side five penalty runs if a fielder from the bowling side is spotted making an unfair movement.

The MCC had banned the use of saliva to shine the ball in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now, the Club has decided to make the ban permanent, The use of sweat is still permitted.

These changes in the laws of the sport will come into effect from October 1, 2022.

Australia open to hosting series with India and Pakistan: CA boss

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The geopolitical friction has meant that India and Pakistan no longer face each other beyond the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asia Cup matches.

In a bid to revive the cricket rivalry between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, Cricket Australia has said that it is open to hosting the Asian rivals to play the sport.

Cricket Australia chief,  Nick Hockley has mooted the idea.

“We’d be very open to hosting … matches,”

“There are really big communities of both India and Pakistan living in Australia,”  Hockley said.

The geopolitical friction has meant that India and Pakistan no longer face each other beyond the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asia Cup matches.

They last played a bilateral series when India hosted Pakistan for white-ball matches at the end of 2012. The last Test series played between the two nations was in India back in 2007.

The last time the two teams met in an ICC event was in the last year’s ICC T20 World Cup hosted in the UAE. In the match, Pakistan overpowered India by 10 wickets.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja in January proposed an annual four-nation T20 series involving Pakistan, India, Australia and England to be hosted on a rotational basis by the teams.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Hockley said his board had not discussed the proposal but would be open to hosting Pakistan and India in a tri-series.

“Personally, I really like the tri-series concept. It’s worked well in the past,” he told reporters in Rawalpindi, where Australia and Pakistan drew the first Test in their three-match series.

“It’s a contest that everyone wants to see in world cricket and if we can help support further opportunities we would love to do that.”

Such a series would be unlikely to happen in the short- to medium-term, with the Future Tour Programme, the ICC’s international schedule, mapped out through to 2023.

Pakistan and India are scheduled to play each other at the ICC-sanctioned T20 World Cup in Australia in October. Hockley said the October 23rd  match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was already sold out.

Pietro Fittipaldi to test for delayed Haas in Bahrain

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The team have yet to say who will race alongside German Mick Schumacher when the season starts in Bahrain on March 20. Haas severed ties last week with Mazepin, 23, and title sponsor Uralkali, owned by his billionaire father Dmitry, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Brazilian reserve Pietro Fittipaldi will test for Haas in Bahrain on Thursday following the departure of Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, the U.S.-owned Formula One team said.

Haas severed ties last week with Mazepin, 23, and title sponsor Uralkali, owned by his billionaire father Dmitry, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The team have yet to say who will race alongside German Mick Schumacher when the season starts in Bahrain on March 20.

A spokesman said on Wednesday the cars had arrived late at the Sakhir circuit on Tuesday after the air freight was delayed by a technical issue.

“This delay will impact our programme but we are targeting being out on track for the second session Thursday afternoon with Pietro Fittipaldi driving the VF-22,” he said, giving no further details.

Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time world champion Emerson, stood in for Romain Grosjean at the 2020 Sakhir and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix after the Frenchman’s fiery crash.

Haas finished last in 2021 and were the only team not to score a point after focusing fully on developing their car for this year’s major rule changes.

Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the stadium where Shane Warne picked up his 700th Test wicket, will now also be the venue for Warne’s state memorial. The public farewell will be held on March 30.

Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews on Wednesday confirmed the MCG as the venue for a state memorial service to honour Warne, who died of a suspected heart attack last week in Thailand. He was 52.

The family has announced it will hold a private funeral before the MCG service.

“There’s nowhere in the world more appropriate to farewell Warnie than the ‘G. Victorians will be able to pay tribute to Shane and his contribution our state, and his sport, at a memorial service at the MCG on the evening of March 30th.” Andrews tweeted on Wednesday.

Apart from Warne’s historic 700th Test wicket, the MCG also witnessed Warne’s famous Ashes hat trick in 1994. Warne was born and raised in Melbourne.

Autopsy results confirmed the death was due to natural causes with no signs of foul play.

Following his death on the Thai resort island of Koh Samui on Friday, Warnes’s body was taken by ferry to the mainland city of Surat Thani on Sunday. It was transported to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, on Monday night and was being prepared to fly home to Melbourne.

Warnes’s family issued a statement on Monday describing the night of his death on March 4 as the beginning of a never-ending nightmare.”

Citi to hire 80 commercial bankers in India in 3 years

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

As it winds down its retail bank in the country, American lender Citi on Tuesday said it will be hiring 80 bankers in India over the next three years for its commercial banking vertical. The move is part of a plan to hire 350 bankers in Citi Commercial Bank Asia Pacific over the next three years, as per a statement.

As per reports, the bank, which had taken a decision to exit the retail banking business in most of the markets globally, is in the advanced stage of selling the business in India, with Axis Bank leading the race. The bank had earlier specified that the move to sell the retail business is driven by the global decision, and it will continue to grow in other areas like commercial banking.

The commercial banking business serves mid-sized companies and emerging corporates, with revenues ranging from USD 10 million to USD 3 billion annually. “The Asia Pacific is home to a rapidly growing number of new and emerging corporates, as well as mid-sized companies, that are aggressively pursuing growth,” said Rajat Madhok, head of Citi Commercial Bank for the Asia Pacific.

He added that the lender will be pitching to support such emerging corporates’ cross-border banking needs through its global network, and also offer institutional expertise across cash management, trade, and financing opportunities to them. The lender said in 2021, it witnessed a 70 per cent growth in Capital Markets Origination (CMO) revenue from the commercial banking client base in Asia Pacific.

Other markets in the Asia Pacific region which will see hiring in the next three years include China (80), Hong Kong (100) and Singapore (30 hires), the statement said. “As more emerging and mid-sized companies enter new markets and create global supply chains, there is a real need for sophisticated global banking services.

“This need, coupled with the growth potential of this client segment, is leading us to make investments so that we can serve clients at scale,” Madhok said. The lender is targeting to expand its client base in the high-growth sector by recruiting expert senior bankers and training of existing staff, the statement added.

Supreme Court upset over ONGCs submission on exorbitant’ fees charged by arbitrators

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

“Should we say that an arbitrator has to work without any remuneration? (It is) better we close the arbitration system,” a bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices A S Bopanna and Hima Kohli said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed its displeasure over the submission of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) that arbitrators have been charging “exorbitant and arbitrary” fees and PSUs are in quandary and apprehend that the adjudicators may not be happy if not paid the demanded remuneration. India’s top court said that the way some government firms are functioning is not appreciable.

“Should we say that an arbitrator has to work without any remuneration? (It is) better we close the arbitration system,” a bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices A S Bopanna and Hima Kohli said, when Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for PSU Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), raised the issue of exorbitant fees being charged from the parties including the government firms.

It has been held by the apex court that the arbitrators should be bound by the fees, agreed upon by the parties in their agreement, and the bench should lay down uniform guidelines. “The other side, the contractors are happy to comply. They have huge amounts. As far as we are concerned, we are answerable to the CAG. If we don’t agree, the arbitrator will not be happy. So we are in a quandary,” Venugopal said.

“Attorney General, with due respect to you, the way the PSUs are working is not appreciable. Simply because the arbitrator cannot defend themselves in these proceedings, you cannot attribute bias. At the point of appointment, you need to say that you do not agree with the fees.., the bench said. The bench was irked over the submission on the probability of bias and said an impression has been created by the PSU that arbitrators, if not paid the demanded fees, might be biased.

The bench said if there was any objection to the fees then it should be expressed at the time of the appointment itself. “We wrote to each arbitrator. They accepted the 4th schedule (provisions governing the fees of arbitrators). But later they changed their minds,” Venugopal said.

“It goes to Rs 85 lakh and more for each arbitration. Having accepted the 4th schedule, and asked us to deposit Rs 25 lakh, then they suddenly say Rs 1.5 lakh per sitting would be charged. Then they demand a separate reading fees, conference fees. We only seek uniformity. The court will have to bring in uniformity,” he said. The PSUs are answerable to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) for the money spent on arbitration and the private parties do not face these kinds of hurdles, he added.

The bench said that it would hear all the pleas together related to the issue of charging of fees by the arbitrators under relevant provisions of the arbitration rules under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act. The bench then issued notice on the plea and fixed it for hearing on March 23 along with other similar issues on the fees of arbitrators in relation to the statutory scheme.
