Praggnanandhaa beats Carlsen but remains third in Superbet chess

India’s R. Praggnanandhaa scored yet another victory over world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway to keep himself afloat even as Wei Yi of China stretched his lead to a massive 2.5 points in the Superbet rapid and blitz chess tournament, a part of the Grand Chess Tour. With nine rounds still to come in the blitz event, Wei Yi has amassed 20.5 points with seven wins on the first day of blitz. Ending the day with 7.5 out of a possible nine, Yi, seems like a man possessed and unless a hurricane hits him, is poised to win the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour.

Carlsen, on 18, is a distant second at this point and the main reason behind that is Praggnanandhaa, who has been beating the world number one often these days in the faster version of the game. Praggnanandhaa, however is far behind the leaders with 14.5 points which makes it literally a two-horse race for the title.

In fourth spot is Arjun Erigaisi on 14 points while Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland is right behind him on 13. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan stands sixth on 12.5, a full point clear of Vincent Keymer of Germany and the eighth spot is now taken by early leader Kirill Shevchenko of Romania with 11 points. Anish Giri of Holland improved a little to be ninth on 10.5 while the blitz remained a cause for worry for world championship challenger D. Gukesh who is languishing at the last spot with 9.5 points in the USD 1,75,000 prize money tournament.

Carlsen notably mentioned that his nervous system had collapsed following his second-round loss against Praggnanandhaa. The world number one ended with six points out of nine, which is by all standards a decent result but following his loss to the Indian he blundered again and went down to Abdusattorov from a winning position. Wei Yi started the day with a loss against Gukesh but recovered in quick time to only concede a draw to Carlsen while winning the rest of the seven games.

For Gukesh, it was a tough day despite a great start against the tournament leader as the Indian could only score 2.5 points in all. With victories over Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh, Arjun ensured he remained in contention for a podium finish.

Losing to Wei Yi and Carlsen, Arjun scored five wins and two draws in his other games and will be optimistic on the final day of the event. Final results rapid: 1. Wei Yi 20.5; 2. KKR’s Ramandeep fined 20% match fees for breaching IPL code of conduct

Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders medium pacer Ramandeep Singh has been fined 20 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during their match against Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens here.

The 27-year-old committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.

For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.

KKR on Saturday notched up an 18-run win over Mumbai Indians in a rain-curtailed match to become the first team to seal a playoffs berth this season.

Ramandeep scored 17 off 8 balls in the match.

CSK vs RR IPL 2024 preview: Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals out to spoil Chennai Super Kings’ playoff hopes

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will look to stay alive in the playoff race of IPL 2024 when they take on Rajasthan Royals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 12).

CSK are fourth on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table with 12 points from 12 matches. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side have won six games and lost the same number of matches before heading into the match against RR. A victory against RR is important for the defending champions, as a loss will give an outside chance for the likes of Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to make a late dash for a playoff spot.

Both DC and LSG also have garnered 12 points from 12 games but the two sides suffer inferior net run rate compared to CSK. While DC have a net run rate of -0.316 which places the team at fifth spot. LSG are a spot behind DC and have a net run rate of -0.769.

CSK will have to win its remaining two games to ensure a safe passage into the playoff. CSK however head into the match against RR on the back of a 35-run loss at the hands of Gujarat Titans, who are already out of contention of a play-off berth.

Batting first GT’s opening duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan hit hundreds as the team posted 231/3. CSK’s Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali hit half-centuries in reply as the five-time champions could only manage 196/8 in 20 overs. GT pacer Mohit Sharma (3/31) and spinner Rashid Khan (2/38) did not allow CSK batters to score freely all through the match.

In the opposing camp RR will be itching for a victory over CSK as it will help them take a big stride forward to qualify for the play-offs. The Sanju Samson-led side are second on the IPL points table with 16 points from 11 games.

Despite being one of the in-form teams this year, RR will head into Sunday’s fixture after tasting defeat against DC.

DC scored 221/8 after its openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel hit half-centuries. Samson was the lone warrior in RR’s chase as he hit a blistering 86 off 46 balls before getting dismissed under controversial circumstances. RR fell short by 20 runs and kept themselves waiting to qualify for a playoff berth.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)

With 541 runs Ruturaj Gaikwad is the team’s leading run-scorer this year. The CSK skipper has already hit one hundred and four fifties. The onus will be on Gaikwad to give his team a fast start and release the pressure from an under-performing middle order.

Sanju Samson (RR)

RR captain Sanju Samson has enjoyed a phenomenal run in IPL 2024. The wicketkeeper batsman has piled 471 runs and hit five fifties. Samson’s brilliant show with the bat ensured his selection for the Indian squad for next month’s T20 World Cup.  With Buttler’s form taking a hit, Samson will have to fire from the middle order.

James Anderson to retire after Lord’s Test against West Indies

London: Legendary pacer James Anderson on Saturday announced that the first Test against the West Indies this summer will be his final appearance for England, bringing down the curtains on an illustrious career spanning over 20 years.

Regarded as one of the greatest bowlers of all times, the 41-year-old is England’s leading wicket-takers and is one of only three bowlers to take over 700 Test scalps.

“Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test,” Anderson wrote on his Instagram.

“It’s been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid. I’m going to miss walking out for England so much.

“But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to, because there is no greater feeling,” he added.

Anderson’s announcement comes after England red-ball coach Brendon McCullum conveyed to the seamer that they are looking at the future, with an eye on the Ashes 2025-26 in Australia.

Anderson made his Test debut back in 2003 and has since claimed a remarkable 700 wickets in a record 187 Test matches. His 700th wicket against India in Dharamsala in March.

He currently ranks third on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, trailing behind spinners Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka and Australia’s Shane Warne.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Jimmy’, Anderson holds the record for playing the most Test matches by any England cricketer.

He ranks second on the all-time list of Test appearances, with only India’s legendary Sachin Tendulkar (200) ahead of him.

He was also part of a record-breaking bowling partnership for England alongside Stuart Broad, who retired last year.

However, whether Anderson will continue playing for his county side Lancashire remains unclear.

“I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world.” He has also picked up 269 ODI wickets from 194 outings and 18 scalps from 19 T20Is. He was part of the T20 World Cup winning English team.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, it’s always meant a lot, even if my face often doesn’t show it. See you at the Test, Go well Jimmy x,” Anderson wrote.

England are set to play a three-Test series against the West Indies, starting with the opener at Lord’s on July 10.

Axar Patel to lead DC against RCB following Rishabh Pant’s one-match ban

Bengaluru: Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting said on Saturday that Axar Patel will lead the side against Royal Challengers Bengaluru after the suspension of Rishabh Pant, whose absence the Australian termed a “loss”. The Capitals’ regular skipper Pant was on Saturday handed a one-match suspension for maintaining a slow over-rate for the third time in this IPL.

Pant was also fined Rs 30 lakh for the Code of Conduct breach that took place during DC’s 20-run win against Rajasthan Royals on May 7 in New Delhi. “Axar Patel will be our captain for tomorrow. He’s obviously been vice-captain for the last couple of seasons. “He is a very experienced IPL and international player, understands the game really well. A 21-year-old man has been arrested for criminal trespass after he breached the tight security cordon to enter the field to meet cricketer MS Dhoni during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred during the match between the Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans at the stadium in the Motera area of the city on Friday night, an official said. Jaykumar Jani, a native of Rabarika village in Bhavnagar district, has been arrested under section 447 (criminal trespass) of the IPC, Assistant Commissioner of Police DV Rana said.

Jani informed the police that he was Dhoni’s fan and wanted to meet him, he said. He jumped the barricades and ran towards the cricketer who was batting, the official said.

In a video of the incident that surfaced on social media, Jani is seen bowing at Dhoni’s feet near the pitch and hugging him before security personnel take him away. “Jani and his brother Parth travelled from Bhavnagar to watch the match. During a DRS (decision review system) break, Jani first jumped the metal barricades near the black screen and ran towards the pitch. He was quickly apprehended and taken to Chandkheda police station,” Rana said.

He was formally arrested on Saturday after a first information report (FIR) was registered against him, the official said. This is the second such incident at Narendra Modi stadium in six months.

In November 2023, Wayne Johnson, an Australian national of Chinese-Filipino origin, breached the security cordon to enter the field to hug Virat Kohli during the World Cup final between India and Australia.

Kylian Mbappe will play in Paris Olympics, hopes French President Emmanuel Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday he hoped football star Kylian Mbappe would play in this year’s Paris Olympic Games.

The France striker confirmed late on Friday that he would leave Paris St Germain and he has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid.
