What went into setting up the perfect field for Virat Kohli’s over

Summary

Described as a “wrong-footed in-swinging menace” by coach Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli threw down his first full overs in an ODI since 2017. He also picked up a wicket — his first in an ODI since January 2014, and just his fifth in 290 games in the format.

Virat Kohli’s rare wicket and three-over bowling spell added a festival atmosphere to India’s 160-run win over the Netherlands on Sunday in the last game before the Cricket World Cup semifinal stage.

Described as a “wrong-footed in-swinging menace” by coach Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli threw down his first full overs in an ODI since 2017. He also picked up a wicket — his first in an ODI since January 2014, and just his fifth in 290 games in the format.

Talking to BCCI.TV India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey explained how they had set up the field for Kohli’s over in the last match. “It was a nice setup. It was lovely to see Virat’s wicket. I could see him adjusting the fine leg a little bit, looking at KL (Rahul) saying where he was going to bowl. It was a lovely setup. I had a chat with Rohit about how could we use Virat. With the new ball, he swings the ball and gives us that little bit in the powerplay”.

With chants from the capacity crowd at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium urging Kohli to bowl, the former India skipper obliged.

“The bigger challenge with Virat was the middle phase, which he has done in this game. he ticked that box as well. Now we are going to push him for the death, let’s see when that happens, but I am sure he does have that really nipping, sharp yorkers for the right-handed batters. I think we will see a little bit of that as well,” said Mhambrey.

He had Dutch captain Scott Edwards caught behind down leg side for 17 in the 25th over and finished with figures of 1-13 from three overs. Things went more according to routine in the first innings when he scored 51 in India’s total of 410 for four. He has scored 71 half-centuries and 49 centuries in the 50-over format.

The 35-year-old Kohli moved atop the scoring standings at the tournament with 594 in nine matches, three more than South Africa’s Quinton de Kock. Unbeaten India used nine bowlers in dismissing last-place Netherlands for 250 in its final hitout before Wednesday’s semifinal against 2019 runner-up New Zealand in Mumbai.

Virat Kohli’s rare wicket and three-over bowling spell added a festival atmosphere to India’s 160-run win over the Netherlands on Sunday in the last game before the Cricket World Cup semifinal stage.

Described as a “wrong-footed in-swinging menace” by coach Rahul Dravid, Kohli came on to bowl military medium with his inimitable action – a throwback to New Zealand all-rounder slow medium Chris Harris’ bowling in the 1990s.

With chants from the capacity crowd at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium urging Kohli to bowl, the former India skipper obliged and threw down his first full overs in an ODI since 2017. Topping that, he picked up a wicket — his first in an ODI since January 2014, and just his fifth in 290 games in the format.

R Ashwin had also tested positive for Covid-19 before leaving India, causing his arrival to be delayed. Meet the heroes of India U-19 World Cup 2022 winning team

India won a record-extending fifth U-19 World Cup title on Saturday, beating England by four wickets in the final of an extraordinary campaign. As the colts created history in the Caribbean, here is a look at five outstanding performers from the young side. (Image: BCCI)
Yash Dhull: The Delhi-lad has followed the footsteps of his state senior Virat Kohli by captaining his side to a U-19 title win. It was not all smooth sailing as he had to skip most of the preliminary matches due to COVID-19. However, he returned to the side in the quarterfinals and scored a critical 20 not out ensuring India beat the defending champions. However, it was in the semifinals against the Australians that Dhull brought out his best. Coming to bat in a tough situation, Dhull scored a match-winning century. Even in the finals, it was his composure that really made the difference after India lost the toss. (Image: Instagram)
Shaikh Rasheed: The Andhra lad is not just the vice-captain of the side, but also the anchorman of the batting lineup. He scored 201 runs at an average of over 50 in the series and provided stability to the side. His partnership with his captain in the semifinals was evidence of his talent and temperament.
Raj Bawa: The Himachal all-rounder comes from a family of Olympians and sportsmen. Bawa is a pure all-rounder similar to the likes of Pandya and Hooda. The pacer was the player of the final thanks to his fifer that broke the backbone of the English batting lineup, He is also handy with the bat and scored over 200 runs with an average of over 60 that included a brilliant century. (Image: Instagram)
Dinesh Bana: The Haryanvi wicketkeeper is not just a livewire behind the stumps but also a handy hard-hitter with the bat. His quick-fire finishes, including the sixes in the last two balls of the tournament, have already led to comparisons with MS Dhoni. (Image: Instagram)
Rajvardhan Hangargekar: There is something special about seeing a young pacer dominate the batter with his pace and aggression. The young Maharashtra quickie is definitely something to watch out for in the future. He has the build and aggression of a pacer and could be a value bet in the long run. That he is no rookie with the bat is an added advantage. (Image: Instagram)

‘Virat Kohli should forgive and move forward’: Shoaib Akhtar claims Indian cricketer was ‘forced’ to leave captaincy

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has claimed there are certain lobbies in Indian cricket which forced Virat Kohli to step down as team India captain from all formats. “He should move forward from this and not keep any bitterness against anyone. Just forgive everybody and keep moving,” he added.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has claimed there are certain lobbies in Indian cricket which forced Virat Kohli to step down as team India captain from all formats in a span of few months, News18 reported.

“There are lobbies against him and there are people against him and that is the reason why he stepped down,” said Akhtar.

Last year, Kohli had stepped down as the T20I captain and then he was removed as the ODI leader as the selectors wanted one skipper for the white-ball format.

Kohli last week stepped down as India’s Test captain after leading the side for seven years. In a statement announcing his resignation, Kohli said, “I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and I can’t do that, it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and cannot be dishonest to my team.”

Akhtar who is currently participating in the Legends League Cricket, while talking to ANI said: “This is not the best of times for him but he needs to prove what he is made of. Is he made of steel or iron? He is a great guy and a cricketer. Do not try too many things, just go out there and play cricket. He is a great batsman and has achieved more than anyone else in the world. He just needs to go out there and play with his natural flow.”

“He plays a lot with his bottom hand and I think when the form is out, bottom hand players usually are the first ones to get in trouble. I think he’s gonna come out of this. He should move forward from this and not keep any bitterness against anyone. Just forgive everybody and keep moving,” he added.

Talking about India’s next Test captain, the pacer said: “I know BCCI will make a smart decision regarding this.”

Rohit Sharma injured for South Africa Test series, Virat Kohli likely to miss ODIs; Mohammed Azharuddin smells ‘rift’

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The development has given a rise to the speculation of a cold war brewing between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the wake of the ODI captaincy change.

Virat Kohli has reportedly opted out of India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa which is scheduled to be held in January next year.

According to reports, Virat is taking time off to celebrate his daughter Vamika’s first birthday.

This comes a day after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced that Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the three-match Test series in South Africa due to a left hamstring injury sustained during a training session in Mumbai.

However, Sharma is expected to recover for the ODIs.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma missing the ODI and Test series against South Africa respectively, has given a rise to the speculation of a cold war brewing between the two in the wake of ODI captaincy change. Rohit, who was already appointed T20 International captain, replaced Kohli as ODI captain last week.

Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has questioned the timing of Rohit Sharma’s injury ahead of the Test series and Virat Kohli’s break from ODI matches.

“Virat Kohli has informed that he’s not available for the ODI series & Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the upcoming test. There is no harm in takin a break but d timing has to be better. This just substantiates speculation abt d rift. Neither wil be giving up d other form of cricket,” he tweeted.

The Test series against South Africa gets underway from December 26, followed by a 3-match ODI series. The first One-Day International is scheduled to be held in Paarl on January 19. The second match will be played at the same venue on January 21 after which the teams will move to Cape Town to play the final game of the tour on January 23.

India vs New Zealand ICC T20 World Cup 2021 preview: Possible playing XI, betting odds, head-to-head and where to watch

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

India and New Zealand are favourites to reach the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 from group 2. Pakistan have already qualified after winning 3 games on the trot in the Super 12 stage.

Team India will take on New Zealand in what will be an epic clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 12 stage at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE on October 31. Captain Virat Kohli will look to get his team back in the tournament after a disappointing defeat against Pakistan, while New Zealand will want to go one up against India to ensure they qualify for the semi-final game.

The group 2 game will be the most defining test of Kohli’s captaincy career and he will expect his men to go all out against the Kiwis. Both teams have faced defeats at the hands of Pakistan, who have made it to the semi-final stage after winning all three games in the Super 12 stage of the tournament so far.

Both teams are among favourites to reach the semi-final stage from group 2 and now the onus is on India and New Zealand to battle for the second semi-final spot.

The game against Kane Williamson’s side will not be an easy task for Kohli and Team India, as they would also want to register a win in their second outing in the Super 12 stage. Tim Southee and Trent Boult have been a nemesis in big games for India.

Where to watch LIVE:
The match will be played at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE. The toss will take place at 7 pm (IST), while the match will begin at 7.30 pm (IST). The India vs New Zealand game will be telecast LIVE on Star Sports Network.

Live streaming of the match is available on Disney+ Hotstar.

You can catch the LIVE blog of the game on CNBCTV18.com.

India will have a slight advantage as the batting line-up of New Zealand has so far failed to fire, with skipper Williamson not at his best and Martin Guptill suffering a foot injury. It’s effective without being flamboyant, although, Devon Conway is a flashy batter. And herein lies India’s chance but for that, their bowlers need to implement the game plans perfectly, something they couldn’t against Pakistan.

Even more important will be execution from two players on whom the team management has heavily invested — a half-fit Hardik Pandya and an out-of-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been the weak-links of this Indian team.

Hardik, who has not been the cricketer everyone feared since his back injury, is playing to save his career. Bhuvneshwar could well be playing his last international tournament. His pace has dropped remarkably in the past two seasons and somewhere he has not been a patch of what his younger competitor Deepak Chahar has been in recent years.

India’s batting too has not been up to the mark, and Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul would want to showcase their skills against the Kiwis. Kohli will only hope to keep his form alive from the previous game against Pakistan, where he was the only one to score a half century for Team India.

India could bring in Shardul Thakur into the mix against New Zealand to boost their all-round performance.

For New Zealand, they will need to adjust quickly to the pace of the Dubai wicket if they want to defeat India when the teams meet in their crucial Twenty20 World Cup clash.

Key bowler Tim Southee said that there are a lot of learnings to be taken from their game against Pakistan. “We weren’t far off against a quality Pakistan side, but we’ve got to park that. We’ve got to look forward. It’s such a short tournament and there’s no easy games,” he said.

The New Zealanders will be playing at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for the first time during the competition, while India lost at the same ground in their opener, potentially giving Kohli’s side an advantage.

Only the top two nations in each of the two groups in the Super 12 phase of the competition will advance to the last four.

India possible playing XI: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah

India vs Pakistan ICC T20 World Cup preview: Possible playing XI, betting odds and where to watch live

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

India have an all-win record against Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007. All the matches have been won under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but Virat Kohli will be determined to ensure that Team India emerge victorious against Babar Azam’s side in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 Group stage match.

India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super 12 Group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (October 24). This will be the most sought-after game of the tournament as megastars of the current generation are primed to show their might against a bunch of enigmatic cricketers.

The sensitive nature of cross-border relationship between the neighbours has led to minimal sporting engagements and cricket has always become the vehicle of one upmanship for the fans on both sides.

In terms of numbers, India have an all-win record against their arch-rivals in the T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007. Incidentally, all the matches were won under the one and only Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who will be there on skipper Virat Kohli’s ears with his ‘diamond crusted info-nuggets’, which might lead to Babar Azam tearing a hair or two in exasperation. Yet, this is a match that everyone awaits in the global event — the fans because of its novelty factor, the ICC and the broadcasters for filling up the coffers. Everyone is invested be it emotionally, like the fans, or materially, like the other stakeholders.

Be it Sunil Gavaskar or Sourav Ganguly, everyone who understands the game would tell you that this is the one format where the margins are thinnest and qualitative difference matters the least, as any one performer can win it for his side on a given day. It could be Kohli, who would love to get over his mediocre run of form in a match that always carries a posterity value or Shaheen Shah Afridi could tail one into KL Rahul’s pads first up to set it up for Pakistan.

It could be Mohammed Rizwan, who might just launch into Mohammed Shami or it could be Suryakumar Yadav, who could play a reverse flick off Hasan Ali. “In games likes these, some unnecessary stuff happens on the professional point from outside that,” Kohli said, playing down the hype as he has done in earlier games also. “It’s fine as long as it stays outside our controlled environment, we just focus on what we need to do as cricketers and hence it’s no different from other games of cricket that we play.

“Yes, atmosphere inside the stadium is different but our mindset is no different and our preparations are no different,” he added. His counterpart Babar also echoed same sentiments.

“To be honest, we don’t want to focus on the past. We are looking forward to this World Cup. We will focus on our strength, ability and apply that on the day,” said the Pakistan captain. The players may say that it’s just “another game of cricket” but even they know that in this day and age of retro videos and offensive memes, a not-so-great performance stays forever.

No one knows it better than current chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma, who is carrying the cross of a last ball six off Javed Miandad for the past 35 years. But cricket has changed since those heady days of Sharjah and India, with its robust structure and talent factory, has produced world-class performers by the dozens.

The Virat Kohlis, the Rohit Sharmas and the Jasprit Bumrahs don’t carry any baggage despite the blip in the 2017 Champions Trophy final. On Sunday, the Pakistanis will have a lot more to prove than their Indian counterparts.

For the likes of Shaheen, Rizwan, Harris Rauf and their uber cool captain Babar, it will not just be about breaking a World Cup jinx against a world-class side. It is also about how global cricket perceives Pakistan which saw two of the cricketing elites England and New Zealand close ranks and refuse to tour the country.

Over the years, Pakistan cricket have faced an existential crisis and a good game against India will certainly give them some breathing space. But it will be easier said than done against an Indian side whose players are coming into the tournament with a heavy dose of IPL games in the UAE, which is Pakistan’s adopted home.

For India, their strength is a crack top-five that comprises Rohit, Rahul, Kohli, Suryakumar and Rishabh Pant. Here is a line-up that can send a chill down the spine of Afridi, Rauf, Hasan, Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan, who are going to form the core of their bowling attack. India’s problem is going to be a long tail and the absence of a sixth bowler as Hardik Pandya is played purely as a batter.

If one believes in the MSD template of T20 cricket, this format is all about handling the pressure and if 20 is required off 10 balls, Pandya is still a better bet than a greenhorn like Ishan Kishan, who is supposedly in better form. “We have considered a couple of other options to chip in for a over or two. So we are not bothered at all. What he brings in at that spot is something that one can’t create overnight,” said Kohli, backing Hardik’s inclusion.

The bowling department will depend on which side of the track they are playing as Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shami and Varun Chakravarthy pick themselves. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s experience holds him in good stead and he has better variations than Shardul Thakur, who despite a knack of getting wickets, can go for runs.

If there’s an extra spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, with his great game awareness, could be more effective than Rahul Chahar, but the Indian team management can throw in a surprise or two. For Pakistan, their two main players will be skipper Babar, an all-format superstar and someone who is destined to be one of the modern day greats. He will require support from Shaheen with the new ball as Hasan and Rauf could go for runs against India.

Left-arm spinner Imad has had a great record in UAE for Pakistan and how he varies his pace in the power play and middle-overs against the likes of Pant and Surya will also define how they fare. Similarly, the two old men in Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Hafeez will be keen to settle scores with India. On paper, it looks unlikely but T20 is a different beast.

Where to watch LIVE: The game will be played at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE. The toss will take place at 7 pm (IST), while the match will begin at 7.30 pm (IST). The India vs Pakistan match will be telecast LIVE on Star Sports Network. Live streaming of the match is available on Disney+ Hotstar.

Virat Kohli to step down as T20 captain after upcoming World Cup

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Indian cricket captin Virat Kohli has decided to lessen his workload and thus step down as the T20 captain after the upcoming World Cup. He has conveyed his decision to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and BCCI President Saurav Ganguly.

Team India captain Virat Kohli on Thursday announced that he will step down as T20 captain after the T20 World Cup which will be held in Dubai in October this year.

“Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats and captaining regularly for last five to six years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead Indian team in Test and ODI cricket,” Kohli said in a statement on his Twitter page. “I have given my everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 captain and will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward,” Kohli said in a statement.

He said the decision was taken after consulting head coach Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma, and the same has been conveyed to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and BCCI President Saurav Ganguly.

Kohli has played 90 T20 Internationals scoring 3159 runs with 28 fifties and captained India in 45 of those games winning 27 and losing 14. He has a winning percentage of 65.11.

Mantle set to go to Rohit Sharma

The development came after reports had surfaced last week that Virat Kohli may soon hand over the reins to fellow batsman Rohit Sharma. In his statement, Kohli mentioned Rohit as “an essential part of the leadership group”.

A split captaincy like the one expected from Kohli and Sharma is not new for Indian cricket. Dhoni first became the skipper at a time when Anil Kumble was still the captain of the test team. When Dhoni left the captaincy to Kohli, he still retained the captaincy of the test team himself as well.

Other national teams like England, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also have split captaincy for their teams for different formats.
