MS Dhoni muscle tear: Former Team India captain has overcome these 5 injuries

MS Dhoni batted at No. 9 for the very first time in an IPL match during the recent victory secured by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamshala. Reports that emerged later suggest that Dhoni is nursing a muscle tear on his leg, which is why he was avoiding spending too much time in the middle. Dhoni has been one of the fittest cricketers in the world, but has had to deal with his fair share of injuries as well. Here’s a look at the five injuries sustained by the legendary cricketer. In 2014, Dhoni suffered a hairline fracture at the base of his right thumb, presenting an interesting dilemma in front of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Given that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was nearing at that point, Dhoni was advised rest for that ODI series in November, which was headlined by the remarkable 264* that Rohit Sharma scored in Kolkata. Dhoni’s injury lengthened a bit, with him sitting out of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide too. (Image Source: Reuters)
When Pakistan came calling for a tour in 2007, Anil Kumble was leading the Indian team. Dhoni had suffered a knee injury back then, and Kumble had suggested that the wicket-keeper could be given a break. However, Sachin Tendulkar ended up picking a knock at around the same time, forcing Indian team to get Gautam Gambhir in as a replacement, and that meant that Dhoni couldn’t sit out of the playing XI in a bid to not further weaken the batting order. At 41, MS Dhoni led CSK to their fifth IPL title last year. However, though that journey was exceptional for the franchise, it didn’t come without challenges for their skipper. Dhoni battled a knee injury throughout the tournament, batting low down the order to avoid running too much between the wickets. Dhoni scored 104 runs last season, hitting three fours and 10 sixes to bat at a strike rate of 182.46. However, he faced only 57 deliveries across 16 innings, indicating his reluctance on this front owing to fitness concerns. (Image Source: iplt20.com)
During India’s tour of New Zealand before the ODI World Cup of 2019, Dhoni underwent scans for a sore hamstring and was subsequently sidelined from the third match of that series against the Kiwis. Dinesh Karthik replaced Dhoni in the playing XI for that match, but Dhoni recovered immediately and was fresh for the rest of the season, which included a home ODI contest against Australia.
