A court in Spain launched a business corruption probe into the private dealings of Sanchez’s wife Begona Gomez.

Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is poised to end days of suspense on Monday when he will clear the air on whether he plans to stay on or quit the premiership.

His supporters in the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) have urged Sanchez to continue serving the post. Last week, he said he was stepping back for a few days to decide his future and would make an official announcement today, reports said.

Sanchez spent the weekend in a period of ‘reflection, which started last Wednesday when the 52-year-old asked, “Is it all worth it?”

This came as a court in Spain launched a business corruption probe into the private dealings of Sanchez’s wife Begona Gomez.

Sanchez has denied all the allegations against his wife and called it a part of a sustained campaign of mud-slinging by his political rivals in the country.

According to reports, there are all possibilities; that Sanchez might resign as Spain’s prime minister or carry on the post. He can also submit to a parliamentary vote of confidence and resign only if he loses the vote.

Another option available for him is a snap election on July 21, which is the earliest day allowed by the constitution.

Meanwhile, thousands of Sanchez supporters held rallies in Madrid over the weekend and urged him to continue serving the country.

Sanchez, one of the EU’s most senior Socialist leaders, first became the prime minister of Spain in 2018 and secured a second consecutive term for the Socialists last year as leader of a minority coalition government.

However, opposition parties have condemned Sanchez’s move. “Spain does not have a problem, the ones who have a judicial problem are Sanchez, his government, his party and his circle. Let them solve it,” Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative People’s Party, said at a meeting in the eastern city of Tarragona on Saturday.
