2024 Pulitzer Prizes for Journalism: Here is the full list of winners

In a statement released last week, the Pulitzer Board lauded student journalists for their coverage of campus protests against the Gaza conflict, recognising their courage in confronting significant personal and academic challenges.

The Columbia University hosted the 108th Pulitzer Prizes ceremony, celebrating excellence in American journalism, literature, drama, and music on May 7. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in their respective fields within the United States, this year’s awards unfolded amidst exceptional circumstances.

In a statement released last week, the Pulitzer Board lauded student journalists for their coverage of campus protests against the Gaza conflict, recognising their courage in confronting significant personal and academic challenges.

Last year, a total of twenty-three prizes were bestowed, with most recipients receiving cash awards of $15,000, and the Public Service Prize winner receiving a prestigious gold medal.

Among this year’s recipients, The New York Times clinched one of its three Pulitzer Prizes for its comprehensive coverage of the Gaza conflict.

Here is the complete list of winners for the prizes in Journalism –

Public Service – ProPublica, represented by Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Alex Mierjeski, and Kirsten Berg, earned this accolade for their groundbreaking investigative journalism.

Breaking News Reporting – Lookout Santa Cruz, California’s dedicated team clinched this award for their agile and comprehensive reporting during a holiday weekend of catastrophic flooding and mudslides.

Investigative Reporting – Hannah Dreier from The New York Times received recognition for her extensive investigative series, which exposed the widespread prevalence of child labor among migrants across the United States.

Explanatory Reporting: Sarah Stillman from The New Yorker was honored for her compelling examination of the legal system’s reliance on the felony murder charge and its disproportionate impact, particularly on communities of color.

Local Reporting – Sarah Conway of City Bureau and Trina Reynolds-Tyler of the Invisible Institute were awarded for their collaborative investigative series focused on the alarming rates of missing Black girls and women in Chicago.

National Reporting – The Staff of Reuters received recognition for their extensive series of accountability stories investigating Elon Musk’s automotive and aerospace ventures.

International Reporting – The Staff of The New York Times was awarded for their comprehensive coverage of Hamas’ deadly attack in southern Israel on October 7, Israel’s intelligence lapses, and the subsequent forceful response by the Israeli military in Gaza.

Feature Writing – Katie Engelhart, a contributing writer for The New York Times, received the award for her empathetic portrayal of a family’s legal and emotional challenges during a matriarch’s progressive dementia.

Commentary – Vladimir Kara-Murza, a contributor to The Washington Post, was recognized for his passionate columns, written from his prison cell at great personal risk. His writings warned of the consequences of dissent in Vladimir Putin’s Russia and advocated for a democratic future for the country.

Criticism – Justin Chang, from the Los Angeles Times, was honored for his captivating and diverse film critiques, which offer insightful reflections on the modern movie-watching journey.

Editorial Writing – David E. Hoffman of The Washington Post received recognition for his compelling series delving into new technologies and the strategies employed by authoritarian regimes to stifle dissent in the digital era.

Illustrated Reporting and Commentary – Medar de la Cruz, a contributor to The New Yorker, was awarded for his visually compelling narrative set within Rikers Island prison.

Breaking News Photography – The Photography Staff of Reuters was awarded this for their photographs documenting the October 7th attack in Israel by Hamas.

Feature Photography – The Photography Staff of Associated Press was awarded this for pictures chronicling masses of migrants and their journey north from Colombia to the border of the US.

Audio Reporting – The Staffs of the Invisible Institute, Chicago, and USG Audio, California, was awarded this for a powerful series that revisits a Chicago hate crime from the 1990s.
